Report: Chuck Liddell vs. Rashad Evans UFC 85 fight scrapped

chuck liddell vs rashad evans ufc 85
Former light heavyweight champion, Chuck Liddell, has been forced to withdraw from his upcoming main event fight against Rashad Evans at UFC 85 in London, England, on June 7 because of an injury sustained during training, according to MMARated.com.

Here's a snip:

"No word on the extent of the injury and how long he will be out but plans are for both men to face each other later in the summer."

"Iceman" was originally scheduled to duke it out with Mauricio "Shogun" Rua at the O2 Arena; however, an injury to the Brazilian sidelined him and "Sugar" stepped in.

More on this breaking news in a bit.

I’m not sure I want to see this fight happen. I love the Iceman, but not sure if Rashad can hang with him.

Iceman wasn’t hurt….He was afraid of Rashad kicking his azz.

HOLY CRAP!! What the hell do they do for a main event now? Who’s available?

they need to make anderson defend his title against Okami.

I went for Jardine last time and I would have gone for Rashad in this one.

wow, what do they do now?? that was a weak ass main event to begin with…hey, didn’t hackleman say he didn’t want chuck to fight in england?? is this a real injury??

by kevin on Apr 21, 2008 4:36 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I’m with you Kevin. Chuck and Hackleman DO NOT want to fight in England. I mean, they won’t even fight on the East Coast, never mind overseas. Chuck Liddell fights in Las Vegas or California.

I got an idea for the Main Event. Davis vs Swick or Werdum vs Vera and keep the card as is, but instead, make it an Ultimate Fight Night for free on Spike.

not even as good as TUF finale!!

by kevin on Apr 21, 2008 5:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

ViloentMike,

With the current weak dollar and piss poor exchange rate, I don’t think Zuffa can eat the cost of this as a free tv event.

by Jeff on Apr 21, 2008 7:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yeah Jeff, but a weak card=no buys or tickets sold, so they got to do something. But that said, this is/was a weak card from the begining. How bow Quarry/Bisping??

The rest of us can’t afford the gas/petrol to drive to a sports bar.

by PW on Apr 21, 2008 11:55 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

My thoughts exactly. I dont think Chuck is injured, he just does not like fighting outside of Las Vegas! Who knows what the hell they are going to do now. If Chuck really isnt injured then i will be pissed because he should have pulled out of the fight a long time ago, giving Dana more time to find a suitable main event replacement.

I have no idea what they are going to do, but they have to do something because they are loosing $ in England. They need to find away to get a mian event on that card that people will be excited about.

by john on Apr 21, 2008 7:37 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Alright for you to say… i’ve already got my ticket :(

They need a main event asap, Nog vs Randy!! I can dream.

http://mmamania.com/2008/01/31/chuck-liddell-possibly-fighting-shogun-rua-next/

Convenient injury Chuck. He never wanted to fight in the UK anyway. A good ply to try and get Rampage but in reality he does not even desrve a shot at Rampage. 1-2 in his last 3. But what Chuck wants Dana will give him. Dana for some reason says that “everyone” wants to see Chuck and Rampage go at it again. Rampage pummeled him in Pride and the UFC. You’re yesterdays news Chuck. Deal with it.

good then when the iceman recovers he can get shogun!! i wasn’t going to pay to see chuck whip evan’s ass around the octagon anyways. but i will pay to see chuck and shogun fight. this was a blessing in disguise y’all…

by CBfighter on Apr 21, 2008 4:41 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

if that does happen, then you are right! But its reported that Chuck vs. Evans will happen later on in the summer.

What the UFC should do is just add Chuck vs. Rashad as the co main event to the Rampage vs. Forrest card. Affliction is rumored to be putting on a mOnster card around the time of UFC 86, so maybe they should add that fight to UFC 86 card, and make that a super stacked card to compete with Afflictions Monster card.

I hope that eventually I get to see Chuck vs. Shogun….I have been dreaming about this fight for about 4 years now….Make it happen!

by john on Apr 21, 2008 7:41 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

There are some really good undercard fights, but they are all undercard fights. Chuck/Rashad was a Main Card b/c Rashad was just filling in and I think that had the two originally been penciled to fight, it would have been an undercard or co-main, not a main event.

The question still is, what the hell do they do now?

by freddy on Apr 21, 2008 4:43 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

wow that card does not look very good now wow they need to find a big fight and fast

by Sleepin'Bear on Apr 21, 2008 7:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Please Dana, this card was gonna be huge with Liddell V shogun, then was gonna be decent enough with Liddell V evans, it won’t be worth the £300 I spent on my tickets for a main event of Verdum Vs Vera! Please Dava, give us GSP Vs Jon Fitch!!!!

by GSPvFitch on Apr 21, 2008 4:51 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

GSP vs Fitch would be awesome and sooner than expected if it gets puts on this card. An Anderson Silva fight would also save this card. Serra vs Hughes would also be awesome, but that might be too soon for Serra. Maybe the UFC will resign Arlovski and then they can throw him on the card against someone like Mir for #1 contender cuz a year ago they did say if Arlovski beat Werdum he’d be in title contention.

Actually the changed the main event of the TUF Finale. The main event is now Tanner vs. Grove. Luigi vs. Diego is still on the card but they switched witch fight was the main event…Not a big deal…Does it really matter?

Personally I think Penn – Sherk should be dropped back 2 weeks.

Get a title in there somehow! Anderson is always down and Big Nog aint doing shit! Mir/Nog or Silva/Okami!! Scrap evens completely as the main event and go with something that matters! I think there is plenty of time if they announce it NOW to give the fightes time.

… Everybody said the same thing about Jardine fighting Chuck… Hey anybody remember how that one ended up??? Chuck is a wash up. Done. Nadda. Shogun would dismantle him. Rashad would beat him too, he knows how to seeing how he trains with Keith Jardine, and Jardine beat him with ease.

by theoneandonly on Apr 21, 2008 5:08 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Well….do you remember what everybody said about Shogun vs Forrest?

by Greggo on Apr 21, 2008 5:20 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Jardine did not beat Chuck with ease. It took a fantastic game plan and he won a close decision. Jardine also has very unconventional striking. Rashad, on the other had, has wrestling and powerful, but mediocre striking. Even with a great game plan, I don’t think Rashad will beat Chuck. Look what Chuck did to Tito and Randy, both fighters with similar styles to Rashad, at least where a fight plan with Chuck is concerned. I mean, I agree, CHuck is certainly past his prime and has always seemed a bit over-hyped, but he’s certainly still one of the top in the division.

by Brandon on Apr 21, 2008 6:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Tha only way they can save this card is to put either Anderson Silva vs Yushin Okami, Rashad Evans vs Dan Henderson, or Frank Mir vs Big Nog.

I dont know about the Big Nog vs Mir because they will be fighting after TUF 8 IMO… Florian vs Huerta will be in August… That fight is to important for such short notice. Silva vs Okami is to important too.

I can NEVER remember Chuck ever being injured before a fight AND withdrawing due to injury…remember a while back he broke his foot or something but he still fought Babalu and KO’d him…this is either really serious injury to his knee or shoulder or he just doesnt want to waste his time fighting Rashad since a win doesnt do anything for his “aging quickly self”

by Chadx23 on Apr 21, 2008 5:48 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I’m starting to think he must have had a bad injury…why would he go to England to promote the fight and all that BS just to fake an injury to get out of it…it makes sense, he’s getting older, injuries happen more often when you train like that at 38 years old and supposedly Chuck has problems with his knees and shoulders anyway

I think Chuck backed out,not a injury.Because of 1 person,KIMBO, he’s comming, yes we will see it.KIMBO vs. CHUCK. that will not happen if he looses to Evens. That shows me he is scared and he will not risk the chance of a younger, better conditioned fighter beating him. What a PUSSY. Earn it CHUCK. You are not as good as you were 2 years ago.

Your wrong in so many ways… starting with the spelling but i won’t get into that.

How is evAns always an underdog? Er vs Bisping he was the favourite, vs Salmon he was the favourite, vs Lambert he was the favourite, vs Bonner he was the favourite.

Oh you must mean that he was in the Heavyweight TUF, wow that guy is always up against it, a lot of heavyweight talent came from that show!

Kimbo – just signed a new deal with Elite and is headlining the CBS card, oh and Dana doesn’t want him.

Chuck being a pussy – Don’t think so, i’m not the biggest chuck fan but he has never hidden from anyone. He even went over to hunt for Wandy in Pride when he was in his prime.

Think thats about it, please shut up.

Heavy Weight Unification Bout!! Nogueira vs Couture!! Just need to convince Randy. That would be a fight worth seeing. Too bad it’ll never happen, but it’d be great!

GSP/Fitch is possible. GSP didn’t get banged up and I’m sure that Fitch would be ready to go by then.

Why are people talking about Bisping filling in when he DROPPED A WEIGHT CLASS?

Hendo is a possibility since he’s stated he doesn’t know or care which weight class he’ll be fighting at…the middleweight title is tied up right now because nobody knows who is next in line and Okami’s hand is broke, and the heavyweight title and division is in shambles…who wants to see Nog vs. Werdum? So, basically…they’re screwed.

They should sign Arlovski and have him against Nog! That should’ve already been done, I have no clue what they are waiting for. They could also put the GSP/Fitch title fight on there as well. GSP loves getting back in that octagon so I doubt he would mind a 2 month turnaround. Either that or Silva and Okami plus Nog/Arlovski. And Rashad should go back to fighting Thiago. You are not as good as you were 2 years ago

did you read the post dude? Chuck vs Rashad is still going down, just not in June…it says the two will fight later this summer chill out and quit trash talking…It would be a miracle is Rashad made it past the first round, his only chance was/is lay and pray

MATT HAMILL
STEPHAN BONNAR
THIAGO SILVA

hopefully, one of those three…

by Sean on Apr 21, 2008 7:55 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I’d like to see Bonner vs. Evens.Ya what a idea. I’ll take Evens(KO).

WHAT DO YOU THINK ABOUT JAMES IRVIN OR THIAGO SILVA STEP IN TO FIGHT RASHAD? HOW ABOUT MATT HAMMIL?

by goreman on Apr 21, 2008 7:58 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Hammel vs.Evens would be GREAT. Two all american wrestlers.I’ll take Evens.

mir/nog is the only fight i see possible and main event worthy, thank god this fight was scrapped, it was a waste of a main event, if you aint got a belt you aint got main event status, not even chuck, come on Dana stop trying to push chuck on us, i hope rampage kicks his ass again if they meet again. Put his one punch KO power on an undrcard and be done with it, just not a main event is all and im stoked its not gonna happen, find something good Joe Silva!!!!!!!!!!

by ( (Adam G) ) on Apr 21, 2008 7:59 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

no more rashad main event period!!!! Please find a completely different fight!!!!!!!!!! One thats worth main event status!! UFC has gotten use to huge cards since late 07 andcant stop this train now!! Make this into a positve, Huerta/Florian would be decent, that or Mir/Nog!

by ( (Adam G) ) on Apr 21, 2008 8:02 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Mir. vs. Nog would be worth it.

by iagoof22 on Apr 21, 2008 8:59 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Why not Mir Arlovski?

by DB on Apr 21, 2008 9:21 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

joe rogan vs ken flo, winner remains commentator that would be a good main event. who would be with Goldberg though? Matt Hamil doing color commentating. this would be the best main event of the year

by bushswinger on Apr 21, 2008 8:04 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

this card wasn’t great in the first place but now it isn’t even worth watching. rashad isn’t even ready for a main event.

by Mike on Apr 21, 2008 8:09 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

This is so $h!tty. I know Chuck’s not injured (well I reckon he’s not). He just doesn’t want to fight in England, or overseas. Bought my tickets ages ago for this. If I knew the card was going to be such disaster I probably wouldn’t have bought them. I don’t even live in England!

They had better move Wandy and Jardine to 85. I could tolerate that.

by RobH86 on Apr 21, 2008 8:15 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Let Evans fight someone else, no one gives a crap to “wait” for this matchup…Evans was a replacement after all.

PS- Got ALL the fights from UFC 83 on my blog, check it out

Evens vs Hammel. Lets WRESTLE.

by iagoof22 on Apr 21, 2008 8:36 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

This card was very weak to begin with, now it is extremely weak.

This better be free, I really doubt they can find a main event status card right now to save this card from being extremely weak.

by "Mr. NC-17" on Apr 21, 2008 8:36 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

thats good, so we can wait for shogun & liddell to recover so the fight that has planned before “a real main event against shogun & not this against rashad” will going to happen, but we have just to wait..

by mad_drummer on Apr 21, 2008 8:39 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Thank god. Hendo should move back up. Bonnar vs Evans 2 could be cool. Or better move Thiago Silva to that card to beat up Rashad.

by nick on Apr 21, 2008 8:50 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Good because Evans tried to cuddle Bisping for 2 rounds does that make you deserve a shot at Chuck? NO!

by Tony on Apr 21, 2008 8:59 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

by Tony on Apr 21, 2008 9:01 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

id like to see Evans vs hendo or hamill
hendos been losing but just look at his old fights
hamill almost deserves it after that bisping fight he got ripped

by damon on Apr 21, 2008 9:26 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I know your not knocking Hendo, but look at the last two fights Hendo has fought in the UFC.

Rampage Jackson, Anderson Silva.

Henderson should fight Rashad Evans, it is a highly marketable name in Henderson, and it is introducing a true contender to 205 in Rashad Evans.

by "Mr. NC-17" on Apr 21, 2008 9:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

yah ur right , and besides hendo needs to fight his way up if he would ever want to fight evans even know he has some great victorys he just lost to main events
im not relly a evans fan i like hendo a little im just curious who should fight him
i whould also like to see hamill fight evans but hamill hasent erend it yet who do you think evans is gonna fight at 85

by damon on Apr 21, 2008 10:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Rashad vs Lyoto Machida maybe? What about the other Silva? What’s his first name again. Put him up against Jardine maybe?

by dave on Apr 21, 2008 9:47 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

that’s true grab hendo vs evans

i don’t see them taking mir out he is already booked in july and i for one has already paid to see that fight. i can come up with maybe lesnar vs coleman, push it to june, or sign arlovski and get him to fight big nog for championship. i doubt silva will fight okami okami has a busted hand. truly they are screwed, everyone is fighting right now, besides hughes, if you could get hughes vs karo. i personnal think that cause gsp saved the fight, and hughes purse, i think hughes should step up now, return the favor.
another out of the park thing is to sign a big name like barnett vs arlovski but i think barnett is fighting in may already, this is what happens when you put all your eggs in one basket, no reason to have tito vs machida, silva vs jardine, and bj vs sherk. they should have had two and moved the other to june. way to go joe silva i ought to take your job

by bryant on Apr 21, 2008 9:48 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

yah hendo might not belong in a main event yet but who know joe silva lets any one step up for a main event did it befor

by damon on Apr 21, 2008 11:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

In my opinion anderson silva should come as a major fight against paulão son of elitexc.
So the event was at a level much higher than with liddell

by Colin D on Apr 21, 2008 11:20 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Guess Chuck is hitting the sauce again.

Hope if his plan was to fake an injury to get another title shot that he gets another left hook to the face.

Thiago Silva or even Machida vs the winner of Rampage/Forrest would be better anyways.

Nogueira Is not a Possibility . the one and only who can save this with something honorable Is the good bye from UFC to RANDY . But he Is just talking and Talking . . If randy can defeat BIGNOG could be ready to fight fedor . . If fedor defeat Sylvia . We have a Justify to see The best fight of all history!! But Randy Is too much stubborn . He thinks All has to be as he wants . . Please . Hear me!!!

Come on . Save this decently!!

info on chucks injury

“Unfortunately, Chuck Liddell tore his right hamstring during training last week, and being the warrior that he is, he still wanted to fight, which is the reason why everyone in the world loves him,”

“But I wouldn’t let anyone fight with his leg looking that way. Let him heal and come back and fight when he is 100 percent.”

“We’re adding fights to the card and rearranging it so the UK fans won’t have to worry, we’ll still be bringing an amazing card to London and the O2 Arena. The UFC always delivers.

by BLOodyMEss on Apr 22, 2008 1:53 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Meant Silva

by Gary on Apr 22, 2008 9:05 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

James would get the crap pounded out off him if he fought rashad. Irvin doesn’t have good take down defense and got GnPed badly by terry martin in round 1 on there fight, now imagine what a big stronger wrestler could do.

by alex on Apr 22, 2008 2:42 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think Hendo should be put in the card. He could fight in either MW or LHW.
Hendo vs Evans
Hendo vs Bisping
Hendo vs Franklin

Id prefer to see the second fight myself and then the winner fight Franklin and winner gets Silva or Okami (Most likely Silva).

by JJ on Apr 22, 2008 2:51 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

its gonna be…. (with 4 more fights to be added)
main event
BISPING vs LEBEN

main card
IRVINE vs EVANS
VERA vs WERDUM
SWICK vs DAVIS
MARQUARDT vs LEITES

Preliminary card
KAMPMANN vs RIVERA
LAMBERT vs CANE
CARNEIRO vs (someone)
LIAUDIN vs TAYLOR
WILMAN VS TAVARES
