El Guapo is the man!

I kinda lost some respect for Bas. Riddick Bowe approched Bas after an IFL event I think, and asked Bas to maybe train him that he already had the punching power. Bas said to a interviewer that asked him what Bowe wanted. Bas said he wasnt to interested in training a guy who can only punch, cause he would get taken down by a wrestler or submitted by a JJ guy. So now Bas is training and always defending Kimbo? I think Bowe would have had more cred than Kimbo.

by JV on Jul 2, 2008 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions

That sounds strang, I hope there is more to that story or maybe part of it was taken out of context.

by Haze on Jul 2, 2008 4:09 PM EDT up reply actions

HOw can anyone loose respect for Bas Rutten? U r nutts dude! Bas is the greatest figure in the history of mma!

I am still working on the “twister” and “splits” Violentmike knows exactly what I am talking about, and what fight I saw those moves attempted in!

by john on Jul 2, 2008 4:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Is that move legal? I dont see why not!

by john on Jul 2, 2008 4:14 PM EDT up reply actions

Haze I’ve been trying to find the interview, but the only one I can find is the one where Bowe says hes probably going to train with Bas. But ofcourse we know that didnt happen. So Bas turned down Bowe, but was ok with training Kimbo? It didnt make much sense to me either.

by JV on Jul 2, 2008 4:24 PM EDT up reply actions

Maybe Kimbo was more open to learning more aspects of the game and not just stand-uo? Either way I still think Bas is the man, but thanks for looking for the interview.

by Haze on Jul 2, 2008 4:35 PM EDT up reply actions

maybe its because bowe has a conditioning problem and does not comitt, he was hw champ and could not even bring himself to train, now he is older and more out of shape whats to say if he would train right now.

by roy on Jul 2, 2008 4:42 PM EDT up reply actions

John, you REALLY got me thinking now at the end of the day…. I do remember watching a fight and then the next day talking about The Twister, I am just trying to remember what fight it was…. I remember typing that this dude was going for submissions that I had never even heard of, such as the twister and the split.

It wasn’t Miguel Torres vs Chase Beebe, was it?

by ViolentMike on Jul 2, 2008 4:53 PM EDT up reply actions

How old is Riddick Bowe? How old is Kimbo?

That is the answer.

But not the the question that I am trying to remember, JOHN.

by ViolentMike on Jul 2, 2008 4:53 PM EDT up reply actions

JOHN, the Mayhem Monkey inside me just came out!!!! I knew it was in the WEC. It was the Jason Miller vs H. Miura. I do not remember how to spell that Japanese fighter’s first name, and I may have gotten the last name wrong too…

I KNEW it was WEC becuase I totally remember Frank Mir announcing it. Like Goldy would have known what those moves were!

by ViolentMike on Jul 2, 2008 4:58 PM EDT up reply actions

Thanks for racking my brain!

Now I’m happy that I put my head down, closed my eyes, and was able to remember something!!!!

by ViolentMike on Jul 2, 2008 4:59 PM EDT up reply actions

roy, Bowe in his career went 12 rounds. Kimbo bearly went 3 with Thompson. So what do you mean by conditioning? It was a while back when Bowe wanted to train. If I remember correctly, Bas said “I would rather train a wrestler or JJ guy to strike” “than a striker to do JJ or wrestle” So Bas passed on Bowe but picked up Kimbo?

by JV on Jul 2, 2008 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions

Jason Miller vs Hirihitsu Miura (spelling?)

by ViolentMike on Jul 2, 2008 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions

jv bowe had a conditioning problem, i am not saying kimbo is a better fighter but he is in the gym training hard according to bas not me. bowe was lazy he joined the military because he could not force himself to train and he quit a week later.he was a great fighter that could not stay in shape and would not train its well known.

by roy on Jul 2, 2008 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions

bINGO!! I knew that u would know! I knew it was Mayhem, I just couldnt remember the Japanese dudes name!

by john on Jul 2, 2008 5:29 PM EDT up reply actions

VM: Goldy would have been like: “Holy Cow, what he hell is he doing” or something stupid of that nature.

U know whats been racking my brain for days now? What did Goldi do before the UFC? For some reason I just cant remember and its bothering me…was it Hockey?

by john on Jul 2, 2008 5:37 PM EDT up reply actions

READ THIS:

Yahoo! Sports, another Spike TV special is being planned to counter EliteXC’s follow-up event on July 26. EliteXC’s May 31 event averaged 4.85 million viewers (peaking with 6.51 million), and Spike TV averaged just a third of that. But the counter-programming surely makes at least a small impact.

Atencio also downplayed criticism that the organization’s follow-up events won’t be nearly as stacked as “Banned.” He was confident plenty of talent will be on display and said future events, which could include overseas shows, will feature winners from “Banned” and new fighters.

“We have a lot of fighters,” he said. “We have a lot of fighters we’re talking to right now.” talking about Affliction!

by john on Jul 2, 2008 6:38 PM EDT up reply actions

He did the announcement for the Abu Dhabi Redbull Airshow too..

I was watching TV and saw him doing commentary, and thought it was something UFC related, then there’s airplanes going through an obstacle course.

“This airplane is a scary dude!”

“You’re not kidding Joe, he has an INSANE reach advantage.”

“And it’s alllllllllll over……”

by DirtyML on Jul 2, 2008 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions

VM, excellent recognition on the moves. The fellow Mayhem Monkey in me would have ruined your quiz had I been on at the time. It stills racks my brain to think that Miller only has two fights with Zuffa, one with UFC and one with WEC. Both were highly entertaining. He had to have something bigger offered but not wanted to sign an exclusive contract.

I really wanted to see him hit that banana split and really want to see that executed in a fight by anyone. (In Goldy’s defense, he is not the “expert” commentator and Rogan would have caught them as Mir did.)

by PJJ on Jul 2, 2008 9:00 PM EDT up reply actions

I saw this comment here and I had to say something.
The problem with many fans is that they just make shit up, or they hear something and just assume that it’s true without checking.

Example, somebody posted that Kimbo said on FC Radio that he could have easily won the first UFC’s and that he could beat those early champions. You should have read how many people started talking shit about Kimbo, nobody, I repeat, NOBODY even thought about checking this statement.
If they would have checked it they would have found out that Kimbo never said that, why? First of all because I know him and he respects all the fighters so he will never say that, but second, and this one is the best, he NEVER even did an interview for FC Radio.

Same as with that Riddick Bowe comment, send me a link from that interview, did you hear me saying that? No you didn’t because I never said it.

The thing that I am asking for me and I am sure that all the other athletes, commentators etc like this, when you hear something like this, just ask for a link to the interview or video clip where they refer too.

Riddick Bowe wanted me to train him; I told him that he was welcome any time. He said that it would be easy for him; I told him that he was wrong. He said that he thought they had bad boxing skills in MMA and I told him that nobody was going to box with him. Than he said it would be easy to defend a takedown, I told him it was not, that fighters would time him making a punch and use that against him.
I told him that in order to hit somebody you have to close the distance because otherwise you hit air. The moment that you close the distance your opponent will drop and shoot in, they WILL put you on your back 100% guaranteed.

He never showed up, but this is the only thing that happened, I NEVER said that I wouldn’t train somebody who could only punch, who the hell makes stuff up- like that? What on Earth am I doing than with Kimbo?

I don’t say that you made this comment up, but if you didn’t I know 100% that you didn’t check it, because if you did, you wouldn’t have wrote that down and let more people believe this made up story.

See how fast it goes? ONE comment travels fast, for some reason nobody checks it and suddenly I am an asshole.

That’s it. Oh, and one more thing. The Bas Rutten Exorcist is NOT a twister. I didn’t steal anything from anybody. If you know your submissions than you know it’s not even close to a twister. It is as close to a twister as a kimura is to a hammer lock.
"But you twist the head", yes, but that’s it, with a twister you also twist the back, with my move there is more focus on the neck.

Eddie Bravo is one of the best submission guys on the planet, I respect and like him a lot, to steal something from him is not my nature.

I never said I invented the Exorcist because I can not believe that I am the one who came up with it knowing that there is ground fighting for 1000’s of years, but I can tell you that I NEVER seen anybody do it and that nobody thought me it.
I was simply getting sick from not be able to finish somebody from the back with great RNC defense, this was my answer.

I made up more moves, yes that’s right, I can grapple, I actually won more fights by submission than by KO, but there is another thing that people don’t check. They say that I am a striker, but I think I am even better on the ground, my students rather stand with me than go to the ground.
What happened is that I lost to Ken Shamrock in 1995, based on that they all think I have no submission skills. If people would check they would find out that I started training ONLY on submissions three times a day, I never lost a fight again, I actually won my next 7 fights by way of submission. Ask guys like Marc Laimon, Genki Sudo, Carlos Newton, Randy Couture, Matt Lindland, Frank Trigg etc etc, if I have any ground skills.

So one last time, next time please just check if the story is true. You can tell that I am getting sick of it right? That’s why I reacted.

Now if they DID put that in writing somewhere, please send the link from that “interview” to my website and I will take care of it because than they wrote down a lie.

Godspeed and party on!

FIGHTLINE.COM IS REPORTING THAT B.J. PENN WILL FIGHT THE WINNER OF GSP/FITCH ACCORDING TO B.J. HIMSELF.

by b.w on Jul 2, 2008 4:35 PM EDT up reply actions

Really?! The entire LW division just let out a huge sigh of relief.

by Haze on Jul 2, 2008 4:38 PM EDT up reply actions

i hear that!

by b.w on Jul 2, 2008 4:42 PM EDT up reply actions

ITS ALSO SUPPOSED TO BE A THE NEW YEARS EVE SHOW!

by b.w on Jul 2, 2008 4:38 PM EDT up reply actions

NICE! Won’t have to go to a bar and hail down a cab for 4 hours that night.-

by Derrick Fox on Jul 2, 2008 4:41 PM EDT up reply actions

Cool, thanks for the info. I’m a little disapointed that BJ doesn’t just clean out the LW division for a while, but a victory over GSP/Fitch would be huge for him. BJ being the first guy to hold two UFC belts at the same time would be awesome.

WAR BJ PENN!!!!!!!!!!!

by Haze on Jul 2, 2008 4:44 PM EDT up reply actions

Presumably Chuck and Rampage will be on around New Year’s too providing they win their next fights. What about Mir Nog?

by RobH86 on Jul 2, 2008 7:14 PM EDT up reply actions

A New Year’s Eve show is the worst idea since, well, they have had a lot of bad ideas. Luckily for us they have had a ton of good ones

by ViolentMike on Jul 3, 2008 10:34 AM EDT up reply actions

UFC 87 will go a long way towards determining BJ Penn’s future opponents. Penn recently told Fighters Club TV that he is set to move up to 170 to face the winner of UFC 87’s Georges St. Pierre vs. Jon Fitch contest. The fight, contingent on the health of the victor, will take place at the UFC’s annual New Year’s Eve card this December 27th in Las Vegas.

Penn also plans to retain his lightweight title and will likely face the winner of Kenny Florian vs. Roger Huerta, which also takes place at UFC 87, at a later date.

Penn also left open the option of moving up to middleweight after cleaning out the light and welterweight divisions.

Check out Penn’s comments http://www.fightline.com/index.cfm?page=video.videoById&videoId=53 in our video’s section.

Mine, was just a cut n paste job….I saw your post, I only posted this to point out that he will still defend the lightweight belt at a future date, and then he will be off to conquer the middleweight division!

can some one tell me, i know 4 sure the twister is not allowed in the bjj comps I compete in, are they allowed in mma?

by T_Dog on Jul 2, 2008 4:54 PM EDT up reply actions

Twisters are allowed in mma. Mayhem Miller attempted one on the WEC

by john on Jul 2, 2008 5:31 PM EDT up reply actions

a submission move like that will be the first death in ufc and the 2nd in mma LOL

that’s funny how??? bas is the man though

by kevin on Jul 2, 2008 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions

not as long as they tap quick! it kinda reminds me of a move i put on my cousin about 20 years ago when we were wrestling around. i put him in a full nelson and sat on his back and bent as hard as i could. he let out a death cry from hell and i let go real quick, cuz it even scared me. he still remembers that move still to the day!

by b.w on Jul 2, 2008 5:10 PM EDT up reply actions

That’s the old Camel Clutch that the Iron Sheik used in the 80s.

by PW on Jul 2, 2008 5:47 PM EDT up reply actions

WOW! Not alowed in bjj competition but still sweet.

by Wild Man on Jul 2, 2008 3:53 PM EDT reply actions

WHY IS IT NOT ALLOWED? thAT MOVE IS KICK ASS!

LOLOL.

by ViolentMike on Jul 2, 2008 5:00 PM EDT up reply actions

Why have I never seen this in a match? The RNC is pretty common, so it stands to reason that a RNC defense and counter should occur with some regularity.

by PW on Jul 2, 2008 5:50 PM EDT up reply actions

Its really hard to pull off. And fairly easy to counter, you then end up on your back with full or half guard. You wouldn’t normally give up someones back for a high risk move.

by MoonUK on Jul 2, 2008 6:33 PM EDT up reply actions

well, that sure shows how much of a noob mmafan i am, never seen or heard of that one before.. sweet.

by eightyproof on Jul 2, 2008 3:54 PM EDT reply actions

yeah i’ve never seen/heard of it before either but man does it look awesome!

by LiFt on Jul 2, 2008 4:53 PM EDT up reply actions

hey mania, everyone else’s links are getting put up, but not mine. If your going to make those 2 links front page stories, I get it and apologize, if not, why aren’t they going onto the comments?

by kevin on Jul 2, 2008 3:55 PM EDT reply actions

Because the two links you are incessantly trying to post have already been posted by me on the main page. In addition, they have absolutely nothing to do with this particular conversation.

by MMAmania on Jul 2, 2008 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions

I didn’t see the dana white one anywhere, my bad!

by kevin on Jul 2, 2008 4:00 PM EDT up reply actions

the only reason I was bugging is because my links have been getting up in record time lately, and I was surprised at my all of a sudden being blocked.

Can there really be a lw that compares to anderson silva not named BJ Penn?

by kevin on Jul 2, 2008 4:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Kevin: r u talking about Dana wanting to get rid of the middleweight and lightheavyuweight divisions in the WEC?

by john on Jul 2, 2008 4:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I hope he does get rid of those divisions. I would love to see Doug Marshal get demolised in the UFC.

by Haze on Jul 2, 2008 4:20 PM EDT up reply actions

I want to see Paulo Filho compete in the UFC…thats what I am waiting for, but Yeah, I wouldnt mind seeing Marshall get crushed either!

by john on Jul 2, 2008 4:47 PM EDT up reply actions

Marshall isn’t even in the WEC anymore.

by ViolentMike on Jul 2, 2008 5:01 PM EDT up reply actions

nope, how a lw on the new tuf show is going to be the new anderson silva!

by kevin on Jul 2, 2008 5:02 PM EDT up reply actions

Interesting! Tell me more!

by john on Jul 2, 2008 5:32 PM EDT up reply actions

JOHN. i read the same thing. he said that he (dana) didnt want to spill the beans, so it seems like he is a known fighter and he did say he was he was the next a.silva. but of course dana would never exagerate.

by b.w on Jul 2, 2008 8:27 PM EDT up reply actions

Oh well this is easy, if it is an already Known fighter thats being compared to Anderson Silva, I would have to guess its Paul “Semtex” Daley!

I have been wanting to see him on TUF for a long time now. If it is him, which I expect it to be, he will really help sell the UFC to the UK fans!

I could be wrong, but isnt that a lot like the twister?

by Scott on Jul 2, 2008 4:10 PM EDT reply actions

I could be wrong, but doesn’t the name of this move look eerily similar to “exorcist”.

by Craig on Jul 2, 2008 4:12 PM EDT reply actions

Gotta love a good smart ass!

by SkeletonKey on Jul 3, 2008 3:34 PM EDT up reply actions

it would be cool to see this movie actually applied in a fight. And can someone answer me this: when the hell is someone going to win my Gogoplata or Omoplata in the UFC…that move looks so useless during every fight and fighters are able to squirm out of it any chance they get. sorry but I always get excited when someone almost finishes a fight with a GoGo…and it never works!!

by LiFt on Jul 2, 2008 4:31 PM EDT reply actions

omoplata’s are used more as sweeps in the UFC.

I think eventually BJ Penn will want to show off and finish someone with either a gogo or an omo

by john on Jul 2, 2008 5:33 PM EDT up reply actions

It’s doable, just not likely. Any fighter with any decent BJJ training will be able to defend an omoplata or gogo well enough to not have to submit to it. Like I said, it’s doable, just unlikely in most fights.

by Craig on Jul 3, 2008 1:53 AM EDT up reply actions

isnt that the same as the twister?

by 12121212 on Jul 2, 2008 4:35 PM EDT reply actions

Want to talk about who’s the man. Eddie Bravo is the man.

by TABASCOsauce on Jul 2, 2008 4:44 PM EDT reply actions

IF SOMEONE CAN FINISH A FIGHT IN THE UFC WITH A GOGOPLATA OR OMOPLATA THE GUY SHOULD BE BJ PENN BUT THIS GUY HAS A GREAT STAND UP

by jow32 on Jul 2, 2008 4:50 PM EDT reply actions

yeah I can see that. BJ is so flexible he can come with submissions that other people wouldn’t dare attempt. nothing comes to mind but i’m sure there is something only flexible fighters can do. Like BJ-69cardenzza …patent pending.

by LiFt on Jul 2, 2008 4:56 PM EDT up reply actions

I dunno how practical this is. At the time the you release your hooks and shift your body to attempt to lock the right leg, the guy on top will be able to reverse easily and be in your guard. Just watch the video as the guy on bottom releases his hooks. Its hard to have back control with just your arms without hooks or a body lock. Especially if you’re sweaty.

Your opponent has to have pretty weak jits or bad awareness to fall into this sub.

by TABASCOsauce on Jul 2, 2008 4:53 PM EDT reply actions

like CB Dollaway?

by LiFt on Jul 2, 2008 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions

unless his mind is completely occupied with ducking that RNC. seems like its a counter to teh RNC counter…. oh yeah baby, double counter ftw.

by eightyproof on Jul 2, 2008 5:18 PM EDT up reply actions

was thinkng the same thing. When you’re in a bad spot like that, you are practiclly waiting for the guy holding you to let up a little bit.

by c-war on Jul 2, 2008 5:49 PM EDT up reply actions

your 100% correct, its a high risk move that rarely comes off. Gotta be insane to try it out in a MMA fight. BJ BJ BJ

going for the rnc if they tuck the chin it can be effective to cross face and transition to a neck crank and/or jaw crank but i wouldnt let go of the body lock and would use the same arm triangle form. its a pain submission not guaranteed to work but if not at least you still have your hooks in or body lock. the exorcist i think is unnecessary risk.
