UFC Quick Quote: Dana White on UFC 85: 'Cursed'

"I'm wondering if this kid [Thiago Alves] should be at 170 or not. If this were a title fight, I'd be really pissed. What are you going to do? Matt Hughes agreed to fight him at 175, so it's not all bad. ... I can't wait to get this card behind me, to be honest with you. Eight guys dropped out. The main event guy can't make weight. It's crazy."
-- UFC President Dana White shares his thoughts via Yahoo!Sports.com on the fiasco also known as UFC 85: "Bedlam" at the O2 Arena in London, England, on Saturday, June 7. The latest blow was Thiago Alves coming in four pounds heavy four his main event fight with Matt Hughes. For what it's worth Hughes proves once again that he is such a team player, agreeing to take the fight with Alves at a catchweight with little to no resistance. In addition, the UFC has really demonstrated its superior depth by cobbling together a card that is still ripe with talent. I'm still interested regardless of all the shenanigans.

Can u still bet on the fight? Do the odds change? Those are the big questions. Other then that I dont care. If it were a title fight I would be really pissed because it would change from 5 rounds to 3. In this case it wont really effect the action tomorrow.
However, it is very unprofesional of my boy Alves. No excuses, he should have made the weight. He was probably trying to bulk up for this fight and the weight cut didnt go as usual because he normally looks great at 170 lbs. This is bad for Alves because he is close to earning a title shot, and it does not look good to Dana at all. He hates it when fighters do that, especially a main event guy. Hopefully Dana doesnt hold a grudge against Tiago after tomorrow when he knocks Hughes the F out! After Hughes I would like to see him face Marcus Davis!!!

That’s a good question about the betting line, I have no idea if him not making weight would change things at all. I would love to see him fight Davis again. When they fought earlier in their careers they both looked like different fighters then they are today. If Thiago gets a HL reel KO in this fight I would think Dana forgive him for his weight F up, but only Dana knows for sure.

what’s with your boy John? no “help” at making weight? I think he knew Hughes would still take the fight rather than cancel the main event, so he purposely didn’t try to cut, that way he didn’t lose too much weight/energy. He is obviously scared…talking too much shit about how Karo is better than Hughes! I hope Hughes (who I don’t like), kills him!

Happy birthday John
it makes sense, he knows matt hughes is a company guy, and will take the fight regardless! I think he just said fuck it, cut down to around 170 and didn’t worry too much after that!

I have been in the minority, like yourself, saying that Alves will win this fight. The fact that he missed weight brings up a lot of questions. The first thing is where is this kids head at? If he is not there mentally it will be tough in the biggest fight of his life. I hope we hear some kind of statement from him soon. With that said, I still KNOW that Hughes has some mental hurdels to get over and I expect that he will still get KTFO!!!

The Miami clubs, apparently…

Say what you want, I am excited for this fight. Did everyone forget that we get to see Swick Vs Davis… This will be fight of the night and KO of the night.

With Swick laying in the center of the octagon “Keith Jarine Style”

Taylor / Liaudin will be fight of the night, but Swick/davis will be quality.

did you see swicks last fight? he looked horrible
by kevin on Jun 6, 2008 3:48 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Unlike Alves, Swick actually cut too much weight and did it too fast for Burkman. He looked horrible but I’m willing to bet “a fictional amount of money” that he will come out like his old 185 days.
I like Davis to win this fight with a KO but I bet a lot of people will be surprised with Swick.

I’ll bet a million (fictional money) he loses. lol “fictional money” wtf

I refered to it here as “UFC 85 – Cursed” a few weeks back. I gotta start trademarking the stuff I come up with …. LOL

I still can’t believe he couldn’t make wait, especially since he fought a couple of months ago. Whatever, I’m still looking forward to the fights.
by Haze on Jun 6, 2008 2:41 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Cursed is the perfect name for this card. One good thing that might come out of it is that with expectations set SO low – any halfway decent action will make the event a success.
I was leaning towards Alves – in that i think he’s a more complete fighter, but i dont think im going to do that with this mess – i hope Hughes wins in good ol Hughes fashion.
by mmajitsu - jerrolds on Jun 6, 2008 2:42 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I think that Alves knew that weight is not mandatory in non tittle fights and that Hughes would take it under these conditions. So it is possible he chose to stay healthy and not drop all the weight and deplete his body of water and enzimes. This would provide him with the edge needed to earn a win. Think I am not being fare, well he wasw suspended for steroids after his KO of Tony DeSouza.
by SUPER CAL on Jun 6, 2008 2:50 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
matt hughes is the man. say what you want about his ego and whatever, but the dude always steps up when the ufc needs him to. he didn’t have to fight gsp that third time when serra got hurt. he could have waited for serra to get healthy and then he would have won the belt one last time, but instead he did what was in the best interest of the ufc and fought a fight he knew he was going to lose, and at the same time probably lost his last chance at winning that belt again. now he steps up again and fills in as the main event for this card against another opponent who is a bad match up for him, and when alves doesn’t make weight, he’s cool with fighting at a catch weight. cheers matt hughes, a true fighter! this all actually makes me want to see this fight more, i think it needed a little something to spice it up a bit. and i still think this card kicks ass, i hope kampmann and leites are ready for some tough fights coming off those injuries.

Thiago weighs like close to 200lbs normally…but Matt has got to be close to that weight normally also.

FUNNY HOW DANA SAYS ELITE XC’S SHOW WAS HORRIBLE AND NOT GOOD FOR THE SPORT WHEN HIS OWN MAIN EVENT FIGHTER COULDNT MAKE WEIGHT JUST LIKE LAST YEAR, LOL. HOPE THIS EFFECTS DANA’S BUY RATES…KARMA!!!
(sorry about the caps, need to emphasize my point, lol)
by bobby o'shea on Jun 6, 2008 3:33 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, Karma is biting Dana in his butt all the way to the bank.
by RedDog on Jun 6, 2008 3:49 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That’s not even apples and oranges. Dana can’t help at all if Alves didn’t make weight. Elite’s show was horrible in the way of production and the quality of the fighters. A comparison simply can’t be made.

feed him to spider silva if he misses weight again as punishment.
by kama kaze on Jun 6, 2008 3:33 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
WORD! He fights at 170 cause theres no point for him to fight at 185 LMAO! AND whats the deal with Silva, we gota wait all this time just for him to fight Okami!! So we gotta wait another 3 months after that for him to fght someone good, hella long!! Come on Silva, get in the cage already!
by ( (Adam G) ) on Jun 6, 2008 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yup, Silva is really starting to piss me off. He needs to get his ass in the cage. He is unfocused with all that boxing BS. I seriously think Okami could be the sleeper to take his belt. He ain’t going to win forever.
by bnf on Jun 6, 2008 3:53 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
okami is hurt, and they have no one that even wants to fight silva. I say vandy drops to 185.
by kevin on Jun 6, 2008 4:06 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not a chance. They fought once before, which Okami won by DQ after an illegal kick or something. Silva thought Okami could have easily continued fighting but chose to take a cowardly win. Silva is going to make an example of Okami, I mean more than he already has of Franklin, Henderson, Lutter, Leben, etc.
by PW on Jun 6, 2008 4:06 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe not gonna win forever, but he’s not losing his belt to Okami. I don’t care what anyone says, Rich put up the best fight thus far, i had him winning round 1 in their second fight (or at least very close) till he got caught. I think Rich should take one last shot at it, and Hendo definatley needs to take another shot at A. Silva.
by O damn he got caught on Jun 6, 2008 4:13 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I know they fought before. My point is that he doesn’t seemed focused right now. He was the one guy that was consistently defending his belt, now it is all about boxing and with no title defense on the horizan it makes me question what is going on with him. Someone will beat him eventually.
by bnf on Jun 6, 2008 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Rich severely lost the first round in the final 15 seconds. Henderson won round 1 on all 3 scorecards.
by ViolentMike on Jun 6, 2008 4:20 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I have 2 disagree with “damn”. Lutter almost finished him. I’ve seen fights get stoped alot sooner.
but you are right about Okami
by Nokimono on Jun 6, 2008 4:21 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
you guys are great, no one can beat him. the axe murderer has the best chance. Okami is hurt, and after their last fight, stands no chance!!

true, and I hear spider will be a coach with nog on tuf. UFC needs to do at least 1 title shot per ppv! wec has 2 per event. and lastly tuf needs to take a break, 2 seasons in a year is ridiculous!
by kevin on Jun 6, 2008 4:30 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
BJ for sure… What the hell does that mean about coaching. Now TUF holds up title defences for assistant coaches… Say it ain’t so.
by bnf on Jun 6, 2008 4:39 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
to be honest i was never a hughes fan… i always thought he was an arrogant cocky jock and nothign more… but i got nothing but respect for him in this fight… he takes a fight with alves… who’s on a hot streak and very dangerous on the feet no short notice… he has nothing to gain from this fight really… but saves the main event… and even when alves can’t make weight agrees to fight at 175… he is a true warrior and although he is arrogant… should be remembered as a true legend of the sport.
by haemophiliac on Jun 6, 2008 4:14 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
i still think this is gonna be a night of good fights, im really looking forward to it.
all the other problems can be deemed “cursed”, but not alves. thats pathetic, if you dont make weight i think your dont deserve a title shot for a long time.
im glad hughes made 170, i could only imagine all the smack that would be talked about him.
like hughes or not, you gotta admit hes a fighter. hell even everyone on here knew he woulda taken the fight regardless of the guy making weight, that earns alot of respect from me (if only me).
this totally changed my view of alves, first roids, and now you cant make weight? thats a real “competitor” for you. make him go to 185 and be a punching bag as punishment. maybe silva can fight him inbetween rounds with okami.
by the Killing Joke on Jun 6, 2008 4:26 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
i bet Alves is pissed at Dana for sayin he ain’t good enough to deserve a shot for a title.

by roy on Jun 6, 2008 6:45 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
does not matter, he could not even make weight .i still beleive he did this on purpose he knew that there was no way the fight would be canceled,he wanted an advantage and not having to cut weight the last week of training is a stamina advantage .I hope hughes smashes him in the first round just for that .Hell no he doesn’t deserve a title fight ,maybe when he becomes a little more professional!!!!!

Whatever the night brings, I’ll gladly shell out the $54.95 for HD, as opposed to wacthing the “Elite” XC throw up (for free) all over the average TV viewer again.
PS. Alves Sucks.
by Jrandolph on Jun 6, 2008 8:38 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
THE BIGGEST PROBLEM WITH THE UFC IS THAT THEY ALLOW FIGHTERS TO CUT IN EXCESS OF 20LBS AND DROP TO A LIGHTER WEIGHT CLASS.IF THE UFC IS GOING TO CONTINUE TO ALLOW THIS THEY SHOULD IMPOSE HEAVY FINES FOR NOT CUTTING TO THE WEIGHT THE FIGHTER SAYS HE CAN BE AT BY FIGHT DAY.ALVES IS A BITCH WHO IS TO CHICKEN SHIT TO FIGHT MEN HIS OWN SIZE. MY OTHER THOUGHT IS IF YOU NEED TO CUT 25 TO 30 LBS TO WIN A BELT IT IS NICE TO KNOW THAT THE FIGHTER THAT DOES THAT CAN CONVINCE HIMSELF THAT HE REALLY THE BEST AT THAT WEIGHT ALVES IS A BITCH
