UFC 84 medical suspensions and injuries

If a fighter didn't break his nose last weekend at UFC 84: "Ill Will" at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, then he is perhaps in the minority.
The Nevada State Athletic Commission (NSAC) recently issued its medical suspensions for the pay-per-view (PPV) event that took place on Saturday, May 24, revealing that Keith Jardine (possible), Wilson Gouveia, Kazuhiro Nakamura and Jason Tan all sustained nasal fractures in their respective bouts.
In addition, Tito Ortiz appears to have injured his left hand and wrist during his light heavyweight bout with Lyoto Machida, which will require X-rays and clearance from an orthopedic doctor before returning to competition.
Here's the complete list of injuries and their medical instructions:
Sean Sherk -- "The Muscle Shark" is suspended until July 9 and there is no contact until June 24 because of a right cheek laceration.
Keith Jardine -- "The Dean of Mean" must clear a possible nasal fracture with a doctor or no contest until November 21. His minimum suspension and no contest will last until July 24 and there's no contact until July 9.
Goran Reljic -- The Croatian is suspended until June 24 and there is no contact allowed until June 15.
Wilson Gouveia -- The American Top Team-trained fighter sustained nasal and maxillary sinus fractures that need to be cleared by an Ear Nose and Throat ENT specialist, as well as broken ribs that need to be cleared by a doctor, or no contest until November 21. His minimum suspension will last until July 24 and there is no contact allowed until July 9.
Tito Ortiz -- "The Huntington Beach Bad Boy" must have his left hand and wrist x-rayed and cleared by an orthopedic physician or no contest until November 21. His minimum suspension will last until July 9 and there is no contact allowed June 24 because of a right eyelid laceration.
Antonio Mendes -- The Brazilian is suspended until June 24.
Kazuhiro Nakamura -- The Japanese Judoka must clear a nasal fracture with a doctor there is no contest until November 21. There is a minimum no contest until July 9 and no contact until June 24.
Terry Etim -- The British lightweight is suspend until June 24 and there is no contact allowed until June 15 because of a right cheek laceration.
Jason Tan -- Tan must clear a nasal fracture with a doctor or no contest until November 21. There's a minimum no contest until July 9 and no contact until June 24.
Christian Wellisch -- "The Hungarian Nightmare is suspended until June 8 and there's no contact allowed until June 1.
Just a quick reminder: Fighters often return to action much quicker once doctors give them the green light. The lengthy suspensions are just a precaution in most cases.

Two questions:
Is it 2 months minimum if you get a (T)KO loss? And how did Wellisch get only 2 weeks after he lost by KO?

Gouveia got busted up . . . Not gonna be on main cards ever again, blew that op. Im surprized that with how black/purple his eye was and how HUGE that knee was that Sherk didnt join the broken nose club.

Dude don’t say that. Gouveia is the man. He still got fight of the night and all his fights are badass. He better still be on the main card. A rematch with Jardine possibly.

Wilson will remain a mid to upper tier LHW. Its his first UFC loss in a while. If he wins his next fight, all is good.

Wasn’t the knee that sherk got more on the forehead? that would explain the nose not breaking…
by tm2k on May 30, 2008 3:58 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Thats true, mas forehead. That would have been crazy to hit em perfect on the nose, that would have sent blood into the front row gauranteed!! Watch out Rogan!

Reljic hurt Gouveia good it seems. Broken ribs from those kicks must have hurt, props to Gouveia for fighting like he did.
What surprised me was that Sherk has NO injury on his right hand, as Goldberg and Rogan have been mumbling and stating as reasons why he didn’t punched with that arm.

Yup, Gouveia is a solider. That is why he is one of my favorites. His lose was the biggest dissapointment of the night for me. He still was in the fight of the night so he better not go to undercard obscurity.

I believe I made a reply to your original comment, which is now gone too. I will never understand the system by which some comments are shown immediately and some need to be moderated, even if they had no curse words in ’em.

I agree, I get moderated all the time, but am one of the premier posters on the site…some people should not get moderated at all: VM, John and me!! maybe chef

i think that the ufc wants rampage out of the champion seat so that they can get somebody with the title that chuck can beat! dana is pressed on chuck and nobody can deny that! it has been proven that twice that chuck cant beat rampage and i think they are going to let chuck wait and see what pans out for the lhw division. if for some freak accident forrest wins the title than i think you will see chuck vs. forrest without a doubt!

Of course, but Chuck was supposed to blast Jardine out and get that shot. He blew it. I don’t mind Chuck getting another shot at the belt even if its Rampage. I don’t think the UFC minds Rampage being champ as much as Penn being champ. I can guarentee that Dana did not want Penn to win. Penn could take his business else where and help any other org gain legitimacy but had Sherk beat Penn then Dana would have someone he trust to stay with the UFC. Rampage will stay with the org just like GSP will and Rodrigo. Penn and Silva are the only two that are questionable. Not that they don’t deserve to do what they want, just saying the UFC is probably trying to keep those guys happy and content so if Penn wants the title shot against GSP he’ll get it. However Silva still doesn’t have the option to cross promote two different sports, maybe he’ll get a little disgruntle.

I truly doubt that Dana White/UFC wanted Sherk to win over Penn. Sherk’s popularity with fans is down the toilet with his steriod press and hump/prey fight style. BJ Penn is a more marketable comodity for the UFC.
Penn doesn’t get the mega-fights because UFC is scared that Penn would leave. BJ gets the big fights because (1) he wins his fights (2) he fights in multiple weight classes (3) fans like BJ Penn and pay big bucks to watch him.
Penn already fought GSP and lost a match that many (including myself) thought that BJ Penn won. BJ’s beaten Pulver, Stevenson, and Sherk. If he beats the winner of Florian/Huerta, then he’s essentially cleaned out the division. If GSP beats Fitch, then GSP vs. Penn II – Champion vs. Champion would sell PPV’s like crack!

I hope Rampage disposes of Griffin quick, so we can see Rampage-Wandy III. I have the feeling that Wandy might have Page’s number and will send him to the hospital like he did the last time.
This time Page won’t hang in the ropes, but maybe Wandy will punch him thru the cage. (before anyone complains, I love Rampage, its just that Wanderlei makes for more exciting fights while Rampage makes for exciting interviews – I prefer fights)

So wait, I actually felt bad for Shrek and his “broken right arm” for no reason whatsoever? Darn!
And yeah, needs not be said, but Goran hits incredibly hard, and it was definitely visible during the fight. No disrespect to Gouveia, but he got mauled in that fight, at least when he was a little trigger shy.

Apparently BJ was given a 48hr suspension due to an indentation in his knee that looked exactly like Sean Sherk’s face.Teams worked around the clock and finally rubbed it out!

how did tito break his hand? when did he ever punch anything besides perhaps the air during his fight? :o
by Stu on May 30, 2008 11:47 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
ohhh! perhaps it was when he slammed his hands against his thighs in annoyance that he couldn’t do anything to machida?
by Stu on May 30, 2008 11:48 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Probably from blocking one of Machida’s kicks that didn’t really happen because he was too busy running away….lol
by Toms Bombs on May 30, 2008 12:11 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Maybe he did i in the post fight press conference when Dana was tring to ditch his over the hill ass in the back with security LoL, “The conference is over here tito, up these stairs and out that door, yea, go across the parkng lot and over the freeway til you hit an AM/PM, make a left and you’re there”

man machida sucks balls i read somewhere from a different websites editor stating that we are taking machida for granted??? are you serious we (mma fans) buy these p.p.v. shirts watch shows to watch are favorite fighters whoop ass not run away or good foot work as machida’s nuthuggers put it we wanna see people finish there fights or submit someone not just keep shitting out decisions this guy is bad for the business. please don’t give this guy a title shot make him earn it by beating people not just scoring points by his stupid ass karate skills.
by Hitman Bert on May 30, 2008 1:12 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Machida is awesome….U dont like real mma, hey Kimbo will be on TV tomorrow, maybe he would be more suited for your taste…..Your favorite fight was probably Kimbo vs. Tank lol
Get with it, Machida is a nightmare of a match up for most of the Lightheavyweight division, just ask Chuck Liddell’s camp!
I found the techcniaclity of Machida’s performance against TITO really AMAZING… This is the problem with the majority of American fans….GOd I love those Japanease fans, they actually know stuff!
Machida is not much different then Liddell, only difference is Liddell KO’s more people then Machida…their elusive styles are very simular….Get a CLUE!!

Yeah Machida definately whooped Tito’s ass all night long. I loved that fight, almost as much as I loved watching Wandy kill Jardine, and they were two totally different fights. I love how technical he is, picking Tito apart and never being touched. He doesn’t run, he just doesn’t take damage, even damage from a block. Blocking can hurt, ask Ken Shamrock. Machida doesn’t get hurt, he fights smart, and pounces when he sees the right opening. Man, I thought he was going to finish Tito at the end of the first round, too close.
by Toms Bombs on May 30, 2008 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Machida was just fine afterwards
and if physically capable of fighting
at any event coming up soon.
Tito most likely won’t be fighting again this year.
