UFC Quick Quote: Heath Herring trains with Randy Couture for Brock Lesnar UFC 87 fight

"I've been down at Randy's a lot. Actually, Randy's really helped me out so far. I really have got to give him a lot of credit for helping me out and kind of helping me with takedown defense and things like that."
-- Heath Herring talks about the preparation for his upcoming fight against Brock Lesnar at UFC 87: "Seek and Destroy" with MMAWeekly.com. "The Texas Crazy Horse" was taken down at will in a loss to Jake O'Brien in his Octagon debut and striker Cheick Kongo implemented the same game plan against Herring (although it didn't work). Lesnar is a collegiate wrestling champion and has tremendous skills and speed -- he'll likely be looking to put Herring on his back and pound him out. It should be interesting to see if "The Natural" can impart any Greco-Roman wisdom that keeps Herring upright.

I dont think any amount of takedown defense preparation will stop the beast that is Brock from taking Herring down.

i agree.
lesnar will not lose this fight.
herring is a great fighter and he is more of a threat then mir was
but i dont think lesnar will be a crazy and way to pumped this time.
when lesnar fought mir. i knew mir was going to win.
so sure i bet 25,000 on mir.
this time i will be betting on lesnar. the man is not going to be all frantic this time.
he will be composed and use his size to take down and pound the ever loving shit out of herring.

To ~Sticky~Fingers and JV
Hearring went toe to toe with Nog who trains boxing all the time. I will say it a thousand times… 30yr olds cannot learn the skills needed to compete in upper level MMA. That’s why Kimbo will never make it as well.If Brock was 25yrs old then maybe but the fluent biomechanics of learning submissions and throwing punches and kicks only come through years and years of practice at a young age or at the lastest mid 20’s. Just ask Matt Hughes how his stand up is coming along? Sure he started training boxing of late but it really is too late. I have my house on Herring but anything can happen in MMA. I would reconsider your bet but that is your call…. There can only be one Randy Couture!

i know herring can win.
i just dont see it.
trust me i am a huge fan of heath its just a bad matchup. and bad timing.
i am not going to bet as much as i did on mir but i will be betting agianst heath.

Thank God there is only one Randy Couture. lol. I understand your arguement, but I think this will be one of those fights where Brock’s power and aggressiveness will simply overwhelm Herring. I know MMA has shown time and time again that size and strength can be beaten with high levels of skill. But I don’t think Herring has that high level of skill needed to counter a hard training, genetic freak like Lesnar.

I completely disagree with you Robert. It’s hard to teach an old dog new tricks, yes. But in regards to the fighting game, Brock is a young dog. He hasn’t developed bad habits, or any habits over the years from fighting because he’s never done it. Matt Hughes won 30 plus fights relying on ground and pound before he even had to think about improving his striking. Same with Kimbo, obviously he’s been fighting for years and has developed bad habits. When you’re used to doing something one way for so many years, it’s hard to break the bad habits hence the expression “it’s hard to teach an old dog new tricks”.
Go back and watch some of Herrings old fights. He’s always struggled with dominant wrestlers, although he pulled out some good wins against them, none were the genetic freak that Lesnar is. If anything this takedown defense training is all in vain, once again because of that same expression. Lesnar will win in dominating fashion.

In general Robert I would agree that for most starting at 30 is a bit too late but in Brock’s case I believe he can compete at the highest level. However this one is so finally balanced I see it as more or less 50-50. I can see the arguments for both sides but I’m going to sit soundly on the fence and just enjoy this one.

I appreciate all of your comments very informative analysis thanks alot. I ‘m glad to be part of a forum where there seems to be down to earth, level headed guys who are respectful towards one another and who simply love MMA… but you guys are so wrong…. crazy horse wins by experience… brock has never even been punched in the face before…. I’m right…big time!!!!!! Just Kidding. Believe it or not I think this is going to be the best fight of the card.

I think it will be a very interesting fight! Both Hearing and Brock are doing exactly what they need to do to maximize their chances for success in this fight. Lesnar is training with a Ju jitsu GOD, and Hearing is working with one of the best wrestlers in mma history.
I expect to see 2 heavyweights on top of their games, go to WAR. The stand up portion of the fight should be very interesting. Although his striking is not that Fluid, Brock hits like a Tank! He dropped Mir with that lazy right cross. Will Hearing be able to deal with the power? I am not sure. To early to make an analysis on this fight. Check back with me in early August!

Affliction News:
fightline:
As we reported yesterday, Affliction, after putting together a stellar inaugural card, is already hard at work on a second event. Now word on a third event and dates are trickling out. Our good friends over at MMAWeekly Radio recently spoke to Affliction VP Tom Atencio.
"Right now we’re looking at three shows," said Atencio. "We’re looking at July 19 at the Honda Center, then we’ve got end of October, possibly November for the second show, then the third show will be February."
Atencio was a little more vague with regard locations of the upcoming events.
"Right now we’re looking at a couple different places," said Atencio. “One outside of the west coast, one on the west coast and then the third is possibly on the east coast, so if we can get over there.”
If Affliction holds a show in the tri state area, there will be nothing to keep me from attending.

Lesnar looks like he can’t stand up, his stance looks Ugly, But I dout he will be going for that. Herring will get Demolished GnP.
by Chase on Jun 25, 2008 1:18 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
While herring is still not too impressive, I feel he has turned the page in his last two fights. He looks better, physically, his conditioning has been good, and while he still has little to no ground game(see cheik kongo fight) he in my opinion has a very good chance of pulling it off. Brock has only been in the sport of mma for a little over 2 years and while he is physical beast, and his GnP is sick he hasn’t really proven to be anyone. He got beat by a washed up Frank Mir,lets face it folks regardless of what Dana says, he was looking at Mir as a Can and figuring Brock for the easy win. no one knows what his conditioning is past 2 and a half minutes, he can’t defend the submission, and his stand up is questionable. I feel as though Herring will not only win this fight but in a horribly weak division he may get thrown into the title picture and no longer be looked as a gatekeeper fighter.
by butterteeth on Jun 25, 2008 1:35 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
You consider a 29-year-old former champion and current No. 1 contender (in an admittedly weak division) washed up? DW put that fight together because Brock asked to fight the best, not pad his record with horribly overmatched chumps. Frank Mir is one of the three best HW BJJ and submission specialists in the world. Anything less than that and Brock gets the win.

Herring is probably going to get man handled.
by alex on Jun 25, 2008 1:43 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Mir might have been washed up in comparison to his older self, but I still think that he was Brocks weakness. He was a specialist at what it quite possibly the only way to beat Brock Lesnar.

Na i’m rooting for Brock, the heavyweight division is crying out for a superstar, not saying its Brock but for sure its not Heath.
by Nick J on Jun 25, 2008 10:58 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Lesnar will take him down with ease and there is no way Heath will get out from the bottom, but he is a good striker, I think there is a slight percentage that he might win by Ko, otherwise it is all brock..
by shamo84 on Jun 25, 2008 6:18 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I don’t get why he would be training with Randy for Brock. Brock is a freestyle, Randy is greco, it’s apples and oranges.
Heath’s takedown defense has always sucked, so it’s good he’s improving it, but he’s definitely going about it the wrong way in my opinion.
And for anyone who seriously thinks it’s not a huge difference, go watch Couture vs Randleman, where Randleman easily takes Couture down repeatedly until gassing in the third in a typical Randleman fashion.
by Nouvelle on Jun 25, 2008 6:18 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I was kind of thinking the same thing. Randy never really used the shoot. It was more his style to use his greco roman experience; clinch and from there to get the takedown. Should talk to Chuck about how to sprawl.
by RobH86 on Jun 25, 2008 10:25 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yees, Brock really needs to win this fight for the UFC and for all the fans… if Brock loses this fight the UFC have done a terrible job because Brock has the potential to be great and a superstar but maybe they’re giving him too good opponents too early in his career..
by RoB on Jun 25, 2008 7:05 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
if you’re referring to the fact that one of the dumbest fighters in the sport is being set up to get creamed by a professional wrestler/gifted athlete, then you’re mistaken. this is the UFC and this is what they do to compete.
by clayton on Jun 25, 2008 9:05 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
im referring to the fact that they are putting Brock in a fight that Herring has a huge chance to win.. they should give Lesnar some easier fights with more inexperienced fighters to build him up and give him some time to work on his game
by RoB on Jun 25, 2008 9:29 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Should be a very good fight to watch, but if Kongo can take you down, Lesnar should have no problems.
by "Mr. NC-17" on Jun 25, 2008 9:00 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
herring might be a lot of things but he’s certainly not the brightest fighter in MMA.
by clayton on Jun 25, 2008 9:02 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Even though Herring has lost, he has been in there with some of the best in the world. He knows what it is like to get punched in the face or to take a knee to the ribs. I will have to judge Lesner after this fight. How can he take a knee or a solid punch to the jaw. I am going with Herring for this, because I do not know how well Lesner is going to deal with getting hit. He has never had that before, so until I see proof of his ability in this area, to me he is just an excellent heavyweight superstar wrestler rather than an excellent mma heavyweight.

Brock will do wha he does…take him down and try to ground and pound him. I bet he succeeds, but not in a flash. He’ll have to wear Heath down first. As far as Mir goes, he is a more technically gifted fighter than Herring. Thats why he beat Brock with that knee bar. I just don’t see any way Herring wins this fight. Unless of course Brock is stupid enough to stand and bang with him. Herring hits VERY hard. I predict Brock by either late stoppage or decision.
