Sean Sherk: 'Ill get another [title] shot with another win or two'

Props: WrestlingObserver.com
Quoteworthy:
"I’m assuming they’re gonna maybe try to get me back in the title mix again right away, so they’ll maybe throw me a contender of some sort, and then try to get another shot at that belt real soon. I’m not real sure what B.J.’s plans are, but I think he wants to go back up to [1]70, and if that’s the case, it’s gonna vacate the belt, and hopefully I’ll get a shot at it soon. I think I’ll get another shot at with another win or two, probably."
Former UFC lightweight champion Sean Sherk still has his sights set on reclaiming the 155-pound title sometime soon. He missed the opportunity at UFC 84: "Ill Will," losing to reigning division kingpin BJ Penn via third round technical knockout. "The Muscle Shark" will likely return in August when the promotion hits his native Minnesota with UFC 87: "Seek and Destroy." There's no word on a possible opponent but it sounds as if it could be someone near the top of the division. Any suggestions?

God I hope Sherk doesnt get a title hsot anytime soon! Who really wants to see a boring champion who defends his title once a year.
Sherk knows he will never hold the title as long as BJ is around, so he is making plans to capture the vacant title…..What a chump!
I would like too see Sherk vs. Tyson Griffin, neither can finish a fight, so lets find out who the supperior dry humper is. I dont mean to hate3 on Tyosn, Although he cant finish a fight to save his life, his matches are usually entertaining.

I’m sorry man but Sherk has legit plans. Penn hardly wants to stay around in the LW division which fires me up a bit as well. Sherk is a straight competitor and you know he’d face Penn again. I’d also like to state that he doesn’t have the most exciting fighting style but his fights are exciting. He fights to the other guys pace and beats them that way so yeah he’s a bit of a dry humper but he takes a beating to win. I also think there is a chance Sherk could beat BJ as well, he had a strong game plan and stuck to it even in the end when he should have switched it up. He tried standing with Penn to tire him out when in the third he should have started shooting. He even looked safe until the very end of the round. I really just want to see a champion who deserves his belt, and if BJ doesn’t want to stick around at LW to clean out the division I don’t see why Sherk shouldn’t. He’d definetly clean the LW division out pretty good. And if you think BJ is good enough to beat down GSP then LW wouldn’t even be considered a challenge for Penn so there would be no point in him staying at that weight unless he wanted to hold two belts at once which would mean he would be holding up one belt for a good amount of time while he defended the other. The points are a little backward right?

Sorry, but I dont think Sherk could ever defeat BJ Penn. I just dont think that he is capable of it. BJ Penn made Sherk look like Caol Uno!
I would like to see Sherks wrestling nuetralized by gray maynard!

Since he is the only guy that I know that doesn’t have a fight right now or (at least don’t know about) and he beat a rising contender in Frankie Edgar what about Gray Maynard?
by The Legend on Jun 12, 2008 12:36 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
that would be a good fight, cause gray is one of my favs at 155. gray is a really good wrestler and so is sherk. gray uses his strength and size too “bully” around the person he’s fighting, and that will be hard to do against sherk. i think if he fought sherk it would be a hard fight for gray. and i think sherk has more experiance than gray, but gray has a good reach advantage. and we all know when 2 wrestlers fight they usually keep it standing. both have AWESOME cardio, so i would expect a fast and exciting fight!! if gray won, then he would shoot up in the 155 ranks.

clementi has been on a role as of late. it would be a good fight. clementi has ALOT of experiance. thats the great thing about the 155 division. there’s SOOO many talented fighters! guida vs sherk would be an awesome fight as well.

gray isn’t a “lay and prey” fighter. i agree sherk likes to fight like that, sometimes. sherk and florian had a pretty good fight. gray and frankie had an awesome fight. they were going 100 miles per hour the entire time and they fought at high elevation. who’s to say that gray and sherk wouldn’t have a good fight. the only lay and prey fighter i can’t stand to watch is lyoto, but i’m a mma fan so i’ll watch lyoto’s fights anyways. but i’m usually shouting at my tv screen the entire time! lol!

true that! fitch’s fight are really boring. i’m sure gsp will add some excitement to the fight. i’m pissed that fitch was able to tie royce gracie’s win streak. he won’t be able to get past gsp, but crazier things have happened before…

GSP is the only reason that fight will be exciting. It’s too bad that a big 6’0" strong wrestler is so boring. Crazy thing do happen (Serra/GSP-1) But hopefully GSP stays in the zone he’s in.

i questioned gsp’s mental strenght when he fought serra the second time, but he proved me wrong. yeah if gsp stays in the zone he’s in, not alot of people can touch him. if/when bj vs. gsp 2 happens, it will be a great fight.

No he didn’t, Sherk showed he knows how to loose ie by standing and trading.
Sherk made the wrong fight plan, BJ didn’t force him into it.
by Nick J on Jun 12, 2008 12:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You’re right Nick. I’m not sure what the hell Sherk was thinking by standing with Penn, but if he fights him again, he better freshen up his single leg takedowns.
by RealDrew on Jun 12, 2008 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think Sherk just respected BJ’s ground game so much that he didn’t want to go to the mat while BJ was still fresh. He made such a big deal about cardio that I think he wanted to tire BJ out on his feet before taking him down so he would be too tired to pull off textbook submissions. The plan back fired because Sherk thought his standup could hang with BJ’s and we all saw that it couldn’t.
He will be a very tough opponent for any lightweight not name BJ Penn and I know none of them are jumping around like "I"ll fight him! I’ll fight him, because losing will only push them deeper down the ladder and no one wants that.
Sucks to be a lightweight or a middleweight. Lightweight you got Penn with the Sherk gatekeeper. Middleweight you got Silva with a Franklin / Henderson gatekeeping combo. Wow!!!

I was actually impressed with the speed of Sherk’s hands, as well as his combo’s. Problem is he has those t-rex arms. I thought B.J. didn’t look as fast as Sherk did when they were exchanging, but it didn’t matter since Sherk had a very difficult time closing the distance, and B.J. could just sit back and jab. I think B.J. is the better fighter, but I still would have rather seen Sherk go for more takedowns and not try to prove his stand up in the most important fight of his career.
by naturalshadow on Jun 12, 2008 4:29 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’m nominating “Sherks T-Rex arms” as comment of the day!!! LMAO....×2!!!!!!
by JV on Jun 12, 2008 5:32 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
why do people keep saying that? Sherk COULDNT take BJ down. I wouldve loved to see a ground war between the two as well but Sherks takedowns just arent good enough to get him there. He was overmatched. Even GSP had a hard time getting BJ down, and GSP has the best TD’s in MMA, second to Koscheck.
by --utaptout-- on Jun 12, 2008 5:37 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t know if you have ever seen Sherk’s takedowns man. I’m not going to say this is where he got his nickname the muscle shark from but I believe it is. He looks like a shark jumping out of water when he does a body lock takedown. You can even check out the Hermes fight cause the takedowns there were impressive. Somebody already said it best that Sherk just respected BJ’s ground game too much to want to go for the takedown. Sherk is overly aggressive at that weight class and even more so than GSP or Kos. They have better style takedowns but Sherks are usually just dominating.
by Smokes on Jun 12, 2008 6:58 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
UTAPOUT, glad to see there’s someone else that understands… Sherk could not take BJ down! Sherk would have been beaten even quicker in trying to force that takedown. It takes a lot of energy to take someone down and drains even more energy when a fighter doesn’t get a takedown. Even Sherk would get tired quickly.
by THORAZINE on Jun 12, 2008 6:58 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Smokes I understand what you are saying, but BJ is too much of an elusive fighter for Sherk to get in close enough for a TD. Everytime he stepped inside the pocket he got nailed with a jab or a combo. Sherk has a fast shot from the outside but BJ has got freakish reflexes, and the best sprawl around. BTW, comparing BJ to Franca is like apples and oranges.

i think rich clementi would be an awesome fight! two guys going in there with a mission to prove they are top tier in the division! they both also have alot of experience which would stand for alot ! i do not think grey would be as good of a fight because it would e wrestler against wrestler! we all know how thos fights can turn out! i think that sherk has much better wrestling than grey and would beat him via decision!
which brings me back to my original comment on clementi, he is a good submission guy from his back and they are both huge guys ! i think that would be the best fight to do right now!

why does every one assume BJ has to vacate the belt? Dan hederson had 2 belts in 2 weight classes, and tried to defend them both. BJ can go up and down defending the different titles he WILL win!!

There will be an interim lightweight champ if BJ fights at 170.
by RealDrew on Jun 12, 2008 1:02 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
kevin, hendo kept two belts in Pride, not in the UFC. I don’t think dana wants any one fighter to be able to gain more than one belt at once.
by linx on Jun 12, 2008 1:08 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Dana said he doesn’t like guys jumping weight classes all that much, but he did say he wants to see Penn and GSP go at it.
“Penn against GSP is a huge fight. I think that fight needs to happen.”
It wouldn’t be fair for the rest of the 155 class if BJ didn’t defend the title at least a few times a year. I think Penn would have to clean out the division a little more before he can take on GSP.
by RealDrew on Jun 12, 2008 1:21 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think I remember Dana saying that if he beat the winner of Florian/Huerta, he would consider that cleaning out the division, and he could move up to fight.
by naturalshadow on Jun 12, 2008 4:32 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Because if he wants to create a grudge match using TUF then it’ll hold two belts up for 8 months and on top of that the second belt not being defended at the end of that time would be held up for another 4 months because of Penn needing time to rest after defending a title. Just seems like too much work on Dana’s part. He’ll probably do the interm title deal tho
by Smokes on Jun 12, 2008 7:01 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
i agree with u kevin. just because bj fights at 155 and 170 doesn’t mean he should vacate the 155 belt. as long as bj makes weight for his title fights, then he should be able to keep it.
everyone wants a. silva to move up to 205, but i’m sure there not going to take the belt from him. so why would they take the belt from bj. think about it sherk!!
by CBfighter on Jun 12, 2008 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
if you guys are correct and one fighter is able to get more than one belt, imagine how busy they’ll be in order to defend those belts at their different weight classes. It’s not just a matter if a fighter is willing to work that much more, but at the end might also have to delay title fights all together in order to keep those belts.

There are so many good fighters at 155 right now. It would be a very bad time for BJ to jump to 170. A. Silva can discuss going to 205 because there isn’t anyone worthy of getting a title shot at 185.

No one really knows anything at this point. But just making an assumption based on how Dana doesn’t want guys constantly going back and forth between weight classes, I’d seriously doubt that Penn would be allowed to keep the 155 strap while trying to compete for the WW belt.

Not bad, but Faber is the face of the WEC, and I don’t think they would move him to the UFC. At the same time, I don’t think Sherk wants to move to the WEC, simply because outside of the 145 and 135 lb. weight classes, it is considered a farm league.

Adam this is probably the very first time Id have to disagree with you. Faber is a nutcase but I just dont think he has the size to take Sherk out. I mean, Tyson Griffin beat Faber (his only defeat). I know it was a few years ago but Id have to go with Sherk. If Urijah couldnt finish Pulver, I dont see him beating Sherk at all. in all honesty, I would perfer to see a Rich Clementi vs. Matt Wiman match-up than a Rich Clementi vs. Sean Sherk match-up.
I think a Joe Lauzon vs. Sean Sherk would be a perfect billing. Joe Lauzon is popular in the UFC, he trains with BJ Penn and he lost his last fight against Kenny Florain.
Joe is also a top 10 lightweight right now in that division, with almost all of the other lightweights being booked except for Gray, Joe, Clementi, and Wiman, so you can say its either one of those TUF alums to fight Sherk.

Unless they’re signing an opponent from outside the organization they don’t have anyone available in early august that’s on par with Sean Sherk. Maynard doesn’t deserve a shot at a guy like Sherk this early. Is he 5-0? Gimme a break…
I think Florian is going to take out Huerta within 2 rounds…no doubt about it. Huerta is good, but has holes in his game that a technical guy like Florian is going to expose. Huerta is going to make one mistake and Florian is going to catch him. Count on it!

By my count, Diego has GSP, Fitch, Alves, Koscheck, Lytle, probably Swick, and soon to be BJ Penn ahead of him. You could argue that Hughes and Serra are too. He could make 155. He’d be big, but its not like he’s ripped to shreds at 170. I think he’d be dominant as hell at 155, because he wouldnt have to deal with the wrestling of big guys like GSP, Fitch, and Hughes. He could really showcase his skills and I dont think guys like Huerta, Florian or even Sherk could beat him. Dont get me wrong, I actually find him pretty annoying. I think it would be interesting to see it. The poace he would set at his size in that division would be tough to deal with.

In my opinion Sherk looked like a fool in his fight against BJ. It was suprising to me that Sherk wanted to stand with BJ, it almost seems like all that trash talking paid off for BJ, because all Sherk wanted to do was knock his block off. To me it really looked like the 2nd Hughes/St.Piere fight, with the traditional wrestler trying to get the highlight real knockout against the tradional stiker.
