I would like to see Alves fight one more before any thoughts of a title fight.
Maybe Swick would be a good match-up?

i think a little too much is being made of Alves not making weight. This is the 1st time he did not make weight, so I give him the benefit of the doubt. He has had many welterweight fights already that he made weight for, so too much is being made of this weight issue. Could it be that maybe he really hurt his ankle and he couldnt cut the weight properly or maybe his cycle was out of whack since he last fought a short time ago in April.
Too much is being made of this not making weight. I am not saying it isnt a big deal because it is, but Alves has been solid, so I give him the benefit of the doubt.

I will say 1 last thing about the fightl. Yes THiago did not make weight, but if anyone thinks that was the reason why he beat Hughes, then you guys are just haters. THiago weighed 174 lbs, Hughes cutts about 15-20 pounds for a fight so the day of the fight they probably weighed the same amount….and if Tgiago was a little bigger so what….Hughes won 9 titles being the bigger fighter PERIOD! His career has been built on being bigger and stronger…so what if he wasnt the biggest guy in the Octagon for 1 of his fights….
All you Alves haters have been bashing me since I first picked him to beat Karo…look what happened!
All week, I had to hear how Hughes was going to take him down, lay on him for 15 minutes….What Happened?
WAR THIAGO ALVES!!!

I love it. I was getting pummeled all week by the Hughes lovers. He is too strong… We will see an old school slam… Blah blah blah… And what happened??? Hughes got KTFO just like we said. It is over Hughes. The weight had nothing to do with his victory. If Alves layed on him for 3 rounds there might be something to it, but it was just a good old knee to the face!!!

I find it ironic how when Hughes beat Gracie, he was talking how the sport had passed Royce by. That old school MMA could not compete with the new, better athletes. Now that appears to be happening to Matt.

I love it too. Thiago Alves is a legit contender for GSP, I really like his game. I just hope that not making weight doesn’t cost him a title shot cuz he deserves it right after GSP dominates Fitch. After Alves/GSP, GSP should take on Penn in like February or something of ’09.

I thought I’d see a different Hughes… Honestly about anyone could have dominated Hughes; Alves looked good but Hughes just looked horrible.
Alves will have one more fight before a title shot. I’d like to see Kos Vs. Alves. This would set the stage for my “one in a million” chance title fight of Fitch vs. Kos…

Not gOing to Happen because Koschek is going to loose to Chris Lytle! Take that to the bank!

The end of a legend. Hughes helped take the sport to a great place, time for him to pass the baton. Hughes is still a good fighter but time has caught up with him and I don’t see him being content being an also ran for much longer. He has branched out with book/gym etc and it is time to call the ball.

I cant wait to hear people come on this site and start crying and bashing me about the 4 lbs.
Pride stars like Sakuraba and Wanderlei spent their whole careers fighting muych bigger and Heavier guys….I never heard them bitch n complain about 4 pounds. Wanderlei fought Fujjita, Cro Cop twice, Mark Hunt!
Sakuraba fought his entire career being out weighed by atleast 10 pounds.
Im in no mood to start hearing the B.S about how thiago being 4 lbs over was the difference in the fight…..The difference was the Flying Knee!
This is the last time I will repeat this statement., Takedown defense is a skill. Like all skills it can be approved apon. Tito was supposed to lay all over Machida, but Machida stuffered every takedown. THiago’s takedown defense improved a ton, tossing Hughes off of him the majority oif the time.
All I am saying is that If I guy has bad takedown defense today, that does not mean that it wont be improved down the line.
Just some food for thought!
by john on Jun 8, 2008 10:33 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Right. If 4 lbs was such a big deal, then you could say that every heavyweight fight is unfair because those guys dont ever have to cut weight. The 4 lbs wasnt the issue, the issue was that Hughes cant compete with a younger, multidimensional, and stacked WW division. He should fight his grudge match with Serra then retire. The way Serra fought against GSP, Im sure Hughes would have no problem putting him away.
by the_mexicutioner on Jun 8, 2008 12:58 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
If I can play devil’s advocate for a moment and hopefully inspire a little debate: If 4 pounds doesn’t matter, then why bother making weight or having weight classes? Don’t get me wrong, from the looks of things Alves would’ve brutalized him anyway. But from the point of view of someone who knows firsthand about cutting weight, 4 pounds does make a difference.

I hate to say it but I believe Hughes is close to his end, I mean come on he said so himself on the Ultimate Fighter. There is a new breed of fighters these days that are breed for one thing and one thing only MMA, and no wrestler, bjj, or any other one sided fighter is going to be able to compete with them……..GSP….ALVES.
by yoububg on Jun 8, 2008 10:41 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Calm down john haha. Anyway whats it matter GSP will destory Alves. :)
by Macho Bullshit on Jun 8, 2008 10:42 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
So you think anyone who cant beat GSP should just quit competing in mma? Not sure I understand your point!
by john on Jun 8, 2008 12:09 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t see this as a bad thing for Hughes at all. If he would have won then what. If GSP destroyed Jon Fitch then theres nobody for anyone to fight. Hughes has said he doesn’t want to fight for the title anymore. He wanted to get the fight he missed out on last year. He wants to tear Serra to shreds and then retire.

i’m probably going to get flamed for this…. but am i the only person that thinks “war whomever” is a little stupid. WAR THIAGO, WAR HUGHES, WAR GRANDMA"S DEPENDS, WAR STRONG CONDOMS, ETC. Just my opinion, and by all means WAR on, i’m just pointing out that the “saying” is kinda dumb sounding, and do you guys say it aloud? or is it just a typed thing. Keep in mind this is coming from a person that doesn’t use lol, rofl, roflmao, and so on. So i;m not exactly “internet cultured” so to speak.

Yeah I agree icefish, I cant understand this hate on Hughes anymore man, he doesnt really talk s#^@, he was humble in defeat, he isnt on top anymore, there is no reason to hate the guy that is alwasy steppin up when asks, the dude alwasy steps up to the plate and fights when things get bad and people pull out.

Let me be the first to call it:
Matt Serra his going to knock Hughes’s head off!
Matt hughes on the Serra fight: “that is I fight I want for sure, My wife wants the fight” lol Serra, must have been laughing his ass off. Cant wait to see Serra Rock Hughes into retirment….Then Blow Kisses at Hughes’s wife! That would just be awesome!
by john on Jun 8, 2008 12:11 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Serra is a one trick pony. I think Hughes rips his head off in his final fight.
by naturalshadow on Jun 8, 2008 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Let me get this straight….Serra is a 1 trick pony but Hughes is some kind of well rounded mixed martial artist? Give me a break! Hughes is nothing more then a better Tito Ortiz. Neither can throw a punch to save their lives. Only difference is Hughes is better at passing guard and better at submissions?
How is Serra not well rounded? He has better stand up then Hughes (by far), and he has better Ju jitsu. Only advantages Hughes has is in wrestling and strength!
Serra going to take Hughes out! Then blow a kiss to mrs. Hughes! LOL
by john on Jun 9, 2008 8:34 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
i’d rather see alves fight gsp then fitch. a lot of the big names in the ufc ww division have wrestling as their base. And being that gsp has freaking crazy wrestling, when he fights these guys, he has a pretty clear advantage. I wanna see gsp vs alves cause alves looked like he had pretty good td defence, and if gsp had problems taking him down it would prob turn into a crazy ass stand up fight. being as both these guys have some siiick stand up!
plus idk if i would go as far as saying gsp is afraid of getting knocked out, but i think he didn’t look as comfortable on his feet in the 2nd serra fight then he has in the past. if gsp moves to mw he’ll have to deal with a lot of good stand up guys like franklin, Bisping, Leben, Quarry, Okami, Silva, and the guy with prob best stand up ever Travis Lutter (HAHAHA). so quoting Joe Rogan being as he says it before almost every fight “This fights going to answer a lot of questions” lol
by shinbob on Jun 8, 2008 12:37 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Make this short and sweet. Alves has had trouble in the past making weight. Requiring him to take illegal drugs as far as UFC goes. You don’t make weight and it is a sign of lack of discipline. And he was really even close. Yes, it was four pounds…but I bet the farm that he cut a bit of weight just to get down to 174. Maybe he should do what some have said and jump up to 185. Cause news flash if he can’t make weight in a title match…he ain’t going to win a title no matter how awesome of a fighter he is.
All in all big win for him…but not sure if he should get a title shot. Hughes was good in his day…but like many of you can’t disagree has lost a step or two in the cage.
by TBlades07 on Jun 8, 2008 12:45 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I think that next for Alves should be Koshchek and the winner of that gets the winner of GSP/Fitch.
by the_mexicutioner on Jun 8, 2008 12:52 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Alves vs Swick sounds better to me with the winner getting a title shot.
by JV on Jun 8, 2008 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
he should get a shot but after he fights 2 or 3 fights in a row MAKING weight i don’t see him beating fitch or gsp though

Haha I love it. Alves is a far better fighter, and it was completely obvious, but the old school red neck is done for. Makes me happy, these young bucks are evolving, Hughes is still layin’ around praying that MMA hasn’t evolved. HAHA

I thought that Alves was going to win just based on the shite performance that Hughes put on against Lytle. I am not a Hughes fan, but I was hoping he would win after Alves came in overweight.
by Ade on Jun 8, 2008 2:48 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Ade- SHITE PERFORMANCE? If you call dominating all rounds against a game fighter while never letting him get any position, while constantly peppering shots and going for submitions SHITE then I think SHITE must not mean what I think it means. Hughes dominated Lytle he was always just one step from putting him away in each round. Give Lytle some credit and the credit Hughes deserves in that win, YOU HATER!
by GodannarJunkie on Jun 8, 2008 6:16 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
In my opinion it was shite I am afraid especially compared to his other performances, and to me this was a sign that he did not really have it any more. And that find should have definately been stood up a lot more as there were long instances where nothing was actually happening, and if it were any other fighter it would have definately been stood back up a lot more times than it was. I am not a Hughes fan but give him respect for what he has accomplished. I think he was lucky that BJ injured his ribs in their second fight where he was getting his ass kicked and was extremely happy when GSP beat him a second time when all those Hughes lovers said GSP only won the other match because Hughes did not try to take him down. Man that was sweet. But as I said previously I thought Alves was going to win the fight but I was really rooting for Hughes to win when I found out Alves was overweight. I was actually disapointed when Alves won. So I can’t be that much of a hater. I do apologise for not being Hughes’s No1 fan like yourself, but I am afraid that there are quite a few that aren’t. Deal with it.
by Ade on Jun 9, 2008 5:26 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Did BJ injure his ribs? Or did Hughes injure them for him?
by chefdaddy on Jun 9, 2008 11:37 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Would you seriously put money on Hughes if he and BJ fought again? I think not.
by Ade on Jun 9, 2008 2:09 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well anyway this was definently a better outcome for the WW division then Hugehs winning, I think we can all agree on that, and this fight says a couple things about what has happened and what will happen:
1) Thiago has good take down defense, and is a bomb striker, perfect match for GSP, his strengths our in GSP’s weakness’s, we havnt seen GSP willing to strike in a LONG while. GSP has got some work to do.
2) I personally think this takes away from GSP’s aura of having improved so much and being SOOO dominant. Cuz lets face it, that all started when he dominated Hughes on the ground, Hughes isnt the same anymore, Couldnt hurt Lytle OR Alves, and those 2 were only trying to stand back up, GSP is the only guy that fought back on the ground, which is why he tore up Hughes. Hugehs just lost it, tahts all.
I think all you realistic GSP fans should at least be a little nervous
by The Anomaly on Jun 8, 2008 6:27 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Alves should be next in line for the belt
by Little Focker on Jun 8, 2008 6:47 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Agreed, after Fitch…No need to fight Kos or Swick..YOu have to spread out your contenders, or they will fall off the scene and the div will not be deep at all.MW Div..Maybe the match for Dec O8 or Jan 09. You have to spread out all the title defenses and main events to have worthy PPV’s each month. I just wish the UFC wasn’t every month, like WWE is… Have a month off here and there, to make each PPV a quality card and not something to throw together, just because..

Look at the last 2 fights Alves had…
Karo and Hughs.
Now look at the last 2 fights Fitch had…
A new guy and Diego (I think)
Regardless Alves has fought the better fighters.
Yes I know Fitch has beat Alves but the Alves must have started doing something right since that battle.
I would like to see Alves fight gsp first but if he cant than I would rather see him fight someone with significant stand-up.
Actually him moving up might not be such a bad move if things dont pan out.
by Yikes on Jun 8, 2008 7:14 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
If Hughes wants it, he should fight Serra. Matt Serra is pretty much screwed if he doesn’t fight Hughes so he might as well. Hughes will always be remembered as a legend of the sport. Not to mention he coached on two different seasons of TUF.
by RyanHobbs on Jun 8, 2008 9:39 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I am huge GSP fan. I think Thiago is the only guy that could give him trouble or hughes is fallen so far down that he is just a big name now. I saw Karo fight too and Karo put out more fight than hughes. To be honest I like to see Karo and hughes go at it too.
I know Thiago lost to Finch but I think Thiago now would woop his a$$
I like to see thiago and KOS go at it and take on the winner of GSP and Finch (most likely GSP)
by TKO on Jun 8, 2008 10:03 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I think that Kos should be made to fight Karo and then probably a rematch with a 100% Diego before he gets a crack at the belt, to me he seems to have had the “easier” opponents in his climb up the division.
by Ade on Jun 9, 2008 5:33 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Boy there are alot of Hughes haters. Don’t really get it. He never makes excuses when he loses. I never heard him say anything about Alves not making weight. I’m a Hughes fan and the 4 lbs. wouldn’t have made a difference anyway. The night of the fight Alves was simply much bigger, stronger, faster, and more athletic. I believe Hughes can still beat pretty much anybody he can over-power. Obviously he can’t over-power GSP or Alves. I disagree that Alves should move up. He is to short for the Spider and I think the Spider would own him. I wouldn’t mind seeing Kos vs Alves. I’d hope Alves would win and then I think GSP vs Alves would be a good fight. I’d have to pick GSP in that one.
