'The Axe Murderer' is back ... and he isnt going anywhere (yet)

wandi ufc

Props: Press-Telegram

Quoteworthy:

"I think it has to be one of those things where Silva comes to me and says 'these guys are huge, I need to go down to 185. There is one interesting fight for him at 185-pounds and there is (many) interesting fights at 205 for Silva."

UFC President Dana White responds to questions about whether or not Wanderlei Silva would compete at 185 pounds going forward. "The Axe Murderer" snapped a three-fight losing skid this weekend at UFC 84: "Ill Will," drilling Keith Jardine en route to a 36-second first round technical knockout. He holds two wins over reigning UFC Light Heavyweight Champion, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, which would make a third fight extremely marketable. Silva, however, more than likely needs one or two solid wins to earn a title shot ... unless Forrest Griffin can upend the champ on July 5. So who's next for Wanderlei?

He would be a monster at 185 but I would prefer the Rampage vs Silva III fight

by Automation on May 26, 2008 2:20 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i would also like to see that fight but i think that Wanderlei needs to get a least 2 more wins before he gets a shot at the champ Rampage. but if Forrest beats Rampage then they could fight much sooner.

If Rampage loses to Forrest, which I think he will, there will be an immediate rematch between Wandy and ‘Page. I’d rather see Wand fight him for the belt though.

lol"if Rampage loses"..

Rampage (imo) will win his fight easier then BJ beat Sherk…

Forrest has a very slim chance in defeating Jackson…Dont get me wrong. I love Forrest, but Rampage is on another level compaired to Griffin..

As for Wand??
I think he should stay at 205, and fight Rashad Evans(which is already rumored)..Then if(when) Wand beat’s the undefeated Rashad, He could possibly fight Forrest after Griffin loses to Rampage….

If(when) Wandy gets two credible win’s, we should be watching Rampage defend agianst Wandy around New Years(or early next year)..

Another possibility is Wandy fights Chuck(if both win their next fights) and have Liddell .vs. Wandy-2 in a #1 contender-match, and have the winner fight Rampage..

by Stagger-Lee on May 26, 2008 8:09 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

All it takes is for Rampage to get hit once. The guy folds every time someone rocks him, we just havent seen it happen to him in the octagon. Just go back through his fight history, and you’ll see that he lacks heart. If I were to bet on this fight, I’d put my money on Forrest.

by --utaptout-- on May 26, 2008 9:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with everything but the timing. This thing could take a year to play out.

by Dugout on May 26, 2008 9:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Jackson is a different fighter from the days of Pride.. 3yrs with Juanito Ibarra and maturity of Jackson has made him a much better fighter. Sometimes lack of proper training looks like lack of heart… in a way… it is, but lack of guts isn’t Jackson’s issue.

by THORAZINE on May 27, 2008 12:46 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

utaptout: I dont need to go back and watch Rampage’s history of fights, for I have followed Jackson through out most of his career.

I know all it takes is “one hit” to end a fight..Just not this one(unless it’s Page hitting Forrest)..

Go back and count how many time’s Forrest punched Bonner..Probably 500. no KO..
What about going decision with Hector Ramerez??wtf.

Rampage probably hit’s the hardest in the LHW division..I love Forrest Griffin, but Rampage WILL hurt him..trust me!.wait and watch.
Rampage will have an easier time beating Forrest then BJ did against Sherk, and we all saw what happened there..I know there is always the chance for an up-set(thats how this sport is)..unpredictable. But with that aside. On paper? Rampage will not lose this fight..

it should be chuck liddell but if not chuck then page/forrest winner. i wouldn’t mind seeing chuck/shogun. but liddell/wand 2 is extremely marketable right now especially when their first fight was one of the best of all time and WAND just executed jardine, and liddell got back on track with his close decision against WAND. I’m just afraid if they dont fight next one of them would lose and the fight would still be big like the last one, but not the fight of all fights like if they fought next it would be the biggest fight in UFC history since both are coming off good performances and wins

by chris on May 26, 2008 2:20 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

They are not gonna have Chuck fight Wandy back to back. Chuck will probably get to fight Jardine next, and avenge his loss. Then Chuck will either fight the winner of Rampage/Forrest(Which will be Rampage)or Shogun. I would like to see Silva fight Machida next.

My take on the past UFC. ..I thought the card turned out better then expected!..

Melendes/Silva.
Good fight, while it lasted. I had money on Silva, and he came through..Melendes almost landed that high kick at the begining and had me worried..Silva composed himself well and showed his determination to win..Silva looked like a mad man when he snapped and took the fight directly to Melendes..I love it..

Ortiz/Machida.
This fight was boring at times, but I still enjoyed watching it, as the fight still had some entertaining moments..At the end of the first, Machida showed how fast he is, and also while being a very "technical" fighter he WILL try to end a fight if the opportunity arise’s.. Lets face it Tito is a hard fighter to finish in 3 rounds, and Machida had him on the edge twice..Tito did impress me aswell, with his triangle to arm-bar attempt..
As much as I dislike Tito..’If I only watched UFC? I would probably be saying I want Tito to get re-signed, BUT I watch all MMa promotions, and am actually looking forward to see where Jacob lands, and his next fight. because he will DEFINETLY not be fighting for the UFC..

Gouveia/Reljic.
Damn. I am so pissed that Wil lost..Goron looked decent in his UFC debut, but I still didn’t see to much(aside from his kicks) that impressed me..
Wil had him dazed, and couldn’t finish him off. So that tells me Reljic is tough aswell as having "quick recovery". I mean Goveia had him, and Reljic came back Leban style, all pissed off, and caught Wil in the temple then banged him out…For people that were saying Wil can’t take a punch?..He got banged on like 10 times, while he was dazed, and still didn’t go limp..I dont think Gouveia will get cut from the UFC just yet. And as for Reljic?.. I see alot of hole’s in his game, and(imo) it’s just a matter of time before a top fighter expose’s them…

Jardine/Silva.
Do I even have to say anything??..The AXE-MURDERER is back!!

BJ/Sherk..
haha. I am so glad that fight is over. Now BJ can get to fighting Top competitiion…
Like I said before BJ .vs. Sherk = easy win for BJ…
And it was just that..Sherk had no chance..Sherk was scared to shoot, just like I thought…It was almost like BJ was playing with him…(imo) It look like BJ wanted the fight to go to later rounds to shut people up about his cardio…BJ could have finished Sherk whenever he wanted to…BJ only left himself with the stand-up option’s..imo in the 4th BJ would have taken it to Sean 100% and finished him…But BJ had him dazed and knew, if it was there? take it!…so he did…Sherk got KTFO!!

All around great card, and I am glad we got to see 9 fights on the ppv..I only bet on the 5 ppv bout’s and went 4right and 1Gouveia wrong!..won myself 600 bucks…Could have been 8, but I lost 200 on Wil..
sorry my post was mad long..probably a million spelling mistakes..but this is to long to spellcheck.lol..

Stager Lee: My bets were 12/15 correct for a nice $1,500 pay day…. Great weekend I must say.

I am on fire with the over/unders. I bet most of my fights through BetUS, but I found a bookie in my neightborhood that takes action on all UFC events. He gives the odss for all the fights as well as the overs/Unders…..I gave his pockets a beating too this weekend…lets see if he lets me bet next time around. lol

Didnt I tell everyone, that wanderlei’s furociousness and Brutality will be the difference… I called it: wandy Brutal KO in the 1st 90 seconds….

“John The MMA Prophet” strikes again.

All you clowns who spent the week fighting with me about how the big strong wrestler tito Ortiz was going to do this and that to machida….Did Tito even land a strike?>? I know Machida BLASTED him with that knee to the liver.

How can people say that Machida fight was boring? I thought it was a very entertaining fight. If you dont like that kind of technical fight, maybe you should be watching Tank Aboot fights!… At least you guys get to watch Kimbo next weekend….I prefer watching the sweet science that is a Machida fight!

by john on May 27, 2008 7:49 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

John: Congrat’s on you pay-day!..I read that in another post, and I must say, you know how to pick em’..Damn you cleaned up!

“John The MMA Prophet”..LMAO, good one..Profit you did..

Agreed on the Machida/Tito fight…I did think at times it was slow, but when it got going, there were time’s I was up out of my seat..I really hoped Machida was able to finish Jacob, but to Tito’s credit, he is not that easy to finish..

What do you think about a Machida/Thiago fight??
I say it HAS to happen..I really hope the UFC makes it happen..UFC 87 maybe? rumor is Wand/Evans is going to be added. If it does happen? along with Silva/Machida,(and the already booked fights) this card would be amazing..The UFC need’s something big, for the show after Affliction, so it is very posssible it could happen..I will keep my fingers crossed.

I’d love to see him fight Anderson. Wanderlei is a tough son of a gun and I think it would be an awesome fight. I was actually hoping for this. I’d like to see Wanderlei take a fight or two at middleweight before fighting Anderson.

by Shadyone33 on May 26, 2008 2:20 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i would like see that fight at catch weight of 195 just to see if Anderson can handle bigger oppoenents. because if he wins then he could move up to 205.if Wanderlei wins then a rematch against eithehr theICEMAN or RAMPAGE becomes much more marketable.

Dana is right, as much as I hate to say that. At 185 he doesn’t have too many interesting match-ups, but they are there. Hendo would be a great rematch to see, and of course Anderson. But other than that it’s not as intersting as anyone at 205.

Sokodjou vs silva I think it would be fun. what do you guys think

by Mark B. on May 26, 2008 2:26 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I would rather see him fight Liddell again, and I’m sure Dana does too. That’s a big money fight, especially since Wandy has no doubt gained a boat load of fans over his last couple fights. And, if Wandy wins, it not only builds up the hype for a third match with Rampage, but an even bigger money-maker in liddell silva 3.

by Toms Bombs on May 26, 2008 2:32 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree, but if Wandy loses to Chuck again, then he wont get a 3rd crack at Rampage. I just cant believe in the whole Rampage hype until he avenges his 3 losses to Chute Boxe. Sometimes I wish the UFC would be more like Pride used to be, and just pit fighters into matches that the fans want, without the title implications. It would be a good way to fill these long boring gaps when they have the title holders and contenders coach against eachother on TV. Why cant we just see Chuck vs Anderson just because it would be an amazing fight? Or GSP vs. Hendo?

by --utaptout-- on May 26, 2008 3:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree for sure. I would much rather them match up fights according to what the fans would rather see.

by Toms Bombs on May 26, 2008 4:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think they should have a light heavy weight night.. Machida v Jardine.. Griffin v Evans.. when Liddell comes back fight Shogun.. Thiago Silva v Goran Reljic… Wanderlai v Rampage and get Tito Ortiz to sit ringside and watch how real fighters go at it.. Wanderlai should have a crack at Rampage or if they could get Randy Couture to come back and fight, good old Randy is sensational to watch. After he beat Tim Sylvia Dana should have got him to drop his weight and fight Rampage so he could kick the shit out of him. No offence to Rampage, great fighter lots of respect.

by nathan on May 26, 2008 5:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Pride would do that but then they have their champs fighting in non title match ups all the time and the belts would rarely get defended, how do you think Wanderlei had the title for like 5 years? he only had the title on the line like 5 times, but competed in many non title fights.

by BLOodyMEss on May 26, 2008 5:38 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

jardine is done…two brutal KO’s will keep him off main cards for a long time, especially because he’s not very marketable

by --utaptout-- on May 26, 2008 9:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

“how do you think Wanderlei had the title for like 5 years?”

Because he knocked everyone out in his weightclass that was worth fighting. The difference is because he is such a warrior he fought at LH and even HW when he is ideally a MW fighter because he is willing to fight anyone.

How many people can you say that about in the UFC???

I agree regulated fights (i.e strict weight classes) are better but it was still awesome to see Wandy vs Crocop and Mark Hunt!! Plus he was not outclassed in those fights like most people would be.

I sure miss Pride they gave the fans what they want where the UFC tries and occasionally gets it right. 84 being the best card in ages.

Wandy is the fu*%in man and win or lose I will always look forward to his fights!!

by Ca$z on May 27, 2008 6:16 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t understand why ppl want him to drop, I said this before White, there is just better match ups at LHW. The guy lost three consecutive times, but of those three losses only one is in the UFC and it was his debut fight. One fight against a top HW in Mirko (yes, top HW), and one when he was sick to Hendo. There is no reason for him to drop, he’s getting confident inside the octagon and will pose threats to anyone inside the cage.

I would love to see wandy vs. chuck II, wandy is hungry and he’ll get his revenge on chucky. If not chucky than maybe machida, I think wandy has the best style to put an end to machida’s run (even though I ENJOY watching machida).

by linx on May 26, 2008 2:30 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

“put an end to machida’s run”

no pun intended?

by boz on May 26, 2008 2:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

not at all, machida is a great fighter and engages in every fight he has, it’s not his fault many viewers are not educated in the game of MMA enough to appreciate his style. he does his job, and wins his fights, tito had nothing on him at all. he even missed a shoot by a long margin. machida was the better man that night and I don’t think avoiding a punch by going to the sides and countering with a kick is “running”, “running” is what kalib did by going backwards in his fight all the time.

by linx on May 26, 2008 2:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Exactly, If Machida was running, then you could make the argument that BJ was running against Sherk, and that is simply not the case. Why sit there and get hit if you can win the fight decisively. I am going to go out on a limb and say that Lyoto is the future at 205, and he earned himself a match against a BIG name next fight with his dominant win over Ortiz, especially becasue you know Dana was absolutely LOVING that fight. I like Tito but he was just completely outclassed that night. P.S. I loved those double kicks he was throwing. Its nice to see a good karate stylist using the skills effectively in the Octagon.

by --utaptout-- on May 26, 2008 3:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I couldn’t agree more dude, i just posted almost the exact same thing on another thread. im sick of people sayin Machida was “runnin”, he is one of THE smartest fighters out there. besides The Natural

by SayItAintSo on May 26, 2008 3:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

All of you guy are just nut lovers, Machida did just enough to not be considered a (starnes) Machida is so boring that the ref fell asleep and fell down. Everybody was saying, Tito is past his prime, so then why couldnt Machida finish him? and almost got finished himself?

by JV on May 26, 2008 4:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

either that JV or you’re just a hater. Based on most of the posts I read from you, my guess would be the latter.

by linx on May 26, 2008 4:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Linx: I just dont jump on the hype wagons, thats not being a hater. Machida is boring admit it, everybody said Tito is past his prime then why didnt Machida finish? Machida is obviously very skilled but has no killer instinct.

by JV on May 26, 2008 5:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

JV, I really dig his fights, and I really can’t comprehend how you can compare him to kalib. I’m not buying the hype in machida, he’s definitely beatable, but his game sure is beautiful to watch. As I said earlier the person to beat him has to be an aggressive striker that does not stop coming forth. That’s the only way someone will beat him. Keep the pressure to him and is not afraid of getting hit and has to have a thick skull, that’s wandy. Tito couldn’t land a single punch standing up, and he would throw one here, one there and keep his distance. That’s why the fight might have been seen as boring to some, but it’s not really machida’s fault, he’s a counter striker, someone needs to come forth for him to engage, and tito wasn’t it.

by linx on May 26, 2008 5:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

JV, it would help if you trained a bit and could appreciate the intricacies of fighting. Machida fought a picture perfect fight against Tito, who normally is a beast with his takedowns. Just because you cant see that, doesnt make him a boring fighter. And as far as killer instinct, what about the Sokodjou fight?

by --utaptout-- on May 26, 2008 5:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

soko was very tentative once he began being schooled by machida, he got scared in the middle of the first round.

Oh man here comes the Soku thing. Again, Soku was 4-1, no experience. Linx I can understand what your saying to an extent. But I just think he’s more interested in keeping his perfect record than have an exciting fight. And me comparing him to Kalib is just me being an ass.

It’s probably to soon to comment on this but if you guys want to start speculating about UFC 100, here’s what I think Dana White ought to put together. It should be a ten to fifteen fight event with five of those fights be a title fight (one in each weight class), they ought to try and book Madison Square Gardens, and it ought to be on one of the major networks. Even if the whole event just loses money for the UFC (which if it’s hyped up enough I don’t think it will) that kind of event would attract so many new fans to the sport that it would make up for it five times over in a couple months or so. They could call it something like “UFC 100, Arrival.”

by Emelianenko is God on May 26, 2008 2:46 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Kill two birds with one stone and have BJ move up as the current LTWT champion and have him fight GSP at WLWT for GSP’s belt, that will be epic and on an epic card like 100. bj/GSP, Wandy/Rampage or Hendo/Wandy, Silva/shogun(if shogun dropped down to 185), and then forget having a LTWT title fight and a Heavyweight title fight and just have the three most explosive divisions fight title bouts with the LTWT champion still fighting in one (against GSP). . . 4 champions, 3 TRUE #1 contenders, 2 extra action packed bouts to fill out the main card, maybe a Florian or a Lesnar fight would do. It will be action packed for sure!!! Im sure Dana has his hopes for the fights on that night and is tring to do his darndest to make them happen. All you can do is hope his vision is the same as yours huh = )

by ( (Adam G) ) on May 26, 2008 3:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

not a bad idea but i don’t think they could pull off the “title fight in each weight class”, unless a majority of the PPVs afterwards have AMAZING main events or be FREE on TV. if they used up every champ for 1 event i doubt ppl would be buying the $45 PPVs afterwards. Just my thoughts

by SayItAintSo on May 26, 2008 3:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

They would have to have no title fights for a while both before and after. You couldn’t have them before this event because someone might be hurt or something, and of course after the event for the same reason.

by Toms Bombs on May 26, 2008 4:15 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thats why no heavyweight, so you can have the next PPV without a title bout, just a co main event of high stature and then the next PPV has the heavyweight title. THEN your back in business with whatever champion took the least beating or had the easiest fight in the 100 by 3 PPVs later.

Thats true, hey man im prayin to the MMA Gods to make it happen along wit ya lol

by SayItAintSo on May 26, 2008 10:17 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The best idea for this would be to have GSP, BJ, Anderson, and Rampage all fight in the Octogan at the same time. Winner takes all.

Also, they’d probably want to have chains and a metal chair lying around. Every so often someone throws in a python, and fire explodes out of the floor etc. Now that would attract viewers.

Seriously though, I like you idea. Plenty of big entertaining matches to play before and after so you wouldn’t have to worry about not having a title for a little while. Atleast have middle weight, Welter, and LightHeavy titles fights in one night or something.

I think Silva needs to fight Evans or Irvin next!

Chuck Lidell fights Lyoto Machida

Winner Chuck/Machida gets title shot.

Loser fights loser of Rampage/Forrest.

Shogun vs Soko

by Gameface on May 26, 2008 2:47 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

if ppl are hating on lyoto now imagine after a fight with chuck, both fighters are counter strikers and we all know chuck isn’t going to loose any fans, but machida might loose the few he has (except for me).

machida needs someone aggressive, someone who doesn’t stop and always goes for the kill, that someone is wandy. best scenario for me is wandy vs liddell II, machida vs thiago silva (winner of machida vs thiago gets a title shot).

second scenario wandy vs machida, thiago vs evans, liddell vs shogun (winner of liddell vs shogun gets title shot).

by linx on May 26, 2008 3:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

if shogun beats chucky in a decisive way and forrest looses to page in a devastating way (both scenarios I see highly possible), shogun should get back to the numero uno spot in the rankings.

I do see Forrest losing in a very devestating way, but I don’t see Shogun getting the number 1 spot back anytime soon, Especially if he fights Chuck. He just lost to Forrest, and since then has had 2 surgeries on the same knee. Now, after all of that, his comeback fight is against Chuck? No way he wins that fight.

The same way that Wandy beat Chuck?

by naturalshadow on May 27, 2008 12:50 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

shogun is way, WAY better than wandy for starters. And I assure you that in a potential wandy vs chuck II match wandy will come out victorious. It’s all about being comfortable in the cage, and he seems to be getting there.

by linx on May 27, 2008 6:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

if lyoto fought the ICEMAN, he wouldn’t be able to run away from Chuck to a cheap decsion win. Chuck is a counter stiker but he isn’t scared to eat the occasional fist or kick to hit his oppoenent. Chuck would eventually stop chasing and make lyoto come to him and then KO this boring a$$ “elusive” so called fighter.
just because i don’t like his style doesn’t make me a noob or casual fan.i haven’t missed any big MMA event for years.

wandy would be more competitive at 185, he would kick more ass, plus! 185 needs more fighters!

Shogun should drop down to 185 as well!

ok, wandy I can see being able to drop, but shogun? no way he can make 185 and still be healthy.

by linx on May 26, 2008 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, A. silva should move up then!! his dominace in the 185 division and the lack of contenders there might cause that anyway.

by --utaptout-- on May 26, 2008 5:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree, he should fight okami, get a rematch with hendo, and move up. there really isn’t anybody else that could pose a threat to him at MW.

by linx on May 26, 2008 6:05 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Hey, Wand fans, he never WENT anywhere! If by “he’s back” you mean he’s back to winning, then yes, I agree. But to say he “wasn’t himself” simply because he lost… that’s BS.

Look who he’s lost to: CroCop, Henderson, and Chuck via decision. And I’m not saying Wandy couldn’t beat those three guys, but many of the guys that Wandy has annihilated have been B-level fighters. (Yes, I know, he’s smashed Rampage twice, which is why that should be one of his next 2-3 fights.) Again, I’m NOT saying Wand isn’t an A-level fighter, because I think he his is.

I’m just tired of people implying that he lost to CroCop, Henderson, and Chuck because “he wasn’t himself.” If that argument has any teeth, it’s the fight with Chuck as it was his first in the Octagon after many years. But he didn’t look bad in his fight with Chuck, he just wasn’t able to close the distance like he did with Jardine.

And did he ever close with Jardine!? I love how Wand stepped right into the first Jardine leg kick, ate it, and landed a bomb. That, I’m sure, was a key part of the game play. Wait for a leg kick, get inside, and go to town.

by Soups on May 26, 2008 3:06 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

That was my analysis on his gameplan as well, good call. Also, don’t forget that Wand DID beat crocop and hendo each the first time he fought them. The first cro-cop fight was called a draw only because of some B.S. Pride/K-1 rule where if theres no KO, it was an automatic draw. Wand owned Cro-Cop in that fight though.

by --utaptout-- on May 26, 2008 3:22 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I hate to be the one to back the statement "he wasn’t himself", but he really wasn’t. he lost to dan when he was sick, the night before he was in the hospital with a fever (search it, it’s true). That’s the reason dana white was so mad at pride for messing up the then wandy vs liddell possible fight, it was because they let him fight even though he was sick (but to back up Pride, what were they supposed to do, give Henderson another fighter in 12 hours?). the fight he lost and was 100% wandy was the one against cro cop. the other two are arguable. that’s how I see it anyway.

by linx on May 26, 2008 3:23 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Wandy did beat Cro Cop and Henderson in the fisrt and lost in the rematch.

by Ro on May 26, 2008 3:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah, but his first fight with them both were long ago.

by linx on May 26, 2008 3:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Chuck will probably only need one more win to get a title shot, and the winner of his bout with Shogun will most likey be the number 1 contender but remember this fight will happen in September.

Machida could possibly fight Rashad for a number 1 or 2 slot.
and
Wanderlei Silva could possibly fight Thiago Silva or James Irvin for a number 3, 4, or 5 spot.

LHW is so stacked.

If TUF didnt hold up the belt for so long, we wouldnt have all these number 1 contenders piling up.

by c-war on May 26, 2008 3:13 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

why should Chuck only have to beat 1 more opponent to get a title shot? That makes him 2-2 since he lost and those are hardly contender numbers. There are other guys who deserve a shot more than Chuck. Thiago, Machida, and Rashad are all undefeated. Maybe their names aren’t as “marketable” as Chucks’ is but they are showing more than he is.
Thiago 13-0
Machida 13-0
Rashad 16-0-1

Just because he is Chuck Liddell shouldn’t make him an automatic title contender with a 2-2 record in his last 4 fights when you compare him to those guys. if anything Rashad deserves the title shot first.

by SpiderStyle on May 26, 2008 3:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree, chuck should only get a title shot if fighting one of those you mentioned, unless it’s against shogun.

by linx on May 26, 2008 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

SpiderStyle: Chucks not fighting b-level fighters. So if he beats Shogun then yes I think he deserves a title shot again. Look at it this way GSP fought Koshcheck who is not a top fighter then a past his prime Hughes to get a title shot again. BJ was coming off of two losses and was givin a title shot with Pulver. Anderson Silva beat Leben and was givin his title shot. Rampage came in to the UFC, beat a smaller Eastman and was givin a title shot. So Liddell beating Wandy one of the top dogs and IMO after beating Shogun another top dog, why do you think Chuck doesnt deserve a title shot?????

by JV on May 26, 2008 4:25 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I’m sorry but the second fight BJ had with Pulver was not a title fight, it was the main event of a TUF finale. In the first fight, which was a title fight, BJ was coming off a few wins, so whats the deal?

by --utaptout-- on May 26, 2008 6:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Tell that to Dana White. If Liddell wins, Dana will give him a title shot. He wants Liddell to beat Rampage just as much as Liddell does himself.

by Toms Bombs on May 26, 2008 4:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yes, because then he will have a wanderlei/rampage match, and if Wanderlei can beat Rampage again…imagine a Chuck vs Wanderlei for the title! Fing AWESOME!

by Chadx23 on May 26, 2008 11:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

If Chuck beats Shogun in September, he would be 2-1 since he lost the title and would have victories over Wandy and Shogun. To suggest that those undefeated guys are more deserving doesn’t seem to factor in the opponents. If you look at Evans last few fights, we are talking a controversial draw with Tito, and wins over Bisping and Salmon. Tito faced Chuck twice in his career and got KTFO’d both times. Thiago has Drwal, Mendes, and Houston Alexander in his last 3. Chuck might be able to beat all 3 of them in 1 night. You can make more of an argument for Machida, but he has 5 victories via decision in his last 6 fights.

If Chuck beats Shogun, he should get a shot at the belt. Ideally, Wandy beats Machida or Evans in his next fight and sets himself up for the Chuck/Rampage winner.

by Sacto on May 26, 2008 7:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

thats a huge IF about chuck vs shogun if you ask me, he ain’t gonna go past shogun. we’ll have shogun vs page II soon.

by linx on May 26, 2008 8:10 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

God I wish I could agree with that…as much as I would want to see Shogun win that fight, I just dont think he will. His aggrressive style will land him with a counterpunch KO from chuck, and Liddell is impossible to clinch with, so he wont be landing any kness.

by --utaptout-- on May 27, 2008 12:03 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

2 things…Its not all about your record. It’s about who you beat and how dominant you were. How do you think Forrest got a title shot after losing to Tito and Jardine? If Chuck beats Rua, that means he would have beaten him and Silva as well, both top 5 guys. You beat two top 5 guys back to back, you are no doubt a number 1 contender.

Machida beat Tito, and wasnt very dominant, but that was his first top ten fight, Soko could be argued but you get my point. I think Rashad may need one or two more wins, he hasnt even beaten a top ten yet and barely beat Bisping.

Thiago hasnt beaten anyone, although his wins were more than impressive, you gotta give him a top spot.

So 1: It depends on you beat.
2: It depends on how you beat ’em.

Chris Leben
Micheal Bisping
Rich Franklin
Spider Silva (will happen)
GSP (if GSP gain up to 185 lb)

If Rampage loses he will fight Wanderlie next. If he wins then Wanderlie should get to fight Forrest. As for 185 I want to see Rich Franklin vs Dan Henderson or Bisping vs one of them. Chuck is going to fight Shogun next. Manchida will probably fight Rashad or Thiago so that two unbeatens collide. Manchida is one fight away from a title shot or a date with Chuck. I think Manchida can beat anyone in the division but he is dull to watch. To evasive, yes it gets thw W but it sux to watch. That is why Wanderlie is loved by fans…he is full tilt

I love Wandy, but goodness he seems smaller than he was in Pride. His body just doesn’t look packed with muscle like it did before. Dunno. When he fought Page they didn’t look that different, except Page was maybe a bit bigger. Now I look at them and Page looks way way bigger.

I’d love to see him fight Soko, though his standup was scary fast at 84. It was impressive. It’s hard to imagine anyone imposing their gameplan on Machida right now. He’s like GSP but smaller and does jumping Karate kicks.

Ground Game man you got it nearly perfect. Evans V Silva could be a Sept or Oct matchup to decide the next contender for LW title shot,in early NOV/DEC Chuck/Shogun and Lyoto/Thiago fight w/winners facing off early 09 for midyear title shot. Soku v Irvin would be a highlight reel KO one way or the other. I might switch Reljic and Gouveia and have Jardine/Gouveia both coming of losses and needing a win and Reljic/Alexander providing obvious highlight material. I am never any good at predicting these things though, this is just how I would like to see it go.
