Tito Ortiz UFC 84 triangle on Lyoto Machida oh so close ...

... part of me was hoping for the stoppage -- it would have been the perfect storybook ending:

tito ortiz

Great picture. I wish they had a split screen shot with Dana’s expression when Tito locked in that triangle.

by Iss-man on May 26, 2008 10:58 AM EDT reply actions

if it were actually locked, tito would have had his hand raised. wasn’t locked and machida did a killer job keeping his carotid open.

by MMAsubb on May 26, 2008 11:01 AM EDT up reply actions

exactly. agood try but not great. if great he would have sunk in in and stopped him.

by b.w. on May 26, 2008 3:57 PM EDT up reply actions

I rewatched this earlier today. I think Tito said his mistake was transitioning into the armbar from the triangle, and it was tight before that. Machida’s never been in trouble like that. I was pleased with Tito’s performance in this fight. He went after Machida the whole time.

by jess on May 26, 2008 11:08 AM EDT reply actions

The transition was definitely Tito’s downfall. He probably should have attempted to keep rolling with it—just like Mai did when he choked out Herman. Whether you love or hate Tito you can’t tell me everyone’s heart didn’t skip a beat when he tried to sink that choke in. Good stuff.

Haha, I’m a huge tito fan and my heart didn’t skip a beat – it stopped.

I was like “oh Tito’s going for a triangle, he’ll never ge- YEEEEEEEEEES YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES COOOOOOOOOOOOME OOOOOOOOOON YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEES YEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEAH WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO…. aaaaaaaaaw”.

it s a good thing tito runs every day if not i dont think he would be able to catch up with machida the way he was running i dont see how machida could get satisfaction out of running the hole time

by josh duff on May 26, 2008 11:17 AM EDT reply actions

im tired of people sayin Lyoto was “running”, go watch Kalib Starnes fight and then u’ll see a fighter runnin like a bitch. what lyoto does, IMO, is very smart for MMA. Y the hell would he just stand in front of Tito? If he woulda done that it woulda been a GNP finish for Tito so for Lyoto to stick and move was his best chance. VERY SMART FIGHTER… but i also jumped outta my seat when Tito attempted that triangle, Dana probably shit his pants haha

by SayItAintSo on May 26, 2008 3:01 PM EDT up reply actions

The word used by the commentors was “elusive”. I guess that’s the new buzz were for a person who runs the whole fight. Machida is over hyped. He DOES not deserve a title shot.

Wouldn’t it have made more sense to accentuate the ‘not’ than the ‘does’? I’m just saying . . .

It was close it had me out of my seat but i was surprized at how well lyoto defended it he got right out of it

by Canadian crippler on May 26, 2008 11:18 AM EDT reply actions

the fight actually pissed me off! i’ve got nothing against lyoto, but he was running the entire time. tito was chasing his ass around the damn cage. did u guys see the ref’s little “slip”. he didn’t trip, his ass fell asleep how boring the fight was going!! lol! the most exciting part was when tito caught lyoto in that triangle. damn i wish he got the tapout…

put lyoto in against jardine, after that own-age he got from wandy, jardine needs a good fight. and some of y’all were counting wandy out. ye of little faith!

You are stupid and all of you who think lyoto was boring in that fight, TITO WAS THE ONE WHO DIDN’T THROW A FREAKIN COMBINATION IN THAT FIGHT, what do you expect? Tito just ran at him, what the f@ck do you expect someone to do? a) Let him hit you and get into an even more boring clinch situation B) Move to the side. You are all stupid nuthuggers, all of you are who think lyoto was boring in that fight, HE OWNED TITO IN THAT FIGHT, NO WAY AROUND THAT! TITO DID NOT GET THE TAKEDOWN ONCE, NOT ONCE. if you watch the fight again, you can clearly see lyoto being the agresser mor than tito.

by NewGuyTheGunMan on May 26, 2008 12:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Tito is a legend and it shouldn’t be up to him to run around trying to be the aggressor. He’s already done everything in the UFC.

It is already said that Lyoto is the new best thing in that division, so yes he should have wanted it more. Take your hate for Tito and screw off. Think between the lines moron. Maybe Lyoto should fight Starnes next

“Tito is a legend and it shouldn’t be up to him to run around trying to be the aggressor”

I don’t know if you guys watch fighting for sallies or what but both fighters should be the aggressor. Both fighters should have more than a one dimensional fight. The problem is Tito can’t take a punch, he literally can’t stand up, get over it. I don’t want to hear him say I was close. Close doesn’t cut it, Lutter was a “half inch” from breaking Franklin’s arm but Franklin won. Tito should have been more aggressive knowing that his reputation was on the line, Machida had nothing to lose either way yet he still won. What is this article even doing around everything Tito says is garbage.

by Bic on May 27, 2008 3:34 PM EDT up reply actions

u call us tito nuthuggers, but it sounds like ur a lyoto nuthugger. i don’t even like tito. but i don’t want to pay $50 to watch a p*ssy run around in circles for 15 minutes, i could just watch track and field for free on tv. how many of the fights on that card went to decision? the answer is 2! one of them was on the undercard. lyoto’s boring ass decision was the ONLY televised decision of the night! i pay to see fights and fights that are FINISHED! if lyoto doesn’t like being hit, then he is in the WRONG profession. and i’m sure i’m not the only one that feels that way.

by CBfighter on May 26, 2008 2:07 PM EDT up reply actions

No way he was not running the whole fight tito would come in and lyoto would back up and then come right at him with a kick or a punch combination. yes tito was more aggresive but still its not like loyoto ran the whole fight he dropped him twice.

by Canadian crippler on May 26, 2008 2:55 PM EDT up reply actions

cb watch the fight again, tito shouldn’t have ran half across the octagon for a double of course lyoto was going to move to the side!!! i think all the hard core fans know what I am talking about.

by NewGuyTheGunMan on May 26, 2008 3:53 PM EDT up reply actions

Had all three rounds been fought like the last round, that would have been an AMAZING fight, but you HAVE to give Lyoto props because he was virtually unmarked, his hand was raised, he won more money, he’s on the VERY fast track to a title shot, he played with Tito-you could see Tito getting more and more frustrated! His attempts to shoot were all fruitless, and minus the choke/armbar sequence, he was owned….that said he does deserve the respect as one of the greatest fighters in UFC history…. What is the oft quoted mantra? “Fighting is about the mental game, all these guys are in shape (mostly…), it’s the Mental Edge and Toughness that wins fights….” === that Yogi Berra/ Tim Silvia "Half of this game is 90% mental."

by ALPOferdinner on May 26, 2008 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions

It was a good fight, Lyoto’s strategy was to hit and get out a boxing strategy executed to perfection! I was rooting for Tito and I believe had Tito grabbed hold of him with his patented take down and ground-and-pound Lyoto would have been smashed! Unfortunately for me, Tito and all the other Tito fans he just couldn’t grab hold of Machida. As much as I hated the outcome Lyoto played it smart and kept his distance and used his speed to frustrate Tito.

Next, as far as the triangle and arm bar, if Tito holds just the triangle he puts Machida to sleep and there is absolutely no arguing this point! They were both slippery and the arm bar came at a point in the fight where there was just too much sweat. Tito proved he still has a lot left in the tank and is still a force to reckoned with. I would like to see Tito train in another camp and learn some new techniques and use a different strategy. Couture is a genius, Dellagrotte is a wizard and these guys can put some new wrinkles in the game plan for “The Huntington Beach Bad Boy.”

Give props to both fighters and I hope Tito is back in the UFC!

by Ray on May 26, 2008 6:13 PM EDT up reply actions

One move is not anything for props. Not to mention any submission attempt in the third says a couple things. One of those is that both fighters are tired and hence give up more submission attempts or hits than normal. For Tito to come in on the third and go for an arm bar doesn’t mean he’s something to be recknoned with, it just means he’s running out of ideas. He should have been working on it the whole time but considering his take downs were lacking and knowing that this was a problem when he faced Chuck I didn’t see any improvement. There has been very little if any improvement by Tito and since he’ll be leaving the UFC all of his potential to be a hall of famer is gone. Maybe if he joins another org they’ll give him a half assed fame award for beating the scum of their division.

by Bic on May 27, 2008 3:49 PM EDT up reply actions

look at the bruise on Tito’s legs from those kicks. I love what someone said before about this fight. “It was great i could watch Machida throw a leg kick, go make a snack and be back in time for the next kick.”

I hope to god Machida never wins the belt. It would be the quivalent of watching Tim Sylvia’s championship run. Boring 5 rounders. I respect Machida’s style but it is really boring to watch. Now i will wait for the people who seem to think that 1 takedown and 1 knee makes for an exciting fight.

by SpiderStyle on May 26, 2008 11:20 AM EDT reply actions

Coming into the fight i had respect for both as MMA fighters. i was just hoping for a good back and forth fight, but machida did not gain my respect saturday with him “running” the entire fight! i have always given him the benefit of the doubt when people call him “elusive” and a counter guy because of his record. But a guy who simply refuses to go in there in the most important fight of his career and “fight”, that just doesnt do it for me. My respects go out to tito for calling him out in the middle of the fight and almost getting the win with a triangle. Thats what sparring is for, to analyze your fighter and prepare for it. But once you step in to the ring, you have to go in there and be agressive…

sorry lyoto, but theres a reason why we all love wanderlei!!!! and he proved it again saturday. win or lose, he goes in there and just brings it!

by blah on May 26, 2008 1:05 PM EDT up reply actions

They need to do something with the contracts, like the fights on tuf…

On tuf fighters get 5K for winning and another 5K for finishing the fight.
right now it seems the formula for UFC ppvs is $X for showing and another $X for winning. Maybe it should be $X for showing +.5X for winning + another .5X for finishing.

Fighters should be given a greater incentive to finish the fight. I hate it when someone stops trying to end the fight because they know they are up on the cards…

Oh man was it close. Too bad for Tito and give Machida credit for not giving up.

Hats off to Tito for his 11 years in the UFC, he had many of us entertained and at the edge of our seats on many occasions. I think you can also say this even if you are a Tito hater, give the guy some credit.

by Jo on May 26, 2008 11:26 AM EDT reply actions

Tito got schooled. That triangle was his one glimmer of hope, the only chance he had to win the fight. What does he do? He gives up on the triangle and goes for an arm bar! lol

You should have watched the fight. He had a triangle and an arm bar at the same time.
Tito didnt get schooled. He probably “LOL” at guys like you when he sits at home in a multi million dollar mansion, has his hot girlfriend do him like a porn star (literally) and creates how he is going to create another 5 million like he did last year.
My hat is off to Tito for what he has done for the sport. I hope he is around for another couple of years and is successful.
Thanks for a great 11 years in the UFC Tito!

Yeah, I was surprised that Machida got out. Mad props for that. He’s so singular.

I actually loved the fight, but if you’re a Tito fan it probably sucked. Machida’s skill was great. I’ve never seen a fighter actually not even hardly having to block a punch.

I wonder if BJ is going to want another crack at him?

by dave on May 26, 2008 11:32 AM EDT reply actions

I agree. I was loving the fight from start to end. Machida was so technical, and he had Tito guessing the whole fight with all of his fake-outs.

by Toms Bombs on May 26, 2008 11:42 AM EDT up reply actions

And he stuffed all of Tito’s takedowns. I could see where he would frustrate a person he is fighting against, but as for a fan’s [erspective I thought it was brilliant fighting. He was punishing Tito with the kicks (big red welts on his legs) and punches (cut on his eye). But I come on this site and people are crying that it was boring. I enjoyed it and feel a little perplexed by all the hate. He was in no way like Starnes running away. When Tito made his little gesture at the end of the second round he ate two shots to the face.

by Fightinroundtheworld on May 26, 2008 8:05 PM EDT up reply actions

I tip my hat to Tito. He did his best to make an exciting fight while Machida ran the whole time. Being elusive is one thing, Machida was being a pussy. We want exciting fights not boring games of tag. I dont want to be in the “Machida” buisiness. Bring back palm fighting Pankration so Machida can go be a lackluster star.

i meant to say igree with nokimono. he crossed the line of being intelligent counter or being a pussy.some people say his style is hit & run. but it is more like run, run, run, hit, run, run, run, and repeat for 15 mins.

by the Levi on May 26, 2008 10:01 PM EDT up reply actions

I don’t say Machida is the most exciting guy in the UFC, but I enjoy his style and I feel excited watching that kind of fighter, ‘cause he just nullifies all the offense, he barely gets hit, he doesn’t block and he doesn’t need to, and he does that without looking like his running away, the ppl who think that are not watching the fight in the right way.

Tito barely did any offense, where were the takedowns??? Uhh? one or two, that was the only thing he could do???
Machida picked him apart with his style, if Tito would have push more, I’m surely that Machida would have put a more exciting fight, like the Soko fight. The Triangle was nice and very close, but the talent and skills of Machida can’t be overlooked, he got out from a very tight submissions, plus he was gassed, and that he has to change. Adding questionable tank to a elusive (boring to some) style will not make him last there in the ufc, unfortunately.

by demonianray on May 26, 2008 11:43 AM EDT reply actions

Yes! Why would you sprawl against a take-down, which has the risk of being actually taken down, when you can simply move to the side? I also agree with your point with Soko. If Tito was more in Machida’s face, the pace of the fight itself would have picked up, and Tito would have probably ate more knees. lol

Also, now that I really look at that pic, for that second, Tito had all that weight on his face. lol Too funny, good thing he has a big head.

Am I the only one here that thinks Tito is overplayed on this site? We need a vote. The public must be heard.

by kama kaze on May 26, 2008 2:08 PM EDT up reply actions

agreed. chuck isn’t boring but is definitely overrated. But i must say that a fight between chuck and machida would be extremely boring. both counter fighters that would both be looking for an opening that wouldn’t be there. Reminicent of Severn/Shamrock 2.

by SpiderStyle on May 26, 2008 2:48 PM EDT up reply actions

Chuck goes for a kill every fight. Machida goes for a decision. Chuck counters with KO power, Machida counters with baby kicks & jabs. Chuck has gone on KO steaks longer than Machidas record, Machida will probably go on the biggest decision win record ever. And if Chuck is overrated then what do you feel about all the top guys he’s KO’d ??

by JV on May 26, 2008 3:38 PM EDT up reply actions

HAVE you seen the jeremy horn fight? the first round of the tito fights, they suck, chuck is, like machida, is only fun when his opponent is exciting.
If you put chuck in with machida, it would be the most boring fight in the planet, neither presses the action. But if you put them in with randy or soko = fireworks.
DONT GET MAD AT MACHIDA FOR TITO’S PREFORMANCE, if he would of set up the takedowns with his hands aka randy, then we would have had a real fight, but, tito is just a wrestler thats it.

by NewGuyTheGunMan on May 26, 2008 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions

So if Titos performance wasnt good then why couldnt Machida finish? You should just face the fact that Machida is a boring fighter. Talks about being a samurai and being the dragon, but has no killer instinct. You talk about first rounds instead of the KO’s Chuck delivers. Machidas 1-2-3 round are all boring. And if your going to mention Soku/Machida that lets me know your a Machida nut lover, Soku was 4-1 thats abit inexperienced dont you think?

I’ve been following Lyoto a bit in the last few years and have really enjoyed his style of fighting, with that said that was one of the most cautious fights I’ve ever seen from him. I attribute most of that to Tito’s total inability to do anything at all, it was just so easy for Lyoto to sidestep, sprawl and avoid all takedowns and any standup. Speaking of standup, Tito has no such thing, its pretty weak. So, when someone with Lyoto’s abilities of anticipation, agility and quickness comes along and he can’t take him down Tito might as well be a punching bag in there, hes just about as effective on his feet. The reason why I mentioned a punching bag, is because thats essentially what Tito was for Lyoto, however Lyoto didn’t seem that interested in getting close to him to tag him with his vast array of strikes. I was a bit disappointed to be honest, only in the last few minutes did the fight come alive and was certainly hoping that Lyoto would come out of his shell a bit more because he really could’ve beaten Tito down in my opinion.

Lyoto made Tito look like a rookie.
Tito wasted energy focusing on the build up and drama.
If he would have focused that energy on training
and studying how to win then he may not
have looked so stupid in his last UFC fight.
Lyoto put on a great performance and
the only valid complaint is on Tito’s performance.

We must have watched different fights. Machida got in more high power strikes and combinations, a takedown, dropped Tito with a knee to the liver, got in some ground and pound, bruised his leg with kicks, cut him near the eye, and successfully evades a triangle-armbar transition, yet he’s being compared to Kalib “I fear the Rock Hammer” Starnes, and nobody’s getting on Tito for not doing more to engage? What a load of nuthugging crap.

by robwhiskey on May 26, 2008 1:16 PM EDT reply actions

If Machida had really pulled a Starnes, then it would have been impossible for him to get in more offense than his opponent…yet that’s exactly what happened.

by Jase on May 26, 2008 1:23 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah, he took Tito down and knee’d his guts sends him to the ground and pound him up. and did Kalib do that? no, Tito didn’t even take him down once and lyoto outstriked him and Tito hardly did anything just that triangle last 5 sec he did and few srikes, and Lyoto outclassed his ass. seems like Tito is a shitty fighter than lyoto.

by Ro on May 26, 2008 2:57 PM EDT up reply actions

I seen Tito on numerous occassions throw his hands up and tell Lyoto to fight. Yes he caught Tito with a knee but was not ble to finish the fight(Big Surprise).

by Vette on May 26, 2008 1:25 PM EDT reply actions

whether machida ran at him or from him, tito had to break him one way or the other or he was going to lose the fight. even in retreating mode, machida still threw and landed significantly more shots than tito stalking. you can’t blame a guy fighting at that level wanting to force his opponents to fight his fight. as someone mentioned earlier, i’d much rather watch what machida did, than some dumb lay-and-pray half ass’d ground and pound.

bottom line is, to be the best you have to be able to beat your opponent in which ever form they come. there’s no arguing with that.

by fanatic on May 26, 2008 2:13 PM EDT reply actions

I saw this fight going exactly as it happened. I don’t think Machida was running, he was avoiding being hit. He won most of the exchanges and confused Tito. Why didn’t Tito take him down, oh yeah…He couldn’t. Also, if there was another 10 seconds left in the first round it wouldn’t have went to a decision. The crucifix would have ended it.

I was wondering until i read the bottom of your post. OVERHYPE= Brock lessnar, kimbo, chuck liddell ( I say that because he beat wrestlers not strikers, but he was given the label best striker on the planet, in the fights he that he did face real strikers they are back and forth battles, not 10 second ko’s) TITO is one of the most overhyped fighters there ever was. Rich franklin when he was champ, and evan tanner.
UNDERHYPE= MACHIDA, soko, thiago(both), and a couple of others.

by NewGuyTheGunMan on May 26, 2008 4:12 PM EDT up reply actions

the reason why lyoto keeps backin off because he knows Tito is a very skilled grappler with strong takedowns. so he keeps the distance to force Tito to stand up and fight and that’s Tito weakness which lyoto taken advantage for.

by Ro on May 26, 2008 2:35 PM EDT reply actions

I wouldn’t go as far as whoever didn’t enjoy the fight or Machida’s style stupid, but it does amaze me how narrow sighted people can get when trying to be non-conformists and hate on the guy that’s being hyped up, and for good reason too.

The one thing that kept kreeping in my mind while watching the fight the first time, was “why on earth isn’t Tito even trying to do something?”. He did absolutely NOTHING excluding 2-3 horrible takedown attempts and a few kicks and punches which showed once again how one dimentional he is.
Machida controlls him ALL FIGHT LONG, dictates the pace, tags him with kicks again and again, shows an outstanding sprawl, takes tito down with great skill and is denied the W by the clock, then continues to be on the verge of pounding out tito after a killer knee, and yet, people still complain about him “running all fight long”. You guys are absolutely ridiculous, no better way to put it. Alright, so you don’t enjoy his style, but to compare him to Stranes shows you know nothing about technique and skill, and looking simply for bar-room brawls. You want that, go watch Kimbo and give me a break.

Fight was awesome, with two great moments where I grabbed my head, once with amazement at the near ground and pound finish, the other with Tito’s submission attempt.

No hate for Tito as a person whatsoever, all the best to him in the future, but Machida made him look even worse than I thought he was after his last few fights.

I agree even though it is just easier to call some of you stupid. But I hate tito as a person as well as a fighter.

by NewGuyTheGunMan on May 26, 2008 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions

For anyone who follows martial arts, it is obvious that Machida is your typical Karate fighter. He has a similar style of defence to Crocop, Chuck etc. Karate fighters prefer intelligent footwork as a form of defence , this is becuase on the streets if you are faced with multiple attackers you’re more likely to avoid a sucker punch (or worse) if you stick and move.

I totally respect Machida’s style and it’s a much needed alternative in this day and age where Thai boxing is the norm. It’s a breath of fresh air.

LOL at everyone hating on Machida. He made Tito look like an amateur last night. You can not like his style, but to say he was running is just stupid. Moving to the side when Tito shoots and making him get nothing but air is pure skill. Plus, its hard to run for “15 minutes” and still have taken Tito down, made him double over in pain from a knee to the ribs, and mess up his face the way Lyoto did.

Lyoto owned him. Lyoto owned Sokky, too. Get over it.

lyoto’s so callled “elusive” style makes LnP semm a little more exciting than i had previously thought.

I want to see Machida and Liddell fight. They are both counter strikers. Chuck would have to come after him more than he has any fighter.

Machida looked like Koschek. Counter, counter, win the fight. I am not a fan of Tito’s but I don’t think that should have been the way he goes out of the UFC

by twist on May 26, 2008 4:43 PM EDT reply actions

All the UFC fans that hate on Tito can now shut up and all the Tito nuthuggers can go watch him fight nobody’s in crappy Elite XC. It’s over.

by RiverHorror on May 26, 2008 4:52 PM EDT reply actions

Machida is a p*ssy. most know his backround is Karate where you fight for points. plain a simple, ppl wanna see a fight, not some faggotazz running around jab, run, kick run repeat bullsh*t. until he stands in front of someone and exchanges in the pocket i will NEVER respect or hope for him to do well.its one thing to be a smart fighter and another to peck and run.
p.s. Machida is not elusive he’s running ppl. there’s a difference

Good fight. Classic ending, say what u want about Rogan, hate him or love him, the guy gets soooo excited when unexpected things happen in a fight! Good job Joe!

There is another fight league that has the rules dialed in. If an a fighter backs off and does not charge, they start taking pints away. I am contemplating not paying next time. $50 to watch a guy dance and run like a little girl – he was scared of Tito’s power.
The rules need to change.
We PAY to watch a fight and it’s $50 each fight and there are quite a few fights per year. NO MORE DANCING!!!!

by add full time on May 26, 2008 5:46 PM EDT reply actions

yeah no more dancing. maybe lyoto should go on dancing with the stars.oh wait a minute he’s not even a star.

How did ya’ll like that knee machida threw and dropped TIto with? I swore he nailed him on the chin or something, then the replay showed it was all stomach!! Crazy, that and the almost triangle tito pulled made this fight a nice one.

Machida is frusterating IMO, to teh fighters adn fans, its cool to see such strategy adn technique sometimes, but he is a great fighter, and deserves better competition now. I think there is nobody more deserving of a title shot them him.

If the fight would have went 5 rounds (Tito would have won) Another bit of ground fighting in the 4th and he would have been done.

Machida vs chuck would be fun, two guys that love seeing guys come at em while they are in reverse.

I wouldnt mind seeing Machida drop a few lbs and fight anderson silva… that could prove interesting.

Houston and Keith Jardine would get schooled by Machida.

Here’s an interesting point, if you ask someone what was the most important/exciting part of the fight tito vs lyota they would say the triangle at the end… That says tons about the average MMA fan. They do like submissions as much as the big strikes but when the strikes are because you dont wanna engage it kinda waters it down.

I actually like both fighters more after watching the fight. I like unusual fighters with different methods of winning fights. Tito GNP, Rampage (Big Slam), Karo (Fancy throws), Cro-cop Highkick, Machida reverse gear and almost looking like he is fighting scared, Jardine (all over the place), BJ flexibility Factor, KFLO (Cuts), Wandy and Houston (KNEES).

Here are some nice fights I would love to see…
Roan Cairona vs the guy who just beat warmachine.
Chuck vs Lyota.
Wandy vs Houston
Karo vs Fitch
Anderson silva vs GSP
BJ vs Nate Diaz (just cause I wanna see Diaz get sub’d)
Soku vs VERA (They could catch weight)
Kongo vs Brock
Hendo vs Franklin
Hughs vs Serra
Alves vs Kos

If Machida is the future of MMA, then count me out. That hit, non-engage and RUN style is not for me! It may be great for fighter longevity and winning belts, but it REALLY sucks for the viewers. I couldn’t imagine what a fight with two Machida style fighters would look like, hit non-engage and run, hit non-engage and run with a total punch count of 10.
No thanks! Give me two Titos standing in front of each other and beat each others faces in.
War Rampage kicking Machida in the leg so much he can’t be elusive.

machida vs winner of rampage/griffin @ ufc ~89
ufc ~88 thiago silva vs rashad evans for next #1 contender

Wandy and liddell need a couple of more wins till they deserve a title shot

I love to see some technical fighter in MMA like Machida or Anderson Silva not just Take them down beat them up guys like Tito or Sherk.

by Lyoto on May 27, 2008 3:29 PM EDT reply actions

Stoppage from armbar? Tito got saved by the bell after Lyoto took his ass down, secured a crucifix like position and started raining down blows. . .

Did everyone forget about that?

What happened to the superior wrestler that Tito supposedly is? He got taken down by a Karateka!

Lyoto for the smart win all the way!

Amazing picture! Amazing submission. Almost.

by Jonathan Zungre on May 28, 2008 12:12 PM EDT reply actions

Apart from being a good fighter in his day, Tito is an army loving prick that needs to piss off to WWF or whatever he dreams about being… lyoto is a different kind of fighter, a fighter who is cool and interesting to watch, hard guy to beat..and Tito wasnt really close to beating him apart from that triangle at the end of the fight. All that running shit is stupid, hes a smart fighter, good kicks, tito’s leg must have been aids..
