Shane Carwin: UFC heavyweight future?

Props: Yahoo!Sports.com
Quoteworthy:
"Wrestling is his strength, but his overall ground game is very good. He’s super, super dangerous on the ground compared to other fighters of his experience level. But I’m going to be honest with you, his ground and pound is second to none. I’ve never seen anyone with his stopping power on the ground, and that’s comparing him to the best out there. I’ve seen him hit guys so hard, he’ll knock them unconscious. And he has power from positions you just can’t imagine."
That's the scouting report on Shane Carwin from top middleweight fighter Nate Marquardt. Carwin will make his Octagon debut against Christian Wellisch at UFC 84: "Ill Will" at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, next Saturday on May 24. In eight professional bouts he's never fought longer than 131 seconds and has, collectively, spent just seven minutes and 20 seconds to finish all of his opponents. That's average of 55 seconds per fight. Don't blink ... seriously.

UFC84 will be an amazing event filled with Big Match ups! However I love some of the prelims, so I hope the fights on the main card end quickly.
BJ will finish sherk in the 2nd round which should free up air time for Soko vs. Nakamura to be aired.
Hopefully Wandy gets the 1st round KO, to free up time to see War Machine fight.
and if Thiago Silva can get a quick KO, we may even get to see this massive HW fight!
Persoanlly I have never seen Carwin fight, but I have been hearing great things about him for a while now. The UFC badly needs for HW’s to step up, hopefully he can become one of them!

carwin and cain valazquez are probably. the future of the hw div in the ufc. along w/ brock. brock is probably farther out at becoming a contnder than these 2 in reality. cain trains w att and guys like fitch and koscheck rave about this dude. were just gonna have to wait and see. its like the ufc is rebuilding the whole ufc div, much like a failing pro-sports team would do. this next year will be a rebuilding 1 for the hw div. luckily for them they still have a ton (and also the best) talent in mma below that weight class, w/the excepton of the japanase lws.(gotta love what there doing w/ their gpxs and hope they try to promote more in america. im rambling so i will shut up now.

i agree…he does sound impressive (at least judging by this short ‘scouting’ report). i hope he breaks the stereotype of the typical lay-n-pray wrestler. the last thing MMA needs is another one of those. im looking forward to seeing him fight…fingers crossed he doesnt disappoint.

I knew Shane in college he is a great competitor with great dedication to what he does. One heck of an inside linebacker and very entertaining to watch as a wrestler. I can tell you he has every desire to do well in the UFC.

Wow, sounds like Brock Lesnar, without the WWE or NFL hype. Huge guy with a good wrestling background. Anyone know where he trains? I think Marquardt trains with Greg Jackson down in NM. Its an undercard fight so hopefully Wandy will KO Jardine in 14 seconds and BJ will submit Sherk in the 1st round so we can see him…lol ;)

I like the way you think. I’ll second every aspect of that comment.

I wanna see Carwin too, but the Gouveia-Reljic fight and Silva-Mendes fights are more likely to end early. IMO anyway.

might foil plans to have lesnar get the belt though…sounds intriguing

He reminds me of a young Marc Coleman, but a bigger, stronger version at that. It will be interesting to see how he fares against some of the more experienced heavyweights (eventually). He looks to have every bit as much potential as Lesnar though, just without the big name and hype.

Just checked him out on Youtube!! He’s a big powerful unit. With the right coaching (Greg Jackson maybe?) then he will be great addition to a poor H/W division.

Another wrestler? we need fighters not wrestlers.
by Tony on May 17, 2008 3:57 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I know what ur saying, but he’s not a lay and pray type wrestler, check him out on youtube.

The guy LOOKS like a beast. Let’s hope he delivers and doesn’t give us the classic LAY-n-PRAY we’ve come to expect out of most wrestlers. There is always the exceptions though. Please be an exception.

Here’s his YouTube vid. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mAlAneaYjqU The guy is built like those big Scandinavians on World’s Strongest Man.

He looks like a brutal beast.
As long as he doesn’t gas out like most HWs
and he and Lesnar get on winning streaks
I’d like to see them fight on the upper main card someday.
UFC lacks many of the great HWs and I doubt
they’ll be back there anytime soon.

Carwin’s last 8 opponents according to Sherdog. Like Carwin, I’ve never heard of these guys either. He’s 6’4" and 265lbs. Heard of him or not, that’s a big guy who seemingly has a well-rounded game with a history of submissions and KO’s. To mad_drummer’s point – let’s see him against an elite fighter to see what he’s really made of. I do know, however, that he’d beat the piss out of me. LOL.
Sherman Pendergarst TKO
Rex Richards Submission (Guillotine Choke)
Rick Slaton KO
Chris Guillen Submission
Justice Smith TKO
Jay McCown Submission
Casey Jackson Submission (Guillotine Choke)
Carlton Jones Submission (Strikes)

Sherman P. had one fight in the UFC, lost to Antoni Hardonk by TKO due to leg kicks. Very unusual. And Justice Smith is currently portraying Justice on American Gladiators. Unless it happens to be a different very large human with the same name.

I’m really looking forward to seeing if this guy is as good as people are making him out to be. i’d be interested to see him vs Brock lesnar. I’m still not sure why Marc Coleman agrred to have his comeback fight against lesnar. I’d like to see what the odds are gonna be on that one.

As all these other promotions “pop up” to ride the UFC’s coattails for the short term it’s nice to see that the UFC is looking to the future (unlike Affliction and EliteXC). Furthermore, it’s great to see the UFC get behind intelligent fighters (e.g. Chuck – accounting degree, Carwin – engineering degree, Franklin – Master’s degree in education, Wellisch – law degree, Huerta ….. etc. Prediction: in eighteen months EliteXC and Affliction will be nowhere to be found.

The guy looks more like a bodybuilder than a fighter to be honest. Would be great to see him in the mix with Nog and Lesnar and company.
by dave on May 17, 2008 1:12 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Is it possible that this guy has been on the juice and was never caught due to the fact that those smaller shows don’t have the bank roll to test their fighters for steroids? He sure does look a little juicy to me.

“I’ve never seen anyone with his stopping power on the ground, and thats comparing him to the best out there. I’ve seen him hit guys so hard, he’ll knock them unconscious.”
Got to be the dumbest comment I’ve ever read, he’s never seen anyone knocked out before?
by Knowitall on May 17, 2008 3:01 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I would love to see him fight Lesnar. Two huge wrestlers with little MMA experience, but tons of potential. The UFC will probably try and build up both of their names before doing that fight.

Wow!!! real smart and knowledgeable comment, makes you look like an mma professor.

that was an odd statement by nate. i dont know if i would challenge nates mma knowledge, but it souunds like he is just trying a little too hard to hype up his buddy too much.

sorry about posting that 2 times didn’t see the first one. I’m not challenging Nates knowledge just saying thats a dumb comment, we’ve seen folks knocked out by the likes of Tank.

I just want to see Shane Carwin might be the future of the UFC heavyweight, but Wellisch is completely no joke what so ever. Wellisch is actually one of my favorite fights, because he always brings exciting fights, and is well rounded everywhere. I look for this fight to be a 3 round war.

yea noway that this guy has stopping power on the ground he’s HUGE.. and yes howie i agree, i think this guy has been juicing.. i hope we’ll see someone 1 punch ko this guy!
by RoB on May 17, 2008 11:48 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Well his stopping power is second to none, he gets you in full mount and you are done. Juicing? Who knows. But he trained VERY HARD to become a NFL player(middle linebacker) he was a 3 time all american wrestler and also 2 time all american football player(D2). Sports analyst said he was a modern day Dick Butkus. He trained with Alen Faneca for the combine(those who dont know he is a top 5 lineman in the NFL). Quick, athletic, strong… these are all great assets to be a great Heavyweight in the UFC. Nate did say he was the fastest to receive his purple belt in ju jitsu that he has every trained. That must say somethin…

I know this guy and his camp. he is for real. And a freak of nature yes ! Juicer no. I have never seen anyone with his natural ability. I have seen him fight. i think all will see he is the real thing. I am from CO. so have been lucky enough to know a little more about him since my kid fought some of the same shows
