BJ Penn: 'You cant confuse steroids with heart,' Sean Sherk

Props: HardcoreSportsRadio.com
Quoteworthy:
"... I know there are a lot of people out there doing steroids, cheating and every time I run into one of them, I'm going to call them on it and then I'm going to beat the shit out of them.… It's going to be a historic night because all the kids out there will realize that you can do it with just hard work alone … he wants to say he has heart and all this different shit, but you can't confuse steroids with heart.... It's two different things, a guy with heart is a guy doing it with blood, sweat and tears, waking up with the sore back, the sore body.… What would happen in the old days when you get caught with a couple of aces up your sleeve, they kill the guy right there and that's why I say Sean Sherk is dead…."
A fired up UFC Lightweight Champion, BJ Penn, talks about his upcoming title defense against Sean Sherk at UFC 84: "Ill Will" at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada, on May 24. "The Muscle Shark" tested positive for steroids after his win against Hermes Franca at UFC 73: "Stacked" in July 2007 and has not competed since because of a six-month suspension. Penn doesn't like steroids or steroid users very much ... this one is personal.

With respect to Hughes, lets not forget that Penn got destroyed in the second fight. Say what you want about the earlier rounds and his broken rib. If he even had a broken rib, it was because Hughes broke it, right before he smashed his face about 20 times.
by naturalshadow on May 11, 2008 3:36 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Natural Shadow, BJ was destroying hughes the 2nd fight, hughes couldnt stand up with him, he couldnt even take him down. The only reason hughes won was because when BJ reversed hughes and then he tore his ribs, hughes did not have any effect on BJ’s ribs.

Dude a loss is a loss, you’ve got to accept it regardless. I know Penn could probably take Hughes in the rubber match but Penn still has a loss on his record. Now if Penn loses to Sherk, there still should be no excuses and the same goes for the opposite. A loss is a loss and at the end of the day you can only add it to experience, like don’t over exert yourself in a fight. If you injured yourself in a fight its still your problem for not knowing your own limitations, but I still would say that Penn never gave up even with broken ribs. My hats off to fighters like that. Anyway Sherk 4th by GnP.

how can any fight fans not LOVE BJ PENN. He should be in every single fans top 5! He always speaks out about everything and keeps it real. He talks trash and backs it up (unlike Tito). I dont understand how some fans can actually hate on him. He is one of the most skilled fighters on this planet and has a great personality for the sport! He is absolutely right about sherk and I cant wait to show the world that he is on another level.
“In the old days u got killed for getting cuaght with an ace up your sleeve…sean Sherk, ya dead”…Now thats a classic quote.
Tune in Monday on mmamania.com when sean sherk is sure to fire back with some lame George-bush-like, stuttering come back, that makes no sense what soever. I really cant wait till UFC 84!

You know I give Sherk the benefit of the doubt due to CSAC’s handling of the test, and the politics behind it. But calling people moron’s for believing he roided is a bit silly. He tested positive, that’s why people believe it. Right or wrong.
And I think BJ will take this. But hey anything can happen, Sherk isn’t a pushover.

I think Sherk probably didn’t intentionally cheat but you have to look at what happened.
If he had been intentionally juicing do you think he’s just going to come out with it? No. He’s going to hire a lawyer who specialises in getting other steroid users off and make a bit fuss about it all.
You have to look at the facts. The dude tested positive.

First of all Penn always speaks the truth.. He never said anything negative about Stevenson, GSP, Hughes, etc. BJ Penn is a fckn bada$$ fighter, a warrior, Icon, and showstopper. Penn has nothing to prove in this fight. It’s Sherk who has to show the critics if he’s the same fighter without the juice. All the haters on here keep dissin Penn on his cardio, but is that all that you can diss him on? There’s a difference between cocky and confident, and BJ Penn exmplifies confidence. There will be no possible way that Sherk will be able to pass Penn’s guard during the fight. Having said that, Sherk can use his good wrestling skills to try and take Penn down but I doubt it will work. Penn’s a much better striker than Sherk too.
Sincerely,

Dude BJ’s known for talking a lot of smack. he had plenty of trash to say before penn/hughes 2, he talked a lot of smack throughout TUF5, and he still thinks he beat GSP the first time and he can whoop his ass if they fight again.
BJ’s a great talent, but his mouth makes his as good a self promoter as Tito. Difference between the two of them is BJ has skills.

we havent seen him fight out of gas since october 06! he broke his rib that time too! hard to fight with a broken rib! however i dont see him lasting against sherk in the later rounds! could be an early stoppage for bj or could be a late stoppage for sherk or even a 3 rounds to two win for sherk! i say if sherk gets past the first 2 rounds its his from half way through the 3rd! bj will be loosing gas and sherk will be full of fuel!
i feel sherk was wronged by the test! many supplements contain steroids and hormones on the sly to make their customers bigger! if you ever saw lab testing on these supplements you would know some of em can contain steroids! sherk trains very hard and eats all sorts of shit just so he can win! why would he go through that if he was taking the easy route! makes no sense! i cant wait for this fight

He gassed in one fight(vs. GSP) and everyones saying he has no cardio. Don’t get me wrong, it’s a shame that Penn didn’t train up to his true ability in the past, but fighters make mistakes and then one realize what their doing wrong. Cardio will never be an issue in his upcoming fights. I can’t sit here and say that Sean Sherk is a crappy fighter, because that would make a ignorant. Sherk is an above average fighter but I honestly do not see him being able to defeat Penn. As far as your commnent on Penn’s running, go to his website and watch his training regimen. He goes through six days of gruesome and intense training and on top of that, he goes running on his off-day. To me that’s what a champion should exemplify, and BJ Penn, along with the likes of Anderson Silva, Nogueira, etc is a great champion in the sport of MMA.

I don’t think he gassed vs GSP. It had been so long since I’d watched the fight that I decided to get it off UFC on Demand. I was waiting to see where BJ gassed because everybody always talks about it.
I mean yeah, he was obviously more tired in the later rounds than the 1st but I wouldn’t have said he was gassed. I didn’t notice anything abnormal about his cardio.

I believe if he isn’t going 100% compared to fighters like GSP, Hughes, Sherk he wouldn’t compare in the later rounds. Its not like he would look like he did in the Hughes fight but he would seem slightly slower and less accurate.

I’m looking forward to an awesome fight. I gotta say though, with all this shit talk coming from PENN, he really is setting himself up to be upset. SHERK has remained relatively calm, only reacting to BJ’s trash talk.

Lets be real here, this is a time when 99% of all pro athletes are doing performance enhancing drugs of some kind, hell even baseball players. I applaud BJ if he is all natural, he is probably the only one in the UFC who is, if it is true. However, It’s no longer a game where someone will win on knowledge of a certain fighting system alone. Not only skill, but strength is now a very important factor, because everyone saw what Royce did to the early UFC fighters because of their ignorance, and because of this I think that Sherk, being the stronger of the two, may have a slight advantage. BJ is the prodigy, though, and I hope he proves me wrong!

Man! BJ is an @sshole. I’ve never liked him and I wanted to when he came back to the UFC. He should have dropped all this ludicrous Sh1t talkin. I’m no Sean Sherk fan(I don’t love him or hate him)but I really hope he runs BJ over and ground and pounds him into the canvas. That of course is just a dream of mine. Where as I hate BJ’s attitude, I totally respect him as a fighter and I do believe if he gets Sherk to the ground it’s probably over. If Sherk wins it will be by decision. And yes BJ I’d respect Sherks stamina and power or you might fall without a defense like GSP did.
Sherk passed a lie detector test, I’d give him the benefit of the doubt and train as such.
by GodannarJunkie on May 10, 2008 1:55 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
This is the main reason I give Sherk the benefit of the doubt. He PASSED a lie detector test. 99.999% of people CAN’T beat a lie detector test. I know members of intelligence (CIA) have been trained to pass, but this doesn’t happen over night and it takes a special kind of person to be able to do this. One other thing,is the fact that the commission reduced his suspension to half. It’s like they know they messed up,but they would never admit it or they would lose credibility for future tests. Bottom line is ,if Sherk juiced, we will know it in his next fight, because his performance level will be substantially less without the juice.

DUDE dont be iggnorant, show me where i can find an official word on this so called lie detector test, what web site either shows this test he took or even mentions that he took it besides Sean Sherk saying he did???? AND They reduced his sentence because of the appeals process and maybe sean made them question themselves with a tiny bit of evidence, you think they would just ruin this guys career and not addmit they were wrong . . . They could make up anything without ruining his career and ruining themselves like we accidently mixed Francas with Sherks and both dirty samples were Francas and we have fired the guy who conducted the tests and we will do much better from now on, case closed. They could make up ANYTHING! Instead they put the MMA sport in jeopardy by saying one of its champions of one of the biggest org’s does roids therefore putting their jobs in jeopardy cause with no UFC no testing to do . . .COME ON!

Jacobs, Sherks attorney used this as evidence at the hearing. What attorney would even mention ANYTHING without PROOF. This would just be dismissed as HEARSAY. Maybe it’s all made up,but like I said, we will know the TRUTH when we see Sherk. One thing about the juice that NO ONE can hide or LIE about is the FACT that you SHRINK when you stop taking it. Maybe I am biased, but I was always accused of juicing (even by my own parents).I know FOR A FACT a guy can get as big and ripped as Sherk , without the juice. I’ve been there ,done that and I didn’t even come CLOSE to the scientific diet and training Sherk does. I have a friend that is 5’7" 185 lbs, ripped (without the juice). He is way bigger than Sherk. I can’t say for sure that he didn’t juice, but he passed every piss test, including the Canadian Nationals. However, I do know for a fact that I didn’t juice,so I know it’s possible to get as big as Sherk naturally, Guys that stuggle to put on muscle, CAN’T understand that a natural mesomorph just has to look at a weight to add muscle. “There is little scientific evidence to support the reliability of polygraphs.1617 Despite claims of 90% – 95% reliability, critics charge that rather than a “test”, the method amounts to an inherently unstandardizable interrogation technique whose accuracy cannot be established. A 1997 survey of 421 psychologists estimated the test’s average accuracy at about 61%, a little better than chance.18 Critics also argue that even given high estimates of the polygraph’s accuracy a significant number of subjects (e.g. 10% given a 90% accuracy) will appear to be lying, and would unfairly suffer the consequences of “failing” the polygraph. In the 1998 Supreme Court case, United States v. Scheffer, the majority stated that "There is simply no consensus that polygraph evidence is reliable" and "Unlike other expert witnesses who testify about factual matters outside the jurors’ knowledge, such as the analysis of fingerprints, ballistics, or DNA found at a crime scene, a polygraph expert can supply the jury only with another opinion…".19 Also, in 2005 the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals stated that "polygraphy did not enjoy general acceptance from the scientific community"."
by SixT-4 on May 11, 2008 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I hear what you are saying, but a competent tester will realize the 10% that have a nervous reaction to every question and rule the test as inconclusive.I know one thing for sure. If I wanted to know if someone was lying, I’d rather hook them up to a polygraph than go with chance. There is a reason law enforcement still uses the polygraph. They KNOW the % who failed and were later found guilty by other CONCRETE evidence. You do have a point though, because it is only as accurate as the guy conducting the test.
by Gord on May 12, 2008 2:18 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs

Look up Sherks fight history. Because he drove three decisions lately he can only ride out a victory. Out of his 18 fights he went to decision three times against guys who are well known to finish fighers. Those 18 fights span back to his first loss against Hughes four years ago. Out of 18 fights he went to decision on 3, tko’d his oppenent on 3, and submitted his oppenent on 10. Of all the 32 fights 35 fights he’s had he’s only lost to the two greatest welterweights around. I think some of you fight fans need to lose your bias and educate yourselves on your favorite fighters oppenents every once in awhile. Sherk I believe will finish Penn in the 4th by GnP.

Just to add to all the Penn haters reference Penn’s lack of cardio.
1. Penn has had 18 professional fights.
2. 13 of them were wins, only 5 of the wins were in the first round.
3. His last 2 fights were won at the end or near the end of the second round.
4. Penn took GSP to a 3 round split decision.
5. Penn has a fight average of 2.5 rounds per fight.
Can’t wait until my man Penn chokes out the muscle sherk and keeps choking like he did with Pulver.

I’m a little tired of hearing this crap, “Can Sherk beat BJ if he’s not on roids?”…I don’t think all the steroids in the world will help Sherk beat BJ. BJ is a more skilled fighter. Period. As long as BJ comes in in good enough shape, he will win. If Sherk wins, steroids are not the deciding factor.

Tell me if these names mean anything to ya . . . LoL!!
Joel Blanton
Lee King
Brodie Faber
Eric Heinz
Jake Short
Mark Long
Charles Taylor
John Alexander
Jutaro Nakao
Jason Purcel
Ryuki Ueyama
Kaleo Padilla
Scott Bills
Steve Gomm
Johnnie Holland
Kurtis Hensen
Ken Parham
. . . LoL, If BJ Penn faught half the CAN’S that Sean Sherk did he would have a 30 and something record too! HA! Do you guys even recognize one name on that list!!! While BJ has like a 50% Title Fight Ratio against world champions and Sherk is 0-2 against world champions. The only time Sherk has beat Top Ten’ers was twice, and both are Karo Parisyan way back in 2001 by TKO and even farther back in 2000, and yes, by decision! Loss to Hughes, Loss to GSP, the only significant win he has is over Kenny Florian LoL! IF you get rid of all the CAN’S on his record Sean Sherk is 5-2 . . . (2overKaro) ARE YOU KIDDING ME!! Place your bets! (All info from Sherdaog.com)

All cans except for Jutaro Nakao. That guys has beaten Shinya Aoki.

Lol thats funny that you would say you do you recognize any of these fighters. I bet if you were given a list of pretty elite fighters that don’t fight for the UFC or WEC you probably wouldn’t know their names. Hell none of you heard of Silva till he came to the UFC. A bet alot of fans didn’t even know who the Last Emperor was until Randy wanted to challege him. I’m glad your atleast looking up some of the facts and all but Penn lost to many top contenders. For example GSP, Hughes, Pulver, draw to Uno, lost to Machida. Sure he has some big fights but he is like a coin flip against these big name contenders. You also only named a little over half of Sherks wins. What method did he use to win those bouts?
by Smokes on May 12, 2008 12:05 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
And Nick Diaz . . . I know I know, Shers claim to fam! I counted that in that 5-2 win column by the way. And those are barely half the CAN’S Sherks decisioned for wins LoL, like i said . . . PLACE YOUR BETS!

Sherk has got this. He never juiced and had plenty of proof that the tests were flawed. Stop hugging BJ’s nuts just because he is the better trash talker. He’s hyping himself up way to much. BJ is good but I still don’t understand why he is so overrated?
by Lord Levi on May 10, 2008 1:22 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
BJ is not overrated. BJ is an incredible fighter, I will give him that. I personally can not stand BJ Penn by the way he handles himself outside the octagon, and he is a huge fact for the UFC and the way he acts disgusts me. But yet he is one of the best pure fighters when he does not gas in the whole entire MMA world.
Sherk still will beat him. Period.

BJ Penn has struggled against bigger stronger wrestlers, who push the pace and work BJ on top.
Look at GSP and Matt Hughes, they both defeated BJ by wrestling and also wearing down BJ. BJ has not made it past the 2nd round since his return to 155.
Sherk is going to beat BJ.

It goes both ways, you’ll probably feel sorry about calling out Sherks fans when Penn loses. I’d say you will be even more sorry based on the evidence that Penn is a Prodigy who can lose.

I kick back with friends from Hilo who grew up with BJ, his brothers and Troy Melendoza cuz our kids play together. They tell me all kinds of stories about Troy playing soccer and how BJ was a little skinny kid who nobody thought twice about and how he used to cheat on tests in school and fights he got into at hotel parties or wherever. Its a trip cuz when I’m hearing all this and trying to not show that I’m going insane cuz thats 1 of my favorite UFC fighters and they refer to him in peer terms so I’m just trying to play it cool. Besides crystal meth, MMA in Hawaii is reeeeaaally blowing up now like football because little scrappy kids relate to him and see fighting as their ticket off the islands. There’s a ridiculous amount of gyms and dojos down there. Its good to see BJ take a stand on the steroids issue and stress heart in sports to set a good example for the younger generation. Everywhere you go, more than ever in hawaii, teenagers are calling each other out randomly in public bathrooms for sport basicly. lol. And luckily, theres not as much guns as there is in the mainland. I could understand if nobody gives a shi*t about this 808 report. But little has been left unsaid about BJ. WAR MFken Penn!! NOW GO REPRESENT HAWAII & MAKE ME SOME $$$!!! lol

setting an example for the younger generation?? Like sucker punching a cop then getting tackled by him outside of zanzabars? Dont make me laugh. Both fighters are bad role models in my opinion. I see this fight going into a draw. Sherk trips, knocks out, lands on bj and suffercats him with his man tits. GO MACHIDA!
by Leeward on May 12, 2008 10:04 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
leeward, the story goes: a PLAIN CLOTHED COP started funk wit BJ’s brother Regan at zanzabars then somehow BJ got involved and ended up falsing dude. After the fact, the guy then revealed that he was undercover. So there you go! another punk with a badge trying to start shet! its not like dude was wearing the uniform and regulating the scene. just another bitch instigator…. all you sherk fans: told you so! f@ck machida

BJ is going to annilate Sean “The Needle Shark” Sherk. I really like that nickname for Sean.

I can’t believe people defend a boring fighter that cheats. People killed Matt Lindlnad when he was with the ufc but at least he never cheated. Call BJ fat all you want, the fact is he was fat, at 170. Now, that he is back to 155, he has to train harder or he won’t make weight. It will be BJ by rear naked choke in round 3. Or Sherk will try to have sex with BJ for 25 minutes, one or the other.

A cornfed farm boy animal . . . The dude fights CAN’S!!! Take out all the CAN"S that Sherk has faught and his record would be 5-2!! You dont have a clue newbee, your arguements are laughable . . . BJ has faught at 205 so why would he ever be scarred of a 155er and why would he have said something in the first lace and why come back in the ring to reply to Sean, to show sportsmenship and make Sherk look lke an ass which worked pretty well seeing as how the rudest thing that occured in the ring that night was Sean Sherk cutting into and pretty much not allowing Joe Stevenson to get a post fight interview, right. He could have said what he had to say at a later time, the mic belonged to BJ and Stevenson. But yea, BJ is scarred of Sherk LoL, hes gonna fake an injury to get out of this fight, hes not gonna show up in Vegas LoL, get real dude, that 5’6 midget couldnt intimidate 85% of the UFC’s fightes especially not the one that licks his opponents blood off his gloves after he crushes them. 13 days, 13 days and there wont be anything left to say . . . Unless BJ doesnt show cause hes sooooo scarred LoLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL!!!!

CIDCYANIDE:
Your just a complete hater.
Mr. NC-17:
I know your a knowledgeable MMA fan, but you said that Stevenson was going to beat Penn at UFC 80. I know you don’t like Penn, but is your prediction of Sherk winning an emotional pick? To me, Sherk’s wrestling skills is not much greater than Joe Stevenson’s. The only thing that Sherk has over JoeDaddy is cardio. BJ Penn is the best pound for pound BJJ MMA fighter in America (second in the world to Anderson Silva). He’s a lot more well-rounded MMA wise than Sherk is, and I don’t see anyway that Sherk comes out of the fight a winner. I agree that I am a biased BJ Penn fan, BUT I give points to the things that I say. I am interested in what your answer is.

FYI , BJ’s trainer made him go back in the ring and say that.If not BJ was like “F*@K that F*@K’er leave him in the ring looking stupid”! Talk about fagging out, what did sherk do or say when BJ got in the ring?,Not a dam thing! Not even a F@#K YOU, or “Im the champ” to his face!NO, what did he do, stuck his hand out for a hand shake from a guy that just called him out! Thats what I call being a PUSSY!& by the way GSP is a IDIOT!Don’t believe the hype!

Remember how silly BJ made Hughes look on the ground in their second fight before his rib popped? Hughes is a better wrestler than Sherk. Its gonna be hard for BJ to sink in a RNC without rocking Sherk first though. I hope he shatters Sherk’s nose with a knee on the way in for a TD, and then makes him so bloody, the octagon will look like a murder scene. BJ Penn by first degree murder with 4 minutes left in the 1st round.

We loooove UH football to death BUT when UH starts losing games they should win, we f@$K’n DISOWN THEM. Atleast I do! Just like our fighters its the same thing. If BJ loses I’ll be so pissed off for making us look like fool’s!I"LL probably call him every name in the book & I really don’t know if I would watch him fight again, it would depend on the way he lost, its just how i feel,& thats why that f@#ker better win!!!!
