UFC 89 free on Spike TV ... not a PPV

ufc 89
UFC 89: "Leben vs. Bisping" at The NIA in Birmingham, England, on October 18 will be televised for free on Spike TV, according to Dave Meltzer at WrestlingObserver.com.

The event so far features two great match ups, including a middleweight slugfest between Michael Bisping and Chris Leben, as well as a tentative welterweight war that pits Thiago Alves against Diego Sanchez.

Meltzer indicates that the UFC will likely stage a major pay-per-view (PPV) event one week later on Saturday, October 25. It has not been announced at this time nor is a location or venue known, but we will assume that it will be dubbed UFC 90.

Rejoice.

That is great. I couldn’t find it in my heart to buy a card named Bisping vs. Leben. Now I will get to see the fights on tv insead of the net.

by naturalshadow on Jul 3, 2008 3:28 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah same here I don’t know if it would be worth the money if that was the headliner. Now we don’t have to worry!

by LIFT on Jul 3, 2008 10:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

it will be a freebie because dana knows he owes it to the fans after the last one at the O2 arena in england. or maybe because he know has to compete w more free cards from othe organizations…either way, good for all of us.

by blah on Jul 3, 2008 3:55 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Honestly I think we might start to see a few more free shows…now that there are a couple other promotions that are staging DECENT cards…ex affliction. I really dont see the UFC forcing fans to pay for cards that Dana puts on that are average when we will have an opportunity to see another promotions card. BUT! Be prepared for the UFC to stage two events in the months that we get a free card because every time we dont spend the 50 bucks with the UFC we have an opportunity to spend it with another promotion. So Im happy because all this compition to the UFC equals a lot more benefits from them.

THis is wonderful news! A free card featuring: Diego/Alves and Leben/Bisping….

In other UFC news, the UFC/Spike tv are working together to find a way to counter EliteXC’s july 26th CBS televised event. THey will have to do bvetter than some old chuck liddell fights, and I think they are aware of that! Should be interesting to see what they can come up with!

by john on Jul 3, 2008 9:15 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Good move making this one free on Spike. I know a few people that would refuse to pay for this one. But of course, most of you know me, I would not miss this for just about anything.

If the UFC wants to start countering every move made by thier compeition, they need to start doing it on more than 3 weeks notice. Once the compeititor’s event is announced, start planning.

This is a sign that Dana is starting to worry about all the other MMA options out there.

by ViolentMike on Jul 3, 2008 10:06 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, the day competing events are announced Dana should get to work trying to counter them, if thats what he really feels like he needs to do.

Thank God for competition….let the organizations fight it out over supremacy, while us fans can sit back as the winners. Because of EliteXC on CBS and Affliction’s monster cards, the UFC has been force3d to give us more Free events, and better quality events.

I am thankful for the competition, and I hope that they can withstand the UFC efforts to squash them…the more competition, the better the UFC has to treat its Fans… We are very fortunate!

I hear Affliction’s second show will be around November 1st. Affliction said the 2nd show will feature some winners from the Banned event, as well as new stars. Affliction is said to be in talks with a lot of top fighters, trying to sign them on for the next show….I cant wait to see who else they can get on board, its going to be really good!

by john on Jul 3, 2008 10:34 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

10/11 would also make a good date for an Affliction event. That give people 2 weeks to set aside money for the UFC ppv.

I completely agree with you guys that competition is much needed in the world of MMA. Doesn’t matter what companies are involved because it’s a good time to be a fan.

i think the next event should be ufc 90 anderson silva vs okami even if he win to irvin he needs to defend his MW title dana needs to put a title fight and the MW is the only division that could happen in october 25 i think all the fans knows why i dont need to say it

by jow32 on Jul 3, 2008 1:28 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

How much longer will they have nogeria sit on the sidelines, that situation is tricky.

by alex on Jul 3, 2008 1:32 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Until after the TUF 8 Finale. Nog’s coaching and will then defend the HW Title against Mir.

SICK!
This is very good news

by Budgell on Jul 3, 2008 2:16 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Wonderful news! Hope its true. Only bad thing about that is we won’t get as much of the prelims due to commercials, but a good trade off for a free show imo. I’m still giddy about Diego Vs. Thiago. Don’t tell Dana, but I would have paid double for it.

Great you will all get to see Bisping lay a beat down!

by Tony on Jul 3, 2008 4:47 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Great, we all get to see Bisping exposed for the pu$$y he is…..KTFO!!!!!!!!!!!

by Brian on Jul 3, 2008 5:58 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah 16-1 as a pro fighter what a pu$$y.

I know the immidate answer would be, he hasn’t fought anyone and lost to Hamill blaa blaa blaaa. But to have had that many fights and never been stopped is impressive in professional mma.

He has looked awsome at 185 only an idiot would disagree.

Far from a pu$$y.

by Nick J on Jul 3, 2008 6:21 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I like Bisping at 185 so far also but I’m looking forward to his intense slug fest with Leben.

Lol, braveheart I thought you were from the other side of the pond. Cuz I was almost positive “ya’ll” was strictly a southern U.S. thing.

Do you know what the score is with 86 on the tv? Setanta has bought the rights but as far as i can see its only on at 3am??

Do you know if its repeated on either Bravo or Setanta on Sunday night? I can’t get on either website whilst at work for some reason.

Cheers mate

by Nick J on Jul 3, 2008 11:45 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think Setanta have brought the rights for all the events after the last TUF Finale. Its going to be like watching boxing where we will see the events live at whatever time they start stateside. Doesn’t show any repeats on UK.UFC.COM TV guide but check your SKY+ when you get home tonight.

Also means shelling out for Setanta but with the extra Premiership matches its still a good deal.

by UKmmaBOY on Jul 3, 2008 12:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Apologies. It will repeat on Wednesday 9 July at 7.05pm.

by UKmmaBOY on Jul 3, 2008 12:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Cheers mate, gotto bloody buy a sky + box it looks like and shell out for Setanta, sh*t happens.

by nick j on Jul 3, 2008 6:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This will be the strategy for foreign shows where there’s a local star who isn’t yet a star in the mainstream. Bisping can sell out an arena in his own right in the UK but isn’t a big enough PPV draw, so makes alot of sense.

by Andy on Jul 3, 2008 6:29 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

good deal!

by b.w on Jul 3, 2008 9:45 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

This will be a lot more interesting and
entertaining of a fight than his one with Rashad…

by RipTheSystem on Jul 3, 2008 9:55 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

GREAT! The Bisping vs Leben fight is gonna take place!!!

Wow. I don’t believe Leben will just roll over like the other one did after running his mouth for weeks.

I like em both – so it’s hard for me to cheer for one of them.
All i hope is that it won’t be a judges decision.

by MikeJJ on Jul 4, 2008 5:18 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

bisping will not slug with leben because leben has more knock out power…. bisping will box against leben and stay away… he may also try takin leben down and use his trademark ground ‘n’ pound

by ufc addict on Jul 8, 2008 9:43 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Well is better free than paying, but it is not a live event.
