MMA Quick Quote: Fans calling for a UFC 5 rematch?

The second time I beat him in every aspect of the fight; in fact his corner had to carry him out. Fans have been calling for a rematch ever since. After this particular fight Royce left the UFC. As a matter of fact I ran the entire Gracie family out of the UFC. His talk is cheap. Let’s settle it in the cage. I heard Royce agree to a rematch three times now, every time he has come up with a reason not to fight me. Royce and my brother Frank should get together and write a book about how to set up fights and not fight.

-- UFC Hall of Famer Ken Shamrock fires back at Royce Gracie who dismissed the aging star as irrelevant in today's fight game in a recent interview with MMAyou.com. Shammy last competed at Cage Rage 25 where he was knocked out by Robert "Buzz" Berry and is just 2-8 in his last 10 fights.

If ever there was someone that should retire. I guess I would see this fight if I had nothing to do.

Ken needs to go back to the WWE and continue his nonsense there. I am calling for him to leave us alone.

by thetuf75 on Jun 25, 2008 1:03 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah nice one frank, heavyweight now and your calling royce out who is a welterweight. Times have changed obviously frank shamrock hasn’t. And for any of you who put Royce in the same league as shaun sherk, take a long look at yourself in the mirror wat are you thinking!!! Look at Royce does it look like he is taking performance enhancing drugs, the man is a rake! maybe its me tho cant hear a bad word said about royce, his family started all of this

by T_Dog on Jun 25, 2008 4:15 PM EDT up reply actions

I have seen a few family memebers talk about Royce, and not all of them had nice things to say. I can’t remember which one it was (how many are there anyway?), but one even said the family was disgraced by his cheating, and it was not what they stood for.

by naturalshadow on Jun 25, 2008 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Did you just call him “Frank”?

Didn’t royce get busted for testing positive for perfomance enhancers? I’m pretty sure he did, I guess he does have a few similarities with sherk.I’m a gracie family fan but when I read your comment I couldn’t help myself but to respond.

Ken needs to retire, but he does have a point about all the B.S about Frank and Royce (2 of the biggest Klowns in the sport)!

by john on Jun 25, 2008 1:42 PM EDT up reply actions

Hey John, by Klowns, you are meaning Ken and Frank right? Because they are the only ones I ever see continually putting themselves in the spotlight. They should write a book about “how to remain the center of attention, even when your career is finished”. haha

by grembone on Jun 25, 2008 1:53 PM EDT up reply actions

AND ROYCE!!! Hew is just as bad, always asking for special rules and special weight classes! F OFF Royce!

Disgracing his family by using Roids at age 40!

Dont get me started on Rickson!

Only Gracie’s that I really like are Renzo and Ricardo Almeida!

by john on Jun 25, 2008 2:07 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah, I don’t consider royce a klown, he’s the reason I got into MMA, to me he’s a legend (even though he does talk too much and sometimes he goes over his head). Still, I wouldn’t mind seeing them two going one more time, they’re in the same age group and it wouldn’t be a mismatch.

by linx on Jun 25, 2008 2:09 PM EDT up reply actions

Royce is a klown, for anyone who hated on Sherk you best be hatin’ on Royce as well.

by Bic on Jun 25, 2008 2:51 PM EDT up reply actions

so is sherk a klown?

by linx on Jun 25, 2008 3:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Linx: Of Course Royce got me into the sport as well, but he was NOT an mma fighter. He was a gracie Ju jitsu fighter back when the UFC was a kumite style tournament 1 style vs. a different style. Fighters were not really cross training back then.

Of course the UFC is the house that Royce Built (so much love to him for that), but since then, I have really started to dislike Royce. All the crying about needing special rules, special weight classes, no referee’s…I had enough. Then the roids was even worse!

Rickson pisses me off because he is such a legend, and I always wanted to se ehim fight Sakuraba but he never did!

Royler, I NEVER liked! I always thought he was a pussy, especially after Sakuraba drug him all over the pride ring by his ankles and literally kicked his ass~

I am a big fan of Renzo, and as a fighter, I adore Almeida!

by john on Jun 25, 2008 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t think Royce is a klown nor Sherk. Ya they did some stupid things. Royce especially, but they are both respected by me. Royce in his day… no comparison. Definitely not a klown.

by grembone on Jun 25, 2008 3:23 PM EDT up reply actions

Come on John, Rickson hasn’t fought ever since his son died. I don’t think he’d use his son’s death as an excuse to duck Saku, I really don’t think he wanted to fight anymore after that.

As for Royce, I am aware about the drug use, but the legend that was still surpasses the image he left when that happened. The thing about special rules is not as bad, crocop also wanted special rules to fight wandy the first time around, I didn’t think anything less of him and I won’t think anything less of Royce. Royler I can care less, to me it’s not the family name that is at issue, but the individuals themselves (and Saku is a beast and he’s another legend). Still, Royce got me to watch MMA (back when it was vale tudo), he’s my hero still, I can’t diss the man for what he has done, I can only acknowledge what he has accomplished. But if you don’t like him it’s all good, I just had to make my opinion to back up someone I respect :)

by linx on Jun 25, 2008 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions

I cant disagree with your post because I admire him and appreciate him for putting the UFC on the map. But the special rules pissed me off! I didnt like it when cro cop asked for them, but Royce is MUCH worse. It was a PRIDE fight, still mma. He is supposed to be THE ALPHA mma fighter, what the hell does he need special rules for in mma. At least cro cop had an excuse, he was a kickboxer new to mma. Royce is mma, what the hell did he need special rules for?

My beef with Rickson, is because as a fan, I always salivated over the idea of seeing him fight on the big stage, but that opportunity never came. I understand his reason’s and I do not fault him for that. cant say anything bad about him, I just simply wanted to see him fight in PRIDE.

No matter what I say about Royce, there is no denying that the good really overshadows the bad. I DO respect the man for what he has done for the sport. He just cries a little too much for my taste. But hey, like you, the guy got me into the sport so the RESPECT is there!

by john on Jun 25, 2008 5:34 PM EDT up reply actions

Jesus, maybe the UFC should start up a seniors tour so all the old wash-ups can fight father time just a little bit longer. I guess Ken’s getting a little bored playing Gin with all the other old folks.

Ken, just shut the f*ck up and retire already! For good this time! You had your day!

by JRK on Jun 25, 2008 12:57 PM EDT reply actions

That’s not entirely a bad idea. They could have seniors fight nights. Dan Severn, Tank Abbott, Gracie, etc.

Was the second armbar lucky too?

Any books I can buy to perform such an unathletic move?

OJR: Ha, yea sure, I can’t say anything about it other than I was wrong about Amir. I have no excuse for CB, he really dissapointed me in that fight. But I still disagree that an armbar is all that athletic/difficult of a manuever, especially at a professional level, if you can’t even pull off an armbar then you shouldn’t be trying to take a fight to the ground.

P.S. “Just curious since you didn’t man up and post when the winners were posted in the other thread” I don’t have a pc that will load this site on the weekends, and by the time monday rolls around at work I don’t back track to find previous posts. If they fought each other, it would probably be an ok to good fight. Speed and skill they don’t have anymore against younger guys…but vs each other could be a hell of a fight…I would take Gracie…but I still think it Ken could make a good fight out of it…the battle of the incoherents

by BFD on Jun 25, 2008 1:16 PM EDT up reply actions

funny how just two years ago both royce and ken were doing PPV main events in the UFC. this just goes to show how some ppl are bias towards the UFC. I for one wouldn’t mind them going at it again though, but that’s just me.

the second time they fought all ken did was lay and pray the only big thing he did in that fight was hit royce with a big shot near the end

by jimmy v on Jun 25, 2008 1:04 PM EDT reply actions

Ken is just responding to a comment Royce made. I see no problem in what he said.

I have a ton of respect for Ken for what he has done in this sport and I do think it is time for him to hang up the gloves but I would not complain about being able to see this fight!

by StayDown on Jun 25, 2008 1:04 PM EDT reply actions

I agree. Nothing wrong about firing back comments, when they’ve made about you, in my eyes.

I also got a ton of respect for Ken(and Royce) and while I don’t think either one can really hang anymore with the new crop of fighters, against each other, it could be a decent match if nothing else.

If the fight does happen, I hope it’s in the UFC. A feud between two pioneers of the original UFC…no where else would the fight be more appropriate.

by Jase on Jun 25, 2008 1:26 PM EDT up reply actions

I agree, and that also reminds me of a question I had, is royce a UFC hall of famer? Mania’s piece mentions ken as one but royce wasn’t mentioned as one, to me it would be terrible for royce not to be in the hall of fame.

by linx on Jun 25, 2008 2:21 PM EDT up reply actions

by linx on Jun 25, 2008 3:11 PM EDT up reply actions

by --utaptout-- on Jun 25, 2008 4:54 PM EDT up reply actions

poor ken. he must be broke.

by kama kaze on Jun 25, 2008 1:07 PM EDT reply actions

Of course he is, fighters are underpaid as I’ve stated in numerous threads :)

People don’t tend to think so though.

If a fighter dedicates his life to a short career as an MMA fighter then they should earn enough so they can retire at 40 comfortably.

Poor Ken obviously has to fight but wounds stop healing after a certain age lol

by Automation on Jun 25, 2008 5:50 PM EDT up reply actions

…Or they should choose a career that they can perform for a long-term earning opportunity. They know the risks involved in fighting and know they won’t be doing it for that long. It is their choice to fight as a career for however long, it is there choice what to do with their money. Invest wisely, open a gym that will allow them to use their name, etc. They are paid appropriately by what the business increasingly allows.

by PJJ on Jun 25, 2008 6:23 PM EDT up reply actions

So, if they do what you suggest and choose a career with long-term earning opportunity, we would have no fighters.

Your argument is stupid.

The other thing you suggest is invest wisely, open a gym.

Do you know how much it costs to open a gym and how much you need to invest in a short time for it to look after you for the rest of your non-working years?

Once a fighter takes off his management fees, cost of living, tax etc it doesn’t leave them with much to do either unless their name is Chuck, Wandy, Hendo, Franklin etc etc.

Shamrock was at his peak when the UFC was in it’s infancy and his earnings would have reflected this

by Automation on Jun 26, 2008 8:14 AM EDT up reply actions

God I wish Ken would just drop off the face of the earth. Royce is right. Ken IS irrelevant to MMA today. 2-8 in his last ten? Time to disappear. I hope Royce armbars him until his elbow snaps and he is forced to retire. We’re so used to seeing Ken just get pounded on, so maybe if someone does some permanent damage…

by --utaptout-- on Jun 25, 2008 1:22 PM EDT reply actions

To put this in perspective, Tank Abbott is 3-8 in his last 11 fights.

by Pat on Jun 25, 2008 1:44 PM EDT up reply actions

LMAO…Tank vs. Shamrock!!! Itll probably be a draw because neither of them could possibly win a fight at this point!

by --utaptout-- on Jun 25, 2008 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions

This would actually be an interesting fight. just about the only interesting fight left for ken, and only because Royce doesn’t have the striking power to KO ken (not that it takes much these days, but still…)

i’d like to see this fight at some point. i probably wouldn’t pay for it though

by Fidel Cashflow on Jun 25, 2008 1:28 PM EDT reply actions

by Ro on Jun 25, 2008 1:44 PM EDT reply actions

The only way I would watch Royce fight Ken is if he fought in the GI.. I was rooting for Royce in 2006 to beat Matt Hughes..but when he entered the octagon in his fight shorts.. I was so disapointed..and new it was going to be a short and painful night for Royce. Stick with the GI man.

by PhilQNY on Jun 25, 2008 1:48 PM EDT reply actions

the ufc does not allow fighters to compete wearing gi’s.

u can only wear shorts or those speedo things.

no gi’s.

i think Royce ( El hall of Famer ) may qualify for an exception to the rule. I think Ken and Royce or done with real MMA competing..but if they were " ever " to fight again..in whatever promotion..let Royce wearthe gi..it suits him..All the best Royce highlights..he had his gi. When saw him in the octagon in his shorts getting ready to scrap with MAtt…..I kind of felt bad for him.

by PhilQNY on Jun 25, 2008 2:17 PM EDT up reply actions

There are no exceptions to the rule though, even if you are an MMA Legend, otherwise it’s an unsanctioned match, which the UFC can’t put on. At least, that’s my understanding of how it works.

by mrfancypants on Jun 25, 2008 1:59 PM EDT reply actions

Correct me if I’m wrong. I was just looking Royce’s record and the second fight with Ken was a f**ing draw. Ken, at his prime (God, 13 years ago), couldn’t beat a guy 40 pounds lighter with no punching power. This guy is a joke. I have very little respect for this guy only because he is one of the pioneers. He was a real name in Pankration and he should have stayed there

by Cristiano from Brazil on Jun 25, 2008 2:01 PM EDT reply actions

This was possibly the worst fight in UFC history. 36 minutes of Ken in Royce’s gaurd and nothing else. It blew. A fight now would be more interesting with rounds, judges and stand ups.

by DonnyG on Jun 25, 2008 3:07 PM EDT up reply actions

All Ken is good for now is a punchin bag…granted hed probably still kick my ass but in mma hes gettin his ass kicked all over the place, he needs to shut his mouth cause he just looks like an idiot after talkin so much shit then losing every time

by Krav138 on Jun 25, 2008 2:37 PM EDT reply actions

Sorry but, Ken Shamrock is the biggest loser in MMA.
UFC 1 Royce chockes him, he taps, Royce lets go, the stupid ref doesnt see and loser Ken is tries to continue as if he didn’t tap. Pathetic. Then on their second fight, Ken is like 50lbs heavier (roids) and fighting a skinny little Royce and hides inside Royces guard the whole time. Ok, as big as he was, he should have passed….No No, he was afraid to. Now he’s talking shit. haha

He showed the world how much more of a looser he was as a coach on the Ultimate fighter. He needs to retire and go away.

by Socalbike on Jun 25, 2008 3:13 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah Lets bring old the oldies…. Ken Vs. Royce. Severn Vs. Frye lets be honest that fight with ken and royce would never happen there would have to be a catch weight and with kens brain being squash does anyone want to see him in a air or blood choke and scramble the little bit of brains he’s has left I’m calling it now Ken Shamrock first MMA fighter to develop Muhammed Ali syndrome but honestly this doesn’t warrant a main event well not on ppv anyhow this would be a good fight night match up. Maybe W.E.C or something like that.
At this point in his career Kalib Starnes could wear down Shammy I’m sure he can’t run but so long HA HA HA HANG IT UP OLD MAN!

by TapSnapOrNapBJJ on Jun 25, 2008 3:34 PM EDT reply actions

if the ufc could get gracie, let ken finish that last fight he was supposed to have( if he could get away from current promotion), have coleman fight, bring back severn, at nearly 50 hes still going strong, could call it ufc 90 cardiac arrest!

I need a little help here. Who did Ken fight in Pride where he verbally tapped due to gassing out? He was winning the fight, but his opponent (large, no neck Japanese fighter) just kept coming. They were tied up on the ropes and Ken signaled he wanted to stop. I was completely stunned.

by chefdaddy on Jun 25, 2008 11:07 PM EDT reply actions

I think you are thinking of the Fujita fight at Pride 10. He did not really tap…he told his corner he could not continue and the fight was stopped.

by StayDown on Jun 26, 2008 9:52 AM EDT up reply actions

It’s gotten sad. Ken’s chin is weak. I wouldn’t be surprised if Royce knocks him out. You heard me right.

by Perkins on Jun 25, 2008 11:31 PM EDT reply actions

We all know everyone of you would watch this fight of royce and ken. you would also watch a ken vs. frank shammy fight. they are interesting fights that Ken would lose in the first round. They both would be huge money makers if made as a co-feature. UFC has one more fight they owe ken shamrock, why not get him in along with another hall of famer. Someone is defiantly going to put this fight on, I bet you. I’d see Ken vs. Kimbo, that would make a lot of money. I really wouldn’t pay to see these fights though. Showtime, Spike, CBS, HD fight net, anyone of these would play the fight for free!

by city-boxing-newcomer on Jun 26, 2008 12:03 PM EDT reply actions

What? Does he realize that he’s never beaten Royce?

by xxbaxx816 on Jun 26, 2008 9:51 PM EDT reply actions

Ken shamrock vs Royce Gracie 3 should be on a UFC Fight Night and it should either be a main event match or the match right before the main event. Elite XC, UFC, Affliction they all know that fight would be huge and their ratings for that event would be high. I think they should do it and then they both should retire after that fight.
