UFC Quick Quote: Chuck Liddell deserves the next title shot

chuck liddell

"After I beat Rashad I think I deserve the next title shot."

-- Former light heavyweight champion Chuck Liddell tells MMANews.com that he deserves the next shot at the 205-pound crown that he used to sport if he can defeat Rashad Evans at UFC 88: "Breakthrough" in Atlanta, Ga., on September 6. "Iceman" rebounded from back-to-back losses to outpoint Wanderlei Silva on all three judges scorecards at UFC 79: "Nemesis" in December 2007. He is winless in two attempts against reigning division champion, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson. Lyoto Machida, Wanderlei Silva, Thiago Silva and Evans (with a win) are also among those who are in contention.

don’t think so. Machida deserves the shot next

i agree!

Machida beat Tito who is not ranked higher than Rashad or Wanderlei……..Machida needs a big win to seal the deal for a number 1 spot.

by c-war on Jun 29, 2008 1:15 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It would also help if Machida actually finished a few fights.

by naturalshadow on Jun 29, 2008 5:25 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I forgot to add that it would be a hell of a lot easier for the UFC to make big numbers off of a Chuck/Rampage fight than a Machida/Rampage fight. Most casual fans still have no idea who Machida is.

by naturalshadow on Jun 29, 2008 5:32 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

100% Correct. Forrest did not deserve a title shot but got one cos it will sell PPV and makes for a great story, TUF winner – TUF coach – Title short – Maybe champ? (probably not!!)

by MoonUK on Jun 29, 2008 10:19 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Machida defeated “the African Assasin” who was, and still is, a top ten fighter. He destroyed him too. Machida definitely deserves a title shot over any of the other 205 lb fighters in the division, including Chuck. Don’t forget, before chuck beat Wanderlei, he lost two fights in a row.

by BTT Fighter on Jun 29, 2008 10:46 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Machida beat Sokoudjou…and finished him. he is undefeated and has beaten everyone that they have put in front of him. There is no reason why is isn’t deserving of a title shot.

by Mikemick on Jun 29, 2008 12:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He beat Rich Framklin, BJ Penn, Stephan Bonner, Tito Ortiz and Sokoudjou without losing, he deserves it. Wait in line Chuck!!

I spoke to Chuck when he was in London for UFC 85, i asked him if Dana had promised the shot with a win and he said “yeah, its a lock”.

Like everyone above said it makes sense for the UFC for the following reasons…

1) Marketability 2) If Chuck wins the UFC rubber match would be huge 3) Machida has not beaten a top contender 4) Like him or not Chuck dominated the L/HW before the pride merger, that should bring weight to the table.

I want to see Machida vs Thiago, want Silva to chase him down and give him his first loss.

by nick j on Jun 29, 2008 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

What rubber match are you talking about. Chuck has been destroyed by rampage twice and hasn’t beaten him once. Its only a rubber match if its 1 to 1 and there is a tie breaker…I’m not ready to see chuck vs. rampage 3 with such lopsided outcomes of the first two.

by trbtrouble on Jun 29, 2008 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

he said the UFC rubber match…not counting the pride fights douche bag.

by newfie on Jun 29, 2008 5:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thanks, yeah your right.

Thats why i put the ‘UFC’ rubber match, its just hypeatheticly speaking IF Chuck won the next one, the PPV buys for the third UFC fight would be off the chart.

It all comes down to the $$’s. Machida is a nightmare to promote, boring personality + boring fighter + non US figher = get to the back of the que.

In reverse if you tick the above catogories your in luck, just like Forrest.

by nick j on Jun 29, 2008 7:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

chuck lost two straight (One included Jardine) and he barely got past Wandy. He needs to get his ass in the back of the “que”

Machida is undefeated. He has made a style that people cant fight and he wins. You wouldnt be talking if you were on the oppisite side of the cage with the dragon so have some respect for the guy.
Very sick of hearing how boring he is. How he doesnt finish fights. I would say 13-0 speaks for itself. And last time I checked he fought no slouches.

by TrueMMa on Jun 30, 2008 12:27 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The title shot in the 205 lb division MUST go thru Machida, and Chuck knows this. That’s why he is saying this crap publicly. He and his trainer want no part of a fight with Machida. Ducking the #1 contender??? That sounds a bit familiar. But last time, Chuck was the one getting ducked, not doing the ducking.

I mean, who really wants to see Chuck get owned and KO’d by Rampage, again? Unless you have a mohawk, beer belly, paint your toe nails, or any combination of those, you are not rooting for Rampage/Liddell 3.

Haven’t read thru the thead, but where is Chucky at saying Chuck gives Dana oral pleasures??

by ViolentMike on Jun 30, 2008 10:44 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

First thing is Chuck lost to Rampage in Pride during a tournament, its hard to fight a Pride tournament in which Rampage lost to Wandy. Chuck lost a lame decision to Jardine. It happens after you get KTFO’d. Though Machida is 13-0 Thiago Silva also sprts a 13-0 record with some tough matches and more importantly more finishes. I think Chuck does deserve the next title shot seeing as he was former champion, has better style fights, more promotable. Be honest with yourselves just because you hate that people say Machida’s fighting style is boring doesn’t change the fact that his fighting style is boring. Maybe Chuck should have to face another tough competitor before he faces Rampage but instead I think Chuck should get the next title shot against Rampage while Lyoto and Silva face off on the same card to see who would get the next title shot against the winner of that fight. Makes sense and it seems to be fair in my mind. You have to respect a reigning champ and give him his fair shot. He at least didn’t call for an immediate rematch, he’s tried to work his way back up.

by Smokes on Jun 30, 2008 12:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This is just crap. THe way they are handing out title shots these days is starting to really make me dislike the UFC. Its not about who deserves it anymore, its all about who sells the most pay per views….What a joke!

Like I said the other day, they gave Chuck the easiest contender to ensure that he gets the next tite s hot! UFC matchmakers are making a mockery of the best division in the world!

this is just sad!

John, who do you think is more deserving than Chuck with a win over Rashad? Machida? He beat his first top ten with a slow UD and that’s if you consider Ortiz a top ten. Hendo already had his chance. Thiago hasnt even come close to fighting a top ten yet, although he has finished his fights quite nicely. Rua? he would need a dominant win to earn one after a sub loss to Forrest. Wanderlei? another dominant win like he did with Jardine could make a case as well. Any boring UD’s wont take you to the top very fast. I also think if Rashad beats Chuck, he would be next in line.

by c-war on Jun 29, 2008 12:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sokoudjou was a top 10 fighter and is still on many lists including Sherdog.com and Machida finished him.

by DB on Jun 29, 2008 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

C-War my beef is that the UFC had crowded the division with irrelevant fights so that they can Justify giving Chuck an easy Road for the title.

Machida was a contender as was tHigo Silva. Instead of matching up Tiago Silva vs. Machida at UFC 84,they matched the 2 contenders against non contenders. If they would have faced each other at UFC 84 like they should have, the UFC could not justify not giving the winner a title shot. So they clouded up the 2 contenders, Machida and Silva. so that they could give Chuck a title shot because they expect him to KO Rashad (a tailor made opponent for chuck). Especially since wany is ony on a 1 fight winning streak, and jardine is out of contention.

Starting with UFC 84, all the matchmaking in the light heavyweight division wAS constructed to give Chuck the best possibility at being the next #1 contender.

Say I am WRong?

by john on Jun 29, 2008 2:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

errr he fought Wandi coming off a Jardine loss and was suppose to fight Rua originally before he got hurt. Those two would be the toughest of all opponents in my opinion. I’m sorry but you’re wrong, lol.

Not sure why you have so much hatred for Chuck and Forrest with these strange conspiracy theories but its all good. However I do agree that Joe Silva really sucks sometimes and messed up not putting Machida against Thiago.

by c-war on Jun 29, 2008 5:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’m not really sure that Chuck is deserving of another shot just yet but at the same time I want to argue that Machida vs Tito was a good booking decision.

Tito was leaving no matter what, and the UFC took a big name fighter (a top contender in the eyes of the casual fan) and sacrificed him to Machida. While that win might not have given Machida much more credibility in the eyes of the hardcore fan it will certainly have garnered more interest amongst the casual fans than a win over Thiago Silva would have.

Cwar: Because he was supposed to fight Rua, thats supposed to count for something? Come on man , I am a huge Liddell fan, but I am sick of the favoritism that he is being shown

Chuck vs. Rashad is an absolutely joke and an insult to my intelligence. If Chuck wants to really be the #1 contender he should have to go through machida, not Rashad! Oh but Chucks camp doesnt want to fight Machida.its just BS and it stinks!

all this favoritism for what,so I can sit through Rampage destroying him for the 3rd tine? Whats the point, none of the previous 2 fights have even been competitive!

I wouldnt mind giving chuck another title shot if he beats:
Machida
Wandy
THiago
or rematch with Jardine

anybody but Rashad

by john on Jun 29, 2008 6:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

All that I ask out of the UFC is that they decide #1 contenders by performance and by which fighter deserves a shot at the title instead of who is more marketable. Thats all!

Machida is being screwed just as Okami has been in the middleweight division. I could care less if fans think they are boring…I care about the integrity of the UFC and I want to see deserving #1 contenders, not which fighters sell the most pay per views.

Is that really too much to ask for? These days it seems so!

by john on Jun 29, 2008 7:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sorry mate, your right but it is never going to happen. Its all about the $$’s.

Hence Randy, Frank Mir, Forrest, hell even Rampage after one UFC win all got/getting shots.

Even (don’t get me started on it) TUF4, giving a reality winner a shot i mean WTF?

Its the fight game ite the same with Boxing, when the money coming in is fueled by hype and buzz over a fight, popular fighters will always be at the front of the que.

by nick j on Jun 29, 2008 7:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

then its never going to be a true mainstream sport. If sports opperated this way we would see the Lakers vs. the Celtics every year in the NBA finals.

UFC shuold just let the chips fall were they may, give the most deserving guy a title shot, and it will all work its self out!

by john on Jun 30, 2008 6:56 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

john, I agree with the idea that the most deserving guy should get the title shot. The UFC is a huge marketing machine, they could hype Machida and still make a lot of cash. Chuck’s nearing the end of his career, they are probably just setting the stage for his last chance… Simular to how they gave Hughes that chance where one win possibly sets up another title shot.

by Arnold on Jun 30, 2008 8:04 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’ll stand with John. It just seems that the UFC’s Brass thinks that " hey..no one will know. their dumb..they take what ever we feed them. " I think they’re right. Peeps like us are hooked to this Sport like uncut Coke. The UFC is the main Dealer. I see hwat you see..but I don’t see things being they way they should. It’s F’d up. So Chuck gets Destroyed 2X by Page. Loses to Jardine?? Beats Wandy..in Wandy’s UFC return..now is fighting ( a wrestler ) Rashad?? To get a title shot.. Come on man..who writes this stuff.

Lyoto hasn’t gone threw anyone yet. Tired of seeing his name on every blog this site has. I would love to see Lyoto vs Shogun, then one of them can have a title shot.

by Derrick Fox on Jun 29, 2008 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I want to see Lyoto vs. Wandy. I think that Silva has the perfect style to take out Machida.

by naturalshadow on Jun 29, 2008 3:41 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

standing, Wanderlei has the perfect strategy to defeat Machida: Gressive Brutal sriking, with a great chin that will hold up against Machida’s punching power. THe problem is that Machida would take Wanderlei to the ground where he is light years ahead of wandy in both wrestling and especially Ju jitsu. if they were to fight Wandy wouuld ge submtted by Machida, and I dont want to see Wanderlei loose to anyone but Rampage!!!!

Machida vs. THiago Silva s a much more appealing fight because thiago has the wanderlei-like agressive and powerful chutebox striking, a great chin that Machida would not be able to rock. MOre importantly, tHiago has the ju jitsu skills neccessary to survive against Machida on the ground.

I give tHiago Silva the best chance of beating Machida out of everyone in the UFC lightweight division besides Rampage, who I dont see anyone loosing to anyone for the next couple of years!

wandy is a BJJ black belt… no way machida submits him

by Harrison on Jun 29, 2008 5:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

True, you can’t just say that “Wandy would get submitted”. Wandy fought Sakuraba 3 times and beat him 3 times. I don’t honestly think that Machida has a better submission game than Sakuraba.

by naturalshadow on Jun 30, 2008 3:48 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Listen I am one of the biggest wanderlei fans on the PLANET, but I have to keep it real. HIs ju jitsu black belt is BS. Yes it was given to him, but his ju jitsu is not deserving of a black belt. Brown belts like hazlett or Nate Diaz have ju jitsu light years ahead of wanderei. He does not have the skills needed to earn a black belt….trust me on this!

Most of the sakuraba fights remained standing, and in Pride it was easier to defend ju jitsu, when the grounded fighter is trying to grab u, u just kick the grounded opponent in the face.

Please believe me that if Wanderei goes to the ground with either Machida or Thiago Silva, wanderlei will be forced to tap! I do not want to see that happen to wandy one of my favorites of all time.

His back belt iis not legit, but its getting better now that he works with ju jistu god JACRE!!

by john on Jun 30, 2008 6:53 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This just shows your ignorance. Wanderlei was awarded a black belt because he was wanderlei. Wanderlei’s ju jitsu doesnt even measure up to brown belts like Hazlett or Nate Diaz.

I am t he biggest wanderlei fan on Earth, so I dont ike talking bad about him, but trust me on this, he is not a real Brazilian Ju Jistu black belt. On the ground Machida and Thiago couuld very easily submit Wanderlei….I hope it doesnt happen though.

Different camps have different criteria for awarding black belts in ju jistu. Wanderlei’s ju jist is really not at a black belt level IMO,

Regardless he is one of my favorite fighters ever, but if you think that Machida wouldnt submit wandy if the fight went to the ground…..u have a lot to learn.

Sakuraba fights took part mostly in the stand up, and Pride was different, cuz you could just Kick a guy in his face, or stomp on his head while he was on the ground attempting a submission.

John: Wandy wa given a bjj black belt by Carlinhos Gracie at Gracie Barra. One of my training partnters at GB was there. I wasn’t. Is Wandy a Brazilian JiuJitsu Black belt. Yes. Is he an outstanding BJJ blk belt at the MMA level no. People that train BJJ get belts for different reasons. I knew of a guy that got promoted to Blue and could not tap ANYBODY. The reason he promoted was he could not be tapped. He had phenomal ground defense. Back to Wandy.. I do not think in a MMA match Wandy would be tapped by Machida or Thiago. In a BJJ match..most likely..yeah. As we all know Wandy is one of the tuffest Mofo’s out there. He knows enough BJJ that Carlinhos awarded him a Blk belt..if Wandy was not sound enough on the ground regardless of him being Wandy..no way Carlinhos would of promoted him. Don’t expect to see Wandy start arm barring/heel hooking dudes left and right. He is cavemanish axe murdering bad man in the cage. His cup of tea..is the Knock you senseless. I think Thiago would be a tuffer task than Machida for Wandy..there are different levels of Skill in BJJ..Wandy’s is not up there with the Penn’s, Jacere’s, Garcia’s, Renzo’s, Almeida’s, Roger’s..but it is at a level where he does what he does best. Beat the crap out of people.

What’s more impressive… wins over Wandy and Rashad(better chance than people think to win this fight) or wins over Sokoudjou and a very faded Tito? Who Chuck destroyed twice! I think you make the case for both but if Chuck has only 3-4 more fights in him, why not give him another shot? I have no problem with that. Your thoughts guys?

by Robert on Jun 30, 2008 8:57 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think your right here, I think fiveounces had an article on it. We are not calling the super fights before their time has come. How many fights do you think guys like Rich Franklin, Wanderlei Silva, Chuck Liddell, Randy Couture, Fedor Emelianko and Matt Hughes have left? You have to make sure that the fights that need to happen, the super fights, actually do happen and well before the fighter turns into an Evan Tanner. I want to see if Chuck has it in him to be Champ again, and I know they should throw Machida at him because I think Machida would get stuffed. Anyway look at the main point here all fighters think they are the best and that they deserve the belt. Chuck reined with that belt he should have been calling for a rematch after completing the triangle of defeat by beating Wandy (Wandy bests Rampage who bests Chuck who best Wandy). Chuck also stated that he wanted to face Rua when he was healthy but still they gave him Rashad (which is a total joke). Still that said I want to see if Chuck can beat Rampage or if maybe he should move to HW lol, and at the same time I think it would be fair for a Machida Silva fight and a Wandi Rua fight. Honestly thats the best outcome us fans can ask for because then we have the winner of Silva Lyoto facing the winner of Chuck Rampage and then the winner of Wandy Rua facing the loser of the Loyota Silva for another number 1 contender. Seriously how many great fights did we just get there? I see johns point but I’m just looking at it from what Joe could do to fix this.

“Machida hasn’t gone through anyone yet.” Um what!? He easily handled two top 10 light heavyweights in his last two fights. The guy fights to win. He sure as hell deserves a title shot over Forrest Griffin. Let’s take a look at Griffin’s last few fights- Beats a flabby Shogun with a blown out knee ( I was there by the way),gets taken the distance by Hector Ramirez(which is pathetic),smashed by Jardine, and beat by Ortiz.

shogun=rampages last loss, everyones golden boy light HW before the loss. cant blame forest for the other guys conditioning.

Jardine= beat chuck (decisively), was killed by alexander (which doesnt make him a better fighter) also s*** happens

ortiz+ i dont even count that, one of the worst calls ever.

machida= training to be olympic runner

i was impressed with him on the ground at the end of the 1st against ortiz, but other than that his style is "STAND UP LAY & PRAY)…feel free to steal that if ya like lol.

I was a big fan of both Forrest and Chuck, but the UFC is causing me to root against them. 1st the UFC overlooks a bunch of true contenders and awards Forrest an unwarrented title shot, now they are giving Liddell the easiest road back to a title shot (Rashad).

I really hate to root against Chuck, but I am starting to hope that Rashad finds a way to beat him. I dont care if Rashad has to dry hump him for 15 minutes. Just please win, Rashad.

I shouldnt have to sit through Rampage/Liddell 3, after the 1st 2 fights werent even competitive!

WAR Rashad! (I cant believe I just said that) lol

I second that….and I’m a huge Liddell fan, but come on…a win over Rashad earns you a title shot? I think he knows he is gonna retire soon and wants to get a shot at that title before his contract runs out.

by Chadx23 on Jun 29, 2008 1:25 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He took out Wandy too…who also demolished Jardine.

Wins vs. Wandy and Evans are bigger than wins over Sick Dog and Shogun IMO.

I think Liddell gets the title shot. If/When Rampage beats Forrest, a Liddell/Rampage 3 has a lot of selling power. To see if Chuck can beat Rampage. If Chuck loses, there are guys like Thiago Silva, Machida, Brandon Vera, James Irvin that are still primed for a title shot.

by TabascoSAUCE on Jun 29, 2008 3:35 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Even if he beats Evans I don’t think Liddell deserves a title shot; his fights are inconsistent (gets dropped by Jardine? and looked terrible in his win over Wanderlei—just doing what he had to to get the descision). Whoever wins Liddell or Evans fights Machita; winner gets to fight Rampage.

I completely agree that the if Chuck beats Rashad, he should then have to beat Machida to get a shot at the title ut in all honesty it wont happen.

Chuck will beat Rashad, get another crack at the title, and then get RAMPAGED all over again!

Its a shame that this will happen, especialy when there are so many top fighters in the division!

People need to stop Ducking machida and fight him!

I third the idea that if Chuck beat Rashad, he has to fight Machida before being considered for a third shot to lose to Rampage….I like Chuck as much as the next guy but to me it seems as if Rampage is Chucks Kryptonite. There are so many fighters in this class that needto be showcased..to

I just think Chuck vs. Machida could turn out to be a snooze fest. Lets face it, as “elusive” a fighter he was against Tito, he would probably come in wearing track shoes and pull a Starnes against Liddell.

by naturalshadow on Jun 29, 2008 3:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Why should Liddell have to fight Machida? Who has Machida beaten? Tito (sucks) and Sokoudjou (average). Machida is at least one or two fights away from a title fight. That being said, I’d love to see him fight an aggressive fighter like Thiago.

Chuck Liddell is getting old. You say who has Machida beaten? Who has Chuck beaten lately? His merit is on his name alone. The only reason why Chuck deserves a shot is $$$$$$$. Rampage already destroyed him twice…do you see anyone calling for a Franklin v Silva third match??? I don’t think so…this is a similar situation. What is Chuck going to bring this time? His fighting skills aren’t what they used to be and neither are this new breed of 205 opponents that are going to kill him. He’s only going down-hill from here. Mark my words.

by RedDog on Jun 29, 2008 7:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thank You for stating that. Chuck fighting for a chance to fight Rampage again is absurd, and the Rich Franklin point is perfect. Though I admit Chuck and Machida would end up being a boring fight, to counter punchers, fighting, I do think it is time that Machida gets the opportunity to shine. They feed Chuck Jardine, who he was supposed to walk through and lost. Now they feed him Rashad, if he should lose this is he still always going to be one fight away from a contender? How come is the other weight classes if a contender loses he is at the bottom of the heap, ie. KAro Parisyan off the top of my head quickly…Chuck needs to tie together a few wins before he gets a title shot…

GSP got another title shot after beating just 2 guys? AA got a rematch immidiately… BJ title shot after just 1 win (jens pulver)… matt hughes after just 1 win after loosing (chris lytle)… chuck dominated for so long and just came of one of the best UFC fights in history against one of the fighters in MMA history… regardless of Jardine Chuck is next in line!! Machida and Thiago Silve should put their 0’s on the line for a # 1 contender, followed by Wandy should he get 1 more win

by WHAT? on Jun 29, 2008 12:08 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

thank you man…machida, is good but his last win was over Ortiz? come on, ortiz isnt close to being a top contender. machida needs to win at least one more b4 he gets a title shot. liddell was on top for so long and most people who lose their title have to win 1 or 2 to get back a title shot and even though liddell lost to jardine, jardine just got his ass kicked so liddell should be next in line.

ye but gsp beat the two best in the division and was beaten by a fluke by serra! also he stepped up for the interim fight! remember if your an interim champ the champ has to fight you to decide the true champ! and you cant compare chuck beating tito and babalu to gsp dominating trigg, hughes, koscheck, sherk and serra! he even beat bj penn! no way chuck deserves a title shot!
wandy lost 3 fights in a row and all he did with chuck was swing for the bleachers! no gameplan at all! if chuck wants a title shot he needs to fight someone other then rashad!
and gsp didnt loose just after he lost the title! he out wrestled one of the best wrestlers in the history of mma!
big difference between that and dropping a decision to jardine!

by the heat on Jun 29, 2008 11:06 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, but GSP didn’t lose the title… And then lose again. Chuck lost 2 in a row. BIG difference. Also Jardine has been on the receiving end of 2 KO’s of the night (when he got KO’d by Houston and Wandy, both in the first round). It makes it look even worse when Chuck, the KO king, loses to someone that is on other peoples highlight reels.

gsp did not lose the next fight like chuck did.Chuck was destroyed by rampage he has only won one match ,and he is coming off of an injury . Tito is not a contender huh thats interesting seeing how if chuck beats rashad ,and he is number 1 contender ,but tito whipped rashad ,and tito is a bum so what is rashad ,who has he beat ,but now you got to beat him to get a title shot, something is wrong with that picture

didn’t you see Wandy whupped Jardine who defeated Liddel? that tells me that Wandy does have the potential to defeat Chuck. yea Chuck did defeat Wandy but Wandy had hard time tuning with octagon but for now he’s bred with the cage and you sayin you don’t wanna see them fight again? you are an idiot. it’s too early for Vera to fight Wandy, he need to fight 2-3 LHW bouts before takin on the big guys.

i’ve already seen the UFC 79, that was a great fight but Wandy wasn’t fightin like he was back then, he even gave Chuck a quick semi knockout for a sec as he fell down. Don’t underestimate Wandy, that dude whupped Rampage twice by knockout back in Pride and he’s likely to to fight him again in UFC. you don’t know anything about Wandy.

I think pretty much everybody could see this coming. Has a lot more to do with Chucks previous reign then his current wins.
With Chuck at 38 years old, i’m not against it. Are there probably more deserving fighters? Yeah, Machida and Thiago could make a case. Let Chuck get that final shot of winning (and maybe retiring) with the belt, the world will keep on turning.

by c-war on Jun 29, 2008 1:16 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This is the UFC. I dont think recent strength of wins were the factors in Mir, Eilers, Buentello, Lutter, Serra, or Horn getting title shots.
Marquardt got a title shot after beating Dean Lister for gods sake.

“That is only the case where no other worthy contenders are present”

Really? The UFC has an official system they use to determine top contenders? They dont.

I think a lot of people look at it how they think it should be done, instead of how it is actually done.
If you are a draw, and you get on a streak, the title shot is yours.

by Jason on Jun 29, 2008 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with everything you’ve said Jason. Like Dana said, you can’t make everyone happy and there has been plenty of people that got a title shot that didn’t deserve it. Chuck is not getting any younger and he is an icon for the UFC. The UFC would be stupid not to give him another chance. They would be shooting themselves in the foot because I know a lot of casual UFC fans that only buy pay per views when Chuck is fighting. Kind of like boxing was when Mike Tyson was in his prime. People can hate all they want but Chuck has done a lot for the sport here in America and he is one reason that there are a lot of hardcore fans. I guaratee that Chuck vs. Rampage 3 would sell at least 5 million more pay per views then Rampage vs Machida or Rampage vs Thiago Silva or anyone else for that matter and he may not be as deserving as some guys but Chuck will not fighting much longer and everyone will get their chance. It’s all about the Benjimans!

by jimmy_dean on Jun 29, 2008 6:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree neither Thiago or Machida have beaten anybody that would warrant them a title shot. Right now, i think Chuck is the most deserving.

But everybody is one fight short of a title shot, so it depends if beating Rashad does the cut or not.

ortiz sokoudjou nakamura ! are they not credible fighters

by the heat on Jun 29, 2008 4:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, they are credible fighters, but i don’t think those wins warrant a title shot. No Way!

1. Ortiz is free falling from the top ten.
2. Sokoudjou doesn’t even have 8 professional fights! (not to mention that Chucks training partner Teixeira destroyed him and knocked him out).
3. Nakamura has almost as many loses as wins! And has shown that he cant hang with the elite. (and PLEASE don’t reference Randleman in 05).

So no I completely disagree that Machida deserves a title shot. That doesn’t say that i don’t think he’s close. I think he needs a win against an elite fighter before he gets his chance.

Thats why i would rather see Chuck vs Machida, or Wanderlei vs Machida to decide who’s next.

What I’m certain is that there are quite a few fighters that are one win away from a title shot.

by chris on Jun 29, 2008 7:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

by Jason T on Jun 29, 2008 12:16 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Your so wrong. Rashad’s style is Taylor made for a Liddel KO. He wont be able to take Chuck down because nobody can and he won’t be able to stand with Chuck. He’ll be just like the long string of grapplers sent Chuck’s way while he held onto the belt.

machida is so boring noone wants to watch him in a main event

2 wins in a row for a champion that was recently dethroned would usually mean a title shot, but he lost to Rampage and then lost to Jardine for his comeback. He needs more than 2 wins if he lost twice. Rashad is just a grappler with sub-par striking like Babalu, Jeremy Horn, and Tito. I don’t think Rashad can pull it off. But Greg Jackson knows how to prepare for a fight and his gameplan against Jardine worked(just not for Wanderlie). It’s gonna be a pretty interesting to see who controls the fight, but I don’t think it’ll be very exciting.

Yeah, I’m not going to be getting my party pants out for that one. I think Dana wants a Liddel vs Jackson 3, and I also think that it’s going to be a lot more competitive than the last one. The fact that they lobbed Rashad to him shows they’re eager to get him in on the title as soon as possible. Personally I’d say he’d need to beat Thiago first, or Machida, but I don’t really care either way. It’ll be interesting to see what Greg Jackson does to try and keep Chuck down tbh.

Chuck has beat Randy twice, Vitor Belfort, Tito Twice, Babalu twice, Guy Mezger, and Kevin Randleman to name a few. DaGrizzilyBear I am the biggest Wanderlei fan you will ever meet but Wandy didn’t beat Chuck. There was one point in the fight when Wandy rocked Chuck and Wandy might have won one round but Chuck easily won two. Machida or Thiago doesn’t have the Resume that Chuck Liddell has and that is the the bottom line but what is so funny about all of you Chuck haters is that 99.9% of you were fans of his but he loses a few fights and oh Chuck is a fat bum that needs to go to Elite Xc and fight Kimbo and blah blah blah. Rampage vs Forrest

Contenders ranked IMO

1. Liddell
2. Machida
3. Evans
4. Thiago Silva
5. Wandy

The UFC isn’t a league where the most deserving fighter gets the title shot. Contenders are made by ticket sales. It is what it is. I’m sure the UFC would love to have Shogun on that list or have Wandy higher than Evans.

But where’s the money? Wandy vs. Rampage or Evans vs. Rampage?

by TabascoSAUCE on Jun 29, 2008 3:43 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Thiago Silva being considered for title contention is ridiculous. Who has he beat that’s worthy?? Seriously, he deserves it less than Stefan Bonnar and Matt Hamill right now (imo he’d lose to both too..) People need to see past stupid win streaks and look into the competition, Machida deserves the next shot b/c of his win-streak AGAINST TOP COMPETITORS!! T. Silva needs at least two fights against well-known ranked fighters (Soko? Hamill? Jardine?) to be considered a real freakin’ threat.

by The Mymus on Jun 29, 2008 3:47 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

So you’re telling me that Forrest’s last 5 fight 3-2 record losing to Ortiz, Jardine, and beating Bonnar, Sick Dog, and an unproven UFC fighter in Shogun is what you consider beating real competition?

The fighters don’t make the fights. They fight who the UFC puts in front of them.

Thiago Silva is 5-0 in the UFC and has finished ALL of them. Beating James Irvin and Houston Alexander (who destoryed your buddy Jardine) looks great on Silva’s resume. I never said he’s the next in line to fight Rampage. But his stock is higher than Soko, Hamill, and Jardine’s glass jaw.

Besides, who did Rampage beat in the UFC before he got his title shot? Marvin Eastman? Drew Mcfedries just ran over Marvin Eastman faster and more convincingly than Rampage. Does Mcfedries deserve a title shot now too?

That list is just my opinion. The UFC will give the title shot to the most marketable fighter. And the division is stacked right now which makes this debate a lot more interesting than talking about the MW division.

I want to see Rashad pull out a Salmon style headkick.

I’d say they will put Machida vs Silva, and winner of that is “back up contender” incase Rashad beats Liddell.

That way Liddell can win another fight then fight winner of Machida/Silva/Rampage.

He’s a huge draw and he will always be “deserving the next title shot” as far as he, Dana White and the UFC is concerned.

Chuck vs Rampage 3 will be a waste of time.

Rampage will smash him again, It’s hilarious Dana said “everyone wants to see chuck vs rampage 3”.

If ppl want to see Chuck get KTFO again, then he is probably right.

Chuck deserves it. but if he loses then he is over and should become the “gatekeeper” for the division leaders.

by Brian on Jun 29, 2008 5:45 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Without doubt Chuck needs to beat Machida before he gets a title shot, in fact I think Machida should be next in line. Whether you think he is boring or not (I personally find Sherk more boring) no one has been able to beat him. If Chuck thinks he is deserving of s shot, then he should take out Machida. I think Machida would beat him in a similar fashion to Jardine, but Jardine definately kicks and punches harder than Machida. Silva has the best chance of taking out Machida. Chuck could well be looking at how little Forrest did before he got his shot or Mir for that matter. If he is then I can see where he is coming from as the only real reasoning there was because they are two of the more popular fighters in the UFC and will generate the bucks. If it was done fairly and without any bias then Machida should be next or at the very least Chuck should have to fight him to get a shot, but as we have seen the UFC are not concerned about whats fair when title shots are involved, it’s about which fights will make them the most money. I think Rashad will be able to take Chuck down, he has one of the most explosive takedowns in the division. It’s trying to keep Chuck down that will be difficult. If Rashad comes to fight and not bounce and dance around, I can see him taking this fight possibly by descision, but as I have said before, he will be screwed if thinks he can get away with just doing enough to win, because then they will definately give it to Chuck.

Chuck needs to get it out of his head that he can beat anyone. Without the right training, he won’t win. Jardine should have taught him that.

Machida is simply a round stealer. im no Liddell fan but id much rather see him fight Rampage again then Machida try to steal the title. Personally id love to see Wandy win another fight against a top ranked fighter then take on the winner of Chuck-Rampage after they squash rashad and griffin

Where was the outcry when Nog got a title shot for beating Heath Herring, or Anderson Silva over Leben, Rampage over Eastman?

by KS on Jun 29, 2008 7:10 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

There’s a difference. The UFC’s LHW division is the most stacked division in all of MMA. When Anderson Silva got his immediate title shot, there were no other real contenders. Same goes with Big Nog. After the whole Randy mess, and with AA’s contract uncertainty, there was no clear cut contender. So, why not give it to the guy who’s a top 3 HW in the world? Why should he have to wait?

As for Rampage getting a shot right away.. Remember, at that time the LHW division wasn’t stacked yet. The PRIDE guys hadn’t come over yet. Machida was at the beginning of his run. Jardine and Forrest didn’t have enough wins. Chuck had just beaten Tito and Babalu for a second time. So, there was no one to face Chuck. At that point, with their history, and Rampage’s 4 fight win streak, Rampage was easily the number one contender.

by R-Dizzle on Jun 29, 2008 7:26 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

So you think that all of those guys should have been gatekeepers to a title shot?

by KS on Jun 29, 2008 10:01 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You even mention their history, that’s the reason Chuck will get a shot: to avenge one of his only losses in the octagon. You can’t really say it would be Rampage vs Chuck 3 because the first fight was in Pride with a ring and with different rules. Chuck vs Rampage 2 is a no brainer!

Machida needs to beat a contender to be a contender, same with Thiago. Put them against each other and the winner gets a shot at Rampage/Griffin vs Chuck/Evans winner. Then Wandy gets a shot after all that is said and done.

by Harrison on Jun 29, 2008 5:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It should be Machida/Liddell at UFC 88 to determine who gets the next title shot. I think Dana is a little worried about Liddell losing and the fight not being exciting. That wouldn’t be good for the UFC.

Rashad is a perfect matchup for Liddell’s style. Dana knows that. He also knows that Liddell/Rampage would get a lot more PPV buys than Machida/Rampage. So, I wouldn’t blame him for making the fight happen.

I personally would rather see a Wandy/Rampage title fight in the UFC. That would be great. Unfortunately, Wand needs another big win before that can happen.

Why do people on this forum even want to see machida fight at all? His fights are boring because he constantly runs and has no punching power.

Also why does anyone want to see rashad fight i sure dont b/c all he does is lay/pray and dance around.

To me thiago silva or james irvin would be good matchups for chuck b/c at least they go for the finish when they fight and not for a ud.

some other questions….. who does wandy fight next(Soku)?
a.silva/irvin – where does that put either one after a W?
Jardine vs Goran Rejic?, thiago silva needs a big name opponent but who?, and finally dont forget to throw in some names like Tim Botesch, Matt Hammil, Bonnar and Rua.

i cant wait for chuck to maul rashad

my dream is chuck winning then betaing rampage

and then wanderlei noitches up one or 2 more wins in the meantime and can face chuck
would love to see a 5 round war between them

the axe murderers reign in pride should be enough to get him a title shot especially against rampage

both shogun and wanderlei have legit claims for the next title shot regardless of their respective losses to forrest , and crocop/hendo/chuck

from the ufcs POV chuck in a title shot is where the $$$$$$ are going to be… chuck doesnt have too many years left so they need to give him the chance of a last run with the belt before hes gone… like randy he has earnt it with what he has done for the sport over the last decade or so

No offense but in the 56 comments above I think we have three distinct camps…

The folks who think the that the #1 contender should get the shot at Ramp/Griff…of which I am one.

The folks who want to see the “Biggest draw” irregardless of who is legitimately in contention. (I think to a certain degree this is the “official” UFC stance as well).

And finally….

The “Chucksters” who think Chuck should get the shot “no matter what”. These folks would be howling for Chuck to get a shot if he was on a 5 fight losing streak…LOL!!

It’s all good folks…But just for S&G’s who do all of you think is the legitimate (leave out the emotion) #1 contender?

TRUE MMA fans don’t really want to see Chuck/Page III. Most bandwagon fans only have watched the second fight, but Rampage absolutely dominated both fights. A Wandy matchup v Rampage makes more sense than Chuck (having a contender that has beaten the champ twice is better than having a contender that lost twice already).
Lyoto is better than both those guys anyway, and should be next in line. Bandwagon fans, quit bashing the most intellegent fighter (with the exception on maybe BJ) in all of MMA. The guy absolutely schools everyone he fights, and you all hate him for it. If you only want blood, lets bring back ancient Roman gladiators and get rid of the “art”.
All this speculation on who is next in line really depends on A Silva anyway. He is now the top draw, and he should have the final say in how quickly he wants to fight for the 205 title.

I just had a look at the UFC’s list of LHW’s and there are not too many guys who stand out as real championship material at this point.

I was surprised to see that they had the Spider Silva in the LHW category already, and that got me thinking – could he be the next challenger?

Now that would be a real fight, and would sell some serious PPV’s.

It would also give the middleweights a chance to produce a proper challenger. I think Okami deserves a shot, but I would like to see him kick a little more a$$ before he gets the shot. He needs to seem dominant, not just capable before he gets a chance at the belt.

i agree with efisher i honestly dont see anyone in the lhw division who could beat matchida.hes got a horrible style and theres no one out there who you can bring into your training camp to simulate his style.as far as lyoto getting a title shot hes wooden/unmarketable and bores most people to death even though it is a unique style.i see chuck getting the next shot if he beats evans due to his popularity but dont be surprised if its wandy if he wins one more.winning streaks dont really matter as earlier posters have said these are the fights the fans are clamouring for especially the wandy fight i reckon page under ibarra wipes the floor with silva ko due to powerbomb!!

Machida is very skillful and elusive, but I could not imagine him avaoiding Wandi for three rounds. I could see Wandi eventually catching up with him whatever round it is in and taking him to pieces. Wandi doesn’t give a crap about getting hit, which in this case I think would work to his advantage. Chuck threw everything but the kitchen sink at Wandi and still couldn’t take him out. He would have no problem eating strikes of off Machida and at some point I could definately see Machida getting caught. This would definately be a classic case of the bull and the matador. It would be an interstng fight. I could also see Machida and Chuck being something like Cung Le and Shamrock, with Machida being Cung Le giving Chuck a lesson in the art of striking.

The fact that Rampage has already beat him twice is enough for him to NOT be the next in line for a shot (assuming Rampage gets through Forrest). Has to be Machida that gets the next shot (even though i really dont like him).

Lyoto Machida is an above average fighter. He is over rated for sure. He is a master at winning decisions. It seems like he goes into fights and his strategy from the begging is to win by decision. He couldn’t even finish Sam Hoger and David Heath. Lets see him fight some top 10 ranked LHW and see what he really can do. I think Chuck would get the knockout with Machida in the first round.

Jon Fitch got a title shot and he deserves it. Okami has to get the next shot at MW, not really a title contender in HW YET, LW has huerta or florian. LHW should be either Lyto vs. Thiago. That should settle it. I wouldn’t mind seeing Wandy go In vs. Chuck again. WANDy didn’t train right for UFC 79. but at Ill Will he was back. that doesnt make sense….Chuck beat Tito…Forrest lost to Tito, and Jardine…he beat Ramirez and an out of shape worhtless Shogun and he gets a title shot? Why dont we all jsut admit that it really doesnt matter who DESERVES a title shot, because there is no real method or formula for doing it that will make it fair and there never will be. If Chuck beats Rashad and Forrest somehow beats Rampage, then sure, give the title shot to Chuck, then if Chuck wins the title again, let Wnaderlei, Machida, Thiago or whoever the helly ou people think DESERVES a title shot, fight Chuck. Lets face it, if Chuck beats Rashad and Rampage beats Forrest and they fight for the 3rd time, Chuck will lose and retire, or move up to HW bet you money on it.

Okay…..Chuck/Rampage III is NOT at all warranted “unless” Chuck demolishes Rashad and then another bout against say Thiago or SHogun. SHogun is the guy Chuck should really aim for, then He could say he beat Wandy (pretty damn decisively for all the fools out there…Wandy was never pressing forward and usually being pressed against the octagon)he beat Shogun and Evans. SHogun is most likely “over hyped” ala CroCop…until we see otherwise. Evans couldn’t take out Bispin!? Chuck should maybe look to rematch Jardine to prove Jardine was a Matt Serra.
Rampage is not unbeatable, love the guy, but Forrest…not saying he will, wouldn’t bet on it, but Forrest could very well out last Rampage in the stamina department and submit him.

chuck liddell- 21-5 (W) 13tko-1sub-7dec

20 UFC fights, 3 PRIDE fights,3 other

notable wins-wandy, titox2, randyx2,babalux2, jeremy horn,alistair overeem,vitor belfort,guy metzger,kevin randleman,jeff monson

lyoto machida- 13-0 (w) 3tko-2sub-8dec
                     (L) 0
5 UFC fights, 8 other

notable wins-tito,sokoudjou,nakamura,b.j. penn (LW), rich franklin (MW), stephan bonnar

Thiago Silva- 13-0 (W) 10 tko-2sub-1dec
                    (L) 0
4 UFC fights, 9 other

notable wins-alexander, irvin

had to post this for the uneducated fan boys. machida is impressive, if he got the title shot i wouldn’t mind. but i think a case can be made for him or chuck. as far as silva is concerned, he isn’t even on my title radar yet. he has looked good though. one thing i did notice is that with exactly half the fights as chuck, machida has one more decision victory on his record.

ok this is all set up by Dana White, there is no question about who will get the next title shot… Chuck shouldn’t even be fighting Rashad Evans, Tito should’ve had his rematch with Evans but Dana had to make sure that Tito fought Lyoto cause he knew that Lyoto would be running and he was scared that Lyoto was gonna run away from Chuck if they fought… Lyoto should fight on the untelevised part of the cards cause that guy is not worth watching

look at the upside, i can sleep at night knowing that rashad will no longer have that sham of an undefeated record. nighty-night evans, wake up with a loss on the record

this is the way i see it. Evans, although is good on paper, hasnt finished but like 2 fights. Lyoto is a decent fighter. In a classic 3 round fight where running away was illegal Lyoto would do just fine, but not these days. Everyone wants to see a knock out. Like it or not, that’s the way it is. And its not just the UFC, its everywhere. Chuck going against Evans again is BS. It was going to be Anderson Silva’s 205 debut against Chuck, but Evans cried like a little girl saying he deserved it more, b/c Chuck got injurded when they were supposed to fight before. I think there is just too much talent at the top of the 205 ranks for us to say “this person deserves it more.” I think we all agree that Evans DOESN’T, but there are others that do. I think the UFC would be stupid to put together a Chuck/Rampage 3..but i DONT think that it would be a bad move to have a chuck/griffen for the belt. keeping in mind the slim chances that Forest has of winning the belt.

NOTE TO UFC, you can make MUCH more money putting together big names WITHOUT rigging our title matches. just let the stats/fans speak for themselves!

If Chuck gets a shot over Thiago or Lyoto then i’m changing my allegance to another code….Maybe professional “Curling” where i’m sure the two best teams are given a legitimate chance to face off eaginst one another as due process. One hyphenated word UFC….BULLSHIT!!
