Brian Stann vs Steve Cantwell WEC title fight booked for August 3

Brian Stann (6-0) will defend his WEC light heavyweight title for the first time when returns the cage against Steve Cantwell (5-1) on August 3. The "All-American" made the announcement on the Howard Stern show this past Thursday.

No location or possible venue for the showdown is known at this time.

Stann captured the 205-pound crown with a knockout win of then champion, Doug Marshall, at WEC 33: "Back to Vegas" on March 26. The heavy-handed former Marine has five straight wins for the Zuffa-owned promotion and none of them have gone beyond the first round.

Cantwell has strung two wins together, finishing Tim McKenzie via submission (rear naked choke) at WEC 33. Prior to that he pounded out Justin McElfresh at WEC 29 in August 2007. It was apparently good enough to earn him another shot at Stann.

Stann and Cantwell met at WEC 26 last March ... and it didn't last very long. In fact, Stann knocked out Cantwell only 41 into round one.

So mark your calendars for the next WEC event in August. Could we possibly get Filho-Sonnen II for the WEC middleweight title as well?

Stay tuned.

clearly the wec is feeding stann fighters while he improves. we should just rename that the “Kimbo Effect”. Stann is easily marketable and lets not forget that zuffa owns the wec and dana always favors mroe marketable champions than those who are the best.

He beat the champ in the first round. A champ that had proved himself to be a heavy handed mauler. How can you call that the ‘Kimbo effect’? Who else would you put in there against him that is in the WEC LHW?

Filho/Sonnen II would be a dope addition to that card.

Stann has only fought 6 times in his career. Why is someone getting a rematch with him already? Its not like thier first fight was even close. I think I remember this being the first time I seen Stann fight. Should be EASY money to be made once this event rolls around.

Kimbo effect? Assanine. He KOed the rhino in the first round. That makes no sense.

This is the guy that keeps dedicating his fights to all his buddies that died in Iraq? You’ll know when he’s scared of someone when he forgets to do that.

The WEC better find some fighters at 205 or Stann will have the title for years to come. The 205 weight class in the WEC is absolutely horrible

Stann is not scared of this guy thats for sure. It was an early stoppage in the first fight if I remember correct. Its on TV all the freaking time, so you could probably change the channell to versus right now and it will be on. Cantwell fucked up the first time acting like he had went through what the marines went through and Stann made him pay.
