MMA Quick Quote: 'Grim' outlook on Kimbo's performance

A man is man. And what I saw in this man today, it was just garbage. I'm going to speak it real, it was garbage. You did tap. You did tap out, I saw it, I was right there.

-Undefeated EliteXC heavyweight Brett "The Grim" Rogers trashes the performance of flagship fighter Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson at the "Saturday Night Fights" post-event press conference and nearly causes an all-out melee. Rogers - as well as many fans in attendance - thought they saw Ferguson tap during the second-round onslaught by his opponent, English import James "The Colossus" Thompson.

RIDICULOUS!!!
What a joke. Kimbo had zero ground game, and is a JOKE!!!!! first of all Brett Rogers KO’s Thomppson, so Thompson gets Kimbo. That makes sense right? Second, what is all this training Kimbo is doing going towards? BJJ? Cardio? Take down defense? Third, where did the doctor get her degree, University of Phoenix? Like I said before, put Kimbo against ANY top 100 guy, HW or LHW for that matter, he’s dead!
This event was a perfect reason for Dana and the UFC (how many times did they mention UFC by the way) to cross promote and put an end to this fiasco once and for all! Kimbo/Nog, Lawler/Silva, Noons/BJ, Shields/GSP, Scott Smith/Rich Frankliin. I didn’t even mention Chuck, Rampage or Hughes. Hell, Brock would destroy Kimbo in under a minute!!
My wife’s open minded assessment…# 1 I’m a loser for blogging, # 2 Gina was impressive, #3 why was the womens fight stopped, #4 why was title fight stopped, #5 Kimbo’s sweep when in crusifix was fixed (I disagree, but she’s the one with the BJJ background), and finally that the doctor (I think stupid bitch was exact phrase) sucked!
I thought the fights were exciting, but the show exposed elite for what I thought all along…a second rate company with a guy who can’t beat anyone in the top 100, carrying the company on his back.
and last, 2-0 with a sub??? he’s 3-0, 2ko’s and a sub…right?
sorry so long!

Sour Diesel, its ok that your guy did a poor job. No need for the tantrum!! Grow up buddy.

Kimbo has been built up as this mega star. Elite xc and everyone that was involved with his promotion should be ashamed of themselves for what his promotion is doing to the sport.

I love MMA and defend it as much as possible but Kimbo has been used for ratings and a quick buck.

I agree Kirky!

True MMA fans are disgusted.

Like, I said before, EliteXC is sending back 10 years.

true mma fans know the roots of this sport. fighting. throwing licks, bringing blood. not bumps and bruises, but knots and gashes. i’m a fight fan. as long as kimbo and elitexc put on fights where people get busted up, i’m still watchin it

True MMA fans? Don’t lump the real fans into your distorted view of reality. You’re the kind of guy that watches races for the wrecks too, and think that Michael Vick didn’t do anything wrong, aren’t you?

TRUE MMA fans watch the SPORT for the ART of it.

by Scuds on Jun 1, 2008 11:59 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The “ART” of it, couldn’t of used a better word myself. So much technique, so much stratagy, didnt see a whole lot last night.

I got to give it up for Lawler/Smith fight, those two put everything they had into it, a good show, a good fight, maybe a bit sloppy but it was good.

The Kimbo fight looked like 2 giant babies rolling around on the ground, Kimbo did not tap I don’t think, I think he was giving the thumbs up to let the ref know he was ok.

The type of show that was put on, unfortunately, doesn’t help the sport of MMA at all. I thought I was watching WWE. First of all, we go through almost 30 minutes of commercials and watching the stage girls dance before we get to see a fight… Oh, and the stage dancers! Those waanabe Thugs talking crap and throwing up signs behind Rogers??? Please! If you want to be a professional, than you, and the people around you need to act the part. It sure looks like it wants to be to me, along with some of those ridiculous entrances? We didn’t start getting professional until the womens fight, which was impressive. Oh, I almost forgot. The announcers, with the exception of Shamrock, are crap. Did you hear that one clown said Kimbo tried to DDT Thompson? Some people call that a double leg takedown FROM Thompson, but whatever floats your WWE boat.

Kevin, I agree with your whole post, all the stoppages were crap, and I also agree with your wife, that sweep from the crucifix? I could have taught my three year old how to do it cleaner and faster than Kimbo did. It was painfully slow, and SHOULD have never really worked. I say should because weird things happen, and it MIGHT have been legit, but something tells me know. The whole fight was like that, the ref standing them up early, constantly telling Kimbo what to do, etc, etc… It was just a mess.

The moral of this story is, that this wasn’t a good way to introduce people to the sport. It reeked of WWE in both the attitude of the show, the attitude of the first few fighters, and the way the fights ended.

by Scuds on Jun 1, 2008 8:25 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I have to agree. But people aren’t stupid and I think even people who know nothing about MMA thought that was a weak card with premature stoppages. And those “thugs” behind Rogers were Big Black and Bam Bam from the Rob & Big show on MTV.

by bnf on Jun 1, 2008 1:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I have been watching UFC for a number of years now and practice MMA myself and must say that televising EliteXC is a huge mistake and sets back the sport.
With the introduction of the show tonight is it obviously apparent that CBS thinks the demographic is an uneducated, sex crazed man rather than an athlete—it’s disrespectful. The entrance of the athletes and the dancing girls cheapens the sport and the "introduction to the moves" belittles the audience.

After viewing this program, I understand why the people that represent the UFC are very critical of this company. Generally, the athletes are not even close to the talent levels that the UFC has and it seems like they are not really concerned with the talent and are actually looking to put on a show WWE (formerly WWF) style.
People might watch tonight but I recently read that EliteXC is on the verge of bankruptcy, I seriously hope that they go belly up soon. EliteXC can do whatever they want but CBS is broadcast nationally and in seeing the display tonight this is a huge mistake by CBS. As a fighter myself, I respectfully request that CBS stop showing these Saturday Night Fights. It gives a horrible name to MMA and it will drive away anyone that is actually interested in the sport.

by Geno on Jun 1, 2008 9:45 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

They actually reported losses in excess of 27 million. The CBS deal was necessary, and its do or die for Elite XC. If this doesn’t work out, then they will be closed by net year.

The only other US company doing well is actually Strikeforce, (I’m not counting WEC since its Zuffa).

by chris on Jun 1, 2008 10:40 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’d be shocked if CBS broadcasted another EliteXC card. CBS is not obliged to put any more cards on if they don’t want to. The head of CBS was against it before – can you imagine how much more he is against it now?

by Muscle Dolphin on Jun 1, 2008 11:29 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Good I think CBS had a good hand in ruining that show as well. Mania had it posted before but maybe MMA is not for basic tv? Maybe we should stick with Spike and PPV where the beat downs are expected. Lawler and Smith could have saved the company, and they could have turned their attention a little from Kimbo to Lawler or Smith whoever won. Then worked off Gina if they wanted to keep the company going but now even the new fans are questioning the legitimacy of the sport. If I could tell anyone interested in watching MMA watch the UFC, you really only get a Starnes fight once in a very long while, fights aren’t stopped early, and they are much more technical and explosive. Please go away Gary Shaw.

Yah I agree with you, I think that the Kimbo fight was one of the dumbest fight’s have have seen, where did they get this guy off the street’s, He need’s so much training, I really do not have time to keep up with all the fighter’s and what go’s on, I wish I did, but from what I heard last night he was and is a street fighter right? Well that is what he need’s to keep doing, he is soooo out of class it seem’s, that to me it’s all bs.

i don’t understand how ur calling kimbo garbage.. he never said anything about being the best. he knows he doesn’t have a ground game. we all know that.
second dana runs his mouth bc hes pissed elitexc gets cbs and not him. if dana had kimbo he would make him out as a star bc Kimbo makes money for u. its smart for gary shaw to do it. And for u to sit there and name all those match ups makes u look like an idiot. we all know the ufc is the best. and for u to say jake shields vs GSP well jake is no joke and gsp is great but anyone vs him would lose in the ww division but Jake is no joke and your and idiot who thinks that they are always right

First of all that show did more damage than good last night.lets start with kimbo if you can’t see that for what it was you are blinded by the hype.Plain and simple fix was in i called it i told all my friends no matter what they would not allow kimbo to lose ,and what do you know james get\s hit three times, doesn’t even fall and they stop it.just for that i hope elitexc folds up .they made it look just as corrupt as boxing last night. Then the best fight of the evening ,clearly, ending a no contest off a poke to the eye i have seen plenty of pokes to the eye ,but they never ending the fight.GARBAGE!!!!!!!!!!!!!

let me ask you this Kevin, and this is a point that should be brought up to all the Kimbo haters….what fighter do you know AT ALL after 1 year of MMA training after he turns 32 and only 2 other professional fights under his belt (the Ray Mercer fight was called an “exhibition fight”) would be ready to take on a top fighter? And thats for any weight class and any promotion. The answer is next to none. What are you trying to say when you say he would get killed? Are you implying that someone, again, with 2 pro fights on their record and 1 year of training experience is not ready to face a top opponent. Well thank you so much for clarifying that for us Mr. King of the Obvious. The truth is, people just decided they were against Kimbo from the beginning and nothing will change their mind. First he fights Mercer, who despite being 46 at the time will still knock half of the ordinary people walking this planet. He takes Mercer’s punches and finishes him with a guillotine which noone saw coming, showing he had at least as much knowledge of chokes as you or I.But people said “Yeah but Mercer is not an MMA fighter”. So next he fought Bo Cantrell. A guy with 20 fights under his belt (10-10), a guy who has participated in tournaments,a big heavyweight who has been in with some hard hitters,A GUY WHO GETS HIT FOR A LIVING,and Kimbo makes him tap out after what….3 blows?!When is the last time you’ve seen that? But people said “Yeah but, who the hell is Bo Cantrell?”. So next he fought Tank Abott, a certified legend in the sport who also is known for being a brawler and a knock out artist. This is the guy who used to be what kimbo is now. And Kimbo laid his ass out. But people said “Yeah but Tank is washed up”. So now they put him with a younger, bigger, more experienced fighter who is intense as hell and is a “top 100” heavyweight. A guy who beat Don Frye, who beat Yoshida, who beat Dan Severn, who beat giant Silva, a guy who’s only goal is to destroy his opponent and is capable of doing so, Kimbo wins and of course people are still talking. The truth is Kimbo had him staggered from the beginning. First he hit him with a good knee which forced Thomspon to the mat.He did have a hold of him there so either he dropped him from the power of the shot, or he threw him down with a good technique, i’ll let you decide. Later, Kimbo was able to get out of a standing guillotine which he was smart enough to put an arm in.Than he shook off a kimora attempt to roll thompson off him.Remember, ground game is not just about submitting someone, but defense also.At the beggining of the 2nd he mixed up body shots with head and rocked Thomspon until Thompson shot in on him.Kimbo tried for a guillotine about a minute in, but lets face it, they were both winded. In the middle of the 2nd, Slice caught him with a great combo that could have put him out. To the people that want to say they stopped it too early, it could have been stopped there if you watch it again.Kimbo wore himself out and therefore barely survived the rest of the round with “The Colossus” laying on top of him.Third round Slice opened up again with huge shots that almost put Thompson out.To be able to still hit that hard when you are exhausted is crazy. And the last shot he landed, the uppercut, had James in another universe.Look at the look on his face! The blood was secondary, dude was out on his feet. The fight got stopped before the doctor came in the ring. The fans booing there just wanted to see Slice drop him.No it wasn’t a perfect performance.Yes his cardio was lacking and his ground game could have been tighter. And yes, truth be told,in another fight they might have stopped it when Thomspon was pounding him. But first of all, a lot of those were little pitter patter shots. And secondly, you have to take each fight as it comes. Different decisions get made for different fighters. Everyone knows those shots were not going to be enough to hurt Kimbo and this was the main event, so they let it go on.But despite all that, for his 3rd pro MMA fight, it was a strong showing. What can possibly be said against kimbo? We know he needs work, but so does any beginner. If you are dissapointed by him, you just hold him to too high of a standard.Think about it, what other fighter has come in to so much doubt? Everyone else gets to prove themselves before people talk. But of course he has been hyped up by the media, which he never asked for. He never asked someone to record him fighting in a backyard, he got out of prison, someone bet money he couldn’t beat the other guy and he took the fight for the money. After that, every other fight was one where he was challenged.People put it on youtube and everyone took notice. Of course he was gonna run with that. Your talking about a guy who was homeless, lived a hard life, did almost a decade behind bars and is only good at one thing. You should repect him for dedicating himself and trying to become a top fighter. If nothing else, he is just a tough, strong guy with a lot of fighting experience. A lot of guys start out having never been in a real street fight. So thats not a bad place for him to start. People just dont like the idea that this tough ass dude actually is proving he is worth his weight so the look for any little thing to criticize. Those that ask for more technique are not giving him enough time and totally missing the point.Do you really want to see Kimbo grapple with someone for a whole round?People want to see him knock someone out plain and simple.Just like Mike Tyson used to get criticized for just being a brawler.Did anyone really want to see Tyson fight a technical, elusive, defensive minded fight? No, they just wanted to see carnage.Everyone wants to be well rounded but not everyone can be a Fedor or Randy Couture type guy.And thats the one thing that more than anything only comes with time and experience. So let Kimbo get more time to improve and keep winning fights and I know people will continue talking smack for the rest of his career because a hater doesnt use logic, they just hate.

ok, so i’ve been a reader/fan of this site for awhile and it took the first event on real tv to get me to start posting. For me, I was a huge hater of Kimbo before last night and I gotta say, after it, not much has changed. I have gained respect for him as a man…I liked his attitude towards the sport…he knows he has a lot to learn. Bottom line though, is that his skills aren’t there. I was playin poker online earlier and a guy at the table was a believer and last night confirmed to him that kimbo was for real. I was astonished. My problem is not with Kimbo(I’d like to see him fight Brock…another overhyped newcomer to the sport….brock would kill him bye the way), but the problem is with the way Gary shaw is exploiting him and the sport. He’s being put in a position where his character will be called into question which is unfortunate. The stoppages were horrible. The womens fight was a good scrap but the title fight really could have put elitexc on the map. Odds are, next time, Lawler bangs for a little bit then takes smith down and pounds him out quick. One of the best brawls I’ve seen in a while…maybe since Chuck/Wanderlei. Aside from the dancers, I liked the production value. I got it in HD whereas I can’t get Spike in HD or UFC PPV’s in HD so appreciated. I thought the ring walks were tryin to draw on the Japanese style of production but the dancers were awful. Ok this is turnin into a novel so i’ll just say that I’m a full fledged member of the BJ for President campaign/ I’m from Boston, wo hit me up with any Kenflo stuff, and Kevin, Adam, John(not on the Kimbo stuff) u guys make the most sense on here, keep up the good work.

Kimbo is a badass, you guys need to quit hating on him.. I guarantee not one of you guys given the chance would even try to fight him.

Ok, so which fighter in the history of the UFC made their depute against any top ranked fighters. All had to start from the bottom and work their way up. Shamrock, Coleman, Ortis, Belford, Hughes, St,Pierrer. They all started at the bottom. They all won some and all lost some before they were crowned chapions and top contenders. Kimbo is following the same path as they all did. Rememeber “Tank”, same thing. Give the man a chance, what reasons are there for excluding him or anybody else who wants to step in to the octogon, cage, ring, for whatever you want to call it. May I remind you that he is training under Bas Rutten. Former UFC Champion, I think Kimbo has as good a shot as anyone, as long as he puts his heart and soul in to it, and we all know he is a fighter.

One more thing, I think I heard magliotta say the shots didn’t hurt him. Do the rules say intelligently defending yourself, or if they hurt? Kimbo was taking elbows and small, not hard punches, undefended, for a minute, and then struggled to his corner. that fight should have been stopped!!! Not due to a punch (weak at that) to the ear!!!

hahaha I love it. nah Kevin, Kimbo was intelligently atttempting to get out of the situation, unsuccesfully or not, his mind was all there and he was tolerating the shots looking for a way out.

Punching to the ear was not why taht fight was stopped, did you see Thompson’s eyes? He was back in britain for those 10 seconds, he even gave the ref a little slap. That was the fairest stoppage of the night, out of all those bad ones.

NO WAY sho8uld those pitty pat elbows and punches by Josh have stopped trhe fight. That was a good decision by the ref. I am actually really starting to like that Ref….If Josh wanted to finish the fight, he should have dropped a few bombs on Kimbo when he had him up against the fence in the crucifix….but he didnt, and I am happy they didnt stop the fight.

I am actually happy with Kimbo’s progression. He wasnt all that bad on the ground for the most part. He stood up immediately after being taken down a couple times, he even swept THompson. GIVE me a BREAK, he DID NOT TAP!!! He got his hand free and it happened to touch Josh once…Thats not tapping.

Kevin: Your hate is clouding your judgement….That fight was stopped when itr should have been stopped…Josh was out on his feet! Thats a KO! When Wanderlei KO Rampage but Rampage didnt fall, that was still a KO, but since this is the Hated Kimbo, you telling me he didnt deserve to win that fight.

The guy is 3-0 in mma, and he just fought his toughest opponent yet, and did a solid job and put on an entertaining fight. His ground game is improving, although he even admits he still has a lot of work to do.

Enough with Hating on this guy cause u dont like how he is marketed! Should he turn down the money? Get REAL Haters! EliteXC is to blame for the unwarranted exp[osure, but it hasnt gotten to kimbo’s head so I respect him for it…. This Guy is a REAL FIGHTER, and he will only get better!!

Thats was a very entertaining fight and the event was one of trhe more entertaining EliteXC events to date!

I enjoyed the night!

I agree with your statement John 100%. Kimbo showed much improvement. I mean a year ago he had no idea what ground fighting was or even how to throw knees in the clinch. His stand up fighting is impressive but his take down defense needs a lot of work. His ground game needs a lot work but for a guy with not even a years worth of BJJ experience I say he defended himself pretty well. It was only when he got tired that he struggled on the ground.

Kevin ask your wife if she knows any many white belt BJJ fighters that are unbelievable at about 7 – 9 months of training.

He is showing progression and takes the fights very seriously. He is a legite fighter that just so happens to be getting a lot of exposure. Do not hate him because he is riding the money train. At least he doesn’t believe his own hype. Just listen to his interviews he is not arrogant by any means and he respects the sport. Look at Phil Baroni this guy is a joke and the kind of guy you are talking about Kevin.

MMAFAN1981: At least some one on this site isnt so damn judgemental! Good post!

Why is Kimbo so hated:
He’s black?
He looks like a thug?
He was involved in the porno industry?
He gets attention?

I just dont get it, I dont give a crap, what the man looks like, his background, his race….or how much attention he gets, because that isnt up to him…..All I care about is if he respects the sport I LOVE, which he has, and like mmafan pointed out, he doesnt believe the hype, he knows he has work to do…. Its his 3rd fight, Actually this is really his 1st mma fight because, Tank and the other idiot didnt even come to fight.

Not bad for a guys 1st real test in mma…..I dont know if some of you guys are just Racists, Haters, or Idiots? and By the way, I am Italian, so know one accusme me of playing the race card…Just doing what I always do….CALLING IT LIKE I SEE IT!

by john on Jun 1, 2008 10:46 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Are you serious? That’s a horrible argument… After 7-9 months of BJJ training as your JOB, not as a hobby, you SHOULD be better than what he showed. He has hours every day to dedicate himself to BJJ and his ground game, which wasn’t very apparent, which means one of two things… He’s not putting the time into the ground game, or he just can’t figure it out.

by Scuds on Jun 1, 2008 11:25 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think your are pulling the race card. Nobody is calling out Grim here, he’s black and he even had Snoop come out and rap for him, made a big show out of a little guy but nobody cares cause he came to fight. Kimbo came, got embarrassed on the ground by a guy that has no ground game. Did you watch the fight without biased? No because you think Kimbo is legit. Just cause he admits he needs more training doesn’t make him humble it makes him right. He needs so much more training before he enters a ring again that he probably shouldn’t enter a ring again. His ground game was sloppy and looked like he got no training whatsoever. I’ll tell you why Bas didn’t want Kimbo to fight any credible fighters. Its because Kimbo is too old to learn this stuff and Bas knows it. He knows now that Kimbo is going to make Bas look like a terrible trainer and he doesn’t want that. But I’ll tell you what, depending on if Kimbo can man up and take this fight with Grim then I’ll give him one more chance to prove his credibility. Thats way more than anyone else is saying but if he can jump in the ring with Grim he’s showing a lot of heart cause he knows Grim is a better fighter than him. Beating down guys in alley ways is all fine and dandy but it doesn’t prove your skill. The guys in the UFC are from all over the country, he was fighting doodes from the same county. Kimbo man up and fight Grim! Gary Shaw quit and take your boxing promotion back to boxing!

Hate on Shaw and the Elite XC if you will, but not the guy who is just trying to make a legitament run with thsi sport, who simply took the best contract available to him(like we all would have).

The Lawler adn Smith fight really was by FAR the best fight, and the stoppage was also with the MOST controvercy.

Odviously some people don’t have a clue if you say its about race ,what about rampage .We can see real talant ,and kimbo sucks compared to real mixed martial artist ,i did not see any improvement from him looked the same fighter that was on the internet he had no ground defense ,to save his life all he has a puncher’s chance he needs to go train at xtreme couture ,team quest ,some training facility where can get taught some ground defense, don’t get me wrong maybe one day he can truelly be good ,but it is not right now he needs to go back to the drawing board, its really a combination of faults his and elitexc for needing some hype,

Agreed man, your throwing your own credibility away riding a train thats heading for a broken bridge. I would like to see Kimbo fight Grim, he could earn it all back with a decent fight against Grim but I don’t see that happening.

by Bic on Jun 1, 2008 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Guys, Kimbo is a much better stand up fighter than Grim. He has a much more refined approach. He throws crisp and calculated punches. From what I saw of Grim he throws wild haymakers hoping to land something big. If he chooses to stand and trade with Kimbo he will get knocked out.

You can’t tell me that you thought Kimbo’s stand up looked horrendous. He was picking Thompson apart and those knees in the clinch were very nice. He struggled on the ground when he got tired and for his first time I was impressed. The end of round two when Thompson was landing the patty cake punches was the only time Kimbo was in trouble.

I agree John that the big reason people dislike Kimbo is because of what he looks like. The only reasons for people to dislike him are what he looks like and the fact that he is not a well established fighter as of yet. Other than things that are more or less out of his control what has he done to discredit the sport. It seems like everyone is so ready to discredit him before he even has a chance to do anything.

Don’t get me wrong does he deserve the attention maybe not but you can’t hate him for capitalizing on it. What’s that saying? “Don’t hate the player, hate the game.” or in this case the promoters.

My own credability? U guys are judging a Man on his 1st ever MMA fight… Thats right, it was his 1st fight as far as I am concerned… Tank is a non training drunk and dude before him took a Dive….This was Kimbo’s 1st test add on all the additional pressure and I didnt think it was all that bad of a performance for a guys 1st fight in the sport.

That was the 1st really wqell trained man Kimbo has ever faced…..No shame in his performance at all!

by john on Jun 1, 2008 3:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No i know, I was saying the same thing when Kimbo was on the ground taking those weak, but repeated punches to the face. They may not have been hard but he wasn’t defending himself at all, I really think Kimbo should have lost right there, but what do I know? lol

by Toms Bombs on Jun 1, 2008 9:32 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

What the hell was there to defend from? NOTHING! He was tapping Kimbo on the face, What was there to defend…Josh wasnt doing anything relevant that Kimbo needed to defend.. If Josh Wanted to wein the fight, he should have gained some energy and dropped a few Bombs down on Kimbo, and he could hjave won the fight.

I think Kimbo defend himself just fine on the ground, because Thompson didnt do anything significant to defend!

I really starting to like that referee! He is turning into the best thing to Big John.

Scott Smith should have punched that Lady doctor in her Face…..TRAVESTY! Robbie looked Great, Scott came to fight as well…That DR. jipped us out of what was turning into an epic brawl!

by john on Jun 1, 2008 10:51 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Kevin: If a fighter gets taken down and the fighter on top repeatedly slaps him in the face or gives him noogies, should the ref stop the fight because he wasnt defending the slaps/noogies? Hell No! Thompsons fault he didnt end the fight because he didnt throw any shots even worth defending, especially against an IRON JAW like KIMBO’s!

Those shots were meaningless, He could have done more damage twisting Kimbo’s nipples then with those weak ass punches and elbows!

Good refereeing, and when the fight stopped it was a good stoppage. Josh was HURT BAD! Do you really want to see a terrible injury on the 1st ever network televised mma event? It could have set the sport back years! Good stoppage by the ref, and an overall good night of Refereeing by the Big Deisel ref that worked most the fights!

I don’t hate Kimbo john, as a matter of fact, I enjoyed his youtube fights. That said, I can’t believe that one of the posters I respect is defending this event. What did you like about it?
-3 early stoppages?
-Kimbo with no answe for over a minute?
-The tv camara panning out for 5 seconds while Kimbo may or ma not have been tapping?
-30 minutes into the broadcast and 2 sets of commercials and a tutorial?
-A doctor being let into the ring before the 5 minute recovery time?
-a doctor who was terrible?
-Kimbo not defending thr ground game from a guy with ZERO ground skills?
Yes john, there were a few good fights, but Kimbo would get owned by ANY top 100 fighter including BJ. I like his humbleness and the fact he’s soft spoken, but WHAT IS HE GONNA SAY? HE’S TERRIBLE! He’s making money, and good for him, but to be the guy to carry an organization is pathetic!!!

by kevin on Jun 1, 2008 1:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Kevin: The problem is that your expectations of the event were way too High to start with… I thought it was crap all along, but I actually enjoyed some of the fights.

Keep in mind we all watched it FREE. Now if I was paying $45 to see last nights event, I would have a totally different view.

I dont care about the production of a free event….Did u really think we werent going to be bombarded with commercials? Get real!

I will admit that some of the early stoppages were bad, but that has nothing to do with eliteXC….U can blame New Jersey Athletic comission and CBS for most of the crap that took place last night.

The girls fight was entertaining, though it was stopped early, as was the title fight

I completely agree that Kimbo carrying EliteXC is PATHETIC, but I dont hate Kimbo for it…I blame that baboon Shaw.

A lot of crap went down last night, and Kimbo is the least to blame.. The blame should go to:
CBS
New Jersey Athletic Commision
EliteXC (Gary Shaw)
That whore of a doctor
and the idiot ref in the girls fight
and Phil Baroni for being such a Bumb.

There are millions oif things to complain about before Kimbo’s performance!

by john on Jun 1, 2008 3:41 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You don’t think a controversial stop would be better? Your losing reality friend

by Bic on Jun 1, 2008 1:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I dont understand what u r saying….Stoppages are caused by Doctors or Referee’s both of which are employed by the State althletic Comission…None of that is under EliteXC or the fighters control.

I didnt say that Kimbo blew me away Technically, but I was entertained, and that doesnt always happen from a heavyweight fighter..

Off the top of my head, I would have much rather watched that fight, then probably any of Assuerio Silva’s UFC fights or Justin Eilers and dudes like that…..Kimbo is even more of a novice then those dudes..

Problem is that all your expectations were too high. I knew Kimbo is a novice and I dont try to pretend that he isnt just cause of the hype and the main event status…I had low expectations, and I was entertained.

Of course you people that are judging him like Antonio Silva or something are going to be dissapointed!

Nah im not a huge Kimbo fan, but he really has only a VERY short time training for real, like was already said, most guys are training for years before there first fights, Kimbo started training and jumped right in. It’s misplaced hate is what it is. If Kimbo were in UFC not getting as much attention, nobody would hate on him.

Kimbo should move somewhere more legit, ELiteXC just might ruin him.

I agree that most of the show sucked, however, I did enjoy Gina’a fight, allthough the stoppage was crap, and the Lawler fight was entertaining. I’m not saying that they are the best of the best, but Lawler/Smith was a fun fight to watch. The rest of the show was crap, and to make Kimbo the main event is rediculous! I believe it was when the camera got really up close when thompson had kimbo in the crucifix raining down elbows. the camera was only on kimbos big head and jimmy’s arm/elbow/face. you could see kimbo’s hand moving doing a kind of tapping motion on jimmy’s leg. i thought he was tapping at first, but since jimmy didnt let up and the ref didnt do shit, i assumed i was misinterpreting what it was. unless we get a better view/shot of the fight we wont kno it really was.

JOhns Right here and aint going NO WHere! Sorry I dont blog late night Saturday’s I prefer ground n pounding my girlfreinds twat late at night but here I am….whats up? I was actually impressed by his progression as an mma fighter…Do you idiots expect him to be Chuck Liddell after about a year of training….Give the guy a break he showed Progress, Class, and a hell of a stand up!

I was entertained

The girls fight was awesome

The title fight was great while it lasted, but that Lady Dr. Ruined the event…..She needs to never work an mma eventr again. Scott Smith should have gotten 5 minutes to recover, before the DR’s even start checking up on him! Terrible stoppage

Baroni is a JOKE who I hope to never have to see fight again. We all know his cardio is trash and his only chance at beating anyone is by KO in round 1, but when he is on the recieving end of a 1st round KO….He is just a joke, who acts a fool on the way too the ring!

Not a bad event!

Exactly, it was free, and not a bad event..
In no way am I saying that the UFC has anything to worry about, but it was entertaining and at the end of the day thats all that matters. Do I like Kimbo getting thrust into the limelight like this so early, after accomplishing NOTHING? No, but I fault the organization, I dont hate on him for it.

Kimbo is a FIGHTER, who will eventually turn into a real mma fighter, he is on his way….Give the guy a break, come one….I would love to see Chuck Liddell’s 3rd mma fight ever, being thrust on primetime network TV…. We all know Gary shaw is an idiot who is over promoting Kimbo, FANS on this site should know better! People on this site just dont like the way he looks, plain and simple….I expect more out of the fans on this site then saying Kimbo isnt improving….The guy is making a decent transition to mma….but you all hate on him…. I tell you one thing, No matter what his skill level is, I always see an exciting fight when Kimbo is involved, not the most technical, but exciting! He is a very humble man, who just appreciates the opportunity he is getting, and I believe he is working his ass off to try to make the best out of it!

Hate on Kimbo all you want, but I saw more excitement out of him, then I do out of at least 10 current UFC Heavyweights! So Keep Hating, it just shows your ignorance!

U tell me Kimbo cant beat the Manic Hispanic (who happens to be floating around the top 10 UFC HW? U guys r way too judgemental, he put on an exciting show PERIOD! and for that I am thankfull.

Give Josh Thompson some credit too! All this site did for months is talk about how weak his chin was…He came to fight last night! He could have folded like 10 different times through out the fight but he kept going…..I give both Heavyweights a round of applause for Gutsy performances!

by kevin on Jun 1, 2008 1:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sorry doode, but yeah I think the Manic Hispanic can beat Kimbo. I also think that anyone in the UFC can beat Kimbo. But maybe your right and he is improving. It should only stand that he should take on the guy who beat Thompson. I would like to see at least one more fight out of Kimbo, and that would be Kimbo against Grim. Thompson wobbled after a series of two blows, he wouldn’t stand and trade he went to a ground game that is weaker than current high school wrestlers. I think Kimbo will be exposed if he fights another guy who is more legit than Thompson. I say Kimbo doesn’t win his next fight. His progression is too slow, if he’s a brawler then he should be able to brawl. Kimbo could have saved himself this whole controversy if he just had killer instinct. At one point I saw Thompson looking so out of it that Kimbo could have just pushed him over, but Kimbo stalled, he didn’t attack he was afraid and lacked the instinct. If you lack the skill you need to make up for it else where. Where does Kimbo make up for the lack of skill?

I expected a 30 second Kimbo fight, I got to see the man finally tested somewhat for over 10 minutes….Thats a good start! Thats more then I have got to see out of him yet, and I appreciated it!

Kevin: the only person you have to blame for the early stoppages are the New Jersey Athletioc copmmision, and the doctor that they hired and the 1 skinny ref who refereed the girls fight.

You know what, I just typed a lengthy reply and clicked the ‘add comment’ button and then crashed.

I really can’t be bothered typing it again, Kimbo isn’t worth it.

The only thing I will repeat is that I’m disappointed John that you played the race card. You well know we love Anderson Silva and Rampage etc.

Just snap out of the Gary Shaw brainwash. Kimbo is a circus act that attracts viewers and thats it.

Everyone of the MMA fighters in any organisation respect the sport in which they participate, hardly worth being a supporter of any fighter for this reason.

My comments are not directed at Kimbo as a person. He is probably a really nice person. My comments are directed at his MMA representation only.

I’ll conclude, that if I was in Kimbo’s position, I’d be milking it for everything too. I would also say what everyone wanted me to say e.g. I respect this sport.

I don’t agree man, the UFC may not have the heavyweights now but all Afliction is doing is creating a super fight of HW. After that Affliction can’t afford to keep paying Sylvia 800k per fight and Fedor over 1 mil. They will be back to the UFC before you know it.

Deuce doesn’t know what he’s talking about, Isn’t it obvious that the UFC LHW is the marquee division? It is so stacked you can forget about the HW division.
And yeah… I agree with smokes, They will be back in the UFC for good.

I thought I saw him tap. It was half on/half off the edge of the screen. Even if he did, I thought he had a decent performance for a guy only in his third pro fight. My friends and I were commenting on the awesome cauliflower ear before the fight. Thoroughly enjoyed the exploding ear in the third.

by PJJ on Jun 1, 2008 4:07 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

By decent performance you mean zero ground game, terrible cardio and the ref helping him up? When’s the last time a guy gets side control and is stood up? JT has zero ground game too and dominated. BJ should bulk up and fight Kimbo, Dana hit the nail on the head…and I’m not a Dana fan, but what he’s done for the sport took 3 steps back tonight!

by kevin on Jun 1, 2008 4:10 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No, I meant by decent performance I guess I meant they didn’t have his opponent take a dive in the few seconds. Also that he survived in a terrible position on the ground (opponent’s skills aside) and even managed a decent sweep. I meant that from my perspective I had next to no respect for Kimbo and the spotlight given to him and I went from 0 to 5% respect. He still does not warrant the headlining and attention given to him but looked like a beginner who has improved and shows some potential. (This is trying to find some sort of positive in that complete debacle of an event. I still have plenty of disdain for Kimbo, Kev.) I really want to see that press conference though.

by PJJ on Jun 1, 2008 4:51 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

big james thompson would wear a lot of fighters out with the performance he had against kimbo. he’s so big and strong, a man can’t take 260 lbs. laying on him and pressing on him for a round or two. the fights thompson’s looked good in are the ones where he came out not wanting to trade punches. thompson looked good. that performance he gave would give a lot of heavyweights fits

by duece 4 on Jun 1, 2008 12:15 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No it would, your totally blind man. There are few heavyweights that Thompson would dare take down with ground skills like that. He got rolled when he shouldn’t have and couldn’t control the crucifix. Nobody would be hating on Kimbo if Thompson was a monster on the ground. Everybody saw that fight the same but you and John. I realize he’s up and coming but there was no skill whatsoever there. He tried to sit up while Thompson’s laying on his chest. At no point did he use his hips or legs. For 7 to 9 months of training you can at least learn better ground game than that. What heavyweights did you have in mind that either of these guys would give fits?

by mctapout on Jun 1, 2008 4:25 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I heard the ref say “you have to stand up, we are on cbs.” I don’t think the ref was on the take but I do think he was instructed to keep the fight off the ground as much a possible and stop the fight as soon as the fighter is somewhat vulnerable. This was shaw’s way of fixing the fight without it actually being fixed since Kimbo could only win the fight through strikes.

by Gregg on Jun 1, 2008 11:37 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Now we’ll see if Kimbo’s got any balls and fights Rogers. He said in an interview that “fighters talking shit about him would create a beast” After this what possible excuse can Shaw come up with and not make the fight???

by JV on Jun 1, 2008 4:25 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Agreed. He was happy to try and get a fight with Chuck with Gary Shaw whispering in his ear for a big money fight. Doubt Gary Shaw will want one of his own ranks beating Kimbo down, this was always going to happen with one of Shaws HW pissed off that a lesser skilled figher is promoted more and paid more than them.

by UKmmaBOY on Jun 1, 2008 1:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, Roger’s annihilated Thompson in round one despite the take downs.

Kimbo barely finished it and needed to be saved. They had to stop the fight despite the fact Thompson was in an identical position every round and fought through. This way Kimbo looked like he won even though many feel he was on his way to losing a decision.

I personally think he was going to his back again, he couldn’t fight off the lazy shoots before that, no reason to think he would have that time.

Judging by their performances against the same man, Grim reaps Kimbo.

Quit sucking his thumb, tap or no tap 20 unanswered elbows to the head should have caused a stoppage. He was not intelligently defending himself, and thompson was prepping his head for the Lakers v Celtics championship game

by dandeman on Jun 1, 2008 5:49 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree completely. All those unanswered blow to the head when he was pretty much in a crusifix, should have been the end of the fight.
This was someone who was supposed to lose in 30 seconds, with a glass jaw, who Kimbo was supposed to tear through. Kimbo struggled greatly through thr whole fight, his cardio was shit, he pretty much just let his legs rest flat on the ground when he was on his back, I mean it’s one thing to have no ground game, but even I know to keep your guard up so you don’t get mounted. Thompson should have had the mount several times over, Kimbo was just lucky he was fighting a fellow can.
BUT! Like john said, it was only Kimbo’s 3rd fight, and it’s not like people should be expecting a hall-of-famer to walk out.

Any UFC heavyweight who got a guy crucifixed into the cage would have left nothing but a blood spot where Kimbo’s head was. And they wouldn’t have gotten paid like he did to do it. If this is their idea of a HW Tito should stop cutting weight and move on up.

Ok so for all the people protecting Kimbo, if it wasn’t a good idea to stop the fight when Kimbo was getting crucifix’d then was it fair to stop the fight when Thompson was still standing? He could have shot in on Kimbo to defend, he could have backed up Kimbo wasn’t really charging him. I don’t see how you keep defending him on this. You could just be fair and say yes Kimbo showed a lot of holes so hopefully he takes the Grim fight and he works on those problems. You keep trying to legitimize that this is his third fight. Well look at it like this, would he survive on TUF? Those guys are all relative new comers and would he survive with them?

Also, I loved Frank Shamrock’s bit about how MMA is about class and respecting your opponent etc…I had flashbacks of his illegal knees to the back of Renzo Gracie’s head then saying after his DQ loss that Renzo was a pussy and that he thought he was there to fight. Silly Frank Shamrock!

I had to laugh when Conviction said " young was easy " I am paraphrasing so dont rip me apart guys. I thought that was unprofessional and what a way to kick the show in the nuts. Especially after not making weight.
I agree with the call in the womans fight- the whole cheek bone moved.

Doctor sucked on the lawler fight.

If I were Thompson I would just cut my ear off.

My only comment to such a horrible and obviously slanted judgment was they stood Thompson and Kimbo up while Thompon had side contril in the second round for not advancing positions(He was in side control working for a cricifex but was not moving foward???Since when is wide control not and aggessive position? Then Kimbo ate elbows for the better of almost 2 full minutes with no defense, no call by the ref even though from our vantage point he taps, maybe he didn’t, Then Thompson gets hit with 4 punches one which blows open the amazingly hypnotic cauliflower ear and they call the fight.

Now he has to fight Grimm….Bring it on. Thompson has been known to have a glass chin, not Grimm. Grimm will expose Kimbo and destroy him.

Gary Show needs to put Kimbo in the boxing ring. Get him out of MMA. In his YouTube videos, he fights by boxing rules, not MMA (no hits while an opponent is down, no kicks, no ground game, etc.). Then Kimbo can rely 100% on his big punches, Elite XC can go away, CBS can go on promoting sports where no one gets beat up and we can get on with putting our money behind making MMA better.

Overall, this was a bad night for MMA….

The program started with all the commercials, and being accustomed to Pay Per View this irked me, however this is network TV and the commercials are the way to pay the bills so gotta deal with it.

The Announcers: Gus Johnson has no place in MMA: There was no in-depth conversation about the fighters and techniques because he has no experience.

Rodgers fight: The guy has power and if there is any justice in world he should be the Kimbo’s next opponent. But someone please get Rodgers in an English class so he can communicate with us.

Baronni fight: What a clown – watching his entrance was embarrassing. The camera had to pan away multiple times because he kept grabbing his balls. If you are gonna enter like that you better win or at least make it past two minutes of the fight. He disrespected the sport with his entrance / performance and should go hide for a couple years.

Gina fight: First controversial stoppage of the night.

Smith / Lawler: This fight COULD have maybe salvaged the show. The doctor is a joke. Get her the F#@$ outta here. Premature stoppage influenced by the fact this was on network TV – thanks CBS. Five minutes are allowed and Smith wasn’t even afforded that.

Kimbo fight – Holy Crap! Where to start?

First and foremost. What the F%#$ was up with Thompson’s ear. That wasn’t even cauliflour ear, it was a sack of blood and fluid. How the hell do you go into a fight like that? Drain that thing – it looked like another appendage. It was inevitable that it was gonna explode.

Kimbo’s entrance was alright until his idiot posse showed up behind him. Gotta get rid of those clowns – gives the sport a bad image.

Thompson had the right game plan I just wish he trained to execute it. Kimbo has absolutely NO ground skills. To any person with MMA experience it was clearly obvious. He didn’t even utilize BASIC ground techniques and should have been mounted five or six times. I’m not sure how Thompson trained for this fight because he appeared he didn’t realize Kimbo had absolutely no guard, half guard, or mount defense – seeing Thompson miss these HUGE opportunities was painful to watch. The lack of basic ground techniques is a point / flaw of Kimbo’s that would have been discussed in depth by real announcers. Thompson’s ground game was maybe a 1.5 out of 10. Kimbo’s ground game is about a -5 out 10.

Kimbo was kicked once during the fight and almost fell out of the ring and I think he tapped for the first time when he was caught in the guillotine. Can anyone expand on the guillotine tap for me? I didn’t see the second tap because that must have been when CBS panned away to the arena shot.

The fight should have been stopped at the 9th elbow that Kimbo ate. At the end of the second round Kimbo took 30 of the 60 seconds to get up and make it back to his corner. which was not a good sign. He also had a look of desperation and exhaustion in his face. There seemed to be a hush silence in the arena too…

Finally, the stoppage, nothing new to add. Its all been said in previous posts but its definitely one of the five controversial moments of this fight (guillotine tap, side control stand up, ground and pound tap, unanswered elbows). What the F$%# – I think the fix was in.

Kimbo and Shaw have big problems ahead of them: Kimbo’s gotta fight Rodgers or Bigfoot next – Either way he loses the fight. Have him fight Rodgers and then Shaw can at least explain that Kimbo was knocked out by a lucky punch and maybe retain some shelf life for Kimbo and the organization. Match Kimbo with Bigfoot and its all over – he’ll really be exposed; worse than he was tonight. Any other match up will be viewed as a bigger fix than Cantrell, Abbott, and Thompson. Shaw needs to find another cash cow – maybe Cung Lee can help but I don’t think he’ll be able to save the sinking ship.

GREAT recap. The only thing I would add is about Rodgers “clan” too, they were worse than Kimbos. Talking $%#^ and throwing up signs while he was being interviewed. Like I said earlier, these guys are supposed to be, or should at least WANT to be professionals, so they need to act like it, as well as the people around them. The crap that was pulled by these two groups was horrid.

I agree with both posts. The posses have got to go. You need a corner man, a coach, maybe one other person. Why the hell do you need six to eight guys that act like jackasses?

I watched the fight again and feel I need to retract one thing to be fair: Kimbo didn’t tap on the guillotine choke.. He was about to but didn’t….

But after second review, that ref made some horrendous calls. The stand up from side control and then asking Kimbo if he was ready two times. He didn’t even acknowledge Thompson. What a sham. Kimbo was struck with at least 15 unanswered elbows while trapped on the fence – if it were anywhere else and anyone else the fight would have stopped. Watching the stoppage again is frustrating; The crowds reaction says it all to… That ref has a lot to answer for and hopefully someone, like Dana, calls him to the mat on it….

First off, Kimbo isn’t a skilled martial artist, but he is a rugged fighter and entertaining to watch. Most importantly, he’s bringing attention to Mixed Martial Arts. So to everyone that thinks they’re a bad ass because they watch UFC and can identify a couple fighting moves, just calm the F@&k down.

People need to remember that this was only Kimbos 3rd fight and really was his first against an opponent that could even test his overall skill set. Cantrell was a cakewalk for Kimbo and so too was Tank who pretty much looked like he just fell of a bar stool and into the cage.
Thompson however is bigger, stronger and more exprienced than Kimbo and it showed. Kimbo couldnt just punch his way out of trouble. The strength of Thompson was more than Kimbo bargained for. I do think Kimbo was very close to putting JT on his back but I think more from a combo of exhaustion and a few shots to the face rather than just Kimbos punching power. Both fighters looked very tired. The fight should not have been stopped when it was. I think if Kimbo could have put him on the mat then JT would have had a hard time getting back to his feet just as Kimbo would have been done if Thompson had gotten just one more take down. Regardless, Kimbo has a lot of learning to do before becoming a top 25 HW. Right now I dont see him beating any decent heavyweight that is versed in BJJ. I just dont see it. No doubt he has the KO power to knock just about anyone out but you can only go so far with that and I think Kimbo realizes now. Not yesterday before the figtht but rather ……now. He has a long way to go. As for his next opponent, who knows? Im sure management will be very careful of selecting Kimbos next opponent. Kind of a catch 22. If Kimbo doesnt fight guys with ground game then how is he going to get the expreience and if he does then Elite runs the risk of getting their superstar exposed for what he really is. A mid level HW with HEAVY HANDS and NO GROUND GAME. On top of that his fan interest peaked and people saw that KIMBO is definitely human and very very beatable. Alot of HYPE and not much to show for it.

Just started watching the Kimbo fight on Youtube and had to switch off. What a shameful displya of MMA. Crowd calling for them to be stood up after 5 seconds of being on the mat. Announcers calling each move 10 seconds after it had been done or applied like they are looking at a guidebook to see what it is. Kimbo announced like he was a superhero & Thompson like they had found him outside 20 mins before hand. That show is a disgrace to MMA and proved Kimbo to be the Hype that he is.

Give Kimbo Some God Damn Credit. he fought his ass off. I give respect to every mma fighter and i dont talk down towards any of them so dont call me nutthugger. Proper term is " a fan"

kimbo was an embarrasment. I think even more of an embarassment was the referee. Every newbie fan here is talking about his ear. blood not in his face, threw punches back, took everything kimbo could dish in the first and still round 1 and 2( if anyone thinks kimbo won round 1 and 2 please dont respond) and had the balls to slap the bitch ass referee. he was intelligently defending himself. He could have survived 5 minutes and was screwed.

side from thier record .. just going by thier skills

Kimbos a great striker, heavy hands with little ground game so he gets hatted on.

Rickson Gracie a submission expert with no striking skills and he’s gods gift to mma.

Why does kimbo get insulted on daily basis while people are prasing Rickson like hes the next big thing.

by sour diesel on Jun 1, 2008 2:06 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

b/c Rickson Gracie has probably trained in BJJ since he was in a diaper, has probably won many BJJ tournaments, and has fought a handful of MMA fights – he’s paid his due – does half the world know who Rickson Gracie is? Nope.

The people who post on MMA forums are, for the most part, savvy MMA fans. I really doubt people hate Kimbo Slice because of the man personally. IMO, he’s hated on these forums because of the hype he’s given. There are guys with 10 times more skill, who paid 10 times more dues, who get paid d*ck and get little to no TV exposure.

If you paid your dues at your current job for +10 years but the new guy hired 4 months ago got the big promotion, the raise, the nice car, and the corner office – don’t sit here and tell me you wouldn’t be a bit pissy.

Kimbo is not a great striker, he’s nothing special he’s just a street fighter with heavy hands, i don’t think he has much skill. You say it like he’s an expert in striking which he isn’t.

Rickson Gracie on the other hand is respected because he is a phenomanal athlete with actuall technical skill, i mean he has 400 victories in Jiu-Jitsu tournaments, freestyle wrestling & Sambo.

Rickson is a expert in his field, lets look at Kimbo he’s been in a few street fights one of which he lost to a out of shape cop, and then 3 mma bouts and you call him a great striker? I wouldn’t even put him in my top 10 000 strikers. You ask people about Ground Fighting/Ju Jitsu and most people would say Rickson is one of the best and rightly so. Kimbo couldn’t even KO a guy who most people nickname “Glassjaw” haha. You logic is seriously flawed sour diesel.

Butterbean knocked this guy out in the first round. Win or loss, Kimbo has lost some of his hype. We cant even know how much he has improved recently because his other fights have only displayed his heavy hands.

All that can be said about Kimbo right now is that he has heavy hands, no ground game or takedown defence. Can he improve to be a decent heavyweight? Well maybe in time but for now he is just a brawler who is beginning to struggle against chumps like Thompson.

As for the promotion it is a joke. The dancers, Busta Rymes (what was that all about), the entrances (reminded me of the WWE), the commentators (Frank was good other than how he bragged about himself), and the stoppages.

The title fight stoppage was terrible and the kimbo fight was questionable. I agree Thompson looked out standing up and the ear was bad. I like how he got mad at the ref, that was hilarious.

As for the Gina fight it probably could have went on but I think it was a good stoppage. Kaitlin didn’t even argue the stoppage. Gina is an animal on her feet man. She destroyed that girl. That last three fights were by far the best but disappointing that there was some controversy. You never want to see a fight end with controversy, especially the first ever on national television.

by MMAFan1981 on Jun 1, 2008 2:51 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I have read that from a few of you wondering why Kimbo gets so much flack from everyone because of his ground game. The answer to that is simple cause EliteXC has built this guy to be some sort of superstar. If he was a fighter working his way up like countless others he would receive a great deal more respect than what he has gotten. Lets face it the guy is really a striker and not a true mixed martial artist yet. He picked up a very tough win maybe stopped a little quickly but a win still the same so I will give him props for that. However EliteXC’s superstar was exposed last night and any if not all future opponents are going to take him to the ground. My guess he loses his next fight unless they put him in with an even worse can.

by Tim on Jun 1, 2008 2:52 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

exactly ,the reason we are hating as people have been saying cause it was fix ,and he was going against so so fighter i wish he was as good as they say but plain and simple truth he is just not go fight in tough man contest thats his skill level right now,he makes more money cause he is the draw for them but that is their own fault they have built their organization on the new tank and as we have seen with tank, once exposed he can’t win everyone will take him down and beat him from there .which was going to be real trained fighters strategy anyway against him so he is screwed until he gets ground defense ,and i saw the same fighter that fought on the internet and thats a shame cause he really does have potential, he just will not capture it

Man I know I will never watch a ElitcXC event in the future. The female superstar can’t make weight, and apparently doesn’t even know what the moves are called. Kimbo…wow. He was beaten and EliteXC made sure he couldn’t lose. Thompson is terrible and he beat Kimbo badly for two rounds then gets hit with a bad stoppage. Kimbo was so out of gas I’m not sure he could have finished no matter how messed up Thompson was. I’m thinking there are probably a couple hundred fighters from all kinds of weights who could beat this can. Sure he will be a great fighter in a few years…when he is almost 40. rotfl.

What a joke.

At least a good WEC event is on tonight.

So I guess Gary Shaw will have to find someone slightly worse than Thompson and slightly better than Tank Abbott for Kimbo to fight so he can continue to cash in on his sub par meal ticket.

watching this fight was like watching rampage vs. lindland in WFA. there was no way they could let their hyped superstar lose and i do believe the ref should be suspended for bias. We heard him on the air, " those punches didnt hurt him". its not his job to judge that. his job is to make sure the safety of the fighters is in tact and make sure they are defending themselves. Levigne, mcCarthy, dean, mazagatti, and yamasaki all would have stopped that fight. I just wish thompson would have punched his face rather than slapping him.

Kimbo Slice Likes to run in and KO a guy early with crazy powerful striking. If he fails to finish the guy off in the first, he seems to gas pretty badly. Other than his stand up, we don’t see that much from him. He also rakes in a lot of hype. Kind of sounds like Baroni should pass the torch. lol

So after watching that shamefull main event last night, is there still anyone who would rather watch kimbo instead of Machida? Pathethic, no other words.

With that said, the fight that could’ve salvaged the night, the Smith-Lawler one of course, was absolutely fantastic. Could, I said, because of course it had to be ruined too. Smith says he can’t see? Give him his damned 5 mintues then! That’s why that rule is there for, you nimwits!

Frustrating, to say the least. But hey, Faber and Lil Evil are going to make up for it big time in a few hours.

Things that make you go hmmmm..

1. Standing Thompson and Kimbo up when Thompson had side control

2. The panning out shout of the arena and strange shot of Thompson yelling at the ref

3. The 15 unanswered elbows that Kimbo received without a stoppage

4. The ref asking Kimbo if he was ok twice after standing them up

5. Kimbo tapping out twice (possibly while in the guillotine and when trapped on the fence)

6. Kimbo’s next opponent – Shaw already said Rodgers will probably not get the fight because its about dollars.

I watched the fight a couple times and didnt see Kimbo tap. I did see him with thumbs up a couple of times. I am by NO MEANS defending him as a fighter he, just my perspective.

The fact that the ref/doctors stopped the fight for an eye poke and didnt stop when Kimbo was clearly not defending the elbows, but then did stop because the guys ear flapping and bloody is kind of strange.

Gina’s fight wasn’t special either. Several times she SHOULD have won via knockout, but she openly admitted to only 3 weeks of training, and came in overweight. she was gassed and only won because her opponent had no business in the cage with her.

The overall of the show was that it was alright. Very questionable finishes, but who knows. Isnt it more likely the second rate company could only afford second rate doctors and second rate refs? Isn’t that more believable than a mass conspiracy about fixing fights to over hype one guy?

by dave on Jun 1, 2008 8:16 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I’m a Kimbo fan.

1) He’s a beginner. He knows it and so do we. Nuff’ said.
2) He was tested. For the most part, he survived the test. Other fighters would have wilted under the pressure. He didn’t panic, he was simply gassed.
3) He’s an exciting fighter and extremely hungry. I can’t hate on him for that. What are you doing with your life? He’s trying to live his dreams. That’s all you can ask for. Give him a break.
4) No, EliteXc is not our preferred entry into mainstream mma representation. That’s life guys, get over it.
5) He’ll get better. As a matter of fact, I was impressed with Kimbo. In many instances he simply picked up his opponent when he was ready to get up.
6) Relax.

by james on Jun 1, 2008 8:42 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I am convinced that aspects of this show were rigged.

1. Where the hell were the normal referees? Dan Mirgliotta did the whole card except for one fight…guess its easier to pay one guy off instead on 4 or 5

2. During the womens fight I swear I heard Kaitlyn Young ask if she “Would still get the money from EliteXC”…then the fight was called once she was answered with a yes.

3. The Kimbo fight was an all out rigged fest…it should have been called first when Kimbo tapped…and then again in late Round 2 when Kimbo wasn’t defending himself intelligently…then it gets stopped for a busted ear and a few punches that didn’t even take Thompson down..I mean he still had wits enough to spit on the ref and slap him..plus Thompson should have not been in a main event…he lost his last two fights AND the guy who beat him was delegated to the under card…I wonder why? Oh its because they are trying to build a MMA league around someone who IS NOT an MMA fighter!

4. Did anyone else notice that at points during the Kimbo fight (RIGHT AFTER HE TAPPED FOR INSTANCE) and several other times in the night CBS cut to wide shots of the arena FOR NO REASON? I believe this was to try and cover some things up that were clearly botched and/or rigged.

This telecast was an INSULT to real MMA fans and exactly why Dana would not deal with CBS and why he constantly calls Gary Shaw and idiot. Just a side note..the announcing was hard to listen to. How the hell can you put some guy who usually calls basketball games be the LEAD COMMENTATOR of a complex sport he never ever calls! I for one will boycott and not be watching this trash! BOOOOOO!

good try with the fight fixing comments…but i dont buy it. Kimbo is clearly giving a thumbs up and there is no possible way you can say that james thompson said “he tapped” BS. Im not saying that I support Elite XC nor Kimbo, the UFC provides quality fighting in a very young sport. Wait another 10 years. MMA will be huge. A lot of these guys have only been studying jiu-jitsu a couple years.

CBS is trying to make a buck, but the fact that everyone is talking about the ‘controversy’ is only making it more popular. The fights were sloppy but entertaining. Leave it alone. If you dont like it, dont watch it. It as simple as that.

by HW on Jun 2, 2008 10:38 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The people that are saying the event was horrible, that they sold out, that their were bad stoppages are really not looking at the big picture. This was the first MMA event held on primetime network t.v.Do you even understand how ground-breaking that is? You’re talking about a sport that has been banned in several states. A sport that had to make it’s way from pay per view (and i’m not talking about the big time ppv events like they have now, I’m talking about thats the only place they would allow it) to home videos, to years later Spike (thank you Dana White) to now CBS. The sport has grown from a high school gym event to an arena monster. This is just the next step in the evolution. To those of you who have never seen a Elite XC event on Showtime, they always have the dancing girls and pyro; that wasn’t anything new. To the people that complain about the commercials and the ads, take in to consideration the fact that there are no major company sponsors in the world of MMA because corporations are scared to associate themselves due to the mainstream’s negative image of MMA.The fact that they could get those advertisements is another great and groundbreaking feat. And as far as bad stoppages, I personally knew coming in to the show that because this was on national t.v. and because MMA is still controversial that they wanted to make a good impression and there were probably going to be no chances taken and some questionable calls made. That should have been obvious. Having said that, the only fight that was definetly stopped too early was the Lawler/Scott fight. That was rediculous. And they could have probably let the first one go on a little longer (2-3 more punches from Rogers) but when a fight is stopped and a guy stays on the ground and doesn’t get up and complain, the ref probably made the right call. The point is, if you want to take a chance and try something as revolutionary as putting MMA on network t.v., it’s obvious there will have to be some compromise. But you have to accept that if you want to do it. Of course maybe someone like Dana White wouldn’t have compromised, but thats why the UFC is on Spike and pay-per-view and not CBS.If anything you should give Gary Shaw a ton of credit for taking a promotion in one year this far. There will be more Elite XC events on CBS and you can expect them to gradually ease up on the restraints. With the exception of the Robbie Lawler fight that was shaping up to be a classic, I think anyone who trashes this event is not a real MMA fan and more of a drunken idiot who wants to see nothing but mayhem and blood and sh*t blowing up. I’m all for it. I’m as hardcore as the next guy, but remember how we have to act when we are in public or else they’ll never let us in.
