UFC Quick Quote: Nate Marquardt robbed twice in London

"On a side note, our room was robbed last night and my computer, iPod, passport and several other items were stolen. That means we got robbed two days in a row here in London! HA :)"
-- Nate Marquardt tells MMAWeekly.com about his fantastic weekend at UFC 85: "Bedlam" at the O2 Arena in London, England, this past weekend. First, he gets a point deducted that should not have been for an illegal blow to the back of Thales Leites' head, which ends up costing him the fight. Second, his hotel rooms gets robbed. When it rains it pours. In the piece he asks for a rematch. For his sake let's hope he finds new and more secure accommodations if and when that happens.

Definite rematch! Hopefully they’ll catch this thief as the ref from his fight is more than likely immune from prosecution.

No doubt Nate came out better in this fight, but how much of this was because of the illegal knee? That was one of the hardest blows I’ve ever seen anybody take and continue to fight.

I think herb dean was extra hard on marquardt because of the knee early on. I would have preferred to see the fight scored a draw making a rematch even more likely.

Didn’t somebody jump Michael Bisping’s dad in England at UFC 75? England is crazy.
by "Mr. NC-17" on Jun 10, 2008 9:11 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, I think Bispings dad got jumped in the parking lot.
As for the Loss, Nate deserved it. The elbow wasnt illegal but the Knee was for sure and so was the piledriver. Its Nate’s fault, he should have fought under conrol. We cant say he deserved to win the fight because we dont know how much the illegal knee took out of tHales. Props to tHales for continuing and fighting like a warrior!

Sounds like you are a bit of a Thales nuthugger.
by OJR on Jun 11, 2008 8:07 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
First of all, I am a Leites NutHugger! That doesnt mean that I have a biased oppinion. That was a very close fight, and I have to give the edge to Thales because the fight was close, and like Rogan said, thales was not going to recover 100% from that illegal knee, so props to THales.
Thales could have chosen to notr continue to fight, and he would have won the match, but he didnt, he hung in there and went to War, I have to respect that!
Its Nate’s fault. If he fights under control, he probably wins the fight, but he didnt so he lost!
Whats there to argue about?

Your second post makes you appear to be more impartial.
No argument. I agree for the most part.

I can only imagine how it must feel to get to your room after a bullshit call and have your shit stolen too.

Even though the elbow was legal apparently the pile driver isn’t… So if Herb really knew the rules Marquardt would have lost anyways. They need to change the rule on knees to a downed opponent. And seriously, Marquardt did whoop his ass.
by bnf on Jun 10, 2008 9:19 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I totally agree with a rematch (for a couple fights actually) BUT if Herb did not give the point deduction for the (non-)illegal elbow he most certainly would have for the modified powerbomb/neck destroying move at the end, because that WAS illegal.
by sycboi on Jun 10, 2008 9:21 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
You gotta admit that pile driver looked good though.
by JV on Jun 10, 2008 9:36 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
ya a move may look good, but go watch WWE if thats the case.. MMA has rules, and the safty of the fighters are first… NAte deserved to lose first with that totally illegal knee, the elbow i give it to him, but then that powerbomb… like wtf fight a fight… don’t be diong shit that can ruin a guyz career so you can get another win, especially a illegal move
by Ricky on Jun 10, 2008 10:40 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The knee was illegal, but that rule needs to be changed. I don’t know how a fighter is expected to wait for both knees to come up off the floor before he can throw a knee. Thales was getting up and already had one knee off of the ground. I really don’t see what the difference in safety is when a knee is down, or 2 inches above the floor, but in the UFC it is the difference between winning with a KO, or losing via point deduction.
by naturalshadow on Jun 11, 2008 12:42 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Right, there is no difference with a knee to the face if his knee was an inch off the ground. The problem is if someone is laying on their back they don’t want them get knees dropped on them. Very Dangerous ,so they make that rule. There needs to be a grey area like if someone is rising and is only on one knee I think it’s ok, Look at Diego Sanchez Joe Riggs fight. That knee Diego hit Riggs with would have been illegal a split second earlier. Riggs barely had that second knee off the ground. Brandon Vera vs. Justin Eilers Also a knee very close to being illegal. So maybe that rule needs to be looked at because they can have both knees up and just one hand down and the knee is still illegal. I don’t agree with that.
by getrawbc on Jun 11, 2008 7:16 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Hey Ricky, I didnt know the rules were for the safty of the fighters? I didnt know the knees were illegal to a grounded opponent? thanks for clearing it up, it still looked good though!
by JV on Jun 11, 2008 9:43 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe if he didnt gas out trying to stop him soo fast after the knee stopage he would have had the energy to finish the almost lifeless opponant instead of resting on him and then the score cards and ref wouldnt have had anything to do with it…
by jb on Jun 10, 2008 9:30 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
While aside from the point deductions, he won the fight. After the first knee, Leites slowed down. You cant say that had no effect. As for the punches in second round, could be argued those were legal. And last, the pile driver was totally illegal. How that went unmentioned completely by commentators and ref is insane. You gotta follow the rules, period.
by Joey 1.0 on Jun 10, 2008 9:36 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Obviously Nate won that fight. If you lose a point in two different rounds and it’s a split descision, you did good. lol It was a split wasn’t it?
by Toms Bombs on Jun 10, 2008 9:41 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
2 points deducted in a three round fight and getting a split decision loss is kind of a domination of that fight.
by JV on Jun 10, 2008 9:51 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, I think it was a split. I believe it was Cecil Peoples who had him winning?
by naturalshadow on Jun 11, 2008 12:45 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
No, Cecli peoples was the last judge and he gave it to Leites. The 2nd judge scored it in favor of Nate, which is B.S…I dont know what that judge was looking at. After loosing 2 points, there is no way Nate could have won that fight!
by john on Jun 11, 2008 9:16 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Nate was somewhat dominant but I mean, he broke several rules, he just got deducted on one that wasn’t valid.
We don’t know how much that knee hurt his performance.
Did you ever see that video from pride where one of the gracie’s traingle choke him, and after Nate taps he punches the guy in the face.
What a jerk.
Renzo Gracie flys out of nowhere and kicks him in the face though =)
I’m at work and I can’t go on youtube or I’d post the link.

almeida held the choke after nate tapped that’s why nate punched him.

how about that pile driver? i paid alot of attention to nate’s standup in this fight because he recently said he thought he could stand with silva in a rematch…nope. i used to think nate was the biggest threat to silva despite the first go-round, but i’m not so sure after that performance(even though he did look good in many spots and did really win if you don’t count the illegal blows and bad call).

Marquardt’s an absolute idiot. He also mentions in that article that he lost on a “technicality.” Hey, moron, Herb Dean deducted a point for a reason: your illegal knee immediately changed the course of the fight. Leites was a different fighter from that point on, and there’s no denying it. Just look at the way Nate was able to pounce on him as soon as the fight started again.
And, as has been mentioned, the piledriver was illegal anyway. So let’s give the guy his elbow back and then deduct the point for the piledriver. Either way, he lost. Good.

I don’t see why mmamania would post something as retarded as this. Saying Marquardt was ‘robbed’ twice.
First of all, the illegal elbow was not shown clearly on ANY replay. The only replay it is shown on Leites head is ducked and it is 100% possible that his head was turned even more than the angle of the footage showed, which Herb Dean was in a position to see better than we were.
Second of all, even if it weren’t an illegal call, he deserved another point deducted or even DQ’d outright for the piledriver. Even Big John said it’s an illegal move and he didn’t know why it wasn’t called.
Marquardt is a dirty, dirty fighter. Someone’s already posted the pancrase video of him hitting Almeida after Almeida choked him out, he also liked to throw elbows in the clinch in Pancrase (against the rules). He’s been popped for steroids. Now this fight. How can you seriously defend him anymore?
by Nouvelle on Jun 11, 2008 1:36 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
NOuvelle and Ben: Great posts, I completely agree! I dont care what anyone says, that illegal knee did change the course of the fight and thales was not the same after that! Nate is a dirty fighter and I hope he never gets a rematch against Silva….
As for Almeida, I would like to see him Choke out Nate again. For those that dont know, almeida with out a doubtr, has the best submission game in the UFC’s middleweight division. He also has the best stand up oput of all the gracies. He will be a force at middleweight….I am very happy that the UFC brought him back!
Nate “THe dirty cheater” Marquardt
Greg Jackson’s fighters have not been doing so well lately!

Finally, the truth comes out!! Marquardt is a true professional: the knee was a second off, the other deduction was a horrible call, and he KNEW he was gonna get robbed..why else would a fighter of his caliber piledrive another fighter with seven seconds left in the fight?? He prolly figured he was gonna get screwed anyway, so why not go out with a bang?? Who cares if he didn’t finish him, does anyone ever give Karo any heat for not finishing fights?? Not that I know of..it doesn’t matter. Nate is gonna be the middleweight champ soon.

It looked to me that his actons were not those of a true champion.

I don’t care what anyone thinks about knees to a downed fighter, as of thismtime they are illegal and so is his pile driver he did. I would like to tell Nate to STFU and move on…you were the one that could not follow the rules yet you want another shot at Silva?
by StayDown on Jun 11, 2008 7:05 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Really? I mean really? You do know that Silva last lost to Okami for knees to a downed opponent, right? When your fighting you try and time the knees with when they get up. You try to control your strikes so they don’t hit the back of the head but the other guy moves too so you can’t always be on the money. Sometimes you get a kick to the sack and you give the guy his five minutes and you move on with it. He didn’t throw two knees to the head did he? Or multiple illegal elbows? I admit the point deductions are warranted and he shouldn’t have piledrived the doode at the end but if I was going to lose a fight I was winning by decision I’d drop the doode on his head and hope I knocked him out. Then I would have been DQ’d but people I’ll do what it takes to win

it was actually an upkick while Okami was in Silva’s guard that KOd him
