UFC Quick Quote: Jones Jr. before St. Pierre for "The Spider"

Props: Tatame.com
"St. Pierre is a great fighter, but I would never put on weights to face the champion of [another] category. My weight is 98kg and I lose weight to fight at 83kg and I would never make that. But people talks what they want and if this fight really happen, I hope to make a good performance. By now I am in fattening stage (laughter). I don’t have a bout scheduled and we are trying to make this fight against Roy Jones Jr. This is a personal wish"
UFC middleweight champion Anderson "The Spider" Silva responds to comments made by UFC welterweight champion Georges "Rush" St. Pierre in an interview last week about the prospect of a Spider/Rush superfight.

Silva wants this fight bad, and they should let him have his wish. If he loses, all it will prove is that Jones is better boxer than Silva. Not better athlete or better MMA fighter, but a better boxer. Nothing alse at all. I love to watch this, I don’t think Silva would win, but I think it would be entertaining, and Silva is really passionate about this. He deserves to get his wish

I completely agree! Except, I would actually give Silva a good chance at beating Roy. The UFC needs to just put this fight together, make Silva happy and move on! Many top fighters have been having grudges with Dana in the past year, and the last thing us fans need is a disgruntled Anderson Silva right now. He has been the greatest fighter the UFC has had since his very first fight. He is a classy and very professional champion, and pissing him off, or potentially loosing him would be UNFORGIVEABLE!!! I think I would really stop watching the UFC if Dana managed to ruin his relationship with Anderson. Anderson is a very quite and reasonable guy and you got to be a real dick to puss him off!
Hopefully it all works out for the best!

I think Anderson has a good chance at Roy as well. If this was Roy in his prime I give Anderson no chance.
by Shadyone33 on Apr 30, 2008 9:48 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Agreed. At the plus 1100 odds that Anderson is at, I would DEFNITELY bet a small amount of money on him. If it was the RJJ of 10 years ago, than no way. But Roy is old now, but he is and always has been a boxer, which gives him a distinct advantage there. Anderson is actually the bigger person of the two fighters, and you know that ANderson can take a punch since he’s used to getting hit with 5 ounce gloves, not pillows. Of course RJJ would have to be the favorite, but at those odds, I couldn’t pass up a bet on Silva. His precision accuracy and fantastic foot work would come into play, and of course, for the time being, he would only train boxing.

I can see why they dont want him to fight what if he gets hurt or breaks his hand then we wont get to see him fight for a long time

break his hand with a 16oz. glove on compared to a 4oz? yea right…MONEY is the reason this fight will never happen
by Chadx23 on Apr 30, 2008 4:18 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
If they fought it wouldnt be a 16 ounce glove there only used for sparring it would be an 8 or 10 ounce glove.

…man, I hope it happens… Love to see it… and I got Silva at plus 1400 months ago.

With all due respect, how do you know that Anderson is a “very” quiet and reasonable guy? What are you his brother? Is your reasoning based on the 2 minutes you see of him on tv every few months? Don’t judge a book by it’s cover, you don’t know what goes on behind closed doors.
This is a business and, as such, they “may” all be pricks for all we know, and they “may” be cool, or some may be pricks and some may be cool…who knows. I don’t these dudes, and neither do you.

I’m actually against Silva fighting RJJ right now because RJJ isn’t as highly regarded as he was before. I want to see the best MMA has to offer fight the best boxing has to offer.
I’ve heard of RJJ possibly being matched up against Joe Calzaghe. That would be good news for Silva. If RJJ could beat a highly regarded undefeated champion like Calzaghe, that would boost RJJ’s stock a ton. It would also help the UFC if Silva were to fight RJJ. It would also bring some exposure to the U.K. where Calzaghe is from.
by RealDrew on Apr 30, 2008 1:45 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
No way in hell Silva would beat Calzaghe in a boxing match. Joe just beat Bernard Hopkins as well as Jeff Lacey.
Not that it matters, this fight would never happen :P

Lets stop the madness. Silva is a badass in MMA but RJJ would OWN him in a boxing match. And RJJ is past his prime! Stick to MMA, Silva.

IMO, a fight against a boxer would “carnival-ize” the sport. The true appreciation of MMA would be lost if this were to happen. Silva just has to keep doing what he does best and Dana will lose sleep sooner or later due to the lack of a MW contender in the UFC.
As far as GSP – he would destroy Silva on the ground… just gotta get past that jab. Heck, Lutter was holding his own until he made a mistake. If Silva made it to 170, he’d be so scrawny it wouldn’t even be interesting.
by DJ on Apr 30, 2008 8:43 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Silva couldn’t possibly make it to 170. They would have to fight at a catch weight or at 180. If GSP were able to “get past the jab”, knees, and elbows of Silva and take him down, he would be stuck in a body triangle and they would sit in guard until stood back up. Silva’s overall length and size would give gsp trouble on the ground. GSP looked great in top possition against the 5’6" Matt Serra, but Silva would be a little more difficult to work with.
by James S on Apr 30, 2008 9:42 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I definitely do not think that GSP would destroy Anderson on the ground – no way. Anderson is bigger, longer, and stronger. Also, he has a better guard than GSP. I say that because I can hardly remember the last time I seen GSP in his guard…
by ViolentMike on Apr 30, 2008 9:59 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
and I doubt you’ll see him in his guard anytime soon, who’s gonna take GSP down? He’s got the best wrestling in all of MMA.
by GSP4Prez on Apr 30, 2008 1:25 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
You don’t have to take someone down to get them on their back. You can knock them down.
by James S on Apr 30, 2008 2:22 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I meant “destroy on the ground” if Silva was 170. GSP constantly trains with people much larger than himself… I do agree Silva’s long arms and legs would be troublesome but Silva would definitely have trouble with GSP on top of him.
by DJ on May 1, 2008 11:12 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
How can you say that GSP will destroy Silva on the ground? Silva just won against one of the best wrestlers in the UFC in Dan Henderson and Hendo likes to fight in the 205 weight class so is used to figthing against bigger, stronger men than Silva.
I think you underestimate Silva’s ground game.
If the fight takes pace it’ll be at Middleweight, I imagine that GSP will be looking to move up anyway in the near future.

I wish this would stop getting so much press coverage (Silva vs Jones). Its never ever ever gonna happen unless Silva quits the UFC which i severely doubt he will.
Its all a bit of fun talking up the fight but its like saying who would win out of Batman and Spiderman.
Interesting debate but irrelevant.

have you guys read the whole interview? silva at one point jokes:
“"I didn’t know about those Pierre ’s statements, you are giving me this information now. What can I say? I think what is most important is that I will be no unemployed (laughter).”"
Now, there is an old saying here in Brazil (I’m not sure if you guys have something similar) in every joke there is a little bit of truth to it. If Dana does not allow the spider to fight jones I wouldn’t be surprised if he quits the UFC and go fight jones. Now, would you guys be willing to allow silva to potentially lose a boxing match but still have him in the UFC or would you rather lose him all together? I say give him what he wants, he deserves it.

Ok, never mind, I just read the interview in portuguese and the translation is really poor. All he said was that if the fight happens with st. pierre that it would be a good thing, because he wouldn’t be unemployed for lack of worthy opponents. Who translate these things???

No way does Dana allow this. He didnt even let Randy go fight Fedor and thats MMA to MMA not MMA to Boxing. I wish it did happen though, because I think Silva would give Roy a run for his money! Roy is old now!

I can’t understand why anyone on this site wants to see a boxing match. I thought we were MMA fans. I would rather see Anderson destroy Rich 3 more times than watch boxing.

I’m no fan of boxing, but I wouldn’t mind seeing how the spider does outside his comfort zone against a legend in his own right. It’s all about the challenge. War Anderson!

First off GSP would get owned by Silva…enough said. As far as the RJJ thing, Dana isn’t gonna let it happen, but on the same note, BJ fought when he was WW champ and basically told the UFC to fuck off. We all see how bad that was for his UFC career! So what if Silva just goes out and fights anyways, do you really think the UFC is going to fire him? He’s is the best p4p fighter in the world and the most exciting (as well as one of the most popular) fighters in the UFC today. I say he just goes for it!!
by kevin on Apr 30, 2008 11:08 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I wouldn’t be surprised if Anderson Silva retires soon… He’s undefeated in the UFC and he’s crushed Rich twice and submitted Hendo… Who the hell is gonna challenge him?
Wandy might drop down and pose some problems, but even then Anderson Silva is an excellent counter puncher and would pick him apart…

If this fight were to happen, it should be at MW for Silva’s title. He’s the one with the better resume as a champion with 3 defenses. St. Pierre just regained his title so why would Silva want to cut weight and challenge St. Pierre at his own weight. I think St. Pierre should try and defend his title a few times before we start talking about superfights between two fighters of different weights. The only superfight I can see happening is if Silva defends against Okami and moves up to LHW to fight the winner of Forrest and Rampage. Then, let Franklin or Hendo win the MW title and dominant for a while. Silva’s boxing match is not a very good idea either. Why would Dana let his best fighter waste months on training for a fight with a guy from another sport. The UFC is starting to like like Pride used to. Pride had a handful of good fighters from each division and the only way they could put together exciting fights was to match them up in open weight fights. They need to start protecting the fighters that have winning streaks and only match them up with the other great fighters when they have 3 or 4 in a row. Currently, the Mw and HW divisions are lacking a fighter that has a UFC record that exceeds the rest of the weight class. Especially HW. We need some of the larger LHW fighters to put on weight and move up to make the HW division more exciting. LW, WW, and LHW are stacked and there’s not too much in the other 2 weight classes. All these releases that are being made by the UFC is ridiculous.

Am I the only one who thinks GSP will win easily against Silva?
There is no doubt in my mind that GSP will take Silva down at will and gnp him into submission.
The only chance Silva has is his bjj but I think GSP won’t fall into one. GSP will not trade blows with him and Silva will not be able to stop GSP’s takedowns.
Both fighters are awesome but I think GSP is a bad match for Silva.
by rhv on Apr 30, 2008 1:23 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
yeah, one of the only ones I can think of. !ST off your GOD gsp won’t beat BJ, and I think the real super fight (bare with me now) is BJ/Silva at MW. Name someone else that is crazy enough and skilled enough to own 3 titles at once…you can’t!!
by kevin on Apr 30, 2008 1:28 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Actually Silva is good enough to hold belts in any of the divisions. He owns the MW, he would be a top contender in the LH division and welterweight he would be unstoppable. I dont think he would ever make the weight for a HW fight but he could beat the majority of fighters in that division pretty easily. The only thing that stops him from fighting in the LW division is the fact that he would probably be just skin and bones, but would own anyone down there anyway.
by JJ on Apr 30, 2008 3:09 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Anderson at WW is a laughable concept. He is far to large to get that small…
If he was going to do 3 divisions, it would have to be MW, LHW, HW…
by tm2k on May 2, 2008 5:45 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
kevin you never give GSP any respect, and nobody respects your biased opinion against him. You just shrugged off GSP with this comment just to give props to someone GSP beat, someone who left the division just to get away from the bigger, stronger GSP. BJ this, BJ that…..you’re nothing but a GSP hater. I love BJ, and think he is top-4 pound for pound, and think he is a great challenge for GSP, but you seem to think GSP is overrated, that he got lucky against BJ, that BJ will destroy him if they fight again. You’re annoying. Someone else mentioned that GSP’s wrestling is the best in MMA, and you replied with “best wrestling in mma???LOL.” Fuck yeah the best wrestling in MMA, have you been watching. Or are you just stuck on the fact that you don’t like him, and you’re not man enough to give him respect. Kenny Florian gave him the crown of being the top, or one of the top, wrestlers in all of MMA, as well as everyone else who watches the UFC with open eyes and open heart. Get over GSP, because this guy isn’t going nowhere. He’ll be the face of this organization for years to come, and if you don’t like it, theres always the WEC.
by Cory on Apr 30, 2008 4:22 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree that GSP is top 5 P$P! The fact that I don’t like him has nothing to do with the fact that BJ will destroy him. Anderson silva is (along with BJ) my favorite fighter, and yes, I think BJ has a better chance at beating silva than GSP does. No doubt GSP is dominant, but can he be dominant or even competitive at 4 weight classes??? no!!
by kevin on Apr 30, 2008 7:12 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t think anyone could be dominant at 4 weight class and I KNOW BJ CAN’T for sure. Your not going to convince anyone that BJ has been dominant at WW with 1 win and 2 losses (the LAST 2 to boot). I don’t see a long list of victories at 185 or 205 either. BJ hasn’t even proven he can be kingpin at LW. Lets see if he can get by Sherk. The only way someone is going to beat Silva is take him down and GnP. GSP has a much better chance to do this than BJ does. So we know BJ tried and he ISN’T dominant at 4 weight classes and at the momment we can only speculate how GSP would do. The one thing we know FOR SURE is , GSP OWNES the WW division and BJ hasn’t YET proved he ownes the LW.

If the fight stays standing, it’s Silva… if it’s on the ground, it’s GSP.
I don’t believe GSP can keep Silva on the ground for more than 3 rounds.
A Championship 5 rounder it’s Silva by TKO or Dec. A 3 rounder it’s GSP by Dec.
Dana White already said he would never allow the Roy Jones vs Silva fight… ‘watch’ White is going to start getting peeved at Silva.

I would think hendo is better and stronger on the ground than GSp, and once he took Silva down he was unable to do anything. I would like to hear Nate mardqurdts thoughts about a possible GSP-Silva matchup. Even though I say hendo is better and stronger, I think GSp is busier on the ground than hendo. I still think Silva completely dominates GSP. two of my favorite fighters, I would love to see the fight and find out for sure.

I think GSP could win. But this fight won’t happen along with the Roy Jones fight. Neither of them make sense. One fight I’d love to see would be Wanderlei dropping weight and fighting at middleweight. That woudl be awesome to see the battle of Silva’s. Wanderlei can take a punch and keep firing back. I think he did well against Chuck and pressed the action a lot of the fight. I think that fight was closer than what it was scored. If…Sorry, WHEN Wanderlei runs through Jardine, he should think about dropping to middleweight.
by Shadyone33 on Apr 30, 2008 3:31 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think he has a good chance as well. I think that he’s too smart to get submitted, he pulled out of a submission attempt by Serra pretty quick. I don’t think that this fight or the Jones fight will happen though. I’d love to see Wanderlei move down in weight. He took some bombs from Chuck and kept firing back. I actually think that fight was closer than it was scored because Wanderlei was pushing forward for the majority of the fight. If he were to drop in weight, I’d love to see a showdown of the Silva’s. I’m not saying Wanderlei would win, but man…It would be a heck of a fight.
