MMA Quick Quote: Kimbo Slice has a surprising ground game

"We're continuing to work on polishing his striking and we've changed his stance, which has made him an even better striker. He is more explosive now and fit. But for a guy who has had only two MMA fights, Kimbo continues to do everything right. He is going to surprise everybody with his ground game, especially those who believe he doesn't have one."

-- Bas Rutten -- former UFC heavyweight champion, MMA legend and trainer for Elite XC fighter Kimbo Slice -- talks in a recent press release about how his fighter has come a long way and is prepared to fight on the ground if need be, which goes against popular opinion that the YoutTube sensation is nothing more than a street brawler.

Kimbo added this statement and challenge:

"To all the MMA fighters who continue to disrespect me, to all those who say I don't have a ground game, I lack this, I lack that, I say, 'stop talking and bring it on. I'm ready.'"

It's now how an MMA fighta eat.

the guy has had numerous underground fights….and he is an exciting fighter …thats it…
All you guys talking shit …name one fighter that started his career fighting the best there is and is still around or even fighting for that matter..

i am a fighter and it is about EXPERIENCE… get it..and move up …
He is the main event because he puts on a good show …that is what it is all about ..entertainining the crowds…fuck guys, this is a business…you want to see an entertainining fight or a boring lay and pray fight …
And for Chuck to make a comment like he has no ground game ..WHAT THE FUCK …since when has he ever had one!!!
He fought his whole career depending on his stand up…

chuck has ground game he just doesnt need it cuz his stand up is so good if you were actually a fighter you would know that chucks sick ass sprawl is from wrestling, defending takedowns and gaining position

Talk is usually cheap, but you have to respect Bas’s word even if he’s the trainer. It may be a few more fights before he needs a ground game. I like the “bring it on” part… like the fighters actually have a say in who they fight.

by big_galagat on Apr 24, 2008 8:52 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

well this guy has actually has won some fightt unlike Brock… and they didn’t crown this guy like the UFC crowned Brock when he first came in. Kimbo is on the path to the title the right way, by fighting his way up the ladder and EARNING the strap. If Brock would have beat Mir, he would have fought for the title his next fight, HIS 2nd FIGHT EVER! thats just a whole lot of B.S.

by Drew on Apr 24, 2008 9:24 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Brock didn’t win beacuse they gave him ‘real’ competition, not a can that they knew he was going to beat like Kimbo has been receiving at Elitexc.

UFC actually tested Brock Lesnar.

What do you mean they ‘crowned’ Brock?

Also, I’m fairly sure there isnt even a HW title in elitexc.

by Shaiz on Apr 24, 2008 9:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Frank Mir or Tank Abbott – who’s the better competition.

by TD on Apr 25, 2008 12:38 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Not getting in the middle of any of this, but seriously, you cant compare people like that.

If i get in a cage and get KTFO by Chuck or Rampage or Silva, that doesnt make be a better fighter than Kimbo Slice cause he hasnt fought anyone worth mentioning… HE HASNT! But he hasnt been defeated in a real MMA-fight and he is improving.

And they WILL put him with better and better opponents if he keeps winning.

How good or how far he can get in this sport? why bother speculating? we will see…

by cmon_chokehim on Apr 25, 2008 9:56 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Who ever said Brock would get a title shot if he beat Mir?
And fyi, his next fight would be his 3RD FIGHT EVER.

Why does everyone hate on him?

You can’t bash him for being inexperienced, he is new to the sport.

Thompson is a solid opponent for his 4th MMA fight….he beat some decent guys in Pride and is big as shit

Watch…Kimbo will keep fighting cans for his next 5 or so fights, so get used to it

by UFCPreview.com on Apr 24, 2008 10:20 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Thompson is not a solid opponent.. The guy is 2-6 is his 8 fights, was blasted into another universe by Rodgers in Miami, and lost to Butterbean. Gimme a break… The guy has no ground or kicking game. Hopefully Randy straightened him out.

by TD on Apr 25, 2008 12:36 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah Exactly.. You Cant Take A New Guy And Throw Him In There With Guys Like Fedor And Bas Knows Better Then That. Bas Wants To Build Him Up First.

by Sour Diesel on Apr 25, 2008 12:37 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

But they are not building him up they headlining him as the main event already. That is not building him up this is saying he is the best. No wonder other fighters are getting fed up with it. If I was the HW champion and I was behind Kimbo on the event I would say make him fight me then if you think he is better.

The truth is he is not better he is a myth.

by Nuts on Apr 25, 2008 6:30 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

They’re not saying he’s better. He’s the one putting the butts in the seats ‘cuz a ton of people know who he is thanks to YouTube. Most people will pay to see him fight ’cuz they know who he is. I’m not saying it’s the right thing to do from a fighter’s standpoint, but from a business standpoint it makes total and complete sense and that’s what Gary Shaw, Dana White, and the rest of the PR guys do. They market what they think is going to be the biggest money maker! I know some hardcore fans are hating on the fact that Kimbo is getting all this attention, and I can see their point 100%. And I can completely see the point of the organizations marketing these new guys 100%.

by Big Jake on Apr 25, 2008 1:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

How come Cain Valasquez fought an 11-0 veteran in the UFC and whipped his ass. Really, he KTFOd a solid HW in the fashhion that Kimbo is supposed to be able too. How come we don’t hype him up more?

How come Kimbo doesn’t fight other young fighters with a lot of potential like him instead of fighting cans. How come Anthony Johnson and Matt Riddle fight really good fighters while still rookies and sometimes win?

this talk is meaningless, prove yourself by fighting actual competition and not cans.

by brandon on Apr 24, 2008 10:49 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think it’s funny that the MMA media outlets are trying to say people “hate” kimbo, but it’s not that we hate him, it’s the fact that the joke that is EXC brought in a thug from the streets to fight. Many, many fans of MMA don’t want to see their sport ruined and become a joke like the WWE where they’ve got these stupid ass story lines like Mayweather vs. Big Show. Bringing in Kimbo also discredits all those who have tried to make this sport professional because it gives other media outlets like Foxnews the opportunity to call the fighters barbarians. It also doesn’t help that Kimbo talks a lot of shit which he knows he can’t backup due to the fact that EXC is protecting him and giving him relatively easy fights.

Also, look how EXC promotes Kimbo… They held an event called Street Certified. They want to keep Kimbo as a thug and this sport doesn’t need that. I think it would help Kimbo if he tried to denounce what he did in the past and actively look to establish himself in a respectable organization other than the freak show that is EXC.

You all are crazy. All Kimbo says is bring it on. Others have been way more disrespectful to him than he has to anybody else.

You’d be pissed too if you only had two pro fights under your belt and Chuck Liddell was calling you out.

by RHV on Apr 24, 2008 10:54 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He’s disrespectful to the sport. Acting like bad ass because he’s beaten who he has, give me a break! I’m sorry to say, but I’m pretty sure most of us on here could take out Tank if we just ran him around the cage for a little while, all we’d have to do is blow on him and we’d win (that makes me really sad).

I wouldn’t be pissed if Chuck called me out, I’d be scared personally…

by Toms Bombs on Apr 24, 2008 11:29 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Bas also trained Duane Ludwig, Mark Kerr and Amir Rahnavardi so…Kimbo says to “bring it on” but really needs a quality opponent to be taken seriously and James Thompson isn’t. This will do nothing to disspell naysayers. Put your money where you mouth is and fight a legit top 25 heavy.

by Mrs.Featherbottom on Apr 24, 2008 11:36 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I heard from someone recently in the stockton area, that he was training with Nick n’ Nate Diaz. The report was his BJ sucks, but he’s learning to be defensive from the bottom while trying escape to stand up. On top he’s a ground n’ pounder.

Sounds pretty basic, a lot like guys who like to stand up do…

I mean we really don’t expect him to really submit a tough grappler in a tight ground situation… seriously..

So all that ever gets posted in forums are the extreme opinions, when in reality it’s probably more along the midline. Kimbo has the potential to be a great fighter, we all know that. We also all know that he is not proven yet. And he has to talk shit back to fighters and fans because there are some of them out there who talk poorly of him. In reality, we really don’t know if he is all that good or not. I do disagree with the Chuck hating though, Chuck said that youtube doesn’t make you a great mma fighter, he didn’t really call Kimbo out, though I think if chuck is being honest with himself, he’s realized that he’s damn curious about Kimbo and how a fight between the two of them would go.

by DoctorSamson on Apr 25, 2008 12:43 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Kimbo rolls with VIP crew….he should already know “ground and pound” really well!!! He boxes pretty decent and has a killer instinct. Let Kimbo crush cans this year and bring on some real competition in 2009….

by Chadx23 on Apr 25, 2008 12:46 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

exactly….one step at a time…look at Bisbing’s record and he just fought McCarthy!!!!!

I don’t thihnk Kimbo will ever become a BJJ specialist…but as long as he can defend from the bottom and learn to stand up, he WILL be formidable!

I don’t love Kimbo, but i don’t hate on the guy either, still think he should stay quiet about Chuck though

by ToeLock on Apr 25, 2008 9:02 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with everything you said ToeLock, except that he should keep quite about Chuck…Why should? He never mentioned chuck’s name before chuck started running his mouth about Kimbo.

So many people hate on this guy and I do not understand why. He is a novice mma fighter, its not his fault he gets all this attention….. I am sure he is improving and every opponent he fights his better than his last, so what more do you haters want from this guy? He is building himself up, in a smaller organizations who dont charge any money to watch him fight.

Its better than what the UFC did with Brock….They had him face a former champion in his 2nd mma fight and 1st UFC fight and the UFC had the audacity to sell it to us as a main event.

with the lack of heavyweights in todays mma, all you haters should be praying that he turns into a great Heavyweight on day instead of hating on him.

Its not like EliteXc is making him headline main events of pay per views charging us $45. he fights free to the public on showtime and CBS….what the hell is there to complain about.

He is a fighter! Should he appologize for not being scared of other establish fighters? This guy is a fighter at heart, which is something you cant teach (ask Jason Mcdonald lol). he isnt afraid to get hit and he shows sportsmanship and is working very hard to become a well rounded mma fighter, so Why the hate? Even in his back yard brawls after fights he would shake his opponents hands and show sportsmanship.

I dont think too much of Kimbo right now as an mma fighter, but you bet your keister I am rooting for him to become one.

I would like to see Kimbo vs. Cro Cop in Japan on new years eve.

Like some already said, if anyone will make him a real mma fighter it will be Bas Rutten!

by john on Apr 25, 2008 9:31 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Can we be serious…I hate it that all these people are getting offended by the “haters”. Why are you on his nuts? He hasnt done anything for the sport…yet. Dont get me wrong he has great skills to work with but since he is already in his mid thirties time is not on his side. He came from the streets, so they give him the nickname “street certified” but then Bas argues that he has never been arrested and that he is a role model?!?!? So whats the deal? Is he a thug or not? Did you see the hype video they are using for this guy? It looks like a youtube video, they are staining MMA with this guys past. Is it not bad enough that we have John McCain calling MMA “human cock-fighting” then we have fat ass Gary Shaw hyping up his big money maker as a MMA thug.
I like that he is really working hard to get established in MMA but by the time he is ready to start fighting top 25 HW’s, EliteXC will have folded by then. lol
He is trying to save face because the story leaked about him getting knocked out by forrest griffin and chuck is openly calling the guy a fraud. All the real MMA fighters know that he is sooo one dimensional that he is a joke!

Kimbo is going to lose his killer instinct as his fame grows. Mark my words, he has to remember who he is and where he has came from.

by RyanHobbs on Apr 25, 2008 1:34 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

is there a reason that everyone expects this guy to have 3 fights and be the best ever. Let the guy work his way up. No one other than Lesnar have a record as short as that in the UFC. How many guys in the UFC have a record of only 3 fights other than Lesnar and Cory Hill. Christ give the guy time. Chuck called him out, not the other way around. Did anyone see Chucks first 3 fights? if you look at chucks first 5 fights he fought nobody’s except Horn who tapped him out. You ever heard of Noe Hernandez or Paul Jones. Everyone loves to hate on anything that is not UFC whether it’s Kimbo or Fedor or whoever. The sport is called MMA, not UFC. The UFC only makes up a portion of the sport. Not the entire thing. I think its funny how Chuck started this whole thing knowing that he will never have to fight Kimbo because he can hide behind Dana and his no-transfer clauses. I guarantee you that Kimbo would fight Chuck if Dana would allow it because he’s the type of guy that doesn’t seem to give a shit about whether he wins or loses or what people see him as. He just loves to fight. Now i’m not a huge Kimbo fan by any means but he never started any of this trash talking but he is gonna stick up for himself and you gott respect that. If Chuck thinks he can beat Kimbo and that Kimbo has no skills why not finish your UFC contract and sign a 1 fight deal with Elite and Prove to the world just how superior you are and fight him. Will never happen. People that talk smack knowing that they will never have to back it up are cowards.

Oh wow, there still are a few people on this site with something intelligent to say. It seems to get drowned out sometimes with the majority seemingly wanting to pick people apart for rather trivial reasons.

I do like Kimbo though, and not because of his youtube fame or anything like that. I fail to see how he’s bringing disprespect to the sport of MMA as a lot of people seem to harp on. Is it because he’s making more money that some more experienced fighters, or is it because he actually seems to enjoy fighting? Rhetorical questions aside, the guy has my respect, if for nothing else than his desire to get better and work his butt off in the process. Chuckie might be well served to worry less about other people, and start working that GUT off instead.

by Scott on Apr 25, 2008 2:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

True, Kimbo fought cans and whooped ‘em like any decent fighter would. I imagine most Elite MMA fighters want to catch him now, before he gets better. ’Cause that’s exactly what will happen, he will get better.

by THORAZINE on Apr 25, 2008 2:56 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Yeah I don’t get all the hating. It makes no sense. Why does it matter what someone’s pedigree was before he entered MMA. Fist brawling, kick boxing, wrestling, as long as your good at MMA, there’s nothing wrong with it. And yet people start calling him out like Chuck. I’ll tell you the problem, a lot of fighters are jealous that he’s so popular without having beaten anyone significant. Otherwise why care? Is it the first time that someone entered MMA and fought low level fighters?

And I like his attitude. He respects people and then he gets negativity in return. So his answer to them is, “Bring it”. What is there not to like about this attitude? I love how game he is! He doesn’t want to banter!

Chuck, on the other hand, must be bored because he’s getting jealous of others’ popularity. He’s also still harping on the whole ‘UFC is better than Pride’ which is just so infantile and pointless.

if they stand the whole fight, chuck would do circles around kimbo worse than bruce lee to bolo, KO from signature: too many shots to the face, exchange after exchange. big surprise.

look it all sounds fine and dandy what bas is saying, but gary shaw has already stated that his ultimate goal for kimbo is to make a name for himself in mma then transfer him to boxing, and shaw signs his checks so w’ell probably never get to see his much improved “ground game”. it kinda shows were gary shaw stands as well. at least thompson has a chance to win and will actually try and win, unlike bo cantrell.
