I thought Bass rutten was going full speed while Kimbo was lagging behind!

Personally, I am sick of people ripping Kimbo because he is marketable….EliteXC has no depth at heavyweight, so they have to ffed him a few cans…Why give him a top opponent when he is just a novice? Look what happened to Brock…. Its not like Kimbo slice is headlining pay per view events….He is headlining a free CBS card, and Showtime events which are basically free./…so what the hell is there to complain about?
Its not as bad as what the UFC did with Brock Lesner, having him co-main event the Superbowl card (charghing us $45) was a joke. Kimbo will work his way up, and I guarentee that we will eventually see him fighting in the octagon! Every opponent he has faced has been better then his last and his next opponent “THe Mega-punk” will be a good test for him.
I really hope that he gets some ground work in his fight against Thompson, or at least show off what kind of sprawl ability he has.
Kimbo is a real fighter, who is agressive and has a great Jaw, people need to stop hating! Its not his fault he instantly has gained millions of fans!
In my best Jamie Kennedy voice….“Don’t be hatin” lol….

john i agree. i think mostly its hardcore fans who are worried that kimbo will be the 1rst guy casual fans see and think this is what mma is all about. some will, but there are other good fights before likesmith/lawler (wich will probably a slugfest as well) and people should just stop worring about it. IT IS WHAT IT IS. a free fight card that will help mma more than hurt it by giving it its biggest exposure yet. i dont like kimbo as a fighter, but i certainly dont hate him for his success. he was getting paid like a grand a fight for those street fights and now is making hundreds of thousands? who can blame him. he always seems like a decent guy in all his interviews and talks about his relegion alot. i cant believe that there are people are saying they wont watch this because of kimbo. if 2 big guys got into a fight in the street, would they not stop and watch it? hell yes. kimbo and james both probably have a little more skills than they show, training with bas and extreme couture, but there not getting paid to wrestle. when these 2 fight i w3anna see them go all out, tryinf to tear each others heads off, like don frye/takayama did. i dont ever hear anyone complaining about that fight! i am most interested in lawler smith. i see alot of guys who seemed washed up in the ufc switch orgs and string together a couple of wins and all of a sudden their in everyones top ten in their weight class(lawler, trigg, etc.) smith wasnt and isnt a top 10 fighter in the ufc’s mw division, one of its weakest divisions’ (not true), but smith is a gamer and i wanna see if lawler is that much improved. any way like i said people shouldnt worry about this and should just enjoy it.

Couldn’t agree more. I’m sure training with Bas is paying off. Speaking of which, when they were shadow boxing at the start, I noticed Bas threw a punch after every knee, Kimbo didn’t. lol

One thing I love about Kimbo is his toughness and will to fight! Those are skills that can not be taught! Could u imagine how good Jason “the talented fairy” McDonald would be if he had some of Kimbo’s toughness and heart?
He is a real fighter and that can not be taught! He is working on evolving as a mixed martial artist, and once his training catches up with his real Fighter m,entality, he will be a solid heavyweight (who could probably cut down to LHW)
Could you imagin a Bang between Houston Alexander vs. Kimbo at LHW in the UFC? That sh*t would be crazy!
Let Kimbo m,ake his bones in eliteXC, because once this contract expires I am sure the UFC will try and sign him

Honestly I would rather see a novice street fighter in mma (kimbo) then a novice dry humping wrestler like Brock Lesner!
by john on May 13, 2008 11:53 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
John,
You have to admit Lesnar was throwing some punches in the Mir fight. He just was not prepared to defend any of Mir’s submissions. He wasn’t all lay-and-pray. He pushed the pace.
by Jeff on May 13, 2008 12:09 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Jeff: Not knocking Brock for his last fight against Mir…he came to fight, I am just speaking generally.
I would rather see a novice stand up guy competing then a novice wrestler….Only striker I have ever seen consistently dry hump was Tim Sylvia….Basically what I am trying to say is that Generally you see more stalling and dry humping out of wrestlers then strikers!
by John on May 13, 2008 12:36 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Agreed. Hence, the reason I hated paying for Timmy fights. I have actually fallen asleep watching him. I was impressed with Brock. I anticipated a circus act, but was pleasantly suprised to see him engage and not spend time dry humping. Granted he has a lot to learn.

I dont think anybodys standup game poses a threat to kimbo the dude would let people take free shots to his head with bare knuckles. I think thompson is gonna fake a punch and go for the takedown, its gonna be hes only chance…
by jizzo on May 12, 2008 11:32 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
No, he’s gonna fake a dive when Kimbo swings at him and start tapping before he hits the mat. And for this he will cash a very large under-the-table check from Gary Shaw. Kimbo is worth millions to Shaw as long as he keeps knocking out useless bums.

No…Thompson will run towards him at full speed throwing wild punches and get sparked on the way in….Kimbo 1st round KO
This initial rush will cause Thompson to gas, then Kimbo will throw down the bombs!

Me too. I think Thompson is a step up in competition for Kimbo so hopefully it will last more than a couple minutes.
Maybe next year we’ll see Kimbo fight someone with a decent record. I think it’s great that they’re grooming him now. He’s got loads of potential and seems like a nice guy so I hope he does well in the sport.

Thompson is 2-6 in his last 8 fights with 5 of those 6 losses by KO. He’s going to run straight at Kimbo chin first and be immortalized on Kimbo’s KO highlight reel. His reward will be a large check from Shaw, who probably had a conversation with Thompson that was very similar to the one Marcellus Wallace had with Butch in Pulp Fiction. “In the fifth your ass goes down. You’re going to feel a little sting. That’s pride fuckin’ wit’cha.” Except this one doesn’t go more than a minute or two.

I agree SD, i don’t know that he’ll be world champion, but his stand up is so fluid. Give the guy a break until we see what he’s capable of. I think he should be taking these lower rung fights so that we all know where he stands. You gotta walk before you can run boys.
by Rilly on May 13, 2008 3:21 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’ll give the guy a break when he fights someone credible instead of company-fed CANS.
Who has he truly been tested against to say his stand up is so skilled????
A BJJ artist would take him out in the first round.
He’s a joke and an embarrassment to the sport. He’s like a bad character from Professional Wrestling. He plays up to the stereotypes that people like John McCain talk about with MMA. Once he starts acting like a mixed martial artist and not a ghetto street thug, maybe I’ll take him serious.
by Cool Hand Chad on May 13, 2008 8:25 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
A Joke and an Embaressment is a bit OTT!!! He is not the cream of the crop but we all knew that. FFS everyone give the guy a break. At least he has Charisma and a personality.
I agree I don’t like the Idea of a street brawler being one of the most recognised faces in MMA, but like has been said on here a thousand times before. It is not Kimbo’s fault he is getting the star treatment!
F*** It….I’m new KIMBO FAN!!!!

It is my contention that the dislike for Kimbo has an underlying racial component that most won’t admit to.
by Howie on May 13, 2008 12:46 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I agree.
The only reason why we don’t see it here is because most people “sign” their name next to the message. So there is an online mmamania reputation of sorts. Oh, by the way, people have written explicitly racist rants about Kimbo on mma blogs but they get deleted… I guess because sometimes they disappear afterward.
Like any other Kimbo thread, people on here want him to fight top 10 contenders (with a 2-0 record) or claim they won’t watch him at all… which is a very spiteful thing to do considering he’s going to headline the first network broadcast of an mma on prime time.
The only logical deduction I can come up with is that there are racial undertones to the hate of Kimbo.
by rhv on May 13, 2008 12:59 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
wow… I didn’t get that, what I got was that people really didn’t believe that he is a good fighter.. of course his BJ game sucks, he would get taken down and GnP by a wrestler or BJ fighter would submit him.
I don’t think guys like Chuck Liddell and fan purist are judging Kimbo by anything other than him not fighting quality opponents and at the same time aquiring lots of $$$, fan base, so early in his career for such few low level fights etc… no fighter has gotten this level of attention this quickly and so undeservedly.
HOWEVER, I’ve enjoyed watching him on YouTube, I also like Felony fights, what can I say? I would never pay to watch one of his fights or a felony fight video (lol). I’m glad Kimbo has been successful, he’s a (1 in a million) oddity right now, hope he fights a notch up eachtime and actually becomes a good MMA Fighter.
by THORAZINE on May 13, 2008 2:05 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Well said Thorazine, i respect your posts. Kimbo is an entertainer but he can also throw a serious punch. I believe he is made of the right mental stuff to take his skills a long way. He will eventually fight better opponents but as i said in an earlier post, you gotta crawl before you can walk and you’ve gotta walk before you can run. If you train full time i’m sure your BJ and wrestling skills can improve extremely quickly, especially with an understanding of weight and balance that is critical in any fighting pursuit. Kimbo has this understanding. With so little talent in any heavy weight divison of any promotion, he might also be the fans great black hope???

PW,
Great article thank you for the link.
by Jeff on May 13, 2008 10:59 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Thorazine, I agree with everything you say. We all know he’s not a great fighter. Anybody with a pro record of 2-0 is not likely going to be a great mma fighter. Of course he would get taken down by a quality wrestler and out jiujitsu’d by even a decent bjj guy.
And you’re also right about guys like Chuck judging him. But they’re fighters. For fighters, the reason is clear why they don’t like him.
I should have clarified about exactly I was talking about. I was referring to some fans that do nothing but criticize a beginning mma fighter. As I said, there have been racist comments on here aimed at Kimbo and that’s a fact because I saw them. They weren’t on there long. (Actually, I can’t recall whether it was mmamania or another mma blog).

do the same people who dislike Kimbo so much, also hate Anderson Silva? i am pretty sure its just because Kimbo is the exact thing mma was trying to say they were not!
you look at how Anderson Silva acts in the ring and before and after his fights, then look at Kimbo. its not hard to see the difference

The biggest part being in the ring. The skill level is not even remotely close.
by naturalshadow on May 13, 2008 3:48 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Valentino, you’re right about kimbo can’t be compared to a. silva inside the ring, but outside the ring he seems like a stand up guy. I don’t think this has anything to do with race at all, I think this has to do with many ppl thinking of kimbo as being from the ghetto. as if he doesn’t have any class to lead EXC. ppl should just give him a break, he’s been acting really nice and all those ppl saying that he’s bad for the sport just because he was an underground fighter should just find something else to hate on. Kimbo had to make a living, and that’s what he found to make a quick buck. everybody got to start somewhere. another thing, ppl saying that he shouldn’t get paid as he does, if he’s bringing in big crowds to watch him fight would it be fair to give him 5k for his efforts? I have no problem with the money he’s getting, I have no problem with the competition he’s getting (because no other way you see it he’s still new to the sport), I have no problem with the way he carries himself (he really seem like a nice guy), I ain’t got no problem with kimbo. I can’t see why all the hate is going on, the guy is just trying to make a living and it’s not his fault he has a big audience of his own.
by linx on May 13, 2008 8:00 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Are you serious? Because he’s black? You must have lost your mind, or don’t know who any UFC fighters are. People love Rampage, he’s black. Anderson Silva is black and Brazilian. Soko, the African Assassin himself, and Din Thomas, he’s black, highly respected. I don’t think it has anything to do with people being racist. Just haters, hating, as usual.
by Toms Bombs on May 13, 2008 11:08 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’m not black. I have a vested interest in this in one way or another.
But we all know the concept of racism is much more complex than simply hating every single black person on earth.
All I’m saying is that a portion of fans hating Kimbo let his skin color influence their decision (consciously or otherwise).

It really sucks to hear a vast amount of people disliking kimbo stating that he’s only fighting Can’s. Come on, its his second career fight! James Thompson at a time, was a legit contender in the heavyweights, so I don’t think you should be counting him out. I Know he’s lost a few, but that doesn’t mean he can’t improve and regain his spot in the heavyweights. However, I disagree with kimbo getting primetime spotlight, because it is his second fight. However, that being said, James Thompson, can be considered a step up in competition. But, how much of a step up we will have to see on the upcoming event.

1) The video was garbage!
2) This isnt racial…its a skill thing. He’s worthless against real fighters. He is to old to be taking it soooo slow with this guy. Shit by the time they have him GROOMED his ass will be on social security.
3) Will someone please tell Kimbo that your not tough by KO nobodies.

However, at the end of the day he is getting in th cage and having a go! So I say good on him, under Rutten he is only going to get better.

by Robert on May 13, 2008 8:12 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I think that Kimbo would definately have a harder jaw than Houston. Especially after being toughened up by those bare knuckles bagging against it. The guy may not have any of the technical skills of true MMA fighter. But he does have pretty good stand up and movement especially for his size which is improving all the time. I don’t see why people are making so much fuss over or noise just because he is popular. Chuck should really even be wasting his time on him but he is obviuosly jealous of attention Kimbo is getting. He really does need to concentrate on his own career and not Kimbo’s. He knows and we know that he is a lot more skillful and technical when it comes to MMA than Kimbo, but If it came to the two of them trading punches in the Octagan like he did with Wandy, I think Kimbo would take his head off. And no I do not think he is a better fighter than Chuck, but I think if it was just stand up and Chuck didn’t go for those pussy takedowns like he did with Wandy, then I definately think Kimbo could knock him out. And no I am not a Kimbo fan, just telling it how I see it. If he connects he could knock anyone out.

I don’t think people hate him b/c of race. I think people hate him b/c of how quickly he’s become successful. And by success I mean money and fame. He hasn’t done jack in the ring, you wonder how a guy with only 2 fights gets so much hate. I think it’s laughable people get so worked up over him. Why don’t I just go to Sherdog and pick some random guy with 2 fights, then start spewing about how many holes he has in his game. Think about it, that’s ridiculous. I don’t get how he’s bad for the sport. Was Arturo Gatti good or bad for boxing? It’s not like after a fight, he’s saying “This MMA shit is easy, I don’t even need to train”. Kimbo grew up in a bad environment and made it out. If anything, that should be applauded. It’s easy to overlook that if you grew up in suburban middle America.

I agree 100% with John, one of the only comments that makes complete sense. you have to many kids that want-to-be UFC fighters here, and gets upset because kimbo knocks out his challenger’s with a few hits.. If you have a challenge then challenge him.. Like he said, he’ll challenge anyone at anytime and any place. Chuck wouldn’t challenge him on the street, but the UFC has rules and the rules would save his life.
