The Ultimate Fighter 7: Episode 5 recap and discussion

Episode five of The Ultimate Fighter 7 begins with a recap of Matthew Riddle helping Coach Rampage and the rest of Team Blue get off to a frigid 0-2 start.
Tim Credeur pays a visit to Riddle after the fight and congratulates him on a close fight - and then inexplicably offers to buy him an X-box 360. Riddle returns the favor by telling the cameras he feels like he won. He also mentioned something about becoming a Chippendale but my Gaydar immediately blocked any further incoming transmissions.
Out of nowhere Jeremy May decides to compensate for his low self-esteem by telling the world he gets the skins 2-3 times a day and that his girlfriend is in danger of having her back broken upon his return. Wherever she is Jeremy, I'm sure her and her parents will appreciate your delicate approach to bedroom intimacy.
May also finds humor in locking guys out of the house and throwing random objects at people like Jesse Taylor who possess a low tolerance for immaturity.
Coach Rampage reminds his team during drills that they're not playing pattycake. I'm sure at that time he missed the irony in using a reference from an old English nursery rhyme prior to introducing Michael "The Count" Bisping as a guest trainer (sans subtitles).
He gets a typical warm American greeting by getting kicked right in the nuts. Welcome to TUF 7 Mr. Bisping.
Jeremy May feels like he is going to get picked next. Rampage still thinks it's going to be Patrick Shultz. May also believes there is no one on Team Brown that could (or would) stand with him. Riddle politely nods as visions of X-box dance in his head.
A confident Team Brown starts sparring and Matt Brown gets a warning from Coach Griffin to ease off the throttle. I wouldn't call Matt Brown stoic but he seems to skulk about the gym like Yul Brynner in Westworld. Even though his teammates respect his intensity there is always an element of risk in hard-sparring which Griffin is hoping to avoid.
Back at the house Jeremy May continues his quest to become this season's most loathsome contestant by spiking Matt Brown's chewing tobacco with lime juice. My spidey-sense compels me to check the preview notes for the episode title and it does not disappoint: Chewbacle. May dismisses the prank as mind games while Dolce and Credeur shake their heads in disbelief and anxiously await the return of Brown himself.
Brown doesn't blow his stack but instead promises May he'll be the next pick. May is disappointed in Brown's sense of humor and wants to punch his face in as punishment for not appreciating a good joke.
Unfortunately Brown will have to wait because Coach Griffin has already chosen Dante Rivera to fight Brandon Sene.
Sene gets the toughness seal of approval from Coach Rampage and reveals that he is a former Marine Sniper who knows how to play mind games.
Rivera looks to use his age and experience to his advantage and the game plan is to secure the takedown and lock in the submission (despite the marked difference in size).
Team Brown's Dante Rivera (10-2) vs. Team Blue's Brandon Sene (2-0)
Round 1: Rivera charges in with a combo and they lock up against the cage. Rivera eventually turns him and gets the trip. Rivera working for side-control. Sene powers out and they get to their feet. Rivera charges again and they're back standing against the cage. Sene turns him and uses knees to the leg. Rivera answers. Rivera trying for the takedown but Sene isn't having it. Mazz warns about the slow pace and eventually breaks it up. Rivera shoots and they hit the side of the cage for the third time. Rivera gets him airborne and lands a huge slam. Rivera eats some elbows from the bottom and seems unable to get any offense going. Rivera drops down and looks for a leg submission. Sene kicks out but Rivera stays on top until the round ends.
Round 2: Sene stalking but Rivera gets him against the cage. Sene busy with knees. Rivera doing nothing. Mazz tries to stop the action just as Rivera scoops and slams so Mazz lets it go. Definitely an awkward moment. Rivera on top but still not delivering much offense. Sene again muscles his way out but Rivera is able to trip him back down. Rampage calls for the time and no one answers. Sene gets warned for an errant bottom elbow and it must have angered him because he sweeps and starts dropping vicious elbows from the top to a bewildered Rivera. From guard Rivera ties him up and they appear to briefly talk and smile at each other. Time expires with Sene on top. Very close.
The group is calling for a third round (sudden victory) and they get it.
Round 3: Rivera looks deflated. They exchange punches and a lazy shoot from Rivera backs Sene to the cage. Sene using knees while Rivera seems content to just hold. Mazz breaks it up and they start anew. Again Rivera rushes and backs Sene to the cage. Rivera drops down and finds just enough strength to scoop him up and drop him down. Sene very busy from the bottom with elbows. Rivera has position but can do nothing with it. He switches to side control and tries some knees. Rivera for the first time in the entire fight is starting to land some shots. Sene trying to escape but getting smothered. Round ends with Rivera in control. Again, very close.
Dante Rivera defeats Brandon Sene by unanimous decision
Like last week, this was not a very technical fight. The skill level displayed in my opinion falls short of what I would expect from a show that has reached its seventh season.
Backstage, Coach Rampage goes berserk and starts screaming about the bad judging. He leaves the gym to get some air and gives an unsuspecting parking sign a King Haku style death chop.
Team Blue is appalled by the decision and while it's not something I would call a travesty, Team Brown looks to have stolen one. Either way its 3-0 for Browntown.
They waste no time announcing next week's fight: Jeremy May vs. Matt Brown (complete with staredown). Forrest compares Matt Brown to Chuck Norris. Hopefully Griffin was referring to the ass-kicking Invasion USA Norris and not the addle twit who's peddling the Total Gym like it's not the flimsiest piece of crap since the Sports Illustrated sneaker phone.
Stay tuned next week as Brown and May settle their score (which Amir Sadollah predicts Brown will win via murder) and we get a second preliminary fight in the same episode (which lends serious credibility to Sadollah's prediction).
See you then!

How come no one is mentioning when steve maz says stop and then allows a takedown when mohawk dude clearly stopped. I for one seriously believe, while not a great talant yet, the mohawk guy got robbed in this fight. He worked more, popped up and should have had a clean break when maz said break

I saw and mentioned it too, kevin. That had me puzzled as well. He should have made them stop and not let the action continue from the takedown.

That fight was pretty rough. Leben-Koscheck from Season 1 was another terrible fight. 15 minutes of Kos laying in Leben’s guard . . . painful.

If mohawk guy had any jits, he could have had a triangle at least a half dozen times..and for a guy who said he wanted a submission, Dante could have rolled for an arm bar 5 or 6 times in that fight. My wife was literally yelling at the TV. I’ll be around this afternoon guys, got a poker tournament to win. Sorry about you Joe johnson/paul pierce bet Mike…Go celtics!!

Mohawk guy had the opportunity for a lot of Gogoplata’s other guy kept sitting way too low in his guard. I was saying “it’s right there! finish it!” but I guess they save the good stuff for the finale. Too bad they won’t fight on that card. HAHA

Sure Dante won the fight, but he hardly deserves to advance. From a fans perspective, I would MUCH rather see Matthew Riddel fight again instead of Dante. Or rather, since the two of them hate each other, let them throw down, and the winnner advances. It would never happen, but it would be cool if it did.
Riddle showed a ton more heart and determination in his loss than Dante did in his win.

I think Riddle has a very bright future in MMA if this 20yr old kid decides to stick with. After I saw the fight yesterday, I was like dude….this Dante Rivera should leave Riddle alone, to say the least.

I get a kick out of all these fans always mentioning the gogoplata, there’s a reason it’s not used very often (except in wwe). As far as Riddle having a bright future, I couldn’t agree MORE!!

I was pretty much thinking everything Dana said at the end of the match. Sene did all the damage and didn’t get hurt AT ALL. The only thing Rivera did that was impressive to me was the ankle lock attempt. His takedowns were useless.

There really needs to be some kind of change in how MMA is scored. Way too much weight is given to take downs. It’s a fight. Take downs don’t really do damage, they improve position. Position is important, but the point of a fight is to beat the other guy up, not sit on top of him.
by OutlawTruth on Apr 30, 2008 11:13 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
Yeah like it or not though, Dante held the dominant position for most of the 3rd round. Rampage’s guy should have defended the takedown attempt way better since it was the do or die round. It’s fights like these that really make you appreciate the good ones.
by sudnvictree on May 1, 2008 12:08 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Personally I had it scored that Dante won the 2nd and 3rd rounds based PURELY on positioning. What drove me insane was at the end of the third when he had side control and landed some good knees to the Sene’s body and he just stopped attacking completely for the last 30 seconds. Take a lesson from Heath Herring and just keep making those shots until Sene decides to block them and leave no doubt that you won.

Not Dantes best showing, but sometimes a wins a win. Obviously its not good when Dana says that the loser won, and I can’t totally disagree. He just used his BJJ only in this match. Its obvious to all that the UFC doesnt tolerate this in its fights, laying n praying wont get you booked for fights, it’ll get you released. Almeida, soon to be new king of the 185 division.

I think it’s quite generous to classify ‘taking a guy down and lying in half guard & side control whilst getting elbowed in the face’ as using ‘his BJJ’. There was very little effort to improve position and there were armbars all over the place, not to mention the fact he left himself wide open for a triangle on at least 3 occassions.

you know, I was expecting Dante to be a whole lot BETTER because of his experience, but he sucked. He did no damage whatsoever…. That was bad judging. All he did was take Brandon down and kind of laid on top, didn’t really do much sub attempts (other than ankle lock attempt) and no pass attempts.
Fighters like Yushin Okami and Sean Sherk kind of have the same philosophy, but they kind of do it more convincingly, that they deserve the win. I actually like those guys even though boring, they are effective and show true skill but Dante had weak take downs and didn’t do much to deserve a win.
Although Brandon didn’t do much either, when they were standing apart, he should have fired a lot more strikes to show he was winning on stand up.
Horrible fight by two undeserving fighters. I can’t wait to see Brown v. May, that will be awesome. Let’s hope next week’s episode will make up for this one…this week’s episode sucked.

The fight would not have been as boring if Dante would go get in the bed if he wanted to sleep. Sene won that fight with out a doubt, he worked three times as much as Dante off of his back. I don’t ever care to see him fight again. If Forrest truly believes that dude won that fight he’s crazy. I also believe the judges should have to study mma so they can make better decisions, they are playing with peoples lives.

Honestly I seen Dante win this one. What damage did Sene do? Dante won the 1st and 3rd round hands down. Regardless of what happened in the 1st and 2nd the 3rd decided the winner and Dante won the 3rd. I agree the fight was boring but I agree with the judges.

All right. This is a rant from last week. I watch the previews for the episode where Tim S fights Riddle and there’s a quick shot where Forest is screaming into the ring…“that’s f’n illegal, ref”. So I am excited to see what that was all about. So I watch the whole episode and I never see anything referencing that sound bite. WTF, UFC? Man, I was pissed because it reminded me of the local news mentioning at the top of the newscast that there was a “shark attack” or some big story and of course they don’t air that story till the end of the newscast so you are forced to watch the whole hour. Felt like the UFC pulled a fast one. Did they?

Sene has some strength, great athlete with a bit of talent… with the right direction he can be a maniac @ 185. Rivera had about nothing. But I dont think the fight should have went to Sene. Granted it could have gone either way, but the guy on top wins the fight, simple as that.

And I do not see how not improving your position or inflicting damage from the top is considered a “dominant” position.
It’s more like timidity on the ground, and there needs to be judges that can tell the difference between someone who has a dominant position, and someone who is just laying on someone else.
by DirtyML on May 1, 2008 12:58 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I gotta agree with Dana’s comment about who inflicted the most damage. Since he’s in the position where he could push for a change in the rule or policy about how the fights are being judged.

as far as judging goes, they need to use a system that is some kind of mix of the ufc judging and pride judging…too much stupid crap is going on, like fighters taking someone down, falling asleep on top of them, and then winning.
and judging from this fight, Dante would have gotten worked by matt riddle

Sene did all he could to win the fight, Rivera gave a terrible performance. How could a guy on top could not do some decent GnP, unless he is worried the opponent will squirm out while landing blows? Hell’ Rivera could have landed 1 or 2 quick shots, Tied it up in guard, do it again over n’ over.
What a waste of a TUF episode.
I think takedown and control is worth some heavy weight in a round by round decision. However, if the guy on bottom is inflicting more damage and the guy on top is not trying to GnP or risk some submissions, then the round should go to the guy on bottom.
I understand Rivera had dominate position and even side control, but he hardly did anything with it, while Rivera was landing lots of elbows, forearms.
Sene won the fight IMO.

Yeah. Even in guard, Sene was doing all the damage. I kept watching the fight thinking that maybe there’s stuff going on that i’m too inexperienced a fan to appreciate. You know, REALLY technical fighting for position, etc. Nope. It just sucked. Dante didn’t throw ONE punch or kick that did ANY damage. He layed on top and got elbowed. I completely agree…this is a garbage TUF series. For those who say, “if it’s garbage, don’t watch it…trust me, I don’t”. I fall asleep every time it’s on. All the participants have zero personality this time around and I don’t care if they make it or not. Both coaches are completely horrible. They can fight but they can’t coach.
I’m taking it one step further. I think the whole TUF concept in general is now outdated. It was fun for the first 3 or 4 times, but now that it’s TUF 7, it’s over the hill and just plain boring.
MMA is about great fights, not a soap opera about dudes doing childish things to one another in a house. They just give the UFC and MMA a bad name.
Each week this season I try to get through it, but within 15 minutes, I change the channel. It’s a shame to see it get this lame, since the good ol days of Kos, Leben, and the rest.
All TUF does now is just delay good UFC fights between those already in the UFC.
Screw this..bring on Ill Will and Bedlam and let’s watch some real fighters.

Dante=Wet Blanket, maybe his new nickname should be Linus. The only damage he TRIED to inflict was with 1 minute left in the third round. Sene tried to stay busy and was active on the ground. To many times judges think whomever is on top is automatically assumed to be dominant. Sure dominant from the stand point that he was laying on him, not dominant from the stand point of who is inflicting the most damage.
Secondly, damn I would hate to piss off Rampage! That boy looked like he could have killed a Rhino!

Rivera was pathetic, mostly because he looked like he was gassed by the middle of the first round. That would explain why he had no energy for the g+p and why his shoots looked so lazy. I think Forrest’s conditioning training will help this guy.
As for Sene, let’s face it – what’s the best defense to a lazy shoot? How about a knee to the head! It was there on every shoot, but Sene couldn’t or wouldn’t pull the trigger. His skills were very questionable even though his conditioning was vastly superior, but I don’t think a few knees in the clinch and a few elbows off the ground should be enough to win a fight.

Almeida must be disappointed watching one of his students look so…disinterested? I never got the feeling that Rivera was trying to do much of anything in that fight, but part of that has got to be his coaching. Forrest is playing to win, but if I were Dana White, I’d want to kill him. He’s sending his guys out there to win by decision, not knockout or submission. I mean, he was saying that he just wanted the judges to see Rivera look busy, so he’s not trying to inflict damage, just look like you won the fight. It’s a good strategy for winning (his team is 3-0), but it’s VERY boring. For someone that runs his mouth as much as Rivera, he didn’t show me much. Not sure if everyone knew he was training with Almeida; I only found out because I live in Jersey not far from Almeida’s gym and one of the guys I see at the gym I workout in trains there too and knows Dante.

Forrest Griffin is the number one contender to Quinton “Rampage” Jackson’s UFC light heavyweight championship and coaching opposite the champ in the new season of The Ultimate Fighter. After the season the two coaches will go at it one on one for the 205-lb unified world title, but first Griffin brings you an inside look at each episode of the new season of TUF.
Courtesy of the UFC and Spike TV, Forrest Griffin and InsideFighting will receive a copy of each week’s episode of “The Ultimate Fighter 7” before it airs. Forrest will then provide InsideFighting readers with his reaction to the episode in his coach’s blog which is immediately posted online after the show is done airing every Wednesday night.
I still thought watching Dante and Brandon’s fight again that Dante won. Obviously it was not in impressive fashion, it was pretty horrible actually, but he just had one of those days.
A lot of it was that Dante had a certain way he worked out before the show but he bought into my workout and I had him do a lot of things differently and he really over trained and was flat afterwards. I kind of ran him into the ground a little bit.
It was a normal workout for guys who don’t have a fight later in the week. It would have been a great workout if you had a ten day taper before a fight.
Some of the guys asked me, "Is this what you would do a week before a fight of yours?" and I said, "No way, what are you crazy? This is just what we are going to do here." The last time I did a workout like that was when I was on the show myself.
I’m not even sure the match up was my idea. The process for choosing match ups was not real formal.
In the beginning it was whoever stepped forward and said whoever they wanted to fight. With Dante the idea was to get Brandon on the ground and submit him. We knew Dante was a good Jitz guy and we knew that Brandon wasn’t.
Dante told me he was gassed. I smacked him in the face before the third round and just told him, "Gut check. Go out there and do something." I didn’t ask him to knock Brandon out, I would not have asked him for miracles, but I just wanted him to drop his hand on the other guy more than he did.
It was hard to tailor the workouts to the guys. Matt Brown and Jesse Taylor could do whatever you threw at them and ask for more. Nick Klein would work himself into the ground doing what you asked but it would be overtraining for him and he got worse over the course of the show. He did whatever I asked and never complained but he over trained instead of backing off.
It worked out well for some guys and not so well for others. But eventually the guys decided what they were going to do. I gave them workout options and they decided whether or not they were going to do that or go on the treadmill or whatever else they needed.
If the link doesnt work, heres the text
One thing I should mention is that I took Dante for a hard run right before his fight because I forgot he had a fight coming up. We were doing these native American runs and by the third mile he told me, "Hey, I think I’m going to quit doing this," and I said, "Oh yeah, I didn’t want you to do this."
I had forgotten that he was fighting the next day. I didn’t intend for him to do anything.

Rivera didn’t impress me at all, and I think his cardio might be suspect. Not a bad prelim fight, but certainly not a great one. Rivera, barring anything unforeseen, won’t make it past quarterfinals.

If Sene wanted to win the damn fight he should have fought when they were on their feet, he did nothing standing except allow Dante to shoot on him at will. It’s about where and when you are active not just the fact that you are active. He consistently waited for Dante to push him against the fence or put him on his back before he would “inflict damage”, he allowed himself to be controlled.

It’s disappointing how the UFC chooses to select fighters for the show. You’ve got a bunch of guys who talk sh#& but are largely untrained, regardless of their ‘record.’ The UFC seems to be more concerned with creating an exciting dialogue at the house than an impressive, technical match in the ring. Surely there are better guys with enough personality out there to put on the show.

Wow, what a snoozer! Dante threw about 5 punches with anything on them. Brandon’s guard was looser than a whore’s cooch. I’d call it “Lay and Pray” but I think it was more like just Lay. I really thought Dante was a better fighter with his record but he had side control a couple of times and, except for a couple of knees, he did absolutely nothing. Terrible!
