MMA Quick Quote: Sylvia is not a sacrificial lamb

"I'm not a sacrificial lamb. They needed a guy that was not only good enough but who wanted to fight Fedor. A lot of guys won't fight him. He deserves all the respect he gets, he's earned it, but I know I have a chance to win. In the end he's six feet tall and I'm six-foot-eight so obviously I'm going to keep try and keep it standing. He finishes most guys by armbar and I'm training a lot of armbar defense. I have a great camp back in Iowa and a lot of great guys to train with. If I can keep it standing and stay out of a bad position I will come out on top."

-- Former UFC heavyweight champion Tim "The Maine-iac" Sylvia talks to the media during this morning's press conference about facing former Pride FC heavyweight champion Fedor Emelianenko at the Affliction: Banned pay-per-view on July 19 at the Honda Center in Anaheim, California.

Tim Sylvia Your gonna get raped!

by Macho Bullshit on May 22, 2008 3:20 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Tim had beter start praying. He will need more than armbar defense to survive this fight.

by UKmmaBOY on May 22, 2008 3:21 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

alot of guys wont’ fight him? ummmm….how about randy?
stupid sylvia

by bradpittfightclub on May 22, 2008 3:24 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

There is a diference between “wan’t” and “can’t”, Randy can’t fight Fedor until October.

by Haze on May 22, 2008 3:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

wtf is “wan’t”?

by jd on May 22, 2008 4:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

lets hope tim dosn’t literally crap his pants like in the past. ugh haha.

by Macho Bullshit on May 22, 2008 3:25 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Has he really crapped in his pants? I would believe it if you said yes.

by mattchupichu on May 22, 2008 6:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, agaisnt Ausseirio Silva I believe, Tim was sick with a high fever and diarrea. You know how diarrea is, ever tried to lift something heavy while in the middle of intense diarria?

by The Anomaly on May 22, 2008 8:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No, I have never tried heavy lifting while in the middle of intense squirts. How did that go for you?

agreed!!!! the can crusher will not be able to over come the reach of Timmy…what will Randy do now that his fight with Fedor is pointless (If Timmy wins)

I am hoping and praying for the exact same thing. And besides why does everyone hate the one guy that is a clone of the Rock’em Sock’em Robot? You all loved them as kids!

by ontariofightfan on May 23, 2008 7:56 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I just hate all the fedor lovers… sylvia is right he probly has the best chance to beat him out of fedors last 5 opponents… So you can all call me crazy or whatever but im saying right here so remember it… Im taking sylvia by tko… and once and for all the fedor love fest can stop!!!!

by mike22 on May 22, 2008 3:31 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I am right there with ya!!

by Haze on May 22, 2008 3:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree I think Sylvia has a good chance, but look at what Nog did to him. It made me question his heart. He was whoppin on Nog for the entire fight and when they got to the groud it almost seemed like he gave up and let Nog sink in that choke. He will have to fight a perfect fight to get the W.
Personally I hope he wins to steal all of Randy’s thunder for the so called super fight between him and Fedor.

by bnf on May 22, 2008 4:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That made me question the mans heart as well… He cant fight like that with fedor or he will get subbed soon as it goes to the ground but lets just hope he has learned from that and wont make the same mistake again…. i cant lie i kinda wanna see randy vs fedor… i dont think either would get domminated, i think it would be a really good fight that could go either way.. but saying that i dont think it will ever happen!

by mike22 on May 22, 2008 4:27 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i think if fedor wins, the fight would be drawn up almost straight away that whould give both fighters 3 months to train for the fight

by Valentino on May 22, 2008 5:11 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I have been siding with Tim since the announcment. Don’t know who will actually win, but I want tim to win so bad. I want this Fedor BS to end.

C’mon Timmy, you can do it, the world is in your hands, you fight for the humans!!!!!

by The Anomaly on May 22, 2008 8:39 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

More like, look what Tim did to Nog. Tim was owning Nog the whole fight and Nog survived ,because he is Nog. NO ONE (including Fedor) can take the puishment, Nog can take. Fedor has a pretty good chin, but he gets tagged early in all his fights. Tim hits WAY harder than Lindland. Tim’s going to pepper Fedor and he won’t be able to recover from Tim’s power. Fedor’s to reckless for Sylvia’s style. Tim will win this fight. Fedor’s management said along time ago,“Tim is a bad match for Fedor”, and they were right.

by Gord on Jun 5, 2008 11:25 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Oh i can’t wait, it’s about time.. anybody know where this fight is being held and when tickets go on sale?

by Elvis on May 22, 2008 3:35 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Sylvia definatley has a shot, not the best one, but he efinatley has a shot. Got to go with Fedor, but I’m not closing the door on Sylvia.

by DB on May 22, 2008 3:37 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Regardless on the odds, I will bet atleast $400 on Fedor!

Tim is going to get Rocked by one of Fedor’s Nasty Diving left hooks (Lead hand). This will allow Fedor to close the distance, clinch, Twist his world class hips, get the takedown and pound away on Tim’s face until Ti loosens up and then Fedor will either Take his Shoulder or Elbow off Via Armbar or Kimura. Tim was completely Dominated by Couture….so there is no way that Tim will make it to a decision against the Russian….Fedor will win 1st or 2nd round!

Does anyone know if it will be a 3 or 5 round fight? Not that it matter because Tim wont last 10 minutes, but its good to know .

All Hail KING FEDOR!!!!

by john on May 22, 2008 3:39 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Since Affliction doesn’t have champions yet, I would have to assume that it is 3 rounds.

by ViolentMike on May 22, 2008 4:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

VM: Or they can just do what Dana does every time he wants to see a 5 round fight, slap an interim title label on it an succer the athletic commission into making it 5 rounds! lol

by john on May 22, 2008 6:39 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i think tim will give him a better fight than you think, basicaly due to fedors inactivity and lack of seriuos competition. tim is big , strong and always in shape( i cant believe im making a case for big poopy) and a 5 rndr would work to his favor no? so who ami picking?………..fedor, im not that stupid.

by b.w. on May 22, 2008 8:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with John. Tim will tire out from Fedor taking him down and then the sledge hammer left hooks will rain down on Big Tim’s squash. Fedor is no joke and the world will soon find out.

by Big B on May 22, 2008 5:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Easier than HMC. Fedor by Hogan leg drop.

by Mrs.Featherbottom on May 22, 2008 3:41 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I hate to say it, but believe that Tim will win this fight, especially if he is ready mentally. If he has it in his head how great fedor is and is scared of him then he will lose.

Fedor and Matt Hughes are very similiar. Both were great in their era. Both still are, but in this new era of mma Fedor would probably still remain a top 10 HW, but not at the top. A lot of people thought Matt Hughes wqas unstoppable. They have to realize the same about Fedor. He has not had a decent opponent since the day that GSP exposed Hughes, if not before and he no longer in this day of mma be the same as 5 years ago

by fightfan on May 22, 2008 3:45 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

FightFan: That may be the worse comparison I have ever seen made on this site…Congrats you should be proud! lol

Comparing Hughes to Fedor is like Apples and oranges. Hughes is not well rounded, Fedor is! Fedor has still never lost a round since entering PRIDE, Hughes just got completely dominated… You may not like who Fedor has fought in the past 2 years but that does not mean that his abilities are not there anymore!

I cant wait to see Fedor shut all you Haters up When he Abuses Sylvia! I really cant wait! No doubt that Fedor wins this fight!

by john on May 22, 2008 3:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think he was talking about there situations and personas, not comparing fight styles. But id have to disagree there as well.
Hughes was good at one thing and nobody could beat him at it(wrestling). Fedor is much more well rounded.
God I hope Tim can beat him. Your all gonna get a lot of crap from me if Tim wins ill tell you that RIGHT now.

by The Anomaly on May 22, 2008 8:41 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah even situations and personas they’re completely different…Also Fedor is a pudgy bear and Hughes is a ster…ahem…ripped competitor.

The only thing they have in common is that aura of invincibility that once surrounded Hughes and arguably still does around Fedor…But does it? I don’t know. I know Brandon Vera recognises Fedor as numero uno.

by RobH86 on May 22, 2008 8:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Spot on John right on the button!

by Monthblanc on May 23, 2008 12:51 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Bad comparison. Matt Hughes was dominant because of his wrestling and strenghth. Fedor is well rounded, and doesn’t depend on the takedown. He can stand with the best of them.
That said. This could go either way. Hopefully Fedor’s way.

by jess on May 22, 2008 3:57 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

by THORAZINE on May 22, 2008 6:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Fedor and Matt Hughes!!! Very Similiar!!! What?!!???

They are so so different. Fedor has the most well rounded game around. Matt Hughes is a one trick pony, albeit a very good wrestler.

Just watch Fedor’s fights and then you’ll realise that the two are completely different. I won’t get too carried away here but….ahh…nevermind.

by RobH86 on May 22, 2008 8:50 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

He trains a lot of armbar defense. Really? That must be since after Mir broke his arm.

Not to mention of his 4 loses, 3 have been by submission. Well, at least he knows where Fedor is headed in this fight.

by Jeff on May 22, 2008 3:45 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Probably not the best idea to reveal your strategy or training regimen.

Fedor via armbar.

by bostonmmajunkie on May 22, 2008 3:45 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, because it’s suck a big mystery that Fedor has a lot of armbar wins.

by Haze on May 22, 2008 4:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Tim was training a lot of armbar defense for the Nog fight, too bad he forgot to protect his neck (wu tang style) and got guilotined off an armbar attempt transition into a Gullotine!

Seriously, when has Sylvia ever show the ability to defend against anyone on the ground besides Monson? NEVER!
Tim got his arm snapped by Mir
He got leg locked by Arlovski
Ground n Pounded by Randy
Choked by Nogueira

Lets face it Tim is Houston Alexander-ish on the Ground. He has a terribly offy looking guard, No sweeping ability, and he is at a disadvantage even when he is on top position.

How can anyone not think King Fedor is going to Crush this Offy idiot? Fedor is Tim’s nightmare because he is a combo of Tim’s worst match up Stylistically, a submission machine, and the Nastiest Grounbd n POUND I have ever seen!

Not to mention Fedor is solid standing. Ask cro cop! See how he opened up the 2nd round of the cro cop fight with like a 6 hit combo….I swore Cro Cop looked like a heavy bag getting blasted.

If the fight stays standing, Fedor is going to Bully Tim just like Cro Cop was bullied. People say they never seen Cro Cop get Bullied till he fought Fedor, guess What its Tim’s turn next.

All Fedor has to do is mix it up and Tim will be crapping his pants. Just like Randy did. Tim is going ot worry about getting takendown, Randy knew it mixed it up with strikes and takedowns and kept Tim guessing…You people think Fedor hasn’t seen that Tape? Come on man….Fedor is not loosing this fight!!!!!

by UFC-Forums.com on May 22, 2008 3:54 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think Tim definitely has a shot at winning this. Regardless of the outcome, I am excited to see if Fedor’s skills have atrophied at all in the past 2 years of no serious competition.

by San Jose Rob on May 22, 2008 4:01 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

im a big fedor fan, but sylvia is no joke. easily one of the toughest heavyweights anyone can face at the moment. You have to realize that silvia has been fighting the toughest guys as of recently…randy, arlovksi, noguera etc so that will only make him stronger. This wont be an easy win for eihter guy. lets not forget he destroyed noguera the entire time, and if he would have been more careful on not to getting caught, he would have certainly knocked him out or won either way. everyone is saying noguera this and that and he should be fighting fedor again etc. but in reality, this is a tougher match for FEDOR then noguera ever was!

silvia has a huge reach advantage and you will see fedor struggle with that, but unless fedor doesnt come out like his usual self i dont see sylvia winning in the end.

Has Fedor ever been drug tested? Not accusing him, just wondering.

by Soups on May 22, 2008 4:12 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Sylvia lacks that killer instict and is scared of getting hit, he really should have won that fight against Nog. I want to see Fedor fight Randy. That will have everyone pumped and would be the biggest fight ever, that is the only reason I want Fedor to win. If he loses it will destroy the biggest matchup ever in MMA. Dana put the brakes on that one and he is now hoping Sylvia can do it because he dosn’t have total and full control over a Fedor vs Randy fight. Greedy bald headed prick.

by Ade on May 22, 2008 4:17 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Sylvia cant even get laid, I.E. hes lame as appearance on the show blind date. I have noticed that he just dosen’t seem to have the drive he once had. Could it be hes off the steriods?

if he is going to keep this standing I want him to be the Tim sylvia that took on cabbage. There was a man who went in hungry and left it all in the cage.

by Steve-0 on May 22, 2008 4:37 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Those are awful long arms you got stickin out there Timmay! Keep them tucked in or Fedor will snap one of them in 2! I know its not much of a comparison, but HMC was what 7’6" and Fedor was able to close the gap very quickly. I’m not saying HMC is anywhere near the level of Tim, but Fedor’s good. And he does what he does best VERY well.

by Big Jake on May 22, 2008 4:37 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

This is a make or break fight. If Tim wins he gains back alot of respect, and all that were doubting Fedor because of his lack of competitive opponents recently will be proved right. If Fedor wins it cements him as the best heavyweight in the world, lets just see if the Randy fight ever happens.

by Jesse on May 22, 2008 4:41 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I hope fedor breaks tim tims arm in two. The only thing timmy has going for him is his size.

by GSP SUCKA on May 22, 2008 4:45 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i’m not saying Tim has a weak chin but all it takes is 1 solid shot to immobilize him. Everytime he gets rocked, his energy goes down drasticly. Fedor is quick on his feet like a cat and his standup is overshadowed by his patented lightning quick armbar. He’s always on his toes, constantly moving sideways looking for angles and shifts all of his body weight into his punches. Watching him fight, you could tell he’s thinking couple steps ahead usually trying to throw the other guy off balance and attacks usually when misdirecting his opponent. Tim’s only chance is to bring a sprawl and make this a boxing match like he says. Might sound funny but I think the fighter whos able to keep their BALANCE while throwing off the other guy will win. Tim should have the phys advantage since he’s bigger and more sturdy but Fedor’s the master at that.

by kama kaze on May 22, 2008 4:53 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think fedor is more aggressive and is gonna come at tim hard like randy did when he won and tim is not gonna know what hit him!

WAR FEDOR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by ryan on May 22, 2008 4:59 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Sylvia via Unam decision, he will use the same gameplan as he did against Brandon Vera. Take em, clinch them, hold them.

by "Mr. NC-17" on May 22, 2008 5:12 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

very likely he will use that strategy, yet fedor is no brandon vera by a long stretch. Fedor fights with every part of his body, cant wait for this one.

by blah on May 22, 2008 5:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

indeed he does, and Vera also broke his hand in that fight.

But knowing Tim, he is going to use his height and weight against Fedor, and he will just press him up against the ropes or cage (did it say which one it is?) and stay busy enough so a break up does not occur.

by "Mr. NC-17" on May 22, 2008 6:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

U forget they are fighting in a cage, which means no dry humping against the cage for Big Tim…Not to mention Tim would never try that against Fedor because that would just close the distance for Fedor, and by a little twist of Fedor’s hips….Tim hits the Deck…..FIGHT OVER!!!

by john on May 22, 2008 6:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

WAR TIM! Tim has to win…The drama, hate and surprise that it would cause just makes me salivate.

by Rumbler on May 22, 2008 5:13 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Tim can train all the armbar defense he wants cause sometimes Fedor will just beat you up. Remember when tim got beat up by Randy? That was nothing compared to Fedor’s GNP. For Tim to properly train for Fedor he should fight a mistreated pit bull that’s been starved after he ties a steak around his neck.

by mattchupichu on May 22, 2008 6:52 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i hope tim kicks his azz cause im tired of all these ppl that think Fedor is ironman

by jdawg on May 22, 2008 7:31 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Wow cant believe you have figured Fedor out. If only the other 30 top heavyweights who fought him realised they could have trained to defend the armbar as well!!

My prediction: Fedor by armbar. 0:30 round 1.

by Ca$z on May 22, 2008 7:58 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Armbar defense……lol Give me a break Tim you are gonna get pounded into the prelims……….

by Homeslice on May 22, 2008 8:55 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

ya know i really hated seeing tim fighting because it was always the same non fighting silvia, but in the fight against nog he did atleast seem to have more fight in him than the last few. if nothing else its a better fight than the jokes that fedor has been fighting. actually i shouldnt call them jokes, any of them could still kick my ass in about 2 seconds.

by greg on May 22, 2008 11:19 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

The dynamics of Sylvia beating Fedor just dont work out for Fedor. If Fedor loses, he will fall heavily from being considered one of the best fighters in the world, and become more subject to talks with a prime MMA organization that can provide enough fighters for Fedor to redeem himself (which, for right now… outside of Mir and possibly Arlovski doesn’t include the UFC.) If this fight does show Sylvia as the winner, Fedor is gonna have a very VERY long road ahead of him.

by Luppers on May 23, 2008 12:29 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Fedor comes out swinging after a few jabs….LARGE…mark my words…GNP or RNC….game over

by surly on May 23, 2008 2:41 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Focus on your arm tim! Fedor will capitalize your big face and buy a new face after the fight!

by Maam on May 30, 2008 3:06 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Fedor is Ironman. Theres a reason he was ranked the #1 mma fighter of all time. His only loss was because of an illegal elbow….Fedor wouldve been awarded the no contest but because it was a tournament style and doctors said his cut from the illegal elbow was too bad to continue he had to take the loss. Basically the man has never been beaten nor will Sylvia give him his first real loss. Fedor will murder Sylvia by armbar, kimura, choke, KO, TKO, or doctor stoppage…basically however Fedor wants this fight to end is how it will end

by da wop on Jun 4, 2008 3:30 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Tim keeps on saying he has the best chances of winning fedor and the only thing that he has in defense is his 6ft 8in on fedor. Has he not see all the tall guys that fedor has dominated and taken down and beaten down. If Tim wants to win, he’s gonna have to be better than fedor on the ground and standing. From my point of view, the only chance that Tim has is while standing, once it hits the ground, if fedor on the ground he will submit Tim with a arm bar and if Fedor is on top the referee will have to stop the fight for a TKO. Good luck Tim.
