Matt Hughes: Matt Serra fight possible in 'six to eight months'

Props: Matt-Hughes.com

Quoteworthy:

"GSP had a good game plan to take Matt Serra down and wear him out. I found myself rooting for Serra at the end of the second round, I wanted him to make it to the third round. I thought if it would get to the third round GSP would decide to stand up with him and possibly knock him out. I just wanted Matt to get beat on for five rounds, not just two; but I knew the ref was about ready to stop it. The UFC said that if Serra loses I get him, but I don't know when that will be. I'm going to guess six to eight months, so I've found myself watching my diet and exercising more."

Former welterweight champion Matt Hughes shares his thoughts on the fight this weekend between Georges St. Pierre and Matt Serra at UFC 83: "Serra vs. St. Pierre 2" at the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec. Serra's loss more than likely earned him a fight with Hughes — the two opposing coaches on season six of The Ultimate Figher (TUF) were supposed to fight at UFC 79: "Nemesis" in December 2007. However, Serra had to withdraw from the bout because of a back injury sustained during training.

this fight my friend could headline a UFN or be co main event on a monster card hell it could even be a main event

by hector on Apr 21, 2008 4:18 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

not a main event, even though hughes will train hard for this one, you need a good card with it. Or add it to the weak ass lesner card in aug, then you got 2 fights to hype. but in the fall you could have it as an under fight to BJ/GSP, setting up a serra gsp fight in NY

Serra-GSP III in Madison Square Garden would be huge.

Serra has no business ever getting into the octagon with GSP Again… He proved that he is nowhere near in the same league as St. Pierre is… No disrespect intended but as I said before that if they fought 100 times Serra may win 3-5 of them and I highly doubt that many to be honest….

Hughes/Serra could easily main event a Fight Night or TUF Finale. Probably not a PPV though, on PPV it could be a decent co-main event to a title match maybe.

Hughes will break out the patented SLAM and take Serra to flight school! No way Serra takes this one!

Hughes RNC 1st round get that malook

by ralphie on Apr 21, 2008 4:21 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Should be a good fight. I see it going the distance. I dont see Hughes finishing Serra. As bad as Serra got beat by GSP, I thought he did better than Hughes’ last fight v. GSP

by TC on Apr 21, 2008 4:32 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Matt Serra looked like he through that fight. He did nothing, but talk about a rematch. was this UFC or WWF?

by Beck on Apr 21, 2008 10:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

You mean he looked like the last 14 guys that got man handled by GSP and looked like they were in their first career fight?

by GSP4Prez on Apr 22, 2008 4:31 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

ok i know that u guys are going to say i’m crazy for this but…

serra will distroy hughes!!! they both just got distroyed by gsp, but i think serra is better at recovering from defeats than hughes. it looked like the loss to gsp didn’t crush serra, i’m sure he’s pissed, but hughes was thinking about retirement after his loss to gsp. so mentally i will give this one to serra.

please serra use some of ur submission skills!! ur my boy but ur a fuckin retard. if ur a gracie black belt, then why can’t u submit anyone!! renzo should kick serra’s ass for being sooo fuckin dumb!

by CBfighter on Apr 21, 2008 4:37 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

lets not get sucked into the mental shit again. I agree serra will win, but it will be a good fight

by kevin on Apr 21, 2008 4:47 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think hughes will take this one but i think it will be a close fight but hughes wil take it i think via ground and pound and some great slams

by Canadian crippler on Apr 21, 2008 4:43 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Matt hughes is a piece of shit bully, i dont recall matt serra making fun of him when he was getting his arm ripped out, he only stated how good gsp is.

by Dan on Apr 21, 2008 4:54 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

He’s a bully? These are grown men paid to beat the crap out of other grown men, that are also paid to beat the crap…ugh, never mind.

by Jrandolph on Apr 21, 2008 8:30 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

A good fight that has to happen but whoever said that it could lead to GSP/Serra 3 . . . What the hell for, are you nuts . . . Thats probably the first thing Serra said to GSP when the 2nd one was over “aint gonna be no rematch, champ” There is no need for Serra and GSP to ever meet in the octagon again, thats like tito and ken fighting again . . . This battle is over, checkmate, Pierre. But we are all one step closer to the fight that actually matters . . . Duhn Duhn DUHNNNNNNNN . . . GSP/PENN II!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by ( (Adam G) ) on Apr 21, 2008 4:56 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

god I want that fight.

by Brandon on Apr 21, 2008 6:36 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

do you want to explain to me why there shouldnt be a third fight? Serra dominated the first fight and st.pierre dominated the second fight.

by matt on Apr 21, 2008 11:16 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

For sure that will be a sick fight. Penn is the only guy to ever give GSP a competitive fight. I mean Hughes caught him in an armbar with 1 second to go and Serra knocked him out but both guys were getting dominated before that but BJ fought him close the whole way. If BJ can come in shape a 5 round fight with GSP would be a great one to watch. I think GSPs strength advantage and domianting wreslting which has improved immensly since their first fight would prove the difference but it would still be a great one to watch.

by GSP4Prez on Apr 22, 2008 4:35 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

GSP/Penn II the only fight that matters? What about GSP Anderson Silva? now that would be a great fight!

by Chris on Apr 23, 2008 3:50 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

how exactly CAN Serra beat Matt Hughes? please, I’m just curious. I honestly 100% can NOT see any way shape or form of how matt fuckin serra can beat him.

by Sparxx on Apr 21, 2008 5:15 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

By getting slammed and landing in a perfect triangle like Nate Diaz did to Pellegrino.

by PW on Apr 21, 2008 6:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Never thought of that.. I agree then that that would be the only way Serra could win. But at the same time, we haven’t seen a Hughes slam since Trigg 2. He single-legged Riggs, didn’t really slam Gracie or Penn, then got the quick takedowns against Lytle. And then the GSP fights, where he didn’t get them at all. Point being, he hasn’t SLAMMED people in a while, but with him being angry at Serra, it could happen. Dont think it will though…

by Sparxx on Apr 21, 2008 7:12 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Who say Serra cant Knock Hughes the F out? Hughes’s stand up is amatuer at best and he punches like a girl…Serra has bricks on his hands…I wouldn’t be shocked if Serra rocked Hughes WORLD!!!

by john on Apr 21, 2008 7:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i agree john, hugheses only chance is his strength and wrestling

by kevin on Apr 21, 2008 7:53 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

serra gsp III would be retarded thats like a franklin silva III the only exception is that serra landed a one in a million knockout the first time

by realufcinfo on Apr 21, 2008 5:16 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i mean, before the TUF 4, if UFC put serra vs hughes, how many of these serra fans (if they even existed) would see Hughes losing to him?

by Sparxx on Apr 21, 2008 5:16 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

point being, serra’s win over gsp was a fluke, and he (serra) is nothing more than an above average gatekeeper. rematch him against chris lytle after hughes pounds him into oblivion and then get rid of him.

by Sparxx on Apr 21, 2008 5:18 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

agree comepletely

by realufcinfo on Apr 21, 2008 5:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

it wasn’t a fluke, serra has some sick boxing, and heavy hands. gsp didn’t waste anytime taking him to the ground.

in gsp’s last 2 fights he realized he is probably pound for pound the best wrestler in mma, and serra is not that good of a fighter off of his back.

he took serra down, used his wrestling and cardio to wear him down into a gnp victory.

gsp is a better more complete fighter. but his striking style doesn’t bode well for him against matt serra’s

by mike on Apr 21, 2008 7:00 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with Sparxx and Realufcinfo. It was a fluke. I don’t know how you can say serra has some sick boxing after seeing him throw a few reckless punches and land one. And if he really had that heavy of hands GSP would have gone down after the first one not the next 6. Serra lost to shoney carter, barely beat chris lytle who is average at best and got man handled by hughes, and not only did gsp out wrestle serra, he proved his striking dominance in the 2nd round with the 6 jabs in a row he landed easily. And i dont know if im the only one to catch this, but i dont think serra hit him once standing up, all of the punches and one kick were blocked or dodged……yea thats some great boxing, eating jabs and missing punches.

by Chris on Apr 23, 2008 3:59 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

matt serra talks a good game but hes not a killer all bark no bite, matt hughes is a little soft now not the same finisher he used to be, they both need to stop being gay, it should be a good fight but could end up being one of those fights that are better on paper , serra is the typical bjj guy who has been doing it so long he wants to stand and trade now when he should be grappleing, we know hughe is gonna try to pick him up and slam him on his head ,serra well have no choice but submit or quit

by gbwarrior on Apr 21, 2008 5:21 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I am a fan of both Serra and Hughes. I also know it is difficult to gauge the outcome of a fight by comparing common opponents. Hughes has awesome wrestling and great strength. But, I think Hughes’ strengths play into Serra’s strengths — bjj and stand-up. That is why I think the fight will be close.

by TC on Apr 21, 2008 5:26 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I’d rather see Koscheck v. Hughes.

by TC on Apr 21, 2008 5:29 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

matt serra is not good off his back. hes too short.

if hughes stands with serra, he will get beaten terribly.

if hughes takes serra down, he will either win a decision or win by tko, or pounding into a rear naked.

serra might be able to reverse or switch a hughes take down or move on the ground, but i don’t see serra being able to shoot in and put hughes on his back.

by mike on Apr 21, 2008 6:53 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

You have to put that one on FREE TV

by iagoof22 on Apr 21, 2008 6:53 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

win or lose Serra will just be happy to get to hit Hughes. ima go with Serra on this one

by GSP still sucks on Apr 21, 2008 6:54 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

This fight isn’t as big a mismatch as some people think. Three or four years ago when Hughesus H. Christ was in his prime it would have been, but not now. I’d love for Serra to beat him down, then slap on a choke or an armbar.

by PW on Apr 21, 2008 7:11 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I couldn’t agree more.

by Fidel Cashflow on Apr 21, 2008 8:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ya I see Serra big time. Hughes, Chuck, Couture(??), They are old and time for new guys. Don’t underestimate age.GO BROCK!!!

by iagoof22 on Apr 21, 2008 8:29 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

This is a very tough match-up for Serra, but yet, unlike GSP, Matt Hughes is a very one sided fighter. He wants to take you down then pound you. Should be a lot easier to prepare for.

by "Mr. NC-17" on Apr 21, 2008 8:34 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Seriously guys? Serra/GSP III, enough already.

by Jrandolph on Apr 21, 2008 8:34 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

really also want to see hughes vs koschek too. bring in the new gaurd.

by tt on Apr 21, 2008 8:35 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

let me guess winner fights gsp again and again and again, stop it already give Finch the shot he deserves

by AJ on Apr 21, 2008 8:36 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I’d love to see one or both of these guys show a little class to eachother. They’re both quality fighters and I think it’s a good match-up. I just don’t see how you can count out someone that’s as good at bjj as Serra. You never know when he might slip one on.

by dave on Apr 21, 2008 9:42 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Kos and hughes fa sho….Fitch deserves a shot but its not a very good match-up for Fitch…Good wrestling cant beat a great wrestler

by jintao on Apr 21, 2008 9:45 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Enough HUGHES, he cann’t hang with the best anymore. I can name 6 fights I’d rather see than anything with HUGHES.

by iagoof22 on Apr 21, 2008 10:57 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Let’s see how Serra ducks this one.

by FCfightfan on Apr 21, 2008 11:14 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I wasn’t a fan of Serra before the GSP fight but he really went up in my estimations with the way he handled himself after the fight. Classy in defeat when he could have run his mouth again and make excuses.

Before GSP – Serra I would have picked Hughes over Serra, now im definatley wanting Serra to win.

by UKmmaBOY on Apr 22, 2008 3:39 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Hughes will follow GSP’s game plan and take Serra down and just outwrestle and GNP. He definitely won’t be stupid enough to stand up with Serra. Hughes is the better wrestler and more powerful. Serra just has a better stand up game and BJJ which we haven’t seen him use to his full capability. I’d go with Hughes on this one and then he’ll just retire after the win. Serra was a fluke.

by vin on Apr 22, 2008 6:21 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I think Hughes will submit Serra via a deep wedgie.

by DrPepper on Apr 22, 2008 8:17 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

matt hughes via whoop ass 1:40secs i like serra but i dont think his jits is where it could be i dont know if he has the right caliber of jits training partners, is he still training under renzo for these matches or is he going at it with his students cause he looked like shit all defense no ofense from the bottom find your inner jiu and jitsu somebody

by gbwarrior on Apr 22, 2008 10:34 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I never thought I’d be saying this, but I’m routing for hughes. According to mmaweekly.com serra is No. 2 in the world. For the sake of reality, I hope he falls to No. 20 within the next year. Goodbye mouth.
