Captain America to invade Canada: Xtreme Couture set to open gym in Toronto
Xtreme Couture -- the mixed martial arts (MMA) training facilities that are affiliated with none other than Randy Couture -- is breaking ground in Canada with the opening of a 33,000 sq. ft. facility in Toronto’s west end.
The grand opening is scheduled for May 31.
The state of the art facility is loaded with a 14,000 sq. ft. health club along with a 19, 000 sq. ft. MMA training facility that comes complete with an Octagon and ring. The instructors who are on the roster so far include accomplished fighters such as Mark Bocek, Chris Horodecki and Mark Hominick.
The club will open with a bang as Randy Couture will be on hand on the Saturday for an autograph signing and meet and greet with the fans during the grand opening party. The following day, Randy will host a two-hour seminar from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m.
With the explosion of MMA in Canada, Xtreme Couture is seemingly leading the way with this new facility.
Space is limited for the seminar and the gym will be offering promotional membership fees during the grand opening. For more information please click here.

How many Xtreme Corture gyms are there right now? Will this be the second gym?

“Official Xtreme Couture MMA Training Centers are now being opened with qualified owners nationwide. There are currently locations in Wellington, FL, Lombard, IL, Independence, MO, and Centereach, NY with another opening in late May in Toronto, ON, Canada.
Randy and fellow fighting legend Bas Rutten co-own yet another MMA training center called Legends MMA which is located in Hollywood, California."
Here’s another snip from the press release to answer your question Macho…
Cheers.

Randy is paving the way with a smart business model for the superstars of MMA. I used to work out at John Hacklemans “Pit” here in California. John’s stratagy is to charge other MMA gyms across the country money to afiiliate with him and the “Pit” name. He charges an annual fee as well as requiring expensive recertification classes for those affiliates on a quarterly basis. This way he’s not running around spenind hundreds of thousands of dollars opening up new gyms. It’s all about the name and brand. Everyone wants to work out at the World Famous “fill in the blank”.

It’s good business, for sure. What I worry about is students overpaying to be in over-crowded classes. I’m sure the instructors are well-qualified, but they only have two eyes.

I’m surprised that Sam Stout hasn’t been named an instructor.

I was at a bar a few weeks ago in Toronto and a fight broke out nearby… I actually watched the guy try to take the guy down and resort to a ground and pound. While the other guy tried to sprawl, (and then sweep as he was unsuccessful) etc. It looked like a couple of clowns trying to imitate what they watch on TUF. Everyone was just plain laughing at them.
Now with Couture’s gym coming here, this is going to happen every other night around this city.

All bar fights should be fist fights, I don’t think you will get a lot of “street cred” if you try to put a guy in a triangle choke.

I’d give someone ALOT of cred if they can slap on a triangle choke in a street fight. Too many monkeys out there swinging for the fences, it would be nice to see someone execute a nice armbar or triangle.

I was joking dude, imagin how that would look to the other people at the bar that have never watched mma when you trap the guys neck between your thighs and pull down on the back of his head?

haha…although if it were me, I would probably give a try to Silva’s Muay Thai clinch. If I recall it seems to be really effective ;)

I’m only about 20 minutes away myself.

If Couture’s place is that close, I’d advise you to move before your property value drops.

Miami gets Nog and the Spida and Toronto gets Bas & Couture – both places must be loving it!
This sport is about to explode!

I believe Bas is only a partner in Legends…

toronto doesn’t get Bas and Couture. We just get the Couture name. We get Bocek, Hominick, and Horodecki.

There will actually be a bunch of high profile fighters coming in to do seminars on a fairly regular basis.

Randy is really doing good for himself. Extreme Couture will eventually be like 24 Hour Fitness, there will be one in just about every big city.

it gives people a lot more direction too. like there’s so many wanna be martial art schools. at least this way, people don’t have to worry about deciding between crackhead boxing school or flammer jay’s bbj. i think it’s good for the sport. i see it like skateboarding lol in like 10 years there’s gonna be a bunch of 12 year olds with an insane amount of skill.
by shinbob on May 20, 2008 8:09 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
i joined up a couple of weeks ago – $99/mth. I’m a beginner in bjj, hopefully i wont get schooled too much there. I’ve submitted a blue belt a couple of times, but i’ve been submitted much more, lol.
Anyone else goin to the grand opening?

That’s a very good price. The only thing I worry about franchise gyms particularly MMA gyms – too large might not mean you get the attention as other clubs/schools because the student instructor/ratio is way off i.e. 50 students to 1 instructor. Having said that then how can you focus on improving technical skills. Also, granted they may have some named instructors that have fought in UFC, IFL etc but that doesn’t necessarily equate to good fighter = good instructor. Things you need to worry about. I don’t doubt they do have the best facility to date in terms of the resources available to you – fitness facility, ring etc. But if you intend to improve your skills with a high student to instructor then it may take much longer than with a ratio of 20 to 1. Also, I’m sure the price will significantly increase to possibly $150/month for 1 year. Now who could really afford that – students (I don’t think so), you look at the target audience of MMA and they are generally 20 – 35 years old. So while this may good ($99) for the start I’m sure they will feel it in the pocket book later and are forced not to continue due to financial reasons. I think this would definitely work for those who can swallow that monthly bill along with those who have medium to strong technical skills as a foundation. But for the beginner , they may not benefit as much.

yo i’d pay that. how’s it work tho, like is it 99 for 1 discipline, or like so many times a week?
