Chris Leben sentenced to 35 days in jail; UFC 85 fight with Michael Bisping is off (Update)
MMAmania.com just learned that middleweight fighter Chris Leben was today sentenced to 35 days in jail and will be released on May 27, 2008 (he gets credit for time already served), which would give him only 12 days until his scheduled showdown with Michael Bisping at UFC 85: "Bedlam" at the O2 Arena in London, England, on June 7.
It was apparently too close for comfort, forcing to the promotion to scrap the bout, according to WrestlingObserver.com.
No replacement for Leben is known at this time. However, "The Count" will remain on the card -- his presence as a high profile British-born UFC star is perhaps more important than any other in the field who can put butts in seats.
"The Crippler" turned himself in to the Clackamas County Sheriff's Office in Portland, Oregon, on April 30 because of an old Driving Under the Influence (DUI) probation violation. He did so to obtain a travel visa overseas, but it appears that things did not work out according to plan.
Neither Leben nor the UFC have issued statements at this time. Stay tuned for more details.

He has to call of this fight for his well being. If he goes in the cage with very little cardio and time to prepare he could get destroyed by Bisping

you want the bottom bunk ,he should pull out of the fight, doing any time in county jail is a nightmare terrible sleep, terrible food, lots of noise and lots of goofs ,he will not be prepared, even prepared ,bisbing will beat him, hell kalib"no heart" starnes beat him.

Yeah I would say he would be fine to fight, but he wont be able to get his supplements and he will have terrible nutrition in there. Bisping is wayyy too strong at 185 to go in short of 100% with him. Its too bad though. A dominant performance for either would have been a great set up to a really entertaining title fight with Silva.

mexicutioner! “jail is the best place to train” Bisping is training at the Wolfslair Gym and will have top fighter such as Vera and Irvin coming to his gym. He’s Eating all the right nutrients and is probably walking around at 190lb as i type this.
On the other hand you have a fighter who is known for his rock hard chin and his lack of conditioning and is walking around at about 205lb!

braveheart: How do you figure Leban is known for lack of conditioning? Remember TUF, he was the only guy to pass the conditioning test and he did it hung over!
BTW, I have braveheart tattooed on me. Scottish need some representation in the UFC.

Leben is NOT known for a lack of conditioning!
by chefdaddy on May 8, 2008 8:20 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
MAN, this SUCKS. I, like most, was REALLY looking forward to this fight.
About Leben’s conditioning, it is just fine. BNF made a great point about TUF 1 and the conditioning test – he “out-stamina’d” Kos, Diego, and everyone else.
Throwing a lot of punches takes a lot out of you. For a good example, look at this past episode of TUF. Jeremy May got tired after throwing 2 minutes worth of punches. Yeah, his conditioning was awful, but the phrase “let him punch himself out” is valid. The only time besides the Kalib fight that Leben really looked winded was against Terry Martin. That was a 3 round SLUGFEST.

I think you can do cardio in the pen, you can jog in place all day, fall on your belly, jump up, you know what I mean.Let me tell you all, if he does his time, shows up, and wins, he deserves a LOT more respect. He will get mine!!!!!!

Yeah, that’s if he can control himself here in Hawaii. Dude just got arrested for trying to pick on some kids at a 7-11 by bashing the kid’s car window. I guess that’s how some people get prepared for a big fight, by picking on someone smaller.

the math isn’t working for me… did he already spend a week in jail? did he turn himself in on the 30th? is he getting out with only 5 days until the ppv? or is the sentence for 28 days?

Also this all assumes he has been in jail since he turned himself in.

Name me 4 people BISPING has decisively finished…
…
…
…
…you can’t, cause he hasn’t finished 4 people decisively. Bisping is sub-par at best and is no where near being in another league compared to Leben.
Leben has finished way more fights decisively than him and has produced WAY MORE entertaining fights.
BISPING = OVERRATED
by Cool Hand Chad on May 8, 2008 6:03 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Chad,
Actually, only two of Bisping’s 16 fights have gone to decision. Most were wins by(T)KO. Bisping, is very capable of finishing. Now if you want to talk about the competition he has finished… well then you might have an argument. As you well know most of those fights were in th UK. To be fair he was the LHW champ in his promotion, but the guys he fought were not of the caliber of those on the UFC roster.
Therefore, I don’t think Bisping is as overrated as he is truly untested. Leben is (was) a great fight for Bisping. Let’s see what he is made of and where he falls in the MW division.
by Jeff on May 8, 2008 6:39 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree he is VERY untested, but as we all know, who you fight in the smaller promotions really doesn’t mean anything until you’re tested against the elite. He hasn’t impressed me in the UFC since his come from behind win against ELVIS, and even there he wasn’t dominant, but he showed a lot of heart.
I still feel people over-hype BISPING way too much. Less than a year ago people were calling for his head over the HAMILL fight. Now he beats a less-than-stellar Charles McCarthy and everyone is calling him the second coming at MW.
by Cool Hand Chad on May 8, 2008 6:59 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Oh, I agree. Listen, I’m a fan of Bisping, but in no way is he ready for the cream of the crop MWs. I really hope this fight still happens, I want to see what Bisping can do against a true puncher. By the way, I agree with your assesment of Bisping’s UFC fights. He did show tremendous heart in the fight against Elvis. That being said, I think he should have dominated that fight. The Hamill and Evans decisions were very close, but as you eluded to, finish the fight and don’t make them close.

Hate to say I told you so, but if he didn’t have a fight over seas coming up, he would have NEVER turned himself in. He hasn’t changed a bit, and you can track my comments back, I said the judge isn’t dumb, and he’ll make an example out of him. If he was fighting in the states, he would never have turned himself in. He hasn’t changed as a man, he wanted to get paid. Serves him right, and lesson learned, make your court dates fellas!!
by kevin on May 8, 2008 4:44 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Some of you obviously haven’t got a clue what you are talking about saying he “hasn’t changed” and “the only reason he turned himself in was so he could fight”. Leben tried to settle this matter over a year ago and some azz-hole probation officer wouldn’t let him transfer his probation to Hawaii where he was being offered the job of a lifetime for most MMA fighters. I believe in being a “stand-up” guy myself but it looks like the only person willing to try and resolve this matter is Chris…..not the system.
by leben2006 on May 8, 2008 5:15 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I didn’t realize the people in charge have to allow him to go to hawaii. Do the crime do the time. If the job wanted him that bad he could have finished the “drunk school” and fines and then gone. He didn’t kill someone, so I highly doubt that they are just screwing with him, there are plenty of worse criminals to screw with

Making weight won’t be a problem, it’ll be conditioning. They base their meals on a 2000 calorie a day diet. As an officer said to me years ago when I told him their food f ing sucked, he replied, “This is designed to keep you alive, want to keep from losing weight? You better get canteen.” Canteen are the extra items you get when people from the outside put money into your account. So he will have a very improper diet and no place to do any cardio. Like all of us well respected MMA fans didn’t see this coming.
Earlier you said the fight card “wasn’t that impressive”?? Wow, you’re joking right? I think the UFC more than made up for the loss of Liddell, not to mention the undercard that was already stacked before the Iceman’s injury.

NO WAY MAN.
People can say what they want, but LEBEN always puts on an entertaining fight, win or lose. He’s a warrior with a 10-3 record in the UFC. Anyone who wants him axed from UFC and their weakest division, MW, is absolutely crazy and just hating on him.

Not a chance. Leben not only has a much more impressive UFC record that any of the fighters that were cut, but he always puts on an exciting fight (minus the Starnes fight) and he has a fan following. Much more so than any of the cut fighters. Leben’s contract was just up recently and he was planning in leaving the UFC and spoke quite candidly about doing so. He wanted to and was ready to leave the UFC. But the UFC wanted Chris Leben and the got the deal done.
Leben is in the UFC to stay.

Cardio won’t be a factor in their fight. I will be amazed if it gets out of the first round. Leban has a huge heart which will make up for the lack of cardio anyways. Remember the first TUF he was the only one to pass the cardio test, and he did it hung over. No way Leban passes up this opportunity to whoop on Bisbing.

people arent seriously buying this card are they??? i mean fans gotta show dana somewhow that putting on a shitty card like this and charging isnt gonna fly w most fans. there are over 150 fighters and matchups that would be interesting to watch. There are fighters who would step in at any moment to fight eachother and get paid it so i dont get it when they pull of a weak card like this! This one should def be FREE on spike. I will have no problem paying for the following one w BJ and tito etc. but NOT this one.
theres no need for leben to call off this fight either. most fighters stay in shape for the most part, they eat & breathe MMA so a few days off wont make much of a difference, especially for the type of fighter leben is either way. Im hoping he puts bisping to sleep.
by blah on May 8, 2008 5:26 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
agreed, they cut the rest of the weight in final week, and this card sucks regardless. I’ll buy it, but I buy em all! If he’s still on probation after the jail stint, they may not allow him to leave the state, never mind the country.
and for the guy who said Leben “will get the top bunk” you do realize that there are a lot tuffer guys out there than Chris Leben, and a prison fight has no rules!
by kevin on May 8, 2008 5:32 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Why do people always try to get people to not buy cards? That is just stupid. Everyone said the card with BJ/Stevenson would suck and we should’t buy it. What happened, sick card, I think we got to see 8 fights on PPV. There are tons of good fights on this card. You could flip flop the under card with the main and I would still probably buy it.
I agree with you that Leban should and probably will still fight. It won’t get out of the first round anyways so he won’t need much cardio. The only way he won’t fight is if for some reason Dana says no.

I agree he’ll fight unless probation says he can’t leave the state or he can’t get a visa.

AGREED!
These are your classic Message Board Bitchers living up their stereotype who make all of us other true fans look bad.
The card will rock! They’ve probably been watching the sport since the premiere of The Ultimate Fighter. Big names don’t always make great fights!
by Cool Hand Chad on May 8, 2008 6:19 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree chad, a lot of undercard fights are better than so called main events, but you need a name to bring in casual fans. I’ve been an mma fan for 10+ years, and Matt Hughes (a big name) doesn’t excite me as much as the Brandon Vera fight! Like I said, Chuck/Rashad didn’t excite me at all
by kevin on May 8, 2008 6:55 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Good to see you are a 10+ years fan and not some bandwagon. I as well have been a long time fan, following it since the first event in Colorado.
Chuck/Rashad was pushing it for a headliner, but in my opinion HUGHES/THIAGO is a classic “pass-the-torch” test for Thiago. He beat Karo and is obviously in line for a title shot down the road after Fitch/GSP. This will see if he is the real deal against the Top Tier talent. New vs Old. I like this match up, but I am going with HUGHES. The man has only lost to 2 people in the past 7 years: GSP and BJ PENN. To me, besides GSP, the fight is always Matt Hughes’ to lose.

Cool Hand Chad:
You are obviously very passionate about MMA and that’s great. BUT chill out with the whole “true fan” vs. bandwagon deal. You should be happy that a sport that you follow is slowly gaining the recognition it deserves.
BTW – Chuck/Rashad would have been a snoozefest. Rashad with his lay-n-pray, trying to avoid Chuck’s bombs. Zzzzzz…
by OJR on May 9, 2008 9:28 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
OJR:
I agree Chuck/Rashad wasn’t main event worthy, I stated that earlier.
Now, about the chilling…
I am ecstatic the sport is where it is today. I have several friends who fight. I love that there are fans out there that support MMA and that the fanbase is growing vastly. BUT, what I do have a problem with is people who have NO KNOWLEDGE OR CLUE about facts and fighters that get on internet message boards, state bullshit facts based on there own personal opinion with nothing to back them up. Not only do they push just their opinion, but they show that they truly don’t know the sport at all.
So, do I love that everyone on MMAMania is watching the sport? YES, I love it. But don’t comment on things you know nothing about with nothing to support your opinion. Provide something to back your point up instead of making bonehead calls. Maybe if you had stuff to back up your argument, you could sway people to your side.
just my opinion though.

I would imagine there are too many unknowns and it would be too big of a risk to not look for a replacement to one of the big fights on the card. Can Leben train enough, will he make weight, will UK customs grant a work permit to someone straight out of jail, etc etc. To hope it all works out is just too much of a risk to the card and saleability of the event.
by The_Bantam on May 8, 2008 5:34 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
u make some good points! i don’t think the ufc will have a problem looking for a Leben. In fact i think there will be fighters eager to fight Bisping.
A win over Bisping in the uk, in a paper-thin division will be a short-cut to the number 1 contenders spot.
by braveheart on May 8, 2008 5:42 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not even close. The number 1 and 2 contenders are Franklin and Hendo. Bisping would get beaten to death by either of them. So a win over Bisping will not ‘catapult’ anyone anywhere. They might just step up a rung on the ladder.
by chefdaddy on May 8, 2008 8:33 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Got to say it again—who was managing/looking out for this guy? If he had resolved this several months ago, no problem.
Can Dana risk having him on the card? He may lift weights in jail, but that’s a lot different than an MMA workout. If he fights and gasses in the first round, Dana will make a lot of people mad.
Free on spike is my call, whether Leben fights or not.
by BobC on May 8, 2008 5:34 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
The obvious decision would be for Kendal Grove or Evan Tanner to step in because there fighting 2 weeks after and are probably already in shape as it is
by braveheart on May 8, 2008 5:35 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Bisping got asked to drop down a division due to lack of challengers at MW. Under normal circumstances neither of these guys would fit the bill of demonstrating Bisping going through the gears towards a title bout. However, given that Bisping has only just dropped down the weight, he still needs to prove himself and either of those guys could at least keep his momentum going.

Kendall Grove vs Michael Bisping. The Season 3 TUF winners square off in the octagon. Its marketable.
by ViolentMike on May 9, 2008 9:42 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yup, especially when considering the UK audience. TUF 3 got a lot of people interested because of the Brits involved so despite Groves slump in progress and fall from grace, he is relatively well known. Not a bad alternative at short notice.
by The_Bantam on May 9, 2008 10:38 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Unfortunately, Grove is scheduled to fight Tanner at the TUF 7 finale. The TUF 7 finale is pretty freaking stacked. They can probably re-shuffle and get Grove or Tanner to fight Bisping since supposedly Quarry turned down the fight due to minor injury.

Part of me is saying “I hope it happens”, BUT, part of me is saying “I hope he does not do something foolish like take a fight with 12 days prep time.”"(it’s not worth it).

Chris Leben’s heart will be telling him to take the fight, but he needs to listen to his brain and coaches – he simply can NOT take the fight. Not only is a big fight and all, but the fight also takes place in the UK – where he’d have to adjust to the time difference. Most fighters fly out to the UK at least 10 days before the event. Leben will just be getting out of jail. He has zero time to get in training. The last two weeks is cool down period where you actually do very little training.

When this was announced most on this forum agreed it was a true test for Bisping at last. Now if he goes in and destroys Leben everyone will say it was because of jail.

Leben should not have put himself in this position. People praise him because he has changed, but if he really had changed he would not be sitting in jail and very possibly missing a big fight. If he does fight and loses that takes away from Bisping and questions will still be there about how good he is.

This warrent was due to him breaking his probation by moving to HI to train. He had a dui three years ago, this hardly makes him a thug. People are acting like he robbed a 711 or something. What is crap is the district A wouldn’t let him move in the first place. I had the same situation happen to me, and I just mailed in monthly reports. I hope this fight still happens, just on another card. And for the dude that said the Ufc will release him, thats not happening. The Ufc releases fighters due to preformances in the octogon, look at Sherk, he was found guilty taking a illegal substance, and where is he now? Leben has a lot of heart, thats one of the most important things in mma.

While there were rumours that this card would be free, I really think that we are looking at a PPV beacause of the economics of staging a fight in the UK. I’m not sure how the UK comissions work. However, with the weak dollar the price of staging an event in the UK increases.

Where o where is Dan Henderson, calling Dan Henderson…
Yes, I know the UFC would never put Bisping up against Hendo especially in Britain, but right now doesn’t that seem logical?
What about Yushin Okami? He has not been “offically” linked to Anderson, it all has just been thoughts.
Rich Franklin can’t fight right now, he feels like he can’t peak at the right time.
So I dunno who is available to fight at 185 that has a marketable name to go against Bisping.
Maybe Nate Quarry? He didn’t get hit in his fight so that could happen.

Okay, with the UFC not mentioning anything about this fight. Joe must be trying to sign someone for this fight. Word is Quarry picked up a minor injury? Is Cote ready to go? I can’t see Tanner or Grove being moved from a TUF card to what amounts to a co-main event on a PPV.

232 comments, that is the most in a long time. Nice to see Leben stir the pot a bit in the MMA world. To bad it is for going to jail and missing a fight!
