Sengoku 3: Yoshida, Wiuff victorious

sengoku 3 results
Olympic gold medalist and former PRIDE heavyweight Hidehiko Yoshida (8-6-1) got back into the win column after dropping three straight by submitting geriatric kickboxer Maurice "Mo" Smith (12-13) during the Sengoku 3 main event earlier this morning at the Saitama Super Arena in Saitama, Japan.

Also on the card, Japanese wrestling star and popular heavyweight Kazuyuki Fujita (15-7) went from "Iron Head" to iron lung after getting knocked in the first round out by the suddenly resurgent Travis "Diesel" Wiuff (53-11).

The usually durable Fujita is just 3-3 in his last six fights and fans were disappointed with his early exit. Wiuff on the other hand has won nine straight and averages an impressive eight fights per year.

Former UFC heavyweight and Abu Dhabi standout Marcio "Pe De Pano" Cruz (4-2) made quick work of Korea's Mu Bae Choi (7-3) after submitting the Team Tackle wrestler via rear naked choke in the first round.

The Sengoku 3 event kind of took place under the radar, as its lack of press and pre-fight hype left a lot of fans surprised that an event was even taking place.

Apparently it was a big secret overseas as well, since the usually rockin' Saitama Super Arena was only half full.

Here are the Sengoku 3 complete results:

-Hidehiko Yoshida defeated Maurice Smith by Submission (Neck Crank) at 2:23, R1
-Travis Wiuff defeated Kazuyuki Fujita by KO (Punch) at 1:24, R1
-Kazuo Misaki defeated Logan Clark by Unanimous Decision, R3
-Nick Thompson defeated Michael Costa by Submission (Kimura) at 4:13, R2
-Sanae Kikuta defeated Chris Rice by Submission (Armbar) at 3:54, R1
-Marcio Cruz defeated Mu Bae Choi by Submission (Rear Naked Choke) at 4:37, R1
-Rodrigo Damm defeated Jorge Masvidal by TKO (Strikes) at 4:38, R2
-Fabio Silva defeated Yoshiki Takahashi by KO (Knee) at 0:24, R2

I must agree with MMAmania! It doesn’t have huge names on it, but it is MMa fighting, and I have enjoyed watching what I have seen so far..

Not the best event, but not the worst!..For seNgoku, not to shabby…last event was better..

Who are these guy’s? This is a perfect example of too many organizations and a watered down group of fighters, the most unfortunate thing is that some people actually paid to see this.

Yoshida, Smith, Fujita, Wiuff, Nick Thompson, and Pe De Pano have all fought in either pride or the ufc before, and are long time veterans of the sport. If you seriously don’t know who any of those guys are, then I suggest you watch more mma.

They’re fighting in this untelevised, unpopular and unknown organization for a reason! Consider the fact that you have to be a purest of the sport or a bleeding heart MMA aficianado to recognize the names says much about these guys. Because they fought in the UFC and the now defunct Pride doesn’t make them “quality” fighters. They are in fact fighting in a lower level MMA organization. This can also be said of former major league baseball players that can’t cut it in America and simply move to Japan to finish up their careers, its the same comparison.
As for me, yes I have no idea who they are and to further stress my point I really don’t care who they are.

Nick Thompson has previously been one of the top 10 welterweights in the world according to Sherdog, and has one something like 18 out of his last 19 fights. His last loss was to Karo Parysian. Keep in mind also that MMA is probably more popular in Japan than it is in the United States. Furthermore, some fighters—like Thompson, actually preferred to sign with Japanese organizations like World Victory Road because they offered better financial deals that the UFC did. To call these fighters “watered down” is an insult, and to say that “the most unfortunate thing is that some people actually paid to see this” only demonstrates your own ignorance of the sport. Way to go.

Maurice Smith was the 2nd ever ufc heavyweight champion who fought the likes of couture, bas rutten, coleman, among others.

If you don’t know who he is, then you’re a pretty big noob to the sport. It’s like pretending to be a baseball fan while not knowing who Joe Dimagio is.

Saying this show is evidence of over-saturation when you don’t know who any of these guys are makes you look like a complete tool and an idiot. Don’t speak about things of which you have no clue

by yohnstoppable on Jun 9, 2008 7:05 PM EDT up reply actions

MMAZING your arguement had a bit more credence, although Sherdog had Matt Serra at #1 at 170 for some time last year, so certain things fall through the perverbial cracks now and again. The field of fighters being spread out among these different organizations does water the FIELD down. If these fighters are the real deal, they would also recognize that America has the UFC and that it is the ultimate proving ground. Hence the baseball comment and finishing up their careers in Japan. If the money is there go for it, but don’t try to say that these are world class guys, they wouldn’t, couldn’t and didn’t make it in the UFC. Although I did say I din’t know who these guys were, I do know what they aren’t. Opinions vary and you can go ahead and keep spending your money wisely on these kind of shows. Way to go!
