alright guys, here’s my final thoughts on the weekends fights. For those telling me I’m crazy and stupid saying that Machida is boring, please name a true champion that is "elusive?" Chuck, BJ, GSP, Randy, etc. Nope!! He may be elusive, and I get his strategy, but in my opinion, it’s boring!!
I think BJ will defeat GSP, and it will be around New Years. Getting the winner of Florian and Huerta makes no sense. Who have they beat? While I don’t like Sherk, look at who his 3 losses are to. Florian/Huerta is a step down, and don’t interest me at all except just to see BJ fight!
A legend is back, and I for one want to see Vandy/Chuck 2!!!
Tito WILL BE BACK IN the UFC!!
Lastly, I got a drinking game for you guys, take a shot every time Tito or Jenna tell you how intelligent they are. Their patting each others backs and actually thinking they are Rhode scholars is laughable…YOU’RE A FIGHTER/THUG AND A COCK DISPENSARY!!

by kevin on May 27, 2008 5:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think they are both pretty smart actually…

How many people who go into the porno business end up fabulously wealthy? Only having sex with people they want to have sex with (that’s right, she only does scenes with people she wants to do them with, and it has been that way for years)? Owning successful companies?

And Tito… He has set himself up for success outside the cage better than the vast majority of fighters. Perhaps he realizes that he will not be able to fight forever. That sounds pretty smart to me.

And the notion that he must not be smart because he is a fighter? Joe Lauzon? Kenny Florian? Do you think they are idiots? Shane Carwin is an engineer… I bet most of the successful fighters are intelligent. How many times have you heard the chess match analogy? It takes smarts to do well in chess.

I don’t know you, but if you are of average intelligence, I would wager that both Tito and Jenna would out do you on IQ tests.

by tm2k on May 27, 2008 8:15 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Kevin I like your predictions but with a few twists..

Even though I kinda’ like Machida and find his strategy interesting, it’s not exciting and would like a fighter to put him at constant risk of being KO’d, might take someone like Rampage.

BJ is just 15 lbs to small to beat a naturally bigger GSP, but I think of all the fighters that can fight at 170’s for the title, BJ has the best chance.

I wouldn’t hold it against BJ or UFC if he fights 1 more with the winner of Florian/Huerta… but a move to 170lbs for a fight against Hughes or GSP is something I want to see now.

I don’t think Tito will be in the UFC, to many fighters that are moving up that can beat him, he’ll look for greener pastures and easier fights, he’ll never be a champion again in the UFC.

I’m with u 100% on this one! Tito needs to shut up about how good a businessman he is and just needs to do ‘GOOD BUSINESS’… I like Tito and even though Tito makes some good points about the UFC pay scale, no fighters would follow him & Jenna. Jenna obviously wears the pants in that relationship. She needs to ‘shut up’ and stay out of the UFC limelight.

by THORAZINE on May 27, 2008 9:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

you see tm2k, my IQ level is actually quite high. gifted levels, but you wouldn’t know because I don’t find it necessary to tell everyone every time I open my mouth. Every time Jenna opens her mouth (when it’s not inviting a cock), it’s to tell us how smart they are. I agree they are both very smart and business savvy, but let your accomplishments speak for themselves!
As far as other fighters, I would say that mma athletes are probably the smartest out of all the sports! So I do agree with you, not that it has anything to do with their “chess match” of a fight, but due to the fact that most are college educated! So I guess the point you missed was that I don’t think they’re not smart, it’s that I don’t need to hear it 10 times per interview!

by kevin on May 27, 2008 10:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

kevin, I’ve written on this before but nobody responded. Why does everyone think that GSP/BJ is going to happen? And should it? I’m not sure if the UFC has done that type of thing before. It would be a great fight to watch, but what would it do to the belts? TUF holds a belt up for 9-10 months every year, imagine if one person held two belts. It would be a ridiculously long wait between title defenses. And if they fought, the belts would HAVE to be on the line. Are Florian/Huerta a step down for BJ? Sure. But everyone is a step down to a champion. I’m at work so I can’t go into detail, but what do you think?

by chefdaddy on May 28, 2008 9:43 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Is it just me, or does every title except LHW feel like it’s not at risk? Unless fighters move around in weight class, the LW, WW, MW, and HW titles are pretty secure. If the UFC really wanted to spice things up, they would have BJ move to WW, and have Anderson Silva move to LHW. Suddenly, the LW title picture is wide open, everyone in the MW division would be motivated again, Anderson Silva might actually lose, and I wouldn’t mind seeing GSP/BJ fight 10 times (lol).

by Pat on May 28, 2008 10:20 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

well chef, I’d imagine if BJ held 2 belts he’d alternate defenses every 3 months, give one up, or IMO move up and win the mw title too!!

by kevin on May 28, 2008 11:18 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

its an intriguing match-up no matter how you feel about either fighter, it will answer some questions. is hughes still a top fighter? is alves for real? a legitimate contender? thank god for this fight and davis/swick. i guess i am gonna buy it.

by b.w. on May 27, 2008 5:01 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think Alves takes another step towards the top with a TKO win over Hughes. Early in the fight, I expect Thiago to peeper Hughes with Nasty leg kicks toslow matt’s takedown attemps down. I really see Alves winning this fight. I would not be surprised to see Alves KO Hughes will a perfectly timed Knee while Matt Shoots for the takedown. I like this fight a lot. I guess its cause I am a big Alves fan and a huge Hughes Hater! Atleast I admit it!

true that. i like the way you think.

by b.w. on May 27, 2008 5:39 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Good to admit this stuff, but your love and hate is blinding you. Hughes is a lot bigger and has amazing take downs. Alves just isn’t a GSP or Penn, he has my respect as a fighter but this is just too big a jump for him.

U must be from the Matt Hughes school of thought:

Bigger, stronger wrestler = a win in mma!

Not anymore buddy. People like you were the one bashing me for trying to tell you all that THiago was going to KO Karo, you a aughed and talked Sh*t….But then what happened?

Keep doubting me! lol

When will you learn to listen to the MMA-John-stardamus! lol

by John on May 28, 2008 8:44 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Your calling me out on something I didn’t do lol. I never commented on any Karo fight. I am right here however, your biased still holds you from seeing the truth behind this fight. Hughes has a tough chin there is no doubting that and a great single leg takedown. Eventually this fight will go to the ground regardless and Alves will regret it. I see the fight going like this both fighters are slow coming off in the first, Hughes tries to stand with Alves and by the end of the first has taken Alves to the ground. Second round Alves will come out firing having gotten a feeling for Hughes style, but it’ll be sloppy and Hughes will get a takedown, and sink a choke more than likely. If it goes to the third I see it more likely that Alves might get a TKO victory but then again it could still go to the ground depending on the pace of the fight. So here is my math Bigger Stonger Wrestler + Experience + Strong Chin > Smaller Striker + first top ten fight. I don’t say it really equals a win but it does mean more of a chance for a win, I haven’t completely counted out the striker here

by Bic on May 28, 2008 12:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’m with you, I’m a huge Hughes hater, and damn proud of it! lol I’ll definately be pulling for Alves on this one.

Alves in the first? I have no problem with you picking alves, but he almost never ends fights in the first… Could it happen, yes, anything can happen, but is it likely? I think not. Thiago hasn’t ended a fight in the first since april 2006… and he has described himself as a slow starter.

by tm2k on May 27, 2008 8:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This fight will most likely go at least 2 rounds..

If I was to make my prediction now, I would say Hughesus via TKO 3rd round.

by Stagger-Lee on May 31, 2008 4:04 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I will not be ordering this card.. I can’t believe with all the set-backs that the UFC has had, they are still showing this one on PPV. I am only curious to see who the winner of the Vera vs. Werdum will be..

by pUniSHment on May 27, 2008 5:13 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

this should be a close fight, although i think hughes will pull off a submission. there’s no way hughes will stand with alves, and if he does, he’ll end up like sherk.

i’d like to see diego fight koscheck again for a title shot.

by stryker on May 27, 2008 5:15 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Not a bad idea….the winner would have to get in line behind Fitch & BJ, but still a good idea.

by TonyDrip on May 27, 2008 6:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Penn I don’t think is going to move up quite yet, he still has to defend his title against Florian or Huerta. Fitch already has his title shot so thats good to go but even so Koscheck Diego would be a good fight to decide who faces the winner of Hughes Alves.

by Bic on May 27, 2008 6:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I hope you’re right, but his post fight interview sounded a lot like an announcement to me.

by TonyDrip on May 27, 2008 6:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t like Hughes, one of the few fighters I truly don’t like…but I want to see him win until he fights Serra & Penn, the 170lb division is more interesting with him at the top because there is a couple of scores to settle. Hughes losing to Alves will probably dim that intrigue.

Alves is beginning to peak in his career, I can see him beating Hughes and causing some waves in the 170lb division.

by THORAZINE on May 27, 2008 5:51 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I like every single fight on this card. I just can’t understand not wanting to see Alves, Davis, Vera. And the Marquardt/Leites fight is now on the main card. Oh shi#t Bisbing and Day. You all are crazy if you think this card sucks… And Alves will expose Matt as the over the hill fighter he is. Watch…

by bnf on May 27, 2008 5:56 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Over the hill hardly describes Hughes, maybe Tito but not Hughes. Sorry buddy but Hughes will prove you wrong. :)

Bic, I see you’re staying true to your boy Hughes.

by tripleainto on May 27, 2008 7:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No doubt, he may be on his way out of the UFC in a couple of fights but he still puts on great fights for the fans and he doesn’t back down. The guy could be fighting once a year but he tries to get as many in as possible it wouldn’t suprise me if he fought Serra before the end of the year. Hughes hasn’t lost to anyone yet that doesn’t deserve to beat him, Alves I don’t think will be the guy to beat him. I’m a Hughes fan, the dude made MMA huge along with Chuck, Randy, and Franklin for me. These guys are not slouches but yes they are getting older, but losing a fight or two does not make them open to every new comer to beat.

by Bic on May 28, 2008 12:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Why do some guys insist that Hughes is over the hill. I don’t like him, but the facts are the facts. GSP is +1 fight on him. That’s it, he’s even with BJ 1-1 and the rest he beat. Until someone other than GSP destroys him , I think the jury is still out,on him being over the hill, because the way GSP has been fighting lately,he will make the whole WW division look over the hill. Alves will be a good test and I think we will see that Matt isn’t quite done yet. Hughes has trouble with good strikers, with good TDD (GSP and BJ),but if they don’t have very good TDD,they will get MAULED. Is Alves a fast enough starter, with good enough TDD, to KO Hughes before he ends up underneath him? I don’t think so.

by Gord on Jun 3, 2008 12:00 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hughes via kimura,rd1
Hughes is better then anybody at Welterweight not named Georges St.Pierre.

by Jack on May 27, 2008 5:59 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I disagree, but that’s just my opinion. I think there are several WWs that have either passed him by or are on the same level. He’s lost a little and the others have gained a little.

by TonyDrip on May 27, 2008 6:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I disagree with you Tony, the only two WW’s in the division (excluding GSP and Penn) who are on Hughes level are Alves and Koscheck at best. Alves is a stand up guy with less skill than Penn and GSP while Koscheck is a ground guy on the same level of wrestling as Hughes. These IMO are the only two guys who stand a chance at beating this legend. Although I don’t think Alves can do it maybe Koscheck can but I’d rather he didn’t. If you don’t mind tho, name off some of WW’s that have passed Hughes or stand a good chance of beating him, maybe I missed someone.

by Bic on May 27, 2008 6:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

What about Jon Fitch?

by Pat on May 28, 2008 10:22 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No disrespect to Fitch but I don’t think his style matches well against Hughes otherwise I would put him there as well. Fitch without a doubt would deserve a shot at Hughes if he wanted it. And he does stand a chance to win but not a good one IMO

by Bic on May 28, 2008 12:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree. It seems to me that as soon as a top fighter loses a couple fights people jump onto the “over the hill” band wagon. Everybodys counting chuck liddel and wand out and now hughes. There is a reason Matt Hughes will go down in history as one of the most dominant welterweights of all time.

by boz on May 27, 2008 6:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

“Over the hill” is not a band wagon it is a fact. Hughes has said himself that he only wants to fight a few more times. Which means his career is winding down or he is “over the hill.” The sport has passed him by, he trains with the same people doing the same things and that is why he will lose this fight to Alves.

by bnf on May 27, 2008 6:34 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Just to clarify, I’m not saying he won’t go down as one of the most dominant WWs of all time. I just think some fighters have passed him by:

Fitch
Jake Shields
Karo?
Thiago?
Kos?

In the past, he was head and should above the rest. Now he’s either a little behind or close to a level playing field. I’m def not trying to take anything away from his legacy.

by TonyDrip on May 27, 2008 6:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Fitch I don’t think belongs up there, his style wouldn’t work against Hughes, but the other ones are all legit although like I’ve said before out of that group Kos has the best chance.

by Bic on May 27, 2008 6:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Fitch I don’t think belongs up there, his style wouldn’t work against Hughes, but the other ones are all legit although like I’ve said before out of that group Kos has the best chance. I understand what your saying about over the hill however I don’t think that there are any WW’s besides GSP and Penn that could beat Hughes. This is why I wouldn’t consider him over the hill and his striking really might have improved alot along with his ground game, he just hasn’t had a chance to show it fighting against a phenom like GSP.

by Bic on May 27, 2008 6:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

For the record, I’m not a Hughes fan, but to answer your list:

Fitch NO
Jake Shields NO
Karo? Cmon buddy, you got to be kidding!
Thiago? We’ll find out…but doubt it
Kos? LOL..You’re a ridiculous man.

Diego (the new sanchez) I think would have the best shot.
GSP vs. BJ
How bout BJ/ Hughes 3??

by kevin on May 27, 2008 7:14 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’d love to see BJ/Hughes 3. Not because I don’t know who would win, but just b/c I want to see BJ break the tie. I’d love for BJ to retire Matt. Not that I’m a Hughes hater, I just think it would be another notch on BJ’s belt (pun intended).

by Pat on May 28, 2008 10:42 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

BJ 3 probably won’t happen because most people know that BJ will win that fight, I don’t think Dana wants to end Hughes’ career like that. Although if BJ does move up to WW and beats GSP that is totally a possibility. Other than that I don’t see it happening

by Bic on May 28, 2008 12:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Kevin, we have to agree to disagree man.

Fitch would beat on Hughes – Fitch is a bigger more well rounded Matt Hughes

Jake Shields would put Hughes through the ringer. He’s better on his feet and on the ground. Hughes would take him down….then what?

Kos – That’s up for debate – Kos is a better wrestler and has become more well rounded IMO.

Diego – you say he has the best shot, but Fitch manhandled him for 3 rounds, so your logic doesn’t make a lot of sense.

Thiago – like you said, we’ll see – again, you’re giving him a chance, but saying No to Fitch? You realize Fitch destroyed Thiago right??

Karo – I’m def not a fan of Karo, but I would give him a 50/50 shot agains Hughes.

by TonyDrip on May 28, 2008 12:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

MMA math never makes sense tony!! The “new” Diego could be and should be a different guy. We will see after his next tune up fight next month. I’d like to see Diego/Karo 2, and IMO he demolishes Karo! IMO, Fitch is overrated, and NOBODY in the ww division right now is a threat to GSP!!
BJ will win the rematch though…and it won’t be a decision!!

by kevin on May 28, 2008 1:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No, i think Huges has this one by experiance and toughness! Hughes will Gnp Alves out for all 3 rounds winning by decision. Boring ass fight here folks…

by ntvman on May 27, 2008 6:02 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

thats exactly what im thinking.. think chris lyttle vs matt hughes… this will be the same. The only way alves can win is to knock him out before matt shoots in on him. maybe with a knee when he shoots.. but i doubt it

by mike22 on May 27, 2008 6:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Alves will probably get submitted if anything on the ground, I think Lyttle is just experienced and kept his cool on the ground. Alves is likely to give up his back or something when it ends up on the ground. It’d be hard to knock Hughes out as well, when someone like Penn and GSP didn’t do it but a TKO is definetly a possibility.

by Bic on May 27, 2008 7:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

When was the last time Hughes went to decision? When was his last boring fight? Dude hate all you want but try to call it a little bit more how it is, Lyttle wasn’t shit!

by Smokes on May 28, 2008 4:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I have to agree with Jack here. Outside of GSP, who is better than Hughes? If Alves can find a way to bear Hughes, then Hughes will start falling down the rankings in that division, but he’s a former champ for a reason. He’s good. Maybe he’s on the downside of his career, but even on the downside, he’s probably better than most in the division. Matt knows what he’s doing. He’s got a game plan. He’s out to prove he isn’t washed up. I’m taking Matt by submission.

And, there are a couple good fights on the card, but absolutely nothing that jumps out at you. Not a good PPV card. This would be a money event to air live on Spike.

THEN i watched the BJ/Lyoto slop fest for probably the 15th time, id give BJ the first round, the 3rd goes to Lyotto (2 take downs) and the 2nd . . ???Pretty close in the 2nd for both who did a lot of nothing. BJs out of shapeness and lack of experience with less than 10 fights under his belt cost him the fight. BJ would hut Lyoto down now, no elusive striking, no out o shape shoulder leaning, just a hunt, a Machida hunt = )

I think Hughes takes this easily.

I think the Hughes-hating bandwagaon is blinding people to how good Hughes still is.

He just looks bad versus GSP because GSP is the best P4P in the world, and he makes people look like amatuers.

He made Matt Serra look like some random guy off the street.

Kevin you are stupid and crazy. Machida is not boring. You dont get it. Chuck is actually, if you look at his fights, kind of like Machida but actually way less active. Machida was very involved with hitting Tito over and over. Obviously you dont watch the fights or have trouble understanding them. Chuck Liddell never knocked out Tito, he tko’d him in the first one round 2, and the second time it was pretty much even, watch the fight, until Chuck did his barrage and got a tko round 3. Machida, had the first round gone seconds later would have beat him round 1. He was that close to getting a round 1 tko or ko. Tito has never been knocked out. He is not the best fighter. He is a A level fighter though, and naturally has a kind of head that can take many shots. Machida was feinting then coming in and hitting him over and over. I am sick of the Machida haters. It is more a reflection on their intelligence than him. The man is a exciting and brilliant fighter thirty times over.

I wouldn’t go as far to call Kevin stupid, however it is clear he’d rather be entertained then watch a skillful fight. Chuck Vs Keith J. was a horrible and boring fight, it sucked. I think everyone knew Chuck was under but Chuck. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, if you only want to be entertained, keep watching WWE… and let fighters with skill continue in MMA.

Machida again huh?

Well, Machida sets up his shots but he’ll rush you when you’re hurt. Also he gets busy when you exchange with him either standing or on the ground. Machida is quite active, actually, but in spurts.

Hopefully the performance will be better than the one he put up against Lytle, if not Alves is going to knock him out. That’s probably what’s going to happen.

Oh how great it would be to see Alves whoop all over Hughes’ bible thumping ass!

Man.. Hughesus’s fight talk sounds all too familiar..is he trying to convince himself? reminds me of his kissing Dana’s ass talk. He’s a teacher’s pet if I ever saw one. You know he’s scared of that K.O. I’d love to see him get it now and later by Serra. I think if that happened I’d have to make a covenant with GOD (not the one Hughesus prays to). I dont think this card is fairly weak, but I’l be buying it to see Bisping and my Homeboy Paul Taylor (Watch this space).
