Pat, I didn’t sense any sarcasm saying my wife and I should open a gym, so I’ll respond. Yes I have a little money, but any business man will tell you what I don’t have, name recognition. What would I say, Kevin’s gym…Kevin, blogger on mmamania. That, and that I’m not and never claimed to be good enough to coach. I know my shit when it comes to mma, and my wife has trained extensively with arguably the best BJJ coach in the world, but that doesn’t equate to opening a gym. Thanks though!

Oh ok, that’s cool. Thanks for the response.

by Pat on Jun 3, 2008 3:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

were you being serious?? or busting my balls?

by kevin on Jun 3, 2008 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Where can I read this scuffle?

by ViolentMike on Jun 3, 2008 4:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No, your balls are safe.

Does your wife train at Caesar Gracie’s? Gi, no-gi, or both?

by Pat on Jun 3, 2008 5:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

GI, and she trained up to blue belt 10 years ago. She was only woman there, and was in tournies with men! She actually went to BJ’s first tournament with him in LA! (he was underage at the time)

by kevin on Jun 3, 2008 5:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

no scuffle mike, pat said that he thinks that since my wife and I train and are in shape and have some money, we should open a gym. I’m out of shape and haven’t trained in years (but can still kick ass). I just didn’t know if he was kidding, but I got to admit, I do know what I’m talking about!! lol

Was that the tourney where BJ got into a fight?! lol

Ready to make my picks for the weekend. This will be a very tough event to wager on, so I will be betting a lot smaller then I usually do. Many of these fights are toss ups so I am not my usual confident self. Here we go:

Tiago Alves TKO: simular to Karo fight Hughes will EAT a Big Knee, which will be the beginning of the end

WErdum via decision: I LOVE Vera, and will be rooting for him but I cant pick him to win because I have never seen him beat a good heavyweight. I hope he does, we all know the division needs it, but until I see it, I cant pick against Werdum, who is a proven Heavyweight

Bisping 3rd round TKO: Bisping seems to be at home at 185 lbs, and he is only going to look more comfortable in his second fight now that he is more adjusted to the weight cut. Doomsday is becoming a fan favorite quickly…I am thinking that Bisping Knows that he is much better in this division, his confidence will show, and he will eventually KO Doomsday, late in the fight, after a very competitive hard fought battle.

Marcus Davis via 1st round KO! Easiest pick of the night!

and I cant pick against my boy, THales Leites…2nd round Submission (arm triangle)

What about Vera beating Mir? Mir was a Heavyweight champion.

by xxbaxx816 on Jun 3, 2008 6:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think the argument is that Mir was still not in top form after his motercycle accident. I think Mir was probably 90%, Vera is just that much better on the feet.

John: Did you hear Werdum say he was going to keep the fight on the feet? He has that Chute Box attitude now. That is a huge mistake on his part, have to go with Vera… And Alves, I think me and you are alone on that one. Can’t wait to see Hughes get KTFO!

by bnf on Jun 3, 2008 6:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Nothing is more fun to watch then seeing Hughes’s lights go out, thats for Sure. I like the Chute Box attitude from Werdum, hopefully he isnt too cocky with it because Vera is Proven to be very solid standing.

The Mir argument is exactly why I do not consider it a legit HW win for Vera. If Vera cant beat Werdum, he has to start cutting weight and drop down to 205

by john on Jun 3, 2008 6:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

BNF: I am going with Alves and I will lay some cash on him. If he is to beat Hughes, Leg Kicks Early on will be crucial. He has to weaken Hughes legs, making his takedown less effective. After he gets Matt’s attention with the leg kicks, let the Muy Tai flow, and Hughes will have no answer for it….eventually I see a well timed knee Blasting Hughes on the chin while attempting a takedown.

by john on Jun 3, 2008 6:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I have to disagree. Alves is going to be taken down and hughes is going to keep him there.

Hughes by armbar 2nd round

Just curious kevin, who would that arguable best coach be? not trying to break balls or anything, just curious. I myself LOVE bjj and I love it more every time I roll, but one thing I have noticed is that there are LOTS of amazing bjj coaches around the world. So I was just wondering =)

Rolling Stone has a very insightful article up about UFC President Dana White. Below is an interesting excerpt from their online teaser. You can pick up the full June 12, 2008 issue in stores now.

Tim Sylvia told White to get ready, “when I win tonight, we’re going to break open the bank.” Dana White responded with the following:
See, this is the one part of the business I fucking hate. Everybody wants more money, they want it now. And then all these fighters are like, ’We’re the superstars, not the UFC! It should all be about us.’ You dumb motherfuckers. You don’t know what you’re fucking with. I’m a promoter. And a lot of this shit is built with smoke and mirrors. When Lorenzo and I first got into this, we were like two fucking idiots. ‘This is going to be so much fun! We’re going to put on big fights! We care about the fighters! We’re going to make them millionaires! We’ll all be friends! It’ll be so great!’ But this is the way it goes. And right now this is my fucking life. I don’t know how much longer I can take it, I just don’t know. Oh, I still have fun. I’m excited for these guys to come out and fight. I still get goose bumps. And no, I don’t regret anything that I’ve said or done, because everything has gotten me right where I am. I could be parking your car or picking up your bag at the hotel. The thing about me, seriously, I’m high on life man. I love life. And I love what I do.

Dana has done a lot for the sport, and we don’t know the behind the scenes shit, but I actually kinda feel for him!!

Mania..Just so you know setanta sports TV channel in the UK is not freeview. Its a monthly subscription channel.

Are you sure they’ll be streaming this for free?

by MoonUK on Jun 3, 2008 4:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I was wondering if you had noticed on setanta’s website it says:

“Then, beginning with UFC 86: Jackson v Griffin, Setanta Sports 1 becomes the Exclusive home for ALL of the UFC’s supercards including UFC Fight Nights from both sides of the Atlantic and Ultimate Fighter Finale’s – all Live and Exclusive!”

Did you know they were going to have Fight nights in the UK?

by MoonUK on Jun 3, 2008 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yep its streaming on the web bro! subscriptions will get you the fights but the weight ins will be on the web for free

by the heat on Jun 3, 2008 5:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Setanta Sports came out of nowhere and now has UFC and most of the premiership games. I remember when it started it had schools rugby on it and I could watch my friends play. Weird.

Lets go Hughes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by RiverHorror on Jun 3, 2008 3:16 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Every time I see that pic of Alves, I can’t help but think of young Vitor.

by Pat on Jun 3, 2008 3:44 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, look at those pictures. Hughes looks like a douche and Alves looks like a killer. Guess who I will be betting on.

by bnf on Jun 3, 2008 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

LOL. While watching the WEC event, they kept putting the UFC 85 banner up on the bottom left of the screen. They make Matt Hughes and his head about 3 times the size of Alvez’s. LOL. Anyone else notice?

by ViolentMike on Jun 3, 2008 4:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I saw that… And I think Mania picks bad pictures of guys he doesn’t like just to be a dick… I love it!

Hughes looks like a crackhead in this pic!

sorry kids…Hughes is gonna take this one

and “jimmy_dean”, when was the last time you saw a crackhead flexing for a prefight pose down? i bet never…

Winners for this Saturday:

I agree with all your picks except quick. The Irish hand grenade is going to put his lights out.

by truemma on Jun 3, 2008 10:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hughes is gonna get knocked out! Mark my words WADZ and if Thiago doesn’t get the KO it will be a TKO. I learned my lesson betting against Alves in the Karo fight.

by jimmy_dean on Jun 4, 2008 1:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh yeah and WADZ, you better do some research before you count Werdum out against Vera. I agree with all of your picks except for Hughes and Vera.

Hughes by GnP. TKO Rd 2.

by OJR on Jun 3, 2008 4:02 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I cant see Alves winning this, he had trouble dealing with the strength and wrestling of Karo but got a lucky knee in there, you guys think hell be able to deal with Matt Hughes’ wrestling?

No way.

I’m in no way a Matt Hughes fan, as a matter of fact I think he’s a pompous douche bag, that said, he will pound out a victory! I will be watching after I go to alcatraz!!

by kevin on Jun 3, 2008 4:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Enjoy Alcatraz it is one of the coolest places I have ever been.

This fight is tough to call but I have to go with Hughes. I am a little impartial though because he is a local boy. Can’t wait for this one.

Kevin, spending your Birthday at Alcatraz is cool, I on the other hand will be blowing out Birthday candles at my local friendly neighborhood HOOTERS!!! Cheers, Happy Birthday!

went to hooters saturday, here in cali it was awful. we used to go in florida all the time, I don’t know what they did, but it was terrible!

Kevin, I am sure you would have enjoyed your Hooters experience a lot more if they were showing a UFC card!

maybe, I usually love the wings, even they sucked. the girls are always a mixed bag…usually chicks that can’t be strippers

I am a hughes fan but I know he can be a dick at times in real life. Although if i had his record and legacy I would probably think highly of myself too. That aside, if you can get past his personality, the guy is just amazing. I want to see him finish his career strong, and taking this fight just shows one thing above all others about hughes, he just LOVES to fight, its in his blood.

by MMAsubb on Jun 3, 2008 4:27 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I am going with Hughes on this one. Hughes’ experience and strength will be the deciding factor.

by Jason on Jun 3, 2008 5:18 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

matt hughes loves to fight he has the fighting spirit

by the heat on Jun 3, 2008 5:38 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

thiago alves tko, that said hughes could easily lay and pray a 3 rnd decision. swick isn’t gonna last 30 seconds if he engages in a stand up war, he will get exposed here for a glass jaw, davis is a beast now

by markg on Jun 3, 2008 7:10 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

so many people are picking davis to win, like it’s a no brainer???swick has one loss in the ufc!!to a much bigger fighter who used his size and strength to his advantage. he has one iffy fight and people forget about him. i believe davis has a good chance to win, but so does swick. hard fight to call.

by Bass on Jun 3, 2008 7:34 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

davis is just evolved so much from tuf days and you can see the improvemnt from his training unlike a lot of other fighters.. too much power for this fight but you right anything could happen

by markg on Jun 3, 2008 8:25 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Alves

by GodDamnMike on Jun 3, 2008 8:51 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i think matt hughes will definitely get this one, who knows maybe alves just got a chance to caught parisyan with his knee, but as you can see in thiago last fight he’s been dominated by prisyan thru 1st round & early 2nd round till the knee came up
