Tito Ortiz is '65 percent sure' he wants to start his own MMA promotion

Props: Boston Herald
Quoteworthy:
"When I was in the UFC, they talked so much about how I wanted to get out of it and how I wanted to stop fighting. It was a bunch of baloney. I still see 3-4 more years of competition left (in me) and I want to build. I want to make a (rival) company neck and neck with the UFC. I think it’s going to be about taking care of the fighters and that’s what I’m going to do."
Former UFC light heavyweight champion, Tito Ortiz, talks about his future in a recent interview. After an upcoming tour to promote his new book, "This is Gonna Hurt," Ortiz -- who recently satisfied the last fight on his UFC deal -- says that he wants to start a new mixed martial arts promotion. That's a costly endeavor, which would need a patient investor with deep pockets. Perhaps his good friend, Donald Trump, is interested. Stranger things have happened.

Tito knows how this thing works. If he gets Trump’s support and Donny stays out of it, it might be some good.

Hey Mania,
Just listening to sports radio 610 WIP in Philly while I am bBQ’ing and some caller just gave you some publicity. Of course everyone is talking Kimbo today, but the dude called in and said he read some info on mmamania.com!
Mania…Getting love in Philly! Keep it up!

Forget Trump, Jenna can back him, and if her pockets aren’t deep enough… she can dole out a few BJ’s, tape/sell it(to us), feed the money to Tito and he can sell us fights….I’m super business savvy

God knows that Gary Shaw doesn’t want the competition, he’s got his hands full as it is.

Lets see if Tito can put his money where his mouth is and pay the fighters like he talks about.
If he does it will validate much of what he has said and “ducked” in the past due to money issues, and earn him a lot of respect. If he doesnt, he just really is a pussy of a fighter.

Genius idea!! He does know how it works, what fighters want, etc.. I can also see DONALD,(he IS the man),being interested. VERY INTERESTED. I am not a big Tito fan but it is a GREAT idea!!

First fighter Tito should sign is James Thompsons ear, that ear took direct shots from Kimbo Slice and just kept coming, that ear has heart, more heart than Jorge Gurgel!

Firstly this is a bad idea. Secondly he is not going to start his own mma promotion, he’ll be more interested in making more money in other orgs. Affliction? A Frank Shamrock rematch? And how does tito go down in Japan, could be a money maker over there? Tito is about making money and i don’t think he’ll want to lose money with a 2nd rate mma org that no one gives a crap about. And he’ll probably end up signing with UFC again anyway, he’s all talk. I’ll believe it when i see it Tito.

yeah i think we have plenty of promotions already.
Plus i think Affliction through HDNET will be a pretty good rival for UFC once they make couture vs Fedor. There upcoming card is pretty awsome too!
by matthew on Jun 1, 2008 5:56 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
They will be a good rival once they get the distribution they need to compete with UFC. As of right now, limited exposure is what they have.
It’s not a bad place to be, start small, build and expand. Can’t grow overnight (even with huge fights).

Speaking of deep pockets, his girl has a few bucks herself and I am sure she has talked Tito up on this idea. We need more promotions, not the likes of EliteXC. I think Tito will sit back and see how Affliction does and go from there.

he won’t start his own promotion and risk everything when he could make big money at other orgs. donald however has some dough and can make things happen but without someone like that helping its only a dream.
by markg on Jun 1, 2008 6:09 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
the more promotions the more competition, how can that be a bad thing? more competition means lower PPV prices, higher salaries for fighters to influence their decisions for organizations, etc. this can only be a good thing!
by brendan on Jun 1, 2008 6:12 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Only if they co-promote an event. Otherwise it can water down the competition between the fighters. Imagine if all the top guys are champions of some organization and they’re just beating a bunch of cans as contenders. Not much fun to watch.

Theres no other brand like The UFC. The production, the cards, the ability to take The UFC to other continents, and not to mention arguably some of the best competitors in the world. I think Elite XC’s card last night was a flop and i was actually missing the crisp and and colorful action of The UFC last night!…But its all good b/c we have tonights featherweight battle and next weekends UFC 85….Pheew!….
by ntvman on Jun 1, 2008 6:18 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
your totally right theres no promotion like the UFC! the rest are amatuer right now.
by matthew on Jun 1, 2008 6:38 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Exactly last nights show was awefull. Beyond just the fights being bad the production was awefull. Camera shots of the back of the refs head, camera shots during the kimbo fight from the nose bleed seats. It looked like they have never televised a MMA event before. Who would want to start over? Just go to Affliction or something and make your money not beat anyone under the age of 40 (Forest won that fight) and say you are the best.

I hope you enjoy UFC 85 because that will be last one as I susupect they are going to lose money on that crappy card. I would like to see Affliction do well because they will cross promote and have fighters from all around fight each other. The UFC calls their champs world champions, but they really should be called n.american champions.

A Silva & Nog – Brazilian, I haven’t got a degree in Geography but last time I checked Brazil wasn’t North America.

Good luck Tito! You’ll need it! Just hope you don’t lose everything and come back to the UFC begging!

Do we really need more shitty promotions we already have elite xc
by braveheart on Jun 1, 2008 6:49 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
It is a smart thought to develop a competitive promotion. But it would have to be competitive on many levels and would take HUGE HUGE HUGE money to get going. As far as The Donald investing, he sure knows real estate but to get into his vault for MMA might be difficult. He tried sporting once (maybe more) with the former USFL… not sure that one went the way he would have liked. Also, timing is everything and to get some fighters signed whose contracts have expired with other organizations would be paramount.
As much as I hate to suggest this, if he truly wants to look after the fighters perhaps his first step should be more along the lines of agent or something like that.
Imagine Dana having to negotiate 20 or so contracts with Jenito……
by DJ on Jun 1, 2008 6:53 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
This is an excellent idea, and who knows more about mma than tito…dana is pulling it off and he was nothing but an aerobics instructer before he got the ufc gig.Tito would be light years ahead of what dana started with!!!!team punishment!!

Yeah I know, he just doesn’t give it up no matter what.

Tito wants to MAKE money, not lose it. If anyone close to him has him run some realistic numbers, he’ll drop the idea quickly, in favor of trying to land $1 million per fight from some org.

If he’s going to succeed, he needs to be able to sign TALENT and that’s going to take a lot of confidence from his fellow fighter’s. I just don’t see Tito as the CEO and leader of an MMA company.
by THORAZINE on Jun 1, 2008 7:21 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I dont know why 5 or so of the top MMA guys who are disappointed with UFC start thier own thing up. It wouldnt take much. Think about it some of these guys have gyms everywhere that look and have tons of talented guys.

Tito is just negotiating. Lorenzo Fertitta will up his offer. At any rate Ortiz is on a medical suspension for 6 months. EliteXC is going bankrupt and they don’t have the money (and after last night I’m sure that they can’t get any new investors) to sign Ortiz. Last night was beyond a shadow of a doubt the one and only EliteXC on CBS – you can take that to the bank.

Good for you Tito, I’m 100 percent sure I won’t watch it.
by Haze on Jun 1, 2008 8:07 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Tito should drop this pipe dream and just head over to elite xc. He would easily beat up kimbo slice (if he moved to heavyweight) and become their new star. I’m not a big tito fan, but during that kimbo/thompson fight last night I couldn’t help but think that if that were tito ortiz on top, Mr. Slice would have been dead.

I’m 99% sure that this is just wishfull thinking.

Jenna must have told Tito to start an MMA company.
Perhaps she can help because she is such a cough, cough, cough, great businesswoman.

Am I the only one that laughed at the “65 percent” line? That cracked me up…maybe he meant 61%, or perhaps 73%?

Yeah. I thought it was hilarious. It’s just dumb.

Another Tito article? WTF Mania?
Who else is tired of Tito on this site?
Tito could shit on a pile of noodles and this site would cover it.
C’mon people. Let people know what you think.

The outlok is grim for Jacob honestly, it will probably take at least 8-10 years before Jacobs org can compete head to head with the UFC, but if he is willing to persist in the long term, things might work out for him.

Shut Up Tito, ur not CEO material, please sign with Elite XC for their next fight on CBS and take Kimbo’s belt. Tito, ur not the best MMA fighter anymore, but your still an experienced MMA athlete, that would represent this sport much better than it’s being portrayed on CBS.

“I dont know why 5 or so of the top MMA guys who are disappointed with UFC start thier own thing up.”
Too many egos in the room. Imagine 5 guys who all want to be the top dog trying to work together and co-own a promotion. There’s just no way.
