UFC 86: Cole Miller vs. Jorge Gurgel

Jorge Gurgel vs Cole Miller

It's battle of the The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) alumni as season 5 contestant Cole "Magrino" Miller (13-3) will battle Jorge Gurgel (12-3) from Season 2 at UFC 86 in the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas, Nevada, on July 5.

Miller last appeared at UFC Fight Night 12 where he suffered a second round technical knockout loss against Jeremy Stephens. After dropping a controversial fight to Joe Lauzon via technical knockout during his TUF stint, Miller went on to defeat Andy Wang at the TUF 5 Finale and Leonard Garcia at UFC Fight Night 11.

He now stands 2-1 inside the Octagon.

Gurgel defeated John Halverson by unanimous decision at UFC 82: "Pride of a Champion" back in March and posts a record of 3-2 with the UFC. He was booted from season two after dropping a decision to late replacement Jason Von Flue.

Interesting to note that Gurgel's first 10 fights all ended by submission whereas the following five were all unanimous decisions.

In addition to this announcement, UFC.com also confirmed several other rumored bout slated for UFC 86, including Josh Koscheck vs. Chris Lytle and Patrick Cote vs. Ricardo Almeida.

fop is reporting that FOX is the leading candidate on closing a network deal w/ the ufc. this would be huge! lets keep our fingers crossed.

by b.w. on Apr 24, 2008 1:02 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

interesting!

by ( (Adam G) ) on Apr 24, 2008 1:07 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That would be sweet. IMO, they have the best sports programming and presentation of the networks. As CBS and NBC went w/ EXC and others, I thought Fox would be a better fit anyway.

I kind of like the UFC being with Spike because if you miss something you can catch it on the loop. I think that Spike does an alright job anyway.

Why is Gurgel still in the UFC?

by Easycompany on Apr 24, 2008 12:38 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Because of Dana’s new found commitment not to let any more top UFC talent escape and sign with other organizations. (please note that this is sarcasm.)

by chefdaddy on Apr 24, 2008 7:38 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree. I know a guy who trains with George and Ive met him. He’s a cool dude and all, but if it werent for him being buddies with Franklin, he wouldnt even be in the UFC. On another note, I think they should try to get a Kos/Karo match going. Im not the biggest fan of either one of those guys, but can you imagine the shit talking and hype leading up to that fight? Plus your guaranteed an awesome fight between 2 of the top w/w’s.

by The_Mexicutioner on Apr 24, 2008 9:09 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Cause his mma training business brings plenty of fans to the Ohio events.

by mmaManiaReader on Apr 25, 2008 12:32 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

both of these guys dont belong in the ufc. miller is still around probably due to his tuf contract(even the losers get contracts) and gurgel is still only around because hes buddies w/rich franklin. this fight has no interest at all.

by b.w. on Apr 24, 2008 12:39 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Cause D.White’s on Rich Franklins nuts! As well as other fighters but thats probably why . . .

I hope Cole smashes that crazed pet chihuahua of Rich Franklin’s.

by THORAZINE on Apr 24, 2008 12:57 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Have a litle respect for Rich Franklin’s Cabbanna boy! lol

I could see Gurgel serving franklin Mohito’s in a g-string!

by john on Apr 24, 2008 8:39 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thanks a lot, John. Now I see it too.

by PW on Apr 24, 2008 10:13 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Too funny, but I can totally see the scenario playing out like this: Jorge in a hot pink, mesh g-string with tassles on his nipples! “Ooops, Rich I dropped your drink umbrella, again! Let me bend over to pick it up without bending my knees.”

Go Cole!

by Ray on Apr 24, 2008 12:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

John you forgot Gurgel’s tassles on his nipples too!

by Ray on Apr 24, 2008 1:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Thanks for the visual. Jesus. Actually, in that picture I see Billy Crystal from the old Saturday Night Live saying,“You look marvelous.”

I hope Miller sends the overrated Gurgel packin’ out of the UFC.

by Clint on Apr 24, 2008 1:06 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I really hope Cole gets a submission on this guy, or finishes it with a high-kick like Andy Wang hah. Magrino FTW.

by E30kaiser on Apr 24, 2008 1:08 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Gurgel is to Franklin what D. Abbadi was to Hammill. Gurgel just had the good sense to attach himself to a good fighter.

by PW on Apr 24, 2008 1:09 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Great photo of Gurgel, I can imagine this is how he & Franklin say Hello to each other.

by UKmmaBOY on Apr 24, 2008 3:08 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

hahahaha that is hilarous lol. man wtf is up with jorge gurgel, he get’s his ass kicked for 3 rounds every time, and ends up looking like roadkill, and still corners rich franklin after hahahaha. example, ufc 77, gurgel vs alvin robinson, gets destroyed for 3 rounds, and then corners rich when he can’t even see shiet lol.

by keith on Apr 24, 2008 5:27 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I know right, like you really want to take advice about fighting from someone in your corner that’s face was beaten half retarded and is still bleeding. Worst part is, is that he was facing someone that is lucky to be Top 25 in the division…

by ViolentMike on Apr 24, 2008 11:27 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

hahaha that is so hilarious. jorge gurgel always gets his ass kicked for 3 rounds, ends up looking like roadkill, and then still corners rich franklin. example, ufc 77, alvin robinson destroys him for 3 rounds, and then he goes on to corner rich’s fight with silva, when he can’t even see shiet himself lol.

by keith on Apr 24, 2008 5:42 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Atually gurgel won round 1 of that fight, but whatever!

by john on Apr 24, 2008 8:41 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think I read that Gurgel was Ben Stiller’s stunt double in “Zoolander” and this is is head shot from that movie.

by The_Mexicutioner on Apr 24, 2008 9:16 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Kenny Florian = Ben Stiller

Rich Franklin = Jim Carey

Never heard that Gurgel looked like Stiller before…

by ViolentMike on Apr 24, 2008 11:28 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Kill-Flo is Ben Stiller. Gurgel looks like one of Zoolander’s friends who died in the gasoline fight.

by PW on Apr 24, 2008 12:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Watch a movie called “The Wild Life” with Christopher Penn, you’ll see Jorge Gurgel on there he’s playing a wrestler named Benny, it’s funny as hell! Sounds just like him too.

by Ray on Apr 24, 2008 1:15 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Jorge Gurgel looks like Fez from that 70’s show!

by john on Apr 24, 2008 2:52 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

pw: dude that died in th gasoline = Mikus! LMFAO!!

LMAO, Dude that died in the gasoline in Zoolander. lol, his name Mikus! LMFAO!

I was really impressed with gurgel in top position, he has some slick jiu jitsu. I agree that most fighters that performed the way he has so far wouldnt still be in the ufc though, if he doesnt come to this fight brawling Chris Leben style, or even if he wins and it isnt in an impressive manner, I think it should be his swan song.

by AdamYves on Apr 24, 2008 6:10 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Gurgel is a Jiu Jitsu guy. Miller is is Jiu Jitsu guy. I have to give the ground game to Gurgel on this one just due to expierience. I mean he’s an instructor while Miller is still someones student. I think Miller should use his height and reach advantage to pick apart Gurgel on his feet and use his Jiu Jitsu only to fend off submissions or stand back up.

As for Gurgel first 10 fights by submission and last 5 by decision, he wasn’t in the Octagon. People think every fight has to be finished. If so they should have round on top of round until it is over. Some guys are that well skilled and in shape that its hard to finish them in 15 minutes. All fighters aren’t brawlers and swing for the fence types. Some are calculating and technical. Remember it’s not mixed martial arts if all you want is striking only.

Joey Scarola teaches BJJ as well.

by chefdaddy on Apr 24, 2008 8:17 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Are you trying to compare Gurgel with Joey no heart Scarola? I hope not, because one thing Gurgel does not lack is heart. I’m not even a fan of his, but I’m a fan of the sport and I respect a fighter that goes out there to fight. Gurgel doesn’t run and he doesn’t duck anyone. He is not top 10 but his heart is.

And if that comment was about teaching, Scarola worked at Serra’s gym, not his own. Big difference, Gurgel has his own school.

by Getrawbc on Apr 24, 2008 9:20 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I know I was way too vague with my little comment. Sorry, I tend to jump on here at work and didn’t have time this morning to give my full thoughts. First, in no way would I ever compare anyone’s heart to Scarola. I’m not that much of a d*ck. My comment alluded more to “I mean he’s an instructor while Miller is still someones student.” By that irrational thinking one surmises that Gurgel would beat Diaz b/c Nick is only a brown belt while Gurgel has his own school. Diaz would twist him up like a pretzel. All I was saying is just b/c someone teaches doesn’t mean they are better than someone else’s student. That’s why I brought up Scarola’s teaching, cuz if he can do it, then I highly doubt the standards it takes to become an instructor. And someone on here mentioned the other day that Scarola just opened a place (not sure if he owns it, or just teaches there) and advertises that he was a participant on TUF. And it may be hard to finish a fight in 15 minutes, but it is inarguably best that a fight IS finished so as not to leave it in the judge’s hands. Whew!!! See what a windbag I am when I have the time?

by chefdaddy on Apr 24, 2008 2:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Jorge is not Rich’s pet and he never "attached himself to Rich. Him and Rich became frineds way before they were big named fighters.

As for why JG is still in the UFC, because he gives us exciting fights. The guy is a BJJ black belt but loves to stand and bang.

Jorge will finish this fight with a triangle choke. No doubt about it!

And for all of you that like to talk trash about Jorge, I suggest you head to JG’s Mixed Martial Arts and spend some time sparring with him, then let’s see how much trash you talk.

by StayDown on Apr 24, 2008 7:15 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Are you Jorge in disguise?

by UKmmaBOY on Apr 24, 2008 8:59 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No, he is just a guy who trains underneath Jorge Gurgel.

This is a tough fight for Jorge. I mean Miller has size, and he has the jitsu that could give Gurgel some problems.

I do not understand the bashing of Jorge Gurgel on this board. The guy has nothing but complete respect for his opponents, he is a class act, and all of his fights are extremely exciting. Yes, he does indeed throw his gameplan out the window, but Jorge has never left the crowd bored. Ever.

by "Mr. NC-17" on Apr 24, 2008 9:31 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes Jorge is a classy guy and does have a ton of heart but IMO he is in the UFC on the wave of Franklins previous success.

He fights cans like Danny Abbadi and cant even finish them, throwing your game plan out of the window once is understandable but doing it every fight shows lack of discipline.

by UKmmaBOY on Apr 24, 2008 10:10 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

No thanks, rather pay good money and train with people that not only know how to fight but also, and most importantly, know how to WIN!!!!!

by Ray on Apr 24, 2008 1:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

So no one at JG MMA knows how to win huh? Rich Franklin, Dustin Hazelett, Jorge, up and coming Waylon Lowe, Current TUF cast members Luke Zacharich and Matt Brown? Yeah..no one there knows how to win…or how about Josh Souder who is the newest IFL fighter??

Some people, like you, can sit here and be keyboard warriors while others, like myself and Mr NC-17 actually go out and get it done.

wow. cole is skinny 6’1" 155lbs. how do you hurt someone being that size? i wonder how much he improved since joining American Top. All the other TUF5 guys are elevating their game. it amused me when he high kicked Andy Wang dropping him TIMBERRRRRR and then after that you see Andy Wang on interviews thinking he’s a star. or how about his commercial when he was singing the E40 phone ring tone in the bathroom. anybody catch that? lol

by kama kaze on Apr 24, 2008 9:46 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dude that wasnt wang, Tha was gay Lloyd from Entourage! Ha Ha!

LOLOL, nice one!

“Yoouuuuuuuuuuuuu and that monkey, trying to get to yooouuuuuu and that mokey. I be shaking, humpin, thumpin, mooooovin that body, moooooovin that body”

The part he starts to scream and headbang at is “When I pull up on the block…”

Trying to remember the song….

I’m just setting myself up for him crying win, lose, or draw. I’ve had enough of this guy and I got my wish with Kaleb, hopefully this guy is never to be seen in the UFC again after this fight.

by Shadyone33 on Apr 24, 2008 9:39 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Cole Miller should win this fight. I’m sick of Gurgel and his boring 3 round fights. Hopefully Miller will knock him out.

jorge gurgel wins via desicion, or he’ll lost via desicion

by mad_drummer on Apr 24, 2008 1:09 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I still bet Jorge will come out with Rich walking behind him, and in his corner, he has to, cause without Rich, he wouldnt be in the UFC still. I think, and Im not bashing him cause I dont know him, but I think people dont like him because of the look on his face. He looks cocky like he thinks hes better then other people.
