MMA Quick Quote: Donald Trump to pursue Tito Ortiz for Affliction MMA

"I'm going to ask Tito to come on board [with Affliction MMA]."
-- Affliction MMA investor, Donald trump, today confirmed the obvious during a press conference at Trump Tower in New York, N.Y. -- he's going to pursue former UFC champion Tito Ortiz to come on board with his new promotion. Ortiz was a contestant on the most recent season of Trump's "The Apprentice" and the two appear to have forged a professional friendship as a result of the experience. Even though Ortiz has expressed a desire to create his own mixed martial arts promotion, if he does sign with Affliction MMA there are some nice fights that could be there such as Renato "Babalu" Sobral, Antonio Rogerio Nogueira, Vitor Belfort (if he competes at 205) -- even Matt Lindland.

saw this coming a mile away. affliction has potential to be very huge. i know paying fighters is great, but overpaying right away could be bad.

That’s true, but what I want to know is if he confirmed Arlovski’s signing and if any details of the contract were disclosed. Has AA oficially signed or not? Come on Jesse, if you have news about the press conference, why is the only scoop about Tito?

Yes, he is confirmed. He will fight Rothwell on the 19th. Now get off my nuts I’m trying to type over here.

Guarantee we see at least one Trump reaction close-up per fight during the broadcasting. He will make sure its a stipulation in their contract.

He might try to get a fight against Trump in his contract too. He might actually show up for that one.

REALLY!! like I said yesterday, Trump can only put so much money into this! He’s 1st and foremost a business man! The salaries they are paying with reletively no name recognition isn’t going to get ppv buys. Besides hardcore fans, Fedor is unknown, and Timmy is not liked. This will do 50,000 ppv’s tops! It’s too bad, but I predict a not so bright future for affliction!

With Trump backing this and his marketing staff…he will turn average to great. Maybe not in the first year…but look out UFC.
by BFD on Jun 5, 2008 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
agreed, but paying 5 or 6 million out and making half that isn’’t trumps style! No good businessman would do that. I hope it does well, but look at what the fighters are making in their first promotion. who is the biggest name on the card? Don’t say Fedor, no one knows who he is! thats just me keepin it real!
by kevin on Jun 5, 2008 1:33 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree with you on the Fedor thing…but with the right marketing he could become an Icon, beside in the hardcore MMA fans eyes. I think Trump sees big risk, but the reward could be worth the risk…the US is in a craze over MMA I take that back the world. UFC is the big dog on the block but are making a few mistakes along the way. I don’t think Trump wants a little part of the pie, I think he wants the whole thing. He’s going to shake things up in over the next couple of years. He know what tito’s all about "Money" and if he starts paying his fights top money others will follow.
by BFD on Jun 5, 2008 1:47 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Fedor IS the biggest name on the card. newbies dont know who he is. MMA fans fear him. He is also making the most money on the card. Oh Kevin, you have had some credible posts in the past. This one makes me want to eat my own soul.
by Javster on Jun 5, 2008 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
All he is saying is Fedor, is not as well-known as for say chuck, Ready, Tito, Page…in the average fans eyes. Which I agree 100% with Kevin
by BFD on Jun 5, 2008 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
hey javstar, go check out how many ppv’s fedor’s name has sold in the past. this just goes to show your ignorance. People who thought elite put on an incredible show saturday have no idea who Fedor is. Yes, the 500 guys on this site no, and only half of us will pay for the show. this show (unfortunately) will sell 10% of ppv’s that the smallest ufc has sold. sad but true!

Ha HA It’ all good Javster. It’s just a difference of opinion. I still believe (know HA HA) that Fedor is not as popular and marketed like Chuck or Page. Yes he is top 2 fighter in the world, and is more popular over seas then in the US but the typical mma fan, doesn’t know much about him.

by truemma on Jun 5, 2008 9:17 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think the best way to compete with the UFC is to have a roster mix of fighters that are popular in the US, as well as legit talent fighters. Put the name fighters (i.e. Kimbo, Coleman) on the undercard and then have talent fighters in main events.
by Pat on Jun 5, 2008 1:34 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
But Kimbo/coleman would want big $$$$, which would mean the talent fighters would want bigger $$$$, and you end up with the problem UFC got by bringing in fighters like Lesnar.

This is exactly what I was saying when affliction first announced. They may have some backers with big money, but the reason these guys have big money is cos they do not throw it away.
Why have they brought Trump in at this late stage? I think this may just be a PR stunt to get some headlines, surely all the money side would have been sorted ages ago?

Kevin, I couldn’t agree more. Look at BoDog, they were backed by Calvin Ayer who is a billionair, yet they failed. Guys like Trump and Ayer are rich because they aren’t idiots, and they will not keep throwing their money in these promotions unless they turn a profit. With the amount of money they are spending on salaries, marketing and venue (don’t they have some band opening for them as well?)there is just no way they will get the PPV numbers they will require to continue as a promotion. I’m looking forward to this card BIG time, but I wouldn’t be surprised if they aren’t around by 2009.

This is the best mma site around but honestly, to say there are some great matches for Tito- he hasn’t done anything significant in years.
Babalu’s most impressive moment was losing to Chuck the second time and then getting beat by sausage tits lambert! Little Nog beat Hendo 3 years ago- I guess that’s kinda cool but still not much recently.
And then there’s Vitor, any real fight since his lucky cut over Randy has been a loss.
Honestly, Tito has lost it and these are all second tier LW’s, to say they are good match ups is just false.
Affliction definitely will have it’s one bigger than Jesus Heavyweight pay per view that will rock, but after that it will just be second class poop with UFC rejects, especially if Timmy beats Fedor- then what, boring Timmy fights forever?
by TheDude on Jun 5, 2008 1:26 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
i have wanted to see tito fight babalu for a long time! i think everyone wanted them to fight when they were both in the ufc, i am actually suprised that it never happned because it is a dream matchup! that fight alone would sell ! there is possibly a tito vs vitor 2? it sold the first time! affliction WILL sell i just dont see it being as huge as ufc!

are you really a fan of mma or are you a fan of names? tito is an excellent fighter who beat all of the who’s who in the division for three and a half years! babalu is a no joke submission specialist who has taken out alot of guys! and you say babalu was most impressive when getting knocked out by chuck! look at his fights! he has taken out real competitors! plus chuck is top 2 lhw in the world i most peoples mind! i never said tito and babalu were fighting for best p4p lhw position but the fight is a good mma fight! two competitors that actually try to make a great showing and win a fight at whatever means possible!
by Winner by Strikes! on Jun 5, 2008 2:41 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Bro, good fights are fights that bring you closer to fighting the best in the world. Both these guys have proven that they are not anymore and most likely never will be again.
Tito will drag him down and try GnP, Babalu will work for submissions while getting back up, there will be virtually no stand up fighting, and most will fall asleep by the end of round one.
Also, just to clarify, a good ground fight is awesome but this will not be, Tito will be all huggy and Babalu will be all trying to escape.
And another thing, Tito will claim to be in great shape before the fight and then when he loses(if he loses instead of dragging out a boring decision) his back will hurt leading up to the fight.
To answer your first question, no I am not a fan of names, such as Babalu and Tito, hippocrate.

Mania, STOP STEALING ALL OUR MONEY! lol, what the hell is that dude talking about?
I predict Affliction will become a success and it will last. Its no secret that new mma promotion dont really profit at First, Trump is no fool, his team has researched it and I doubt he is expecting to make a big profit off his 1st show….As long as he stays with it, it will be a HUGE success no later then its fourth show.
I hate Tito ortiz, but it will be great if he signs with affliction because he is a name that the casula fans will recognize. Even if they only watch the events because of Tito, it will open their eyes to the real fighters on the Affliction card, making the promotion a future success!
U forget, Casual fans KNOW exactly who Arlovski is…He will draw a crowd as well of casual fans.
Affliction is not going anywhere. HOw can people hate on what they are trying to do? Unlike EliteXC, they are putting on a show stacked with REAL top Notch mma fighters….After all they got half of the top 10 heavyweights in the world fighting on the same card..
I really hope you guys all support Affliction instead of just hating on it like my pesamistic friend Kevin!

I dunno, I am just sick of the haters trying to tell me how much Affliction will fail, when they havent even put out a show yet.
Everyone should be praying for Affliction to succeed because unlike EliteXC, they are stacked with true MMA top level fighters, and they are having them all fight on the same card.

I know that 95% of the guys on this site that think affliction will hope that they are wrong.

not hating john, being realistic. Fedor isn’t known, and a month out isn’t being marketed. He doesn’t speak english and hasn’t fought a worth while fight in years. I’m excited for this card, but the casual fan (not the 200 guys on mania that will buy it) only no timmy (and hate him) and arlovski (who has been dancing ever since he got ko’d) sorry if the truth hurts!
by kevin on Jun 5, 2008 2:04 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I just gotta back AA up, everybody talks bad about him because he didn’t finish two fights in impressive style. Three fights since losing to Tim ( a decision that could have went either way) and he’s won them all. The guy is going to beat big Ben and hopefully affliction pits him against the winner of Fedor Sylvia.
by Smokes on Jun 5, 2008 2:48 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
thats the other thing, with the money being paid, all there going to do is have the winners fight the winners and losers fight each other. Who else can they or will they sign before the “round robin” format gets boring?
by kevin on Jun 5, 2008 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I feel ya Kevin but this is a high risk manuever by Affliction. Their primary hope is that the Sylvia Fedor fight ignites Fedor in the States. After that any fight Fedor could possibly have would be pretty big. Like an AA or Randy fight. They are risking a lot by doing this because your right the round robin has to end after 2 or 3 cards at best. But I think they are hoping to get some more talent by showing they pay large amounts of money and present the best possible cards. I have to say this affliction card IMO beats any UFC card held this year. but we have to see how it pans out to knwo for sure. But to further state my point, who makes the payment details public before the card is even done.

What if Tito Ortiz was a good stand up fighter, what if Sherk had taken Penn down, what if Randy was still with the UFC, what if GSP had beaten Hughes the first time they fought, what if Hendo moves down. What if Sylvia fought to kill instead of to just win. Too many what if’s to care about. What we need to worry about is who the winner is facing next and don’t say Randy cause I don’t see it happening but then again maybe affliction will pay Randy 1 mil plus and Fedor one mil plus cause Randy can’t be the second highest paid in an org. AA for HWC

I think Big Tim will give Fedor fits. Like him or not, Tim has a huge reach advantage and very powerful strikes. And even though he moves like a big, lumbering oaf, Tim actually has very fast hands. And don’t tell me about that 7-foot Korean Fedor just beat. That guy was a carnival act. Tim is a 2-time UFC champ. Big difference.

doesnt randy already have ties in with affliction because of the whole clothing thing? isnt xtreme couture and affliction partners?

First off for the Randy/Fedor to be a classic (if it happens) Fedor needs to beat Tim – I asked Couture that if Tim wins, will the fight still be as attractive to him and he said in a round about way – no. From speaking with Couture it seems like HDNet is trying to work something out with Affliction for a future event. “If anyone has the money to get it (the Fedor fight) done, its’ Mark Cuban” – were along the lines of his wording…cheers

I think thats their secret weapon that they’l pull it out soon. Randy is as popular as hell, and Tito, love him or hate him, always sells fights. This truely has great potential and I think by far the most serious threat presented to the UFC by far. We’ll just have to wait and see. Yes indeed, money and fame talks, if Dana could build the UFC when it was going broke maybe Trump too can work some magic for the fans. MMA WILL DOMINATE THE WORLD!!!!!

Once they get Couture (which I see happing in November) Affliction is going to be money. I hope the top UFC fighters realize they have been exploited and leave. I hate Dana White. He always brags about building up the sport but in actuality he’s ruining it. Go Trump!
by Spitforce on Jun 5, 2008 3:06 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
If you don’t mind man, could you explain how Dana is ruining the sport? No beef I just always see people post that and I’d like to know if its a legit post or if they just hate because Dana doesn’t like certain fighters, kinda like we don’t like certain people you should be fair to them but man they are really annoying and you just don’t want to give them the time of day.

I second that. I understand people find Dana annoying because of how he talks about certain fighters, but to say he’s bad for the sport – hell, the sport is in the position it’s in today in large part due to the efforts of Dana White.

BOXERS GET PAID MAD MONEY—$20Million per fight(Mayweather)&(Tyson).
So paying $6million for the whole fight is’nt shit.Affliction is going to take out UFC a few years from now. The fighters go where the money is and fans follow the fighters.
by GSP SUCKA on Jun 5, 2008 3:20 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Its true but I don’t like Randy or Ortiz anymore. Their complaints do not seem legit after you find out how much their contracts are paying them. I don’t agree with a boxer making 20 Mil or a NFL player making 14 Mil, its such a huge amount that it doesn’t make sense. There are plenty of other people or area’s that are much more deserving but since they are entertainers they deserve huge amounts of money. The writers were on stike for a 5 cent raise, Tito is asking for more than 250k per fight just to fight, not even to win. No dude not right, if your going to get paid a huge amount of money you should have to fear losing, because now it has become a profession or career and not a sport, its no longer competition but just a pay day. Lame dude lame

Alright that sounded a little harsh, I don’t like Tito but I do like Randy. I was just extremely disapointed when he pulled that move. He hasn’t done much to redeem himself so I suppose I really don’t care what happens to him. He only has a few more fights left like Hughes, but Hughes is fighting whoever is put in front of him and Randy is trying to claim he is the best HW in the world after two fights. Only one of which was legit. For people who think Hughes is cocky, man thats pushing it. Randy is usually a stand up guy, he just made a bull headed move here. Maybe it’ll work out for the best and he’ll get his shot against Fedor when Fedor puts Sylvia to sleep. I will pay to see Fedor beat on Randy and put him back in his place.

How much do you think Trump is going to pay Tito? If (and when) Fedor beats Tim Sylvia, then look for Trump to help fascilitate Couture getting out of flux asap and fighting Fedor in December. If Fedor loses (highly unlikely), it will be interesting to see if Couture retires or goes back to the UFC to fight Nog.

I think you guys a re missing a huge point to this whole debate. The only reason Fedor isn’t well know and the UFc is the number one spot is due to contract issues. Once the UFc gets ahold of a fighter they never let go (might as well call the them the death row records fo MMA) and Fedor could never fight well known US guy because the UFC wouldn’t and WON’T let there guys fights someone who they know will loss to. That would make them look bad and give business to another company. Thats the problem with MMA right now. To many companies, nobody wants there fighter to lose to a fighter they don’t control. Great business but bad for us as the fan. IS Fador the best…. I really havn’t seen him in a war yet. They say he is but i want to watch it for myself. Add Urijah Faber to the fight card and I’ll pay for it twice.
