UFC Quick Quote: BJ Penn would 'annihilate' Kimbo Slice

kimbo slice bj penn

"The amount of talent and fights we put on are second to none. Think about it, the CBS fight that they are coming up with, who gives a crap about Kimbo Slice? This guy can't fight MMA. You know what would happen if he fought in the UFC? I'd put him in against (lightweight champion) BJ Penn and (Slice) would get annihilated. The guy he is fighting, James Thompson, might get knocked out before he gets into the cage. Kimbo has no credibility at all in MMA. ... I am telling you, BJ Penn would beat him."

-- UFC President Dana White tells the Press-Telegram that UFC Lightweight Champion BJ Penn (155 pounds) would annihilate Elite XC heavyweight Kimbo Slice (235 pounds) in a mixed martial arts bout. Slice is a famous street brawler who recently transitioned to the sport and will compete in a high profile fight with James Thompson during the main event of the Elite XC debut on network television (CBS) on May 31.

hell let them go at that just mean more money for both companies everyone would watch regardless of who they thought would win

by chad on May 23, 2008 9:36 PM EDT up reply actions

gotta say i agree, standing or on the ground BJ would win

by BLOodyMEss on May 22, 2008 11:22 AM EDT reply actions

Even of I do agree, which I do, we’ll never know! I can’t understand why Dana wouldn’t cross promote just one time, for this reason exactly.
Nog/Kimbo
GSP/Lawler
BJ/Noons
Mir/Bigfoot
Anderson silva/anyone

Then we never have to hear Gary Shaw again.

by kevin on May 22, 2008 11:34 AM EDT up reply actions

eh, Nog/Bigfoot
GSP/Shields
BJ/Noons
Herring/Kimbo
Anderson/Lawler

Nog/Bigfoot would be the only fight i would worry about, Silva has heavy hands and supposedly a good ground game

lol, did you watch his last fight?

by kevin on May 22, 2008 1:02 PM EDT up reply actions

no, did his ground look bad?

a lot of people believe ricco beat nog though

by neihrick on May 22, 2008 2:31 PM EDT up reply actions

lets just say you making any positive comment without seeing it is ridiculous. An out of shape, gassed rodriguez looked better

by kevin on May 22, 2008 2:56 PM EDT up reply actions

ya Bigfoot looked awful vrs Rodriguez.
That was the only time I’d seen him fight, so I’m just gonna have to assume he’s awful.

Agreed – have the UFC stars dominate the rest of the MMA hype and Dana White wins because it will show how superior the UFC fighters are. Then it would be like comparing the NFL to the area football

by Derrick Fox on May 22, 2008 6:16 PM EDT up reply actions

Look, BJ is the best fighter in the world POUND FOR POUND, and tho Slice is just a brawler off the streets, it would take alot for BJ to bang with him. If this fight would ever take place, which it never would, BJ would have to get thru the first 2 rounds, let slice punch himself out, and then try to submit him. BJ is my favorite fighter, has been for a long time, but…. Kimbo is no bitch. Plus he out weighs BJ by what, 60 lbs plus.

by the heat on May 22, 2008 11:27 AM EDT up reply actions

i agree BJ would win this fight too… but not standing… lets at least give some credit to kimbo… he would knock BJ the f out if the fight took place on the feet… that would be a boxing match… and sorry to say this… but the other J penn’s would be scraping BJ up from the floor.

by haemophiliac on May 22, 2008 11:30 AM EDT up reply actions

BJ wasn’t knocked out against Machida, and Machida is just a little better at stricking then Kimbo. I don’t think Kimbo would win standing or on the ground (and I like Kimbo)

by Haze on May 22, 2008 11:34 AM EDT up reply actions

I think BJ would win but he’d have to be real careful about getting hit. If BJ could get him on the ground (which should be relatively easy) he could easily submit him.

I also think GSP and A. Silva would make short work of Slice.

by DonnyG on May 22, 2008 12:06 PM EDT up reply actions

kimbo has much heavier hands than machida and is a better boxer than him… machida is in and out… he’s not a guy that would go for the kill… don’t even know who he’s knocked out apart from franklin… kimbo for sure is a more powerful striker than machida… if the fight was standing… for sure he would knock BJ out…

and the machida fight wasn’t a standup war… i agree BJ would beat kimbo… but not on the feet…

by haemophiliac on May 22, 2008 12:08 PM EDT up reply actions

Agree to disagree, so you think Kimbo is a better boxer than Machida?

by Haze on May 22, 2008 12:51 PM EDT up reply actions

boxer – yes… more power in his hands – yes… more technical all round striker – no… machida isn’t a boxer… he doesn’t even have a boxer’s stance or hand/upper body movement… at all… his legs are really wide and he has a slightly low stance… he strikes and retreats… continuously… kimbo is stronger, has more power, and yes… he is a better BOXER…

by haemophiliac on May 22, 2008 1:11 PM EDT up reply actions

donny… i think silva would make short work of most people in mma at the moment… in any division… not just slice… i think he could beat liddell… and probably rampage too… in fact… i think he could probably clean out the light-heavyweight division too.

by haemophiliac on May 22, 2008 1:13 PM EDT up reply actions

Your insane if you think Kimbo can even touch Rampage! Rampage would destroy this noob in first round standing or in the ground no problem. Kimbo does not have credability in the mma world

Dana, even though I agree, you have once again taken the low road. You’re a great businessman, but a LOUSY spokesperson for the UFC. Sometimes it’s better to stay quiet and be thought a d*ck, than to open one’s mouth and remove all doubt. Or something like that. lol

At this point I think Dana is doing his competition a favor. To mention Kimbo and BJ in the same sentence is an insult to BJ. And it just gives Kimbo publicity that he does not deserve (according to MMA purists). Bad move, Dana.

by OJR on May 22, 2008 11:26 AM EDT reply actions

i agree w/ this statement. dana is only helping the kimbo hype. wierd comparison imo, but probably accurate.

by b.w. on May 22, 2008 8:46 PM EDT up reply actions

hahahahahahahaha, kimbo would kill bj, he’d knock him out with 1 punch, and it wouldn’t even have to connect, lol, bj could half ass block the punch and kimbo would still knock him out. he couldn’t come anywhere near taking kimbo down, lil bj might shoot for a leg, but kimbo would just pick him up one handed and power bomb him or something. dana’s wrong about that and he’s wrong about “nobody cares about kimbo”, bs, there’s probly gonna be 1 million people watch cbs just to see kimbo

by duece 4 on May 22, 2008 11:27 AM EDT reply actions

Yeah I think alot of people will be watching too, but I don’t think we will learn much. Until Kimbo fights somebody decent, we won’t know anymore than we do right now. Can’t wait to see Gina back in the ring.

That was back before most of the people he fought new what bjj was all about. They did not know how to stop the take down. If Kimbo knew he was fighting BJ he would obviously train to stop the take down.

by ufcmn89 on May 22, 2008 2:24 PM EDT up reply actions

That was then, this is now, BIG DIFFERENCE. Even the one trick ponys now, have a MUCH more well rounded game. Back then most of those one discipline fighters didn’t even know what BJJ was, so how could they defend against it. Kimbo would KILL BJ. I don’t think Kimbo is great, he is just to big, agressive and HARD hitting for a MUCH smaller man to deal with.

by Gord on May 24, 2008 9:06 PM EDT up reply actions

I have a feeling there will be a lot of people watching this fight as well.

The only way Elite XC bombs is if Kimbo Slice loses. They are putting the history of their organization on his shoulders.

I did like the comment about Thompson getting knocked out before he even enters the cage. Sometimes I’ve wondered if the guy will accidentally knock himself out when he does all that flailing around during his introduction.

by RogueSpear on May 22, 2008 11:33 AM EDT reply actions

LOL, that would be awesome.

by Haze on May 22, 2008 11:34 AM EDT up reply actions

The reason I think its a stupid comment is Dana is not wiling to back his comment up. Talk all you want if your willing to back it up, but he’s not willing to let BJ go fight Kimbo, so he ought to just keep his mouth shut. If I thought BJ could whip Kimbo and said it in public, then I’d let him go give it a shot. Don’t see Dana doing that.

I agree man, great point.

Dana is just talking a bunch of smack to promote UFC 84 this weekend. Even if Dana were to cross promote with Elite-XC and allow BJ-Penn to fight Kimbo NSAC would probably never allow it.

I’m not too surprised that BJ’s a fan. BJ’s always been more of a fan of “fighters” than “athletes” (i.e. GSP).

Kimbo’s just making a (very good) living. It’s not like he’s taking food off somebody else’s table. He’s getting paid by a millionaire.

by Pat on May 22, 2008 1:34 PM EDT up reply actions

GSP is a fighter and an athlete, which makes him a better FIGHTER. Also I always though (most) BJ fans were a bit delusional, but to think he would beat Kimbo is a joke. I’m a huge GSP fan and think he can handle anyone near his weight class, but kimbo would HURT him BADDLY,same goes for BJ. BJ can’t handle the strength of Hughes, how is he going to handle the big ape of a man Kimbo is.

by Gord on May 24, 2008 8:56 PM EDT up reply actions

I’m just laughing at the “for those of you to lazy to click the link” comment. Is that really lazy? Or perhaps impatient? Calling people lazy for sitting at their computers and not clicking a link is really funny to me. I can just see a Saturday Night Live skit made out of it. Two guys too lazy to click on a link, so the guy in the middle has to lean over them to click on the link for them.

Anyone who’s a fan of BJ should check out this game. You can box Sean Sherk as BJ Penn! It’s pretty funny.

by pat splat on May 22, 2008 11:37 AM EDT reply actions

Lets not forget that BJ has ventured into igher weight classes with mixed success. He couldn’t beat Machida who fights at 205, so why would he have success with a much larger Kimbo?

Quite frankly I’m sick of everyone hopping on the BJ band-wagon. Everyone remembers the last two fights where he was dominant, but lets not forget the BJ Penn that came out of shape and got out-worked and out-classed by GSP and Hughes. He still has something to prove to me.

And why does everyone hate Kimbo? Sure he’s fought cans.. no doubt, but these are his first few fights. With Bas Rutten’s tuteledge and his undeniable physical endowments Slice could be threat down the road. Right now its just too early to tell.

by BadVibes on May 22, 2008 11:40 AM EDT reply actions

Sorry but I respectfully disagree.

BJ has NOTHING to prove to the likes of you, keyboard warrior extraordinaire.

And to me either.

He was not outclassed by anyone. He gave GSP hell and lost a decision. He beat Hughes once.

Give BJ his respect if not your admiration.

I completely agree with you on Kimbo. Too early to tell…

by OJR on May 22, 2008 12:44 PM EDT up reply actions

A. I think Machida would annihilate Kimbo. And the Penn-Machida fight was pretty close… It wasn’t like Lyoto destroyed BJ…

2. I don’t call losing a split decision being out-classed. (personally, I think that a split decision in a #1 contender or championship fight should be grounds for a near automatic rematch)

III. Wining half of your fights against Hughes isn’t being outclassed either. (I want to see Hughes-Penn 3 before GSP-Penn 2)

UFC 72? Franklin/Okami main event.

UFC 77: Schafer/Bonnar, Starnes/Belcher, Gurgel/Robinson, Sylvia/Vera.

Not one of those fights were exciting. NOT ONE. That card blew terribly.

Dana White needs to literally shut up. He is like that annoying dog that just barks at literally everything. Dana, you run your business, you keep saying “He is not MMA” if he is not MMA, then why are you talking about it? Dana needs to just run the UFC and shut it.

by "Mr. NC-17" on May 22, 2008 12:04 PM EDT up reply actions

Yea, I was just picking a currently bad card, no doubt there have been even worse cards before.

Agree about UFC 72 and 77, other than that I think of:
UFC 78: main event Evans-Bisping (decision) yawn
UFC 67: Eddie Sanchez marathon, Lutter not making weight

I also don’t get the hatin toward Kimbo. Sure he has no formal education in any of martial arts, but if Dana puts guys like Blake Bowman, Charles McCarthy, Marlon Sims, Gabe Ruediger, Allen Berube […] in the Octagon, then surely someone who trains under Bas Rutter deserves a break from Dana’s continous bickering.

Yeah, it’s a good article. Dana White talks a lot but speaks the truth sometimes.

Later in the article he talks about cross promotions and that there is no chance in hell it would happen!

And often, through the media, the smaller companies express their interest to do a co-promotion with the heavy-handed, cash-machine UFC, not just for money but to see which organization has the better talent.

White brushes off the propositions and sees it as just an opportunity for the smaller, less-exposed organizations to ride the UFC’s success.

“Why would I cross promote with other companies? They have nothing,” White said. “They have no fighters, no credibility. I would never cross promote. What for? We have the best fighters.”

Shut your hole and book the fight Dana! Put your money where your mouth is and get some outside fighters to prove the UFC is the big kid on the block.
I think BJ could take a shot from Kimbo and live, but Kimbo on the ground would tap quicker than the F bomb coming out of Dana’s mouth.
After this card what will Elite XC do? Will they have Kimbo fight every televised card? Kimbo is just hype!

I know B.J. is an extremely talented fighter, and I am the furthest thing from a Kimbo fan, but some of the B.J. love is a bit too strong in here. There is no chance in hell that B.J. could ever beat Kimbo standing. Kimbo does have some boxing skills, and hits hard. Not to mention the 75 lb. weight advantage. I do think B.J. could submit him, but lets be reasonable, he isn’t going to knock Kimbo out.

by naturalshadow on May 22, 2008 1:27 PM EDT reply actions

naturalshadow, I totally agree. I think BJ is great but I don’t think he’ll be able to knock him out as easily as some people claim on here. he’s not freakin’ superman.

it’s stupid for dana to make such a comment though. he’s comparing one of the best p4p fighters out there with a guy that has a pro record of 2 and 0. that’s silly…

by rhv on May 22, 2008 1:38 PM EDT up reply actions

Does anyone really care if Affliction only has this show? Even if it is a one and done situation it was still an awesome card that Dana could say absolutely about. There will always be people willing to pay top $ to put on a big fight. The UFC will never dominate everyone. There will always be competion no matter how small. Affliction did an excellent job signing up some amazing fights. If AA signs on, then it has a better HW card than the UFC can put on. Let’s just enjoy it for what it is. An awesome event.

Exactly, quit bumping your gums unless you are willing to cross promote. We all now that The UFC has the best talent in the world so to continue to discredit Elite XC like he is doing is kind of childish. He just can’t stand the fact that the fans will watch this because it is free so he is going to do anything in his power to degrade and belittle Elite XC. Oh yeah and this CBS card is about equal to UFC 85 IMO so he really needs to evaluate what he wants to say before he says it.

Dana is right. Kimbo is a farce!! Just goes to show u how far off the other organizations are when they have to promote a guy who can’t fight MMA. I dont know guys anyone can be beaten. Can you imagine a punch from Slice to BJs Dome. Really he would be rocked, Slice would just simply have to play it by ear. Is he out, then beat em. Is he mildly wobbled if so stay away and keep it up.

I dont know what you guys think Penn is made of. We will see how he does vs Sherk before we start doing some knee bending.

As much as I think Kimbo is a spaz on the net (old days) I think its only a matter of time and him and Brock will be locking horns say (3 yrs).

Oh no please dont tell me everyone thinks BJ would beat Lesnar…

i think dana white would honestly beat kimbo in a boxing match.. he is an ex boxer and from what i see kimbo isnt that great just good fanbase… bj would submit him in 30 seconds easily

Dana is usually full of Sh%t.

BUT HE’S GOT THIS ONE 100% correct.

Sounds like Dana really just wants to test his boxing skills against Kimbo.

if bj could stand with lyoto machida for 3 full rounds, whos striking is hundreds of light years ahead of kimbos in ALL ASPECTS DONT EVEN THINK OF DISAGREEING WIT ME ON THIS PEOPLE. He will easily get the better of Kimbo in all areas of the game. I would be laughing so fucking hard when BJ puts Kimbo on his back and his punching and elbowing the fuck out of his face. His face would have so many gashes and deep cuts evry1 wud start calling him Kimbo Sliced

Dana may be right or wrong but what the hell he’s bringing up BJ for, BJ has no part of this he’s not even heavyweight and the fight will never happen so what’s the point bringing this up for Dana? Shut the hell up and deal with your own business Dana you only own 10% of the UFC and quit actin like you own UFC and talkin shit to other fighters and you’re not even an mma fighter once so shut up. BJ probaly thinkin “what the hell Dana bringin me up in this for, i don’t no part of this nobody tells me what to do.” if you don’t like Kimbo then go up to his face and say it you pussy, if you’re not a pussy then fight him in the cage.

BJ is the best pound-for-pound fighter in the world. But he’s 155 and Kimbo is 250. Kimbo ain’t as good, but that size and strength would have him win. No doubt.

And Dana’s a dumbass. “Fedor isn’t a top 5 heavyweight.” REally? Who beats him? Nog?
