UFC 85 weigh-in results for 'Bedlam' PPV event in London; Thiago Alves misses weight

ufc 85 weigh-in
The official weigh-in results for UFC 85: "Bedlam" at the O2 Arena in London, England, are in.

And there's some ridiculous news to report.

Thiago Alves came in super heavy at 174 pounds for his main event fight against Matt Hughes. He will not have to shed the extra poundage -- he and Hughes have agreed to fight at a catchweight.

He'll more than likely have to pay Hughes a percentage of his salary for the massive blunder and pay in the court of public opinion for the lack of professionalism.

Here are the official results:

170 lbs.: Matt Hughes (170) vs. Thiago Alves (174)
185 lbs.: Michael Bisping (184) vs. Jason Day (184)
185 lbs.: Nate Marquardt (185) vs. Thales Leites (185)
170 lbs.: Mike Swick (170) vs. Marcus Davis (170)
265 lbs.: Brandon Vera (228) vs. Fabricio Werdum (247)
185 lbs.: Martin Kampmann (186) vs. Jorge Rivera (185)
155 lbs.: Thiago Tavares (154.5) vs. Matt Wiman (155)
170 lbs.: Roan Carneiro (171) vs. Kevin Burns (170)
205 lbs.: Jason Lambert (205) vs. Luis Arthur Cane (204)
170 lbs.: Jess Liaudin (169) vs. Paul Taylor (169)
265 lbs.: Eddie Sanchez (244) vs. Antoni Hardonk (247)

*Note: Fighters are allowed to weigh one pound more than the division limit in non-title fights.

Remember that MMAmania.com will also provide LIVE round-by-round, blow-by-blow coverage of the main card action on fight afternoon, which is slated to air at 3 p.m. ET on pay-per-view (PPV) from the O2 Arena on Saturday, June 7.

Of course, the latest quick updates of the prelim bouts will begin to flow earlier than that at around 1:30 p.m. ET.

It's going to be an entertaining afternoon of mixed martial arts action ... check us out for all the pre, during and post-fight coverage you can handle.

Note that the UFC 85 PPV will re-air at 10 p.m. ET.

Are you kidding me? 4 pounds over isn’t even close, has he been working out with Carano?

by Haze on Jun 6, 2008 11:40 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

WOW, he was not even close! For Thiago, this is a number one contender match, since Dana said that with a win, he gets a title shot. With that said, he comes in FOUR pound heavy. That is unacceptable. Someone that can’t make weight does not even deserve to be in a main event, never mind fighting for #1 contender.

THe rest of Matt Hughes’s career is riding on this fight. With a win over Thiago and Serra, he gets a title shot. Matt is a company man that is not afraid to take risks. WHen Serra got hurt, he did not need to accept a fight with GSP. He could have waited for Serra to heal, and beat him to win the WW belt once more.

This fat Brazilian was just saying yesterday how great of condition he is in. Has he been training? It really isn’t fair to Hughes because if he knew he could leave on an extra 4 lbs, he wouldn’t of had to drain himself so much to make weight.

Not making wieght in your first ever main event is NOT a smart move. He should have to give Hughes HALF of his pay at a minimum. If fatty couldn’t make weight on semi-short notice because of the Liddell/Shogun situation, then he shouldn’t have accepted the bout to begin with.

Totally agree VM! Recently he was talking about his last loss – he said he had to drop 25 lbs in a short period of time and that was one of the main reasons he lost. You would think he would learn a lesson.

Fucking disgrace!

by braveheart on Jun 6, 2008 1:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This looks realkly bad for my boy Alves. Proffesionally its really bad. From the point of view of someone who is going to order the event tomorrow it doesnt matter too much because Hughes stepped up and took the fight neway. Not making excuses for Alves and I am not saying that I candone it but At least it wasnt a title fight because then it would go from 5 rounds to 3….That would really suck.

Main event status, and I win away from #1 contender status, Tiago should have made weight. This is bad because Dana hates fighters not making weight (and rightfully so). Hopefully after Tiago brutally Ko’s Hughes in highlite fashion, Dana will forget all about the weigh ins and chalk it up to a cursed event….I dunno though.

ViolentMike or any other mma betters please Help!
Can we still bet this fight?
Will the odds change drastically?

Hey John, I thought you were against steriod cheaters. Alves is a beast, but not a natural one. That’s why steriods are illegal, they give the fighters a HUGE advantage. What a coincidence, Alves can’t make weight, he is FREEKIN HUGE and WAY stronger than he has ever shown before.

by braveheart on Jun 6, 2008 1:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ya, that and he took WAY to much JUICE. Even with the best genetics, you don’t add muscle that fast naturally. They need to test that boy and I don’t mean his math skills.

by Gord on Jun 7, 2008 6:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This is shit, Alves doesn’t have 4 lbs of extra fat, thats 4 lbs of muscle and no % of money can cover that. This fight should be considered a NC and just have a non-scoring match. If the dumbass would have been running laps instead of running his mouth this wouldn’t have been a problem.

Hughes is a class act and I can’t wait for him to crush Alves!

by Arnold on Jun 6, 2008 1:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Here is what Alves said after coming in 4lbs heavy… "Tomorrow night is gonna be a war," said Alves, 174. "You’re gonna see the best ‘Pitbull’ ever and I’m gonna knock him out."

No “I’m sorry” or “I didn’t cut weight right”

by Arnold on Jun 6, 2008 2:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Unbelievable. The worst part is that his weight will help him, even though I now want Hughes to pound him.

The reality is that Dana knows what this means—fewer PPV buys because it further erodes a marginal card. You can count on Dana taking this into account when reviewing contracts.

by BobC on Jun 6, 2008 8:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

AMEN AMEN!! Cant stand that mouth of his!! All talk.. Matt will destroy him and that mouth!!! Does not matter about 4lbs. probably all in his mouth anyhow!! If Matt was man enough to blow off the 4 pounds then none of us should be questioning why or if it affects either fighter.. bottom line whoever wins gets a title shot and don’t think Alves deserve to be a title holder with his ego and attitude!!

If he loses…ouch !!! He is already getting flamed by MMA fans.

That being said, I still think Hughes wins via TKO in RD 2.

by braveheart on Jun 6, 2008 1:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

4 pounds is a lot! When cutting weight a million things can happen. You can “float” 4 pounds in a few hours. ( That essentially means that you worry the weight off). You can just look at a cupcake and gain a pound. Hell, sometimes I weigh 4 pounds heavier after taking a leak. D*mn scales! But to get paid to fight, and have this be the biggest fight of your career, and miss by 4 pounds is inexcusable. Maybe he trained with Lutter?

Lets watch the same guys that defended Carano bash Alves. There is no excuse for his. When it’s your job to make weight, you should make weight. Mania’s job is to post our comments, oh wait, bad example…jk lol

by kevin on Jun 6, 2008 11:42 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree Kevin. I think the more ridiculous thing is if you have trouble dropping, then why are you trying to be in that class anyway. MOVE UP!!

They should make guys that don’t make weight fight in the class above for a few fights.

by grembone on Jun 6, 2008 1:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Alves can’t blame it on a set of sweet D-cups.

haha. True, he can’t. Also, they are sweet.

by naturalshadow on Jun 6, 2008 1:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I have never had to cut weight like some of these guys do for every fight, so I don’t understand completely how you can fail at making weight by such a large quantity. Are these guys lazy or are they just training too heavy for their weight class?

by KneeToTheFace on Jun 6, 2008 11:43 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Sounds fishy to me! Maybe he thinks the heavier weight will help but how in the world do you miss by that much? It’s not just him but he has a whole team that works with him, how can they all be off as well?

by Robert on Jun 6, 2008 11:45 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

You remember the last time someone missed weight against Hughes. He killed them quickly (Riggs). I would assume the same thing is going to happen. I promise you Huhges will take this as a slap in the face.

by darkhorse76 on Jun 6, 2008 11:47 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

yeea thats because he was told to loose the weight so riggs went into the sauna or what ever and tried to loose the weight, which is taxing, why wasn’t ALVES put under the same pressure?!?!?!?

by GORANDY on Jun 6, 2008 11:56 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Great Question, and I DEMAND an answer!!!!

by ViolentMike on Jun 6, 2008 12:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Probably because he’d already shed loads of weight that day. At the end of the day you can only lose so much weight in 1-2 days.

This is a massive mistake from Alves but i’m guessing the state commision would not sanction the fight knowing how much weight he’d already lost and still needed to lose.

Thats how it happens in UK boxing.

by MoonUK on Jun 6, 2008 12:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well Riggs was probably closer to the weight limit and it was for a title shot, so it was worth it for him to try to cut that weight. Four friggin pounds is near impossible to lose in an hour or two, much less doing it in a healthy manner. And it’s not for a championship fight. As unprofessional as it is to miss weight that badly, it’s also unprofessional, and just plain asinine, of any ruling body to ask a competitor to do something unhealthy that could potentially cause him harm.

by Vince on Jun 6, 2008 12:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

unless your name is “Jesse”, then you just go play some ping pong for an hour.

by kitsunex on Jun 6, 2008 1:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Or if your name is Gabe Ruediger you can lie on the floor, cry, and beg people to throw you back into the sauna.

by PW on Jun 6, 2008 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I just thought of the reason why they forced Riggs to go to the sauna…

It was a TITLE FIGHT. If he didn’t make weight, the fight would not be for the title. The Alves fight obviously is not for a title.

by ViolentMike on Jun 6, 2008 2:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Vince-
I agree vince. it is a huge mistake on thiago’s part. and you are correct Riggs was closer to making weight than alves. what i dont understand is why didnt they pressure him like they did to riggs. its unfair i think, riggs missed weight by 1 lb and was dropping all the way from accomodating himself at 205 lbs. he cut alot of weight that day it was very dangerous. im guessing thats why dana didnt get rid of him in the end. but as for alves he just got dont fighting not too long ago. and he took the fight short notice, knowingly of course. i wish they had forced him like they did to lutter and riggs and john fitch.

Losing 4 pounds in an hour or two is VERY EASY! losing 4 MORE pounds in an hour or two can be very hard…

I often weight myself before and after I run, just to keep track of my hydration. I run 6 times a week, and maybe once a week I lose less than 4 pounds, I usually lose 6ish, and most of my runs are only 45 minutes, and I dress very light.

by tm2k on Jun 6, 2008 3:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thats because the fight with Riggs was for the belt and there is no catch weights for a belt. I believe Alves did this with intent knowing that he would not be forced to cutt the weight. Not being a tittle fight and thus walks into the cage tomorrow not as depleted as Hughes giving him an edge. If you think it is not fare to make that judgement…what about his previous use of steroids and suspension after his fight with DeSouza.

by SUPER CAL on Jun 6, 2008 2:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thiago Alves was suspended for using diuretics not steroids.

by Jay on Jun 6, 2008 9:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This to me is inexcusible. On this season of TUF a contested was 17 pounds overweight that first day and they cut it and made weight. That was one days notice!! Thiago had been at a training camp for this fight so there to me is no valid reason to miss weight. None. Now if a guy has one days notice and misses, I can forgive that, but not a guy who’s had a training camp to prepare.

I like Thiago as a fighter, but I’m beginning to not like Thiago the man. First he gets suspended for a banned Diuretic and now this. I’m starting to question his professionalism.

by braveheart on Jun 6, 2008 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You got that right. He just started his next cycle after Karo and then Dana phoned him up to fight Hughes on short notice. Seroid effects last for weeks after you stop taking them. It’s pretty hard to lose weight when your body is full of a substance that adds weight.

by Gord on Jun 7, 2008 7:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

How much notice did he have for this fight? I thought it was like 5 weeks. that should be plenty of time to make weight.

by Mike C. on Jun 6, 2008 11:48 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

he missed weight for a competitive advantage. He knows Matt Hughes isn’t going to not fight, and the UFC isn’t going to cancel the main event. All you guys that have been swinging from alves nuts now see how confident he really is! If you defended Gina for not making weight, and made every last excuse, start making them for this guy too, you can’t have it both ways. First and foremost these people are fighters, this is inexcusable and after Hughes demolishes him, not making weight will never cross his mind again!

by kevin on Jun 6, 2008 11:51 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

by Jesse G on Jun 6, 2008 1:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree, I think he did it as a competitive advantage. Everyone knows Hughes is a gamer…He took the Riggs fight when he didn’t make weight, took the GSP fight on short notice (From a planning perspective), and he knew that he wouldn’t let a main event get cancelled the day before.

I think it’s part of the strategy and the size of the miss is inexcusable.

because Hughes isn’t even worried. I don’t like Hughes, but he is a true warrior. He knows this douche bag isn’t even in his league, and knows he’ll be pounding on him within minutes! To compare this to elite just shows what a dumb fuck you are. They had 3 questionable stoppages, and as a matter of fact, I was all over the bitch when she didn’t make weight!

by kevin on Jun 6, 2008 11:58 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I couldn’t agree more with Kevin, except I like Hughes. I had him picked to win this fight mainly because I can’t stand Alves running him mouth. Hughes is going to knock Alves down to WEC after he pounds on him and still gives up 4 lbs. Alves really disrespected Hughes leading up to the fight and now this is icing on the cake.

by Arnold on Jun 6, 2008 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The problem is most guys come in a few pounds heavy a week out and then cut the final pounds a day or two before the fight. Usually they are cutting atr least two pounds on the day of weigh ins. This is something that could easily happen if he swallowed water in the shower, cheated and drank when he was not supposed too…who knows…there are a million ways to miss your weight. Sometimes people’s bodies react differently after flights and maybe he was just trying to shed the weight and it would not come off…I have had that happen to me before.

by StayDown on Jun 6, 2008 11:54 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Missing weight for the biggest fight of your life means a few things)

1) You’re not ready for the big leagues
2) You are irresonsible
3) You do not train like you are supposed to
4) You do not care as much as you should
4) Matt Hughes is going to beat that ass!

by StayDown on Jun 6, 2008 1:07 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

4 pounds is a half gallon. We are not talking about small amounts of water here…

Yes, I know water can really affect your weight… I did a 200 mile relay race with 5 friends last summer, my total distance ran was 42 miles in 6 stages in less than 24 hours. I went in weighing 165, I came out under 145; I couldn’t drink as fast as I was sweating. 1 day later I was over 160 again. The only way to gain and lose that fast is water.

by tm2k on Jun 6, 2008 3:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree VM, but you missed one. You started your next steroid cycle thinking you had lots of time and then Dana calls you to fight on short notice so you can’t lose the 20lbs of mass you put on,because your body is full of juice.

by Gord on Jun 7, 2008 7:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That makes sense. He probably overestimated his ability to lose weight, busted his ass to lose it and could not. This would explain why they didn’t give him a chance to lose it.

We do use stone, there is 14 pounds to a stone. We don’t do decimal points with stones, thats metric.

This is great news. Alves just blew his chances. First he talks about how Karo is tougher than Hughes which leads me to believe he is grossly under training for Hughes. Then this weight issue comes in which solidifies my thoughts. He is going to be tired from trying to cut and it’ll affect him. That was Riggs problem, he we gassed during the fight with Hughes. Thiago is not showing the dicipline it takes to be a champ. He isn’t ready to hang with the top 5 yet.

by Smokes on Jun 6, 2008 12:00 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He isn’t going to have to cut any I don’t think, it will be a catchweight fight. However, Alves was given a main event fight and he blew it. Dana wasn’t pleased when Lutter missed weight and won’t be pleased now. Even a win here for Alves and he won’t climb up the ladder to a title shot. This hurts Alves bad. What a moron! Why would he miss so badly? Maybe too much South Beach partying.

by Jason on Jun 6, 2008 12:11 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Alves blew his chances of climbing up the ladder. What a piece of Lutter!!! This shows lack of respect and professionalism. He must not be taking Hughes seriously, big mistake for him. It probably will not help him tomorrow as he may not have the fan base. At least he isn’t going to be cutting weight.

by Jason on Jun 6, 2008 12:13 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Hughes is going to kill him now. Not making weight by that amount is a lack of respect for yourself and your opponent. These guys are professional athletes.

Perhaps its the card that has been doomed from the start.

WAR BISPING.

that sounds like he didn’t even try to cut weight which is sort of fishy. It looks to me like he is trying to get an advantage ,now I really want hughes to smash him .Matt Hughes is coming in with a big disadvantage,by just having to cut the last week and thiago didn’t odviously

by Tony on Jun 6, 2008 12:24 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yes it is a huge blunder upon Alves’s part, but to say it has blew his chances of climbing up the latter is going abit over board. Having had to cut weight myself, it is a very difficult thing to do. There are many things you have to consider when cutting weight. I think for Alves since they did declare the weight at a catch weight, I’m assuming that that was done before the actual weigh-in. Which could mean that cutting anymore weight for Alves could be dangerous to his health. I think he did come in shape but just that he’s on the heavy side because of the increase in muscle. It is a sign of disrespect and lack of professionalism, however, he’s human! People make mistakes, but its up to others to learn fromt he mistakes they have made.

by Chad Donald on Jun 6, 2008 12:29 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

it’s hard to do, but it’s his job. He definitely blew his shot!

by kevin on Jun 6, 2008 12:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Chad-

Its going to be hard to convince the keyboard warriors that Alves deserves to be forgiven for messing up.

Hopefully Alves will give a legitimate reason as to why…

by OJR on Jun 6, 2008 12:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’ll give his reason, he couldn’t use the diuretics that he’s gotten caught using in the past. how’s that. or that he’s too big, he should be a MW, or how bout he knew Hughes would take the fight, and wanted to not be drained, so he’d have a chance. any of these reasons float your boat? cause I got more

by kevin on Jun 6, 2008 12:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I would go with reason number 1# but as I posted earlier let’s wait and see what Alves says.

Either way, I had Hughes winning this so in a sense its really a moot point. For me anyway…

by OJR on Jun 6, 2008 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Has he heard of Ex- Lax? We used to use that to make weight.

Chefdaddy:
Kevin said: “he couldn’t use the diuretics that he’s gotten caught using in the past.”

You do know that Ex-Lax is a diuretic, right?

by tm2k on Jun 6, 2008 4:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

sorry tm2k, didn’t know you could test positive for Ex-Lax. lol. It was just a lame joke on my part. What I implied and didn’t actually say is that I can’t believe a pro didn’t do everything possible to make weight, when fighters (in my case, wrestlers) do it all the time. I DO NOT condone this, very unhealthy and leaves you weak. Just a joke, bro.

by chefdaddy on Jun 7, 2008 2:56 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

They wouldn’t have put it at a catch before the actual weigh-in. If Thiago said he couldn’t make weight before hand they would have told him he has an hour to get it off before weigh-ins. Also cutting is not hard to do when you do it right. When you have a months notice to cut weight you cut the majority of it off about 2 weeks in advanced. After that you cut off the 10 to 15 pounds in the next week and the week before you have to fight you get rid of the other of a few pounds until the day before or the day of. Then thats when you lose a good 2 to 3 pounds of water weight so you can make weight. Alves had time, he was talking bad about Hughes, and then said his conditioning was at its finest. I don’t think labeling people keyboard warriors is an accurate statement here. Alves brought all of this upon himself and people don’t like how much disrespect it shows on his part.

by Smokes on Jun 6, 2008 3:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Why can’t Alves lose 3 pounds in 1 hour? I’ve known guys that have lost more before weigh in.

by bostonmmajunkie on Jun 6, 2008 12:32 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

2 things: Alves=WTF!!! AND Vera=205PLEASE! (Giving up 20-30 lbs per fight is retarded an he’ll always come up short against the top teer fighters at HVWT, drop to 205 dude, get tht belt, then we’ll talk about you fighting the gigantors of the industry)

danan should have foreced alves to come back in an hour after cutting he only needed to lose 3 lbs!!!!!!
DANA is a JErk and didn’t want to wait

by GORANDY on Jun 6, 2008 12:44 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Dude its not Dana’s fault for everything bad that happens in the MMA universe.

If Alves is overweight it is Alves fault NOT dana’s.

The catch weigh thingy will have been organised before the weigh ins.

Do you think Alves was suprised when he stepped on the scales and was overweight? NO!

Do you think that Alves camp spoke to the UFC before weigh ins and said Alves can’t make weigh. Yes!

by MoonUK on Jun 6, 2008 12:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hypothetical: If Hughes originally came in at the four pounds over it would give him a huge advantage. Love him, or hate him, Hughes is a true fighter at heart. He is also the “anti Kimbo Slice” fighter. As a fan you gotta respect that

by Jrandolph on Jun 6, 2008 12:53 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

True. I don’t think anyone has ever accused Hughes of passing on a fight. In reality, it would have been smart to wait for Serra to heal up instead of fighting GSP, but Hughes is a fighter. You have to respect that.

by naturalshadow on Jun 6, 2008 2:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

disappointed, i really thought thiago could really challenge hughes, now although i don’t like hughes i’m kinda pulling for him, but it’d be better for the WW division if thiago won, but do you reward him for winning but not cutting the weight, the colonic guy (rudiger?) came closer to making weight than thiago.
On a seperate note brandon vera @228 is small, can you imagine if he was matched up against lesnar, talk about a overmatch. I’d like to see vera fight wanderlei, rampage, liddell, any of those LWs, i think would be entertaining, i just don’t think vera is big enough if he had to fight the “true” heavyweights.

by creagach on Jun 6, 2008 12:57 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He didn’t look too bad against Timmy considering the broken hand… He dominated Mir, and Mir is around 250… Also Randy weighs about 230, right?

I have heard that Brock cuts weight to make 265. Anyone know how much?

by tm2k on Jun 6, 2008 4:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Man. I think Gary Shaw put the hex on UFC 85. Injury after injury after replacements…now this?!

Hughes is a game fighter. I’ll let him talk all the smack he wants. He’s a true champ. If Thiago wins, I don’t think he deserves a title shot.

And I agree with you Adam G. I’m a Brandon Vera fan. But, I think its going to take him getting beat down by a massive heavy weight for him to consider 205. Since his introduction, he’s been calling out Chuck Liddell left and right. Drop to 205 and let Joe Silva make it happen.

by TabascoSAUCE on Jun 6, 2008 1:01 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Well, that just changed my mind. I hope Hughes buries him now. Unacceptable.

by Irish on Jun 6, 2008 1:22 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

it was obviously pre arranged with Hughes, ufc & governing body.

174 was probably the lowest he could safely manage.

by MoonUK on Jun 6, 2008 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Alves has not completely blown his shot, he just won’t get the automatic shot if he beats Hughes.
-Side note, A couple people here have referenced Diesel Riggs. Whatever happened to that guy? I remember Salaverry and Hughes beat him, haven’t seen or heard much of anything since then. Anyone know where he fights now?

by efisher on Jun 6, 2008 1:23 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I’ve never liked matt hughes but ever since he agreed to fight GSP when he didn’t have to, and now him agreeing to fight this fight has changed my mind about Hughes. I hope he destroys this irresponsible fool

I’m reading alot of posts speculating the excuses Thiago may have. THERE IS NO EXCUSE. I cant wait for Hughes to punish him, he does not like to be disrespected. oh and stop blaming Dana for everything, i like the fact that this may just be the motivation Hughes needs to destroy Alves.

by Smokes on Jun 6, 2008 3:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Where you only see the main event, I’m talking about the Fight Card. I would rather see the Baroni/Villasenor fight than the Bisping/Day fight, the Carano/Young fight over the Kampmann/Rivera fight, and the Lawler/Smith fight over the Swick/Davis fight. Call me crazy?

And now that Alves ate himself out of the #1 contender spot (win or lose), Yes, I would rather see the progress of interesting character like Kimbo over an aging and fading Hughes. And now you can call me crazy.

by ( (Adam G) ) on Jun 6, 2008 2:15 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

My guess is that this was more of a “choice” than an accident. He Wanted to be bigger, stronger, bulked up and 4 lbs is the price to pay. Alves doesn’t have much fat. My guess is that this presents more problems for hughes. Alves will not be dehydrated, he’ll be heavier and stronger (than he would be if he HAD to lose the extra 3lbs). I just hope he doesn’t say a WORD about how in shape he was or how he could go the “distance” with his fight with hughes because EVERYONE knows that you are not the same fighter if you have to dehydrate yourself in 1-2 days in order to lose 3 MORE pounds. I hope hughes wins.

by Woodie on Jun 6, 2008 2:24 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Im not a hughes fan but i kinda feel bad for him cutting weight for nothing. He looks really drained in that pic, hopefully hughes can gather his strength because tomorrow Alves will be stepping into the octagon @ 190.

i’ve never had to cut weight so i don’t know, but does four ponds really make that big of a difference. like i can lift that weight with my dick. i know he should still weight 170 for the weigh ins but i was just wondering how much difference it makes in a fight

by shinbob on Jun 6, 2008 4:45 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

it doesn’t necessarily make a difference in the fight because they both will gain back alot of weight by tommorow. my bet is that hughes cut more weight and will weigh more than alves tommorow. the big deal is that it is disrespectfull to not meet the requirements set in order to fight. it looks unprofessional too. i remember lutter getting silva very upset but that was for the title.

yes Thiago never made weight by like 4 pounds some what not like he had a busted up ankle like a fews before the fight? even so Hughes by fight time was just as heavy as thiago or heavy. Plus Thiago still had a busted ankle and about Thiago taking steroids , look at GSP just cause your in good shape doesn’t mean your “juiced”
