Kimbo Slice to present at Country Music Awards (Video update)

That's not a typo.
Apparently Elite XC heavyweight Kevin "Kimbo Slice" Ferguson doesn't have enough fans, and he's looking to add more from another genre tonight as he makes an appearance as a presenter at the 43rd annual Academy of Country Music Awards (CMAs), according to SportsIlustrated.com.
The awards show will air tonight (Sunday) at 8 p.m. ET and run through 11 p.m. ET.
I'm not one to stereotype people, but I would have never pinned Kimbo for a country music fan. I wonder if he'll be fully equipped with an oversized belt buckle, cowboy boots and a 10 gallon hat.
That's doubtful ... this appearance more than likely has more to do with both the awards show and Elite XC's next event being on CBS on May 31.
I wouldn't normally have any interest at all in the CMAs, but Kimbo certainly adds a little bit of appeal. This could actually be worth a watch ... for a few seconds.
The show will be hosted for the 10th time by country music superstar Reba McEntire. Other stars expected to be performing are Trace Adkins, Brooks & Dunn, Montgomery Gentry and Miranda Lambert.
There's no word on whether or not the aesthetic Elite XC dance troupe will join him on stage.
Update: Check out the video after the jump.

Not As Much As People Saying He Is.

Hey guys, this is a HUGELY off topic question. But why when I go out to a bar are guys wearing their sunglasses on top of their heads when it’s midnight (ie. dark outside)? Is this the next stupid fashion statement that I’m happy I don’t get? For f*ck’s sake, didn’t Corey Hart sing a song about that? Someone please clue me in!

I want to see Kimbo next to Carrie Underwood and then all the rednecks in the audience weeping when the republican ads that paint the “big black man and innocent white lady” theme comes to their minds.

Not sure, but I think he’s making a reference to that magazine that had Lebron and that ‘supermodel’ Gizelle on the cover. It caused controversy for the mentally challenged.

How does this even happen? Did they dial the wrong number and got Kimbo?

If he knocks out Tim McGraw, Rascal Flatts and Big & Rich I’ll take back every negative thing I’ve ever said about him.

Next up he’s going to be a judge on American Idol, but instead of critiquing, he’s going to punch the worst singer in the face as hard as he can. At the end he’s going to square off against Simon and they’re going to use those huge novelty boxing gloves and giant foam cowboy hats.
Then he should get into the National Tupperware conference circuit. This is reminding me of when Harley Davidson got into cake decorating.

Kimbo Slice has had 2 MMA fights and EliteXC is banking on him to be their posterboy. What a joke.
by Muscle Dolphin on May 18, 2008 8:20 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I can not figure this out when they got actual star/talent power with Jake Shields, Gilbert Melendez, Hell even KJ Noons or Robbie Lawler. I realize that Kimbo is the link between the internet and MMA but anyone who know anything about fighting should have watched the Kimbo vs. Sean Gannon match. His first real fighter with any kind of cardio and mma skill and he looses. Sean Gannon is not even that good. What is going to happen when he fights a legit opponent. I realize that you have to season a new fighter but he is unproven. Iwish we could see the battle of the New Jacks…Kimbo Slice vs. Brock Lesnar. I would love nothing more then to see Brock double leg Kimbo through the canvas….

I have to say I don’t gewt all the Kimbo hate either. Nobody that knows anything is saying he is a top 10 heavyweight or anything but to go back and bring up his fight with Gannon is just ridiculous. Does training 8-10 hours a day with Bas mean anything? Did you ever think that maybe he is a lot better fighter than he was then? The guy is helping to strike up interest in the sport. Who gives a $hit that he is receiving hype he probably doesn’t deserve. Eventually he will be fighting better heavies and if he gets his a$$ stomped, so be it. You’ll be able to go back and say “I told ya so”. But maybe, just maybe he has developed some ground skills to go along with undeniable punching power and could be an exciting addition to the heavyweight division. Sounds like we have a bunch of Dana White’s here.

The kind of interest that comes from a dimwit promoter saying ’you’ve seen on him beating the crap out of knuckleheads in back yards and parking lots, now see him in a cage,’ is the kind of interest that MMA does not need.
by PW on May 19, 2008 9:32 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
That was more or less what I was going for. I just stated it wrong. I do believe training with Bas means a lot. Does MMA need a common street thug being a poster boy when it has legitimate stars, who have dedicated their whole lives to the sport? That is why I made mention of Melendez, Shields, and Lawler being poster boys.
The reason I made mention of the Gannon fight was to basicaly take a little of his street cred away, not his mma cred. If you ever watch his street fights, the slobs that he beats, who throw three punches and can’t breath-then he calls himself king of the streets. Rich Gannon came in and exposed the joker behind the king of the streets. That is what was meant. Do I think kimbo is a better fighter. Of course, that goes without saying, anyone that keeps up with the sport can figure that out. Training with Bas Rutten would make my grandmother a better fighter then she was.

I completely agree PW.
He is your stereotypical ‘cage fighter’ in the eyes of people who don’t know the sport. He will not bring new fans in, he will simply be ammo for the anti mma brigade with their human cock-fighting lines.
For every well spoken interview with Randy or Matt Hughes there will be a hundred images of Kimbo pretending to shoot the crowd or showing off his gold teeth.
Kimbo is bad for MMA.

Whats this guys problem. Is he dying for attention? We know hes not a fan of country music.
by bassy on May 18, 2008 8:30 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
It’s not like Kimbo begged to do this. If they called and offered any one of us a huge chunk of change to announce we’d be all over it. Honestly, did anyone expect him to say," No, a lot of hardcore fans don’t like me so I going to have to turn this down. Thanks but no thanks." ??? Hate him or love him, he doesn’t care. He’ll laugh all the way to the bank.

Matt Hughes would have been better for this

EliteXC is going under and Kimbo’s there only hope. From what I read EliteXC doesn’t have the money to last the year.

ooops i mean ufc fans, as you have no disclaimer about elite xc pride or affliction or dream, HATe on kimbo
most people on this site like Bj penn mucho or respect him at least for gettn in a cagre and fighting. If you all saw kimbo you’d know that he likees country music thats why he wore that wierd country shirt when they brought him out previously to talk up the cbs thang.
BJ stated against Sean sherk , against DANA white and against the ufc nnut huggerz, that he bj penn liked and respected KIMBO SLICe, because BJ TOO came from a street fighting background!!!
did you all hear dat?? penn came froma street fighting background if ya didn’y know
so why not hate on bj??
Kimbo is humble has not talked trash and let the man fight for a living.
YOU ALL MAKE ME sick

I think a lot of people are sick of hearing about Kimbo Slice when he’s only really fought chumps. Put him in with Frank Mir or even Vera and he’ll get submitted in no time. Not to say Kimbo could fight one day, but right now it’s just hype! Proven by the You Tube MMA organization – Kimbo got a beat down by that unknown MMA dude, both gassed after 40+ haymakers. Funny Kimbo fight!
Did you type that blog with your nose?

Your just off base man… yea there are alot of kimbo haters but there is always haters for somone like kimbo, the guy is being marketed like hes the baddest man on the planet and he hasnt fought a single tough guy yet… and as for the whole bj penn started as a street fighter, maybee he did but he wasnt makin money from it and he didnt put them up on youtube… and bj has proven to be a top tier fighter… everyone is just hating couse he hasnt proven himself yet… let the man fight, big foot silva or how about put kimbo in one of the dream events so he could fight guys like cro cop … thats what people want to see

kimbo like Brock will be a complete bust, the min he fights anybody in the top 15.
by Robert on May 19, 2008 8:56 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I think your wrong, most guys that have been dominant have come from a wrestling backround. What good is it that Kimbo can punch if the wrestler takes him down. Lesnar will be a beast.
by JV on May 19, 2008 9:37 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
True but they all started in their 20’s not 30’s… It’s really hard to learn the bio mechanics(punching/kicking) of a new sport later on in life. Randy is the exception. But u could be right. I appreciate your comment
by Robert on May 19, 2008 10:01 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
For Lesnar its pure strength, he doesn’t need to have quite the skill alot like Sylvia really doesn’t have the skill just the size and it goes along way
by Bic on May 19, 2008 2:26 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
He’s going to be a beast in Elite XC because they don’t have anybody who can beat him, save Antonio Big Foot Silva, and they’re not going to pit the two of them against each other. They’re going to stay undefeated forever.
