A little too early to start drinking?

by James S on May 30, 2008 1:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I love the UFC, but…you pretty much needed to be drunk to enjoy the card. Betweeen the dissapointing stoppage w/B Vera and the second point taken from N. Marquardt….what a bore!!! The Bisping fight wasn’t good enough to be on Spike and Matt Hughes looks to be on his way out! I will say the undercard fights after the Main Event were better than most of the main action!!

Now I know why this wasn’t free on Spike…..Between the Elite XC/CBS and this poor UFC Card….the average guy would never buy another PPV again!!

This card is on my birthday, and considering I’ve been sober 2 1/2 years (I know, I’m a quitter), I guess this card will be my birthday gift. I like Bisping and Vera, and always look for an opportunity to see Hughes get beat (even though it happens rarely).

On a side note, I really hope that after Kimbo’s fight this sat, they put him against a top 50 opponent. I promise if he fights Mike Tyson, Gannon or Ken Shamrock, I will cancel my showtime subscription, and not watch another elite show (except Nick Diaz. Even if he fought Ricco Rodriguez, I’d respect him more. I give him credit for training, being humble and soft spoken, but I would have a chance at beating the guys he’s fighting.

Good luck w/ that Vicodin scrip….in almost 18 years I’ve seen countless people in sobriety led to destruction w/ a few painkillers…anyway……
WAR Hughes, and if he loses he is done, except for a couple more paydays….Vera may be shut up w/ another loss to a real heavyweight…. and I really don’t have anything against The count, but I really wanted to see him against Leben, he will get past Day and then I look forward to him fighting someone legit, but all these middleweights have to look forward to is The Spider, sucks to be them…….I’m a little sick as I’d like to see Kimbo fight Shamrock, Ken would finally get a win a good paycheck from the sport he helped to found, would not begrudge him gettin paid

It’s never too early to start drinking. We used to work mid-shifts and start catching a buzz at 7 AM. Now that is a weird sensation. A “good morning world, passed out by 3 PM” day.

I’m still not sure if I’m going to get this event. Probably because of the time difference.

I couldn’t agree more, don’t buy this fight if you think it blows, Dana is just trying to sell some Lemonade… I’m looking forward to Swick Vs. Davis, I think it could be a great fight. I still can’t believe Alves is headlining but what can you do

by Arnold on May 30, 2008 1:07 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i agree mania! it not like ufc had this card in mind when they firts came up with it!! this card was effing amazing when it started up. but Dana and zuffa can not control the element of fighter life’s and injuries..to be honest they did a great job in saving the card! it would have been a disaster to cancel it. non the less it will be a sell out crowed. you ppl shame me as mma fans…the britsh dont care…they just love fights. The british fans are always there for mma. and im not even british and i hate brits! but they are stting the example here.

by santiago69us on May 30, 2008 1:16 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

yo geazer u talk shit!! im british and every brit fan i know is comaplainignand wants their money back. its a farce!! origianlly they got chucl lidellvs sogon as the attraction. but carde still sucked. if we had ufc 84 man it wld of been a treat. wandalei, tito,bj penn, sherk, jardine, silva it was awesome. whos in ufc85? matt hughes a has been who been beat by GSP wtice give me a break. ur insulting brits intelligence

by zobondo on May 30, 2008 5:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Sorry dude but nobody cares what the Brit fans want. Its obvious that you don’t know a good card when you have it. I wouldn’t mind having this fight here in America where I might be able to go view it. Your disrespecting a legend who got beat by the number one P4P guy in the sport get a grip dude. You must be new to the sport so people will cut you some slack but you shouldn’t be speaking on behalf of the British people, your making them looking bad

I hear what your saying but I bought the Rashad/Bisping fight thinking I would miss something and just threw $54.99 away. The time difference is whats killing it for me.

by JV on May 30, 2008 1:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Your right, that card wasn’t that great, but on the other hand everyone said the BJ/Stevenson card would suck and I think there were like 7 ko’s and 8 fights televised.

i was at Bisping/Evans i liked that event i dont know y people hate it. the only thing im mad about is that Bisping actually won that fight according to lots of viewers and websites. all those takedowns lasted 1 second cause he got right up. i read that they gave Evans the win because they dont want Bisping to ever get a win in America again or something like that

by Iceberg on Jun 7, 2008 4:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t know about you guys but I think Nate Marquardt vs. Thales Leites is going to be one of the better fights on the card. Most of the fights we will get to see are pretty good, which is what I would rather see than just one or two good fights and the rest are bores.

by Toms Bombs on May 30, 2008 1:26 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

so many doubting this line-up. i bet this is one of the better all-around ufc’s this year.

I don’t think its a plain “if you don’t like it, don’t buy it” argument to be made here. MMA fans constantly have to watch out what they can get for their buck and in times of WEC with Faber-Pulver, DREAM4 and Affliction card coming up, its wise to consider spending a limited budget on cards that sound promising.

After the rather weak card in ireland and this card I really hope the UFC will visit europe the next time with a championship fight again. Watching the event on TV is fine, but I’d rather go watch it live in an arena again, as – I am sure – most british/european fans would like to.

by YouTapped on May 30, 2008 1:44 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

It’s not like the UFC didn’t try.

The main event — ideally — was going to be St. Pierre vs. Fitch. Then Henderson vs. Franklin. And I’m sure Anderson Silva was considered … but his only real challenger at this point is Yushin Okami, who is recovering from a broken hand.

So to get Hughes vs. Alves is not that bad when you put it into perspective, in addition to the other solid main card bouts.

UFC 85 was a victim of circumstance. And all things considered this main card turned out solid.

by MMAmania on May 30, 2008 2:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Agreed about the original card, but still: people bought the tickets with St.Pierre or maybe Franklin in mind. Some friends of mine who planned on going sold their tickets on ebay with losses and I can also understand their frustration.

You are right about it being solid – in my opinion due to the Swick-Davis and Vera-Werdum fights – but then again its a relative term considering the other cards we got upcoming.

by YouTapped on May 30, 2008 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thats why it always says “card subject to change”. its the price you pay buynig tickets so early before the event. either you wait until the card is close and risk not getting tickets, or you buy them early and risk not seeing the matches you want due to various circumstances.

I wonder how Matt Hughes is gonna win? Is he gonna win by decision or tko? I’ll go with a unanimous decision victory with all three judges scoring it 30-27 in favor of Hughes.

While there are some tomato can worthy opponents on this card, I’d look to Marquardt/Leites or Swick/Davis as a great fight, if not great marketing. Neither will increase ppv buys to the casual observer or armchair quarterback. We’ll leave that up to elite xc as they pull out all the stops by opening the show with Busta (? insert snide remark). That said, I’ll take Bisping/Day for $1000, alex. Us good ‘ole canadian boys know a wee bit more about “dooms” day. Perhaps it’s a homer bet, but I’ll go with day at +260. Call it a hunch… hehehe. Begin your ridicule now gentlemen…

mate you could not be any further from being correct as far as Bisping/Day, Bisping completely gave him a lesson in MMA overpowering him in every aspect of fighting.Like i have heard from one or two others said Bisping could have finished this earlier but chose to give him more punishment rather than finishing him with a choke or a couple of other holds he could of put him in.Anyway great fight from Bisping ,he is looking very menacing.

Great bill I think. Hughes vs Alves COULD be a classic.
Vera is one of my fave fighters and Werdum is no joke despite his Arlovski fight.
Marquardt vs Leites could be a cracker.
Swick vs Davis another good fight maybe :)
Sanchez vs Hardonk is a good match up shame it’s not on the main bill.

Well you don’t hear anything, you read it so you don’t have to read it if you don’t want. But honestly with all of the switches they’ve had this should have been free on spike. Not saying that it isn’t PPV worthy but a nice treat for the hardcore fans would be nice. Not to mention making it free on Spike a week after the XC promotion would give them better ratings. Its a business move gone wrong but I’ll still be viewing this matchup

by clayton on May 31, 2008 1:02 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

On paper people may say it sucks because it lacks supposedly ‘big fights’ but………
I was at Nations Collide in Manchester last year and the main card looked very good. When infact 3 of the 5 main fights were shite. (congo/silva, arlovski/werdum, machida/heath). The undercard was, on paper, going to be borin but all 5 fights were very entertaining. Dont write this card off as you could be suprised.

I can’t remember to well but did mania say a while back that you could watch on setanasports.com for free? And/or is it on setant sports the channel for free over here in UK? Coz i remember the deal with setana was suppose to start with ufc 86 right? Unless im just confused lol but any clarifaction would be nice, suppose i could just watch it on sopcast if its not free in uk.

Quick update:

http://dnevnik.hr/sport/ostali_sportovi/cro-cop-zbog-ozljede-odgodio-borbu.html

CroCop has cancelled the grappling match due to a light injury. He could have competed, but to him getting fully recovered for the 21st of july was more important when he will fight Jerome LeBanner.

Too bad, I thought it could be funny, but MMA > pure-grappling in this case, so as long as he has no excuse for a poor performance against LeBanner I am cool with it. The grappling match was definetly not what urged me to buy DREAM 4 in the first place anyway.

by YouTapped on Jun 7, 2008 10:48 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Good! cro cop needs to stick to MMA and forget about grappling. He already took too many blows to his name recently.

My new neighbor just got DSL and has a pretty sweet wirelss connection. Sitting on my porch with the laptop, I get a PERFECT signal. ANd to think that I was just about to call Comcast and add internet because the wife signed up to sell avon.

I wonder when Martin Kampann is fighting. THat’s the only reason I risked ruining results of prelim matches that might be shown later during the PPV…

HAPPY BIRTHDAY KEVIN AND JOHN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thanks everyone. It was a great card. John-Stradamus strikes again.

I lost $500 on Marcus Davis and I still managed to win $275 with my wagering pin point percision.

I bet on:
Leites
Werdum
Marcus Davis
Bisping
Alves

4 out of 5, not bad at all.

Seriously my picks will have to be on sale from here on out because I am just getting scary good at predicting these fights.

VM: Sorry your parlays fell through cause of Hughes…I am getting sick of telling you that alves is the real deal, yet you still ignore him…Get wit it my friend!

by the heat on Jun 7, 2008 9:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Lets be honest though, did Leites really win? I don’t think so and I would bet MOST would agree. You picked Werdum to win, but they NEVER got a chance to see who is better. That was BY FAR the worst stoppage in history. Vera was UNTOUCHED. John ,your other picks were good, but these 2 were as much luck as Werdume and Leites victories were luck that the refs were SNIFFING GLUE. Oh ya , Happy Birthday John and Kevin as well.

by Gord on Jun 7, 2008 10:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Gord, quit hatin on the Brazilians! They’re taking over the UFC and eventually the WORLD! As far as Leites goes, he’s not the one who used illegal moves in the fight. That’s ultimately what made the difference.

by RedDog on Jun 8, 2008 2:37 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thanks to everyone!

As for Leites and Werdum bets….Hey I bet a nice amount of money on both fighters, and I will take the win anyway I can.

IMO, Leites won that Fight. Here me out. It was a very close fight. Because the fight was so close, we have to take into consideration that BIG ILLEGAL Knee. Like Rogan said, weather Leites could continue or not, he would never recover from that knee 100%, so I think THales deserved to win. I will admit that the elbow to the head was not illegal.

As for Werdum…..Did he TKO Vera? NO, but he mounted him and I would say that about 90% of the time a fighter mounts another fighter is usually OVER! In this case, with so little time left in the round, the fight should have not been stopped.

What the hell though, I lost $500 on Davis, I wil take all the wins I can, any way that I could!

John-stradamus just tells you who to bet on, my job isnt to tell you if the decision was fair….U guys asked for the winners, and I delivered 4 out of 5 as USUAL!

Stop Doubting my boy Thiago!

suprised by the werdum/vera fights outcome. vera needs to move to lhw. werdum was just to strong for him. a 245lbs werdum compared to a soft 225 lbs for vera made all the difference. werdum had him in the full mount and vera wasnt trying to get out. werdum is for real and is still relativly young.with wins over g.g. and vera back to back he could probably get the winner of mir/nog, but thats so far from now he might fight again. but who could he fight? the winner of herring/lesnar or maybee kongo, i dont know.

The only weight that had an effect on this fight, was the weight of that SACK OF SHIT that calls himself a ref. I am surprised that anyone could be so deviated from reality, to actually think Werdum legitimately won that fight.

When, I never once heard you say that the fight would be WRONGFULLY stopped. When did you call “Werdum by Refs INCOMPETENCE in the 1st”?

by Gord on Jun 7, 2008 10:35 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Werdum would submit Heath Herring in a heartbeat (remember his terrible takedown defense, and his track record against other submission specialists. Lesnar would be more of a challenge; that’s like a Bob Sapp vs. Minotauro sort of fight. I’d watch it. I view Brock Lesnar with a decent amount of respect so I don’t think that constitutes a freak-show bout of the nature that Bob is accustomed to. Kongo IMO doesn’t deserve a shot at Werdum. Give Vera to Kongo and Werdum to Lesnar and that’s a solid event.

by the heat on Jun 7, 2008 9:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think there was 10 seconds left and by the looks of things, NO Werdum wouldn’t have hurt him AT ALL. Did you miss the slow motion replay? Vera BLOCKED ALL of those shots and suffered NO damage. It was plain and simple, a BOGUS stoppage and that ref should be canned and he shouldn’t even get a cheque for that BS. All Werdum was doing ,was wasting energy. Werdum was the one who got rocked in that SHORT fight, not Vera. Nothing was decided, we need a rematch.

The elbow was DEFINITLY legit and this is another example of pathetic refereeing. Nate won that fight, end of story. Some fights are debatable, this one wasn’t even close to debatable. Is there a glue factory close by to the M.E.N arena, where as the fumes effect the refs and judges perceptions. First Bisping- Hammill and now these 2 fights. We need Big John back.

Thales, not Tiago. But we know what you’re saying. I also think Leites won the first round due to the clear knockdown. He got rocked also but never went down so I think that round is still his. Too bad Herb called the point deduction for the elbow but I think he called it ’cuz Marquardt put himself in that position due to the previous foul. Questionable but IMO understandable. i respect because he did take it but would not if he turned it down like you said he should have. what kind if real fighter would do that?

by AzCombat on Jun 7, 2008 5:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

True but rules are rules. Hughes didn’t need to take the fight. He should never be put in a position where he needs to make the decision. For the reason you stated, he had to take the fight for fear of losing respect. HE SHOULDN’T HAVE BEEN MADE TO MAKE THE DECISION!!

It was like watching UFC 1, The size difference was enormous.

UFC should give Alves the Lutter and Kalib Starnes treatment.

by Automation on Jun 7, 2008 5:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Automation, it wasn’t enormous, it was 4 pounds over. I know alves looks bigger and all, but he was 4 pounds over yesterday, it’s not really that much. Still, he should have made the weight though, after the fight he lied to dana by saying he’s been a good boy and he deserved a title shot, if I were dana I’d have him fight a couple of more times to see if he can make the weight, a champion can never be over the weight!

by linx on Jun 7, 2008 5:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’m just eating sour grapes. I never like to see any fighter humilated and Hughes was humilated.

Yes 4lbs at weigh in but he looked so much bigger at the fight. He must have light weight plastic bones or as Mr NC-17 stated, was fighting at a minimum 185lbs

‘Humiliated’

by Automation on Jun 7, 2008 6:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

linx, 4 lbs is HUGE, if you don’t have to DEHYDRATE your body the day before the fight to lose that last 4 lbs. Look at Joe Riggs, he cut from 200lbs and it showed the next day how drawn out he was. If you want to be WAY bigger you have to sacrifice your performance a bit by draining your body losing that much weight (especialy the last 5 lbs). Tiago didn’t do that, he got the best of both worlds. That and it is obvious that he is cranking. He’s a cheater, any way you look at it.

by Gord on Jun 8, 2008 12:35 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I respect Matt Hughes and all but how can you not respect what Alves did?? He made Hughes look like a scrub! And the 3lbs that he was over in no way helped him win. You my friend are just a sore loser because your fighter got railed! And you wanna know why your golden boy took the fight even with the weight issue? $$$$$$$$$$$$ MONEY – thats the reason…not because he just was trying to be a nice guy…get real!

Terrible. Matt’s a class act and one of the guys that built the UFC to the status it’s at today. Alves is a punk and a disgrace to the sport for not making weight. Part of me wonders if this was staged to set up a good fight for GSP after he runs through Fitch. There’s simply no way Alves beats a wrestler as talented as Hughes that easily.

by Chad on Jun 7, 2008 5:43 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

YES!!! STAGED, STAGED!!! everything nowadays is staged, UFC, EliteXC, Dream, you name it, it’s staged. The referees are bought, so are the judges, and the fighters? Don’t get me started. Hughes probably got 500k to throw that fight and eat that nasty knee to the face and some nice ground and pound. I mean, I’ll take 500k to land on my knee and be almost knocked the F. out! Forget about my reputation as a fighter, money talks! They should just call it WWE and not MMA.

If you haven’t noticed I am being sarcastic, but this is how you conspiracy theorists sound to me… Kind of sad, really.

“Matt Serra you really need to come up with a gameplan now.”

Does anybody else think that Matt Hughes was looking more towards Matt Serra more than Thiago Alves?

Matt Hughes did not look good. He would keep dropping guard and taking huge punches and attempting submissions, which made no sense what so ever to me. Hughes can’t really take down anybody it seems now. I believe that he needs to retire, and I hope Matt Serra dominates him into retirement.

Jason Day looked like shit. Period. Or did Bisping look that good?

Mike Swick is boring at 170.

Marquardt/Leites heck of a fight, and you actually got to see a piledriver performed.

Good Stoppage Dan… Good Stoppage. You stop that fight, but not the Kimbo fight?

by "Mr. NC-17" on Jun 7, 2008 5:50 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i said that matts ego might get in the way, but honestly i dont think it mattered. hughes is a shot fighter. he should retire now. rogan said the fans wanna see hughes/serra, i dont! serra will embaress hughes. you could tell in the 2nd rnd when matt didnt get the takedown he had this look on his like"what do i do now" then alves koed him. hughes was beatwn mentally as well. i think gsp has ruint him. hughes is too 1 dimensional for all these new generation of fighters. no disrepect towards hughes. he was a hell of a fighter for his time and is a sure-fire hof fighter, but his time has passed. alves loked very sharp, but from here on out he has to make weight, no matter what or be suspended. how about KAMPANN VS BISPING. that would be the next logical fight for both. swick vs diego would be a good fight( im assuming he’s gonna beat luigi) vera needs to move down to lhw and get a win quick or he could find himself being cut. this wasnt the best card ever, but it wasnt the worst either. lots of surprises and answers and the marquardt/lietes fight was a classic. def should be a rematch. no boring fights at all really just quick endings.

How is it going to help Vera moving to LHW. Does Dan (I don’t know the first thing about reffing) not make the SAME shitty calls at every weight class. You make it sound like Vera actually loss legitimately.

Matt Hughes, I don’t know what to say. He was humilated. I never like to see any fighter humilated. Its like he is already retired and just going through the obligations of his contract.

Jason Day looked shit because Bisping made him look shit. People under estimate how hard Bisping hits. Day was wanting none of his strikes.

Mike Swick still done a good job of Davis’ face. His game plan was bang on. Davis did not expect take downs.

This bullshit UFC ppv in England sucks. What the hell was that fight between Nate and Thales? After he got pile drived by Nate, he still won!!!!!!! That is what I call

GROSS MISCONDUCT ON THE PART OF BRIT JUDGES

Just like they gave Bisping the win over Hammil, which was just as bad.

So Bisping won, WHO FUCKEN CARES? He won against a nobody Davis debuting his FIRST FIGHT, and we are supposed to be proud of Bisping?

Why doesn’t Dana give Bisbing a decent fighter to fight like Silva, who will crush his ugly Brit face in and actually hopefully improve his rotten face and attitude.

Bisping dropped down a division cuz he knows that he can’t beat Forest or Tito.

Sincerely

Sunny

BTW, Vera got fucked over ROYALLY

by sunny santoro on Jun 7, 2008 6:04 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Nate/Thales – Not much the judges can do about Marquardt being deducted (and rightfully so) 2 points by the ref for illegal strikes. Heck, I’m shocked one judge still gave it to Marquardt.

Bisping fought Day, not Davis, and this was not his fight debut. This was his second fight in the UFC, and he was coming into the fight with Bisping on a 5 fight hot streak with wins over Loiseau and Belcher. And I don’t think Bisping should get Anderson Silva just because you want to see his face get smashed in – let him earn a fight with the champ.

I will say Vera did get screwed over though.

by Jase on Jun 7, 2008 10:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Rightfully so my ass. 1 point was fair for the knee, but the slow motion replay (something they should start using to counter blind refs, bad calls) clearly showed it was a LEGAL strike to the SIDE of the head. Even with the 1 point lost, Nate clearly won the fight.

by Gord on Jun 8, 2008 1:37 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not what I saw. Maybe I’d have to see the replay again. First time I saw it, it looked like he clipped the back of Leites’ head, justifying the point deduction. Not a bad call. Which means Marquardt needs to be more careful and pay more attention when he starts unloading on people.

Thiago Alves defeats Matt Hughes –
I just think the fight game has evolved from Hughes. He beat up guys left and right. Used his power to beat people. But the other fighters got stronger, better skilled, and Hughes eventaully got older.

Micheal Bisping defeats Jason Day -
Bisping looked scary good. Who’s next? Rich Franklin? Then title shot?

Mike Swick defeats Marcus Davis –
Swick came to fight. He looked a lot better than his first fight against Burkeman. Who’s next? Swick vs. Alves gets a title shot? How about Swick vs. Karo – lotsa fireworks potential.

Thales Leites defeats Nate Marquardt –
Man! Fight of the night no doubt!

Frabrico Werdum defeats Brandon Vera -
Brandon, drop to 205lbs now buddy. There are no more superfights for you in the HW division. More interesting matchups at 205.

Martin Kampmann defeats Jorge Rivera -
Hitman was on. Slick jits. Wasn’t this guy going to fight Rich Franklin before his knee blew out? Man he looked good.

Matt Wiman defeats Thiago Tavares –
Heart! Who can forget that knee to the face he took from Spencer Fisher. KO of the night IMO.

Kevin Burns defeats Roan Carneiro -
BJJ blue belt taps the BJJ black belt. Carneiro isn’t gonna hear the end of this from his BJJ camp.

by TABSCOsauce on Jun 7, 2008 6:05 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Alves/Hughes – Gotta agree. And I was somebody who thought Alves would get crushed in this fight. It looks like everyone’s figured out Hughes by now – avoid the takedown. Making me really curious how the Serra/Hughes fight will play out now…

Bisping/Day – Franklin…I guess that depends on how Rich fares against Hendo. Me, I wanna see Bisping take on Leben next before anybody else.

Swick/Davis – He looked better than he did against Burkman, but this fight was still kind of a dud IMO. As for who he should take on next…how about Diego. it would be funny to see if all AKA team members get a win over Sanchez.

Leites/Marquardt – Some nice action, and a sick looking piledriver from Marquardt, but too much illegal activity from Nate for me to consider this fight of the night.

Werdum/Vera – While i think the fight was stopped early, I agree that Vera should take this as a hint to finally drop to 205.

Kampmann/Rivera – Yeah, it was originally supposed to be Franklin/Kampmann instead of Franklin/Okami IIRC. If Kampmann racks up a few more wins, I could see him getting into title contention.

Wiman/Tavares – Awesome comeback for Wiman. He’s never looked better than he did when he took the fight to Thiago and knocked him out.

John, you must have psychic abilities to know that Leites would win even though he LOST. Nate PROVED he is the better fighter to all but the blind. Also how did you know the Vera fight would be stopped when Vera didn’t lose by ANY definition of the rules. He didn’t get subbed, he didn’t tap (actually the opposite, he said he was OK), his safety wasn’t in jeopardy and he didn’t even have a scratch on him. I wouldn’t take credit for these 2 picks, because Nate won and Vera didn’t lose. Good job on the others though.

Every PPV people complain about terrible match-ups and only having only five “televised” fights. Once again, if the fighters deliver and finish we will get to see the extra fights. Today, eight of the eleven were shown in their entirety and two of the remaining three had their finishes shown. Once again, the “this card is a joke” PPV delivered a solid amount of entertainment.

That said, I can’t wait until the “These guys are underpaid” comments in a couple days in the pay-out thread.

Very impressed with Bisping and glad he is adding depth to MW division now. That along with the return of the Hitman and 185 isn’t so thin anymore. Some good potential match-ups possible.

I hope that Vera now realizes that he has to drop to LHW!! The fact that the ref (Miragliotta) stopped the Vera fight but did not stop the Ferguson fight when he was getting pummelled for 45 seconds proves that the Ferguson – Thompson fight was fixed. Vera only has himself to blame though as he put himself at the ref’s discretion. Objectively, overall this was not one of the UFC’s better cards.

My thoughts on UFC 85 -

Vera/Werdum: I picked Vera to win this, so I was naturally disappointed to see him lose. I think the fight was ended prematurely. Sure, Werdum was kicking Vera’s ass and was raining down the ground and pound, but he never really had him hurt and there were only a couple of seconds left in the round. I suppose it doesn’t help matters since this was the same ref involved in the Kimbo Slice/James Thompson fight.

Marquardt/Leites: I thought this one could go either way initially. It’s a shame about the point deductions costing Marquardt the decision, but this is one time I agree with the refs since he blatantly kneed Leites, and you could see his fists kept on grazing the back of his head. Pretty cool looking piledriver slam by Nate, but by this point the card isn’t off to the best of starts.

Swick/Davis: Looks like training with Fitch and Koscheck has really paid off for Swick. This was another fight where the guy I was rooting for lost. Davis should have done more to keep the fight standing though. It was clear after the first round he’d be at Swick’s mercy off his back. This fight was the one I was looking forward to the most, but was also the biggest disappointment in my eyes. It just wasn’t as explosive a contest as you’d imagine judging from the names of the fighters involved. While this was better than the Burkman for fight for Swick, it still paled in comparison to most of his past fights and I’m starting to wonder if I’ll ever really see Quick Swick in action again. He’s just not as exciting to watch as he used to be.

Bisping/Day: Bisping really impressed me here. While I picked Bisping to win this one, I expected the guy who demolished Alan Belcher to put up a much tougher fight for him. A lot of respect I lost for Bisping in the Hamill fight is slowly creeping back in. Still gotta give props to Day though for stepping in there. And I really hope they can make Leben Bisping’s next opponent like he was supposed to be for this card, that’s a fight I really want to see happen!

Hughes/Alves: Wow – Did NOT expect to see that. I totally picked Hughes to take this fight and refused to jump on the Matt Hughes is over bandwagon(I mean, come on, his last two losses were to GSP for crying out loud). But damn, Alves looked good in there. Good sprawl, and a devastating knee. I still think Hughes has a couple of fights left in him, so I’m glad he’s not retiring before he takes on Serra. And Alves asking for a title shot – heh, you might NOT want to ask the president of the company for a title shot when you came in overweight to this one, no matter how your performance was. No one wants another Travis Lutter or Joe Riggs situation.

Undercard fights -

Lambert/Cane: Lambert looked out of shape. That’s all there really is to say about this one.

Wiman/Tavares: Man, I didn’t give Wiman a chance in hell here. Tavares was taking it to him in the first, but he came back strong in the second and scored a great knockout.

Kampmann/Rivera: Nice to see ring rust wasn’t an issue for Kampmann in his return fight after a years absence. I think he could potentially become a contender.

Overall: Not a bad way to spend an afternoon at the sports bar, but this was not one of the UFC’s better fight cards, and UFC 86 looks to only have a title match over this one. UFC 87 can’t get here fast enough IMO.

I mean doesn’t it show now that all those guys who dominated an the past and are still young enough to compete who cant get past the commisions without getting popped on a test. Who wont risk it because it will erase all there wins in the past, dont do so well anymore. It seems fishy to me.

by Kahaluu Caz!!!!!! on Jun 7, 2008 10:34 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

And the HUGE size increase in Alves doesn’t seem fishy to you? Come on, if anyone is taking performance enhancing drugs, it is Alves. Alves’s steroid bloated head seems pretty fishy to me.

by Gord on Jun 8, 2008 2:24 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hate to say it, but when one fighter has greatly improved in strength steriods always come to mind. Also, Hughes is not getting any better, he’s past his prime and took his talent as far as he could go, he made a great Champion n’ Ashole… fight Matt Serra and maybe BJ then hang it up.

Younger good fighters entering the UFC from about 4 yrs ago are now starting to peak in their mid 20’s to 30… it’s their time now.

by THORAZINE on Jun 8, 2008 4:47 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I say hughes still got it to go against serra, but bj is way out of his league…

by linx on Jun 8, 2008 7:32 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Matt just dont have any answer to the atlethisism, power, skill level, and the killer instinct to finish fights that young guys like Thiago Alves, and GSP does.. It would have been a upset if Hughes could’ve avoided Alves powerful strikes for 3 rounds to me.. to be honest i believe that a guy like Anthony Johnson would take Matt Hughes out also, and so would Koscheck and Diego Sanchez too..

Hughs got beat up, I hoped he would win to pump the Serra a fight a little but I’ll still watch it. Alves was really impressive.

Bisping should fight Patrick Cote next to test Bisping’s chin. If he gets past Cote let him fight Franklin or Henderson.

Hughes is a shoe in UFC hall of famer and im a huge fan of his. He needs a different gameplan cuz everyone is on par with his wrestling skills and his strength which used to be his advantage over other fighters. Deff needs to work on his striking thats the biggest hole in his game is the striking offense and defense. I dont think Thiago’s weight had much to do with it although he prob put on about 10 pds since the weight in before the fight. The sport in itself is evolving fast and growing so some fighters like hughes that were unstoppable 2 or 3 years ago now are being outclassed by the up and coming fighters that are extremely well rounded. Its not to late to round out Hughes’s game unless he thinks it is. His wrestling and BJJ are great he should focus on the striking mainly. I dont credit him not being able to secure takedowns much anymore to him lacking in that area i credit it to extremely talented fighters with great sprawls or defense. If Hughes had lawler like striking capabilites he would be near unstoppable lol. but thats not gonna happen i know. Thiago is the real thing but i need to see him fight someone up his alley a little more style wise before they start thinking title shot. hughes lost and as a fan i can except that lol every fighter wins and loses thats part of the sport really any sport for that matter. And if your gonna be a fan ya have to get used to excepting the losses along with the wins. I still think he will beat Serra but its a good matchup so i hope its a great fight.

by Thor1982 on Jun 7, 2008 11:10 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

You need to see Thiago fight someone else before he gets a title shot? He just won 6 straight including back to back wins over Karo and Hughes respectively I think thats all you need to get a title shot. Had Davis one today you could have argued he was next in line though. I guess you could have Schwick fight Alves though he did beat Burkman and Davis and had a pretty solid streak going before losing to Okami at middleweight.

Did they even mention the fact that Alves came in 4 lbs over during the broadcast?

by Reilly on Jun 8, 2008 12:26 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Hughes is a team player and has come through for the UFC to provide exciting main events when other fighters have gotten injured or couldn’t make weight. Unfortunately, it has worked to his own detriment. He let GSP fill in when Matt Serra got injured. I think Hughes would have beaten Serra, but he lost to GSP. Alves could not make weight for this fight and looked much bigger than Hughes. But Hughes would never refuse to take the fight and ruin the night for the UFC and it’s fans, even though Alves was much bigger and stronger than him. But no one will remember Matt for being a good guy and taking both these fights. All that will be remembered is that he lost them both and that this has probably ended his career.

by DrPepper on Jun 8, 2008 12:38 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I dont think his career is over I still see him fighting Serra but that will probably be the last one no real reason to keep fighting after he fights Serra.

by GSP4Prez on Jun 8, 2008 4:37 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

ill remember him for being a classy athlete, loyal to his fans, hardworking, far too religious and willing to take a shitty fight (for him) anytime. and a little red behind the ears

what funny to me is all this talk about Bisping vs Franklin or Hendo. Bisping hasnt fought anyone worth a shit.he lost to Evans and anyone with any since know Matt Hamill beat him too and got the shaft. So i say yes, let him fight hendo or franklin,so i can see him lose BADLY and all this over hype Bisping bs will come to an end. Vera got shafted tonight as well.

by jdawg on Jun 8, 2008 1:35 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

What hype around Bisping????

Everyone has been hating on him. So you now think Day wasn’t a reputable opponent??

You’ll always hate Bisping no matter what, probably like I’ll hate on Alves.

All the fighters always say or even have a motto ’Don’t leave it to the judges’ for the reason that the judges are unpredictable with their judging. We can’t hate Bisping for the Hamill call.

Bisping would easily hang with Franklin, not sure about Hendo just yet though.

Give the guy a break!!

by Automation on Jun 8, 2008 4:20 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

LOL Bisbing would get destroyed by Franklin. Hendo or Franklin would destroy him he’s not that good, name a top 10 fighter he’s actually beat.

by GSP4Prez on Jun 8, 2008 4:34 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

We’ll see!

I assume you’re Canadian with you hating on Day losing lol ;)

by Automation on Jun 8, 2008 5:00 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i dont hate Bisping im neutral with him. i hate GSP. im not from Canada either. im 6ft 4in 250lbs of meat eating 100% ALL AMERICAN MALE MACHO ASSHOLE thank you!!!!

by jdawg on Jun 8, 2008 2:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I hope, jdawg, you are calling yourself an asshole and not me. I was responding to GSP4Prez.

With a name like GSP4Prez, I assumed he was canadian which would explain his dislike of Bisping beating Day and outright hating of Bisping in general.

Like it or not, Bisping would easily hang with Franklin. They are at diferent directions with their careers and passing by each other i.e. Franklin on the way down and Bisping on the way up. Bisping is faster and hits hard.

by Automation on Jun 8, 2008 3:56 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i was referring to my myself with the asshole comment and was not calling you an asshole.i do believe that if you think Bisping hits harder than Rich you may be a little loco. no reason to get offended

by jdawg on Jun 8, 2008 8:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No problem jdawg, I was about to unleash my wife on you ;) lol.

I’m not saying he hits as hard as Rich, but he does hit hard and is quicker than Rich.

Gentlemen, this is a perfect example of why I don’t bet. I would’velost my ass on this card! Begrudgeingly (sp?) I give kudos to Bisping. It’s time for him to start calling people out! I’d love it if he called out Leben! He beats him, then maybe I’m a believer.

It is amazng that Mirglitta remains employed. Bad fight stoppages, standing up fighter while they are in aggresive floor positions. Some of the stuff I have seen him call over the last 2 weeks have been absurd…

chefdaddy! i told you as bisping will keep winning he will beat them all including franklinl and get a title shot.

by Tony on Jun 8, 2008 9:06 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Im f**king sick of this shit people still talk shit about bisping! he is on the verge of them big fights now so give it a little time! but you are dreaming if you think Leben can beat Bisping. Bisping will beat Frabklin then get silva thats how i see it playing out after the Leben fight.

the UFC is really hyping vera because of pure business aspect..because of manny pacquiao in lightweight boxing. pacquiao got 500T ppv numbers in his last fight… so the ufc wants that same crowd(theres an estimated 2 Million filipinos in the u.s) to buy its ppv…filipino market. and combine that with the american established ufc market..then theyll make a lot of money… but it backfired because he lost… im filipino and support vera.BUT DAMN he makes so many excuses!!!!!..he had the golden opportunity to k’o tim silva..and get the title.but he broke a thumb boooowhooowhoo… now he got mounted and he’s saying— let him take his woopin in 20 seconds….a lot of tough talk but i think he lacks the heart… he told everybody he trains 6 hours a day but was clearly gassed against silva…. i think its the fear factor(fear makes you tight and you tire quickly)….
