Cote is on a good streak but can’t believe he lost to lutter he just had to get lutter past the 1st round and he would have gassed.

Almeida’s ju jitsu is absoutely beautiful! Cote seemed to be putting it al together recently. It will be an interesting fight of the classic Grappler vs. Striker match up! I really llike Almeida. I think he will get Cote t t he ground and make quick work of Cote. There arent too many people in the world that can hang with the Big Dog on the ground and Cote is not 1 of them. Almieda via 1st round choke!
Question: What middleweight has the best Jits game:
Almeida?
Maia?
Palhares?
Anyone know if these guys ever grappled against each other in abu dahbi or anything?
by John on Jun 26, 2008 9:50 AM EDT up reply actions
i will get back to you on that! i think almeida has the highest bjj rank but thats because of teaching bjj! so i dunno il check it up now

i dont think they have competed but i do know you left out thales leites! he also has great jujitsu! they dont seem to have competed against each other in abu dhabi! maia won in 2007 the others havent won in so far as i know!
you also left out dean lister! he won an adcc aswell
all of those guys have great jujitsu! i have to say the middleweight division is by far the best for grapplers!
almeida seems to have the longest adcc career and competes well above his weight in adcc and in open weight! i dont know who to pick! guess we’l have to wait and see if they fight each other in the ufc
by the heat on Jun 26, 2008 11:07 AM EDT up reply actions
oh but almeida beat dean lister in adcc before
by the heat on Jun 26, 2008 11:08 AM EDT up reply actions
I cant believe I left out thales, I am only his biggest American Fan! He should definitely be up there!
I left out lister because I think he is trash as an mma fighter. He is better than I gi8ve him, credit for, but I am biased against him after I sat through Sooooooo many BORING fights that involved him!
It is a good question with no clear cut answer. I hope to see some of these guys face off in the UFC as well!
Only 1 way to find out!
As an mma fighter, I would say THales and Almeida are the most ready to make an impact, but dont sleep on Rusimar and Maia, they are bad dudes as well!

The best pure grappling match possible (imo) would be BJ Penn vs. Shinya Aoki!
by john on Jun 26, 2008 2:20 PM EDT up reply actions
ye that would be sick! i think aoki is even better than bj but at mma bj takes it hes bigger and has better striking! aoki is still sick though! through though ye lister is boring altogether! leites was in a dodgey fight there with marquardt! i think if marquardt didnt knee him in the head on the ground leites would have been able to perform better! over all of em id say leites has the best striking but his takedowns are not great and in mma the gaurd is less effect than in pure grappling(because of punches) almeida seems to have the better takedowns but has sub-par striking! i dont know bout the other two they are up and commers i suppose! like you say though only one way to find out

“I am going to have some bald spots after this fight”… Classic.
I am torn about this fight. But Cote has been a man on a mission lately. I think Almedia destroyed a can in his last fight and has not been tested since his break from MMA. I got to go with Cote by TKO.
by bnf on Jun 25, 2008 11:08 PM EDT reply actions
but don’t forget that almeida wasn’t doing nothing on his break from mma competition, he was teaching and practicing ju-jitsu everyday so i don’t think ring rust or anything like that is to much of an issue.
Almeida will win in rd 1.
by Macho Bullshit on Jun 26, 2008 6:51 AM EDT up reply actions
That’s a good point. Like I said I am torn about this fight. I like both guys, but no one seems to be giving Cote a chance. He has more cage experience lately and is coming in with a lot of confidence. If it goes to the ground its over. I just have a feeling Cote will end it before it gets there.
by BNF on Jun 26, 2008 10:46 AM EDT up reply actions
my goal is to watch almeida get knocked out by a crazy canadian beast not named GSP
by bradpittfightclub on Jun 25, 2008 11:12 PM EDT reply actions
I think Almeida will submit him. Cote has good hands but on the ground he’s not that great. He got submitted by Joe Doerkerson too. And Almeida’s bjj is on the same level as lutter. I’m calling a first round submission win for almeida.
by JP on Jun 25, 2008 11:12 PM EDT reply actions
Lutter is very good at jiujitsu, Almeida I’d say is slightly better and has better cardio, so I predict a similar result with an unlikely scenario of him being caught coming in for the shoot.
Other than that, I hope Cote has trained on how to tie him up in guard or some takedown defence, because he will need it.
by DirtyML on Jun 25, 2008 11:15 PM EDT reply actions
i really like Big Dog… he’s sick and very slick on the ground.. i even think that IF he wins and gets a shot at Anderson he does have the best chance out of everyone else in the division to submit him… lutter god knows couldn’t do it.. and nobody in that division could stand up with anderson so even if Cote wins he’ll get knocked out by Silva… so the only person that gives anderson any trouble would be Almeida.
by Ricky on Jun 26, 2008 12:25 AM EDT reply actions
I don’t know if he would get KOed by Silva. He hasn’t even been rocked, let alone KOed. He has a chin of granite. Mcfedries hits HARD and Cote didn’t even flinch when he got hit. This would be a good time for Silva to take the fight to the ground, because taking 1 shot from Cote, could be 1 shot to many.
by Gord on Jun 27, 2008 2:06 AM EDT up reply actions
I have Almeida picked to sub him. He’s better than Lutter on the ground, and has the wrestling necessary to take Cote down. Cote hits hard, though, and if he works on his td defense can make it one hell of a fight.
MW sure does have some good submission artists these days. They need to match Almeida, Maia, and Lister vs each other.
by yohnstoppable on Jun 26, 2008 1:13 AM EDT reply actions
I dont know if he’s better than lutter on the ground, but he’s definately as good and in WAY better shape. The problem with Lutter is that he’s a BJJ beast. He’s one of those BJJ guys that loses his game as soon as he gets hit. Thats why he couldnt make it as a champion. Almeida remains to be seen, but I definately pick him to submit Cote in or before the second round.

So many mma fighters are f*cking stupid. GSP is probably the only one out there that DOESNT tell everyone in the world his game plan…..These fighters get on tv and explain step by step what they are going to do……
by Ryan on Jun 26, 2008 8:05 AM EDT reply actions
Why is it stupid? It is confidence in themselves and their skills. As if to say, “Here is what I am gonna do. See if you can stop me.” What’s stupid is to think Cote didn’t already know Almeida is gonna try to win this fight on the ground.
by PJJ on Jun 26, 2008 10:09 AM EDT up reply actions
Is it not obvious what GSP is gonna do? He hasnt stood and traded since he got KTFO’d by Serra. He’s gonna shoot in for the takedown and GNP or submit the guy. Everyone knows everyone elses game plan, whether they talk about it or not.
by --utaptout-- on Jun 26, 2008 5:14 PM EDT up reply actions
See how good GSP is at suckering in people to think he is going to do one thing and then he does another. The next GSP opponent that thinks like you, will be the one laying on the mat KTFO. Randy is another expert at this, just ask Tim Sylvia. After that fight, Tim didn’t sound like he new what Randy’s game plan was.
by Gord on Jul 6, 2008 3:52 AM EDT up reply actions
Cote seems to be channeling his energy in the right direction and is more calm and focused since his loss to Lutter. I don’t think he stands a chance against Silva but who does…. Cote by TKO (ref stoppage) 2nd RD.

Almeida by triple decka pecka wrecka. There is no getting out of that.

Come on now, everybody knows the huckleberry handshake is the counter to that.

Best fight of the undercard which isn’t saying alot about UFC 86… is it July 19th yet?
by Robert on Jun 26, 2008 8:25 AM EDT reply actions
I think the big dog will take this by tap out in the first.
I have a question for you guys regarding his last bout. When Almeida superbly locked the arm-in-guillotine on Rob Yundt at UFC 81, Yundt tried to throw him off. It seemed like a pretty dodgy move to me as Ricardo could have been spiked right onto his head and neck. Is this not illegal? Any thoughts?
by Strach on Jun 26, 2008 8:49 AM EDT reply actions
Its perfectly legal. Theres no rule against it at all. You’ll notice that Almeida tucked his head down to his shoulder and rolled more over his opposite shoulder than his head and neck. Thats a textbook technique used in BJJ. The same concept is used if someone tries to roll a BJJ guy over his back when he puts on a triangle choke. I wish I had known that when I first started training BJJ. I wouldnt have gotten this damn herniated disc.
by --utaptout-- on Jun 26, 2008 5:19 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, Cote has no ground game still… Almeida will chew him up and spit him out on the ground.

You guys may find this crazy. if true…but I heard thru the MMA grape vine.. that “Dana White is partners with Affliction”. Sounds crazy..that’s just what I heard.
by PhilQNY on Jun 26, 2008 9:12 AM EDT reply actions
If its not true yet, I could see it happening. Theyre actually giving out legit fights, unlike EliteXC, and Dana would love to buy his competition
by --utaptout-- on Jun 26, 2008 5:21 PM EDT up reply actions
These striker vs grappler matches are classic and entertaining, but I personally would have preferred to see Almeida fight another one of the sick BJJ practitioners at 185. Guys like Rousimar Palhares (now scheduled to fight Hendo), Damien Maia or even Thales Leites would have been better match ups in my opinion.
Like I said the striker vs grappler matches are always interesting, but wouldn’t we rather weed out the grapplers to see who is the best BJJ expert in the division? We all know the strikers in the division will all get dominated by Silva, but we have yet to see him face a grappler better than Travis Lutter, which there are now several of in the division.
by Ballam on Jun 26, 2008 9:29 AM EDT reply actions
I agree, I posted something very similar to this above!
PhilQny: Is what u posted even possible? Thats interesting, and strange! Tell me more!
by john on Jun 26, 2008 11:28 AM EDT up reply actions
I was on the mat yesterday..with my coach..before bjj class..we’re all bs’ing..and he had mentioned to me that..all low. That he has across some info which has UFC PRez as a i think a " slient partner in Affliction MMA "..we didn’t go deep into this topic..but he said in some way that it may come out later down the line. So it’s hear say. If it’s true..wow. I would of never thought.
Hey John. if you have a myspace account..chk out my page. search " PhilQNY " that’s my display name.

Cote needs to play it safe here, create distance and avoid the takedown like the plague.

Almeida just seems like a ridiculously nice, humble guy, ive always enjoyed his fights even back to the pride days when he beat guys like misaki, chonan, and when he beat marquardt. Hes really just a hard guy not to root for. I dont dislike Cote, but i will be pulling for Almeida.

Almeida all the way. His bjj is outstanding & he as a fighter is a pleasure to watch. Almeida via rd 1 sub.
