It's right here ... and it doesn't get much prettier -- "Short Fuse" gets simultaneously strangled and pounded. Pure ownage.

saw the end of this fight, looked good, sick triangle from the top!! would have bee better than starnes. Did any of you guys here starnes’ reasoning for that??? pretty pathetic/

UFC cut Starnes contract today because of his performance said Dana White…
by Shaolins Finest on Apr 21, 2008 3:00 PM EDT up reply actions
His contract was already up. I’m sure that Dana will PR spin as much as he can, though.
by freddy on Apr 21, 2008 3:44 PM EDT up reply actions
I missed his reasoning. What did the Noodle say? This I have to hear.
Also, I am sick of all this talk about Travis Lutter? He has been over hyped for some time now? What makes him the best ju jitsu fighter in the middleweight division? Who says he is better on the ground than Maia, Almeida, Leites? This guy is a bum! I say it all the time. I feel bad for those who bet money on him this past weekend, he is a joke of a competitor! This guy has the conditioning of a 350 lb heavyweight! What a joke! Zuluzhino might have better conditioning than Lutter! He is pathetic and hopefully the UFC will stop over hyping him like he is some kind of top 10 middlewieight because he is far from that!
Also, Lutter does not like to get hit in the face, which is a problem! I had to sit through a week of Lutter interviews, running his mouth about Anderson Silva….what a joke!
If that fight took place in Pride, lutter would have gotten his face Soccer Kicked OFF by Franklin. Throughout the entire fight Lutter was on his knees trying to grab a hold of Franklins Toes! He looked like “the entertainer” shoving New Yorks mouth in his foot.
Like I suspected this card was a joke. It was a bunch of mis match fights involving a true fighter vs. guys that dont belong in the UFC. Hopefully we never see Kalib, Tuppaware, Lutter never again fight on a main card of a UFC pay per view.
When Goulet vs. hironoaka is the fight of the night…Its a crappy card! What a joke of an event!… Happy to get that crap out of the way, now we can start talking about a real event….UFC 84!

semi agree john, next month on paper is a monster card…hope it lives up to it. BJ, Silva and tito win!!
by kevin on Apr 21, 2008 3:27 PM EDT up reply actions
You are dillusional if you think Tito is beating Machida!
No worries, UFC 84 will more than live up to the hype!
I want to see Lutter fight either Almeida, Leites, Maia so they can show him what brazilian Ju JItsu is all about.

Have you been holding that in all weekend John? Let it out. Write UFC 83 on a brick and throw it in a river. Did wonders for St Pierre.

Sucks to be Ed Herman. Short Fuse/Short of Breath.

Wow, that was amazing!!! I knew he was gonna beat Herman but he really demoralized him there.
by Ballam on Apr 21, 2008 3:08 PM EDT reply actions
Ed can’t fight against people who at BJJ. Check out his losses. He just about lost to El Dirte but was saved by the Bell. Demaia looks good he could climb the latter fast.
by Mr. Jitters on Apr 21, 2008 3:12 PM EDT reply actions
Ladder I mean. Shoot. I was suggesting Bisping vs Quarry but Demaia vs Bisping would be good as well. The count needs a test.

Bisbing-vs-Franklin will be about the biggest test he will get at the moment.
by Flow with the go on Apr 22, 2008 4:43 AM EDT up reply actions
Poor Short Fuse! He was on such a high from getting his first KO. But Mr. Jitters is right. He’s not good at sub def. Maybe something he should take a look at.
by Big Jake on Apr 21, 2008 3:15 PM EDT reply actions
Its just a triangle from top position. He also had an armbar there if he wanted it but he Demian chose to pound him out instead. Kind of a nasty choice.
I couldn’t see how Ed got into that position but it happens a lot when people try to stack a triangle but get their leg hooked or swept instead, landing on their back. Very bad position.
by bostonmmajunkie on Apr 21, 2008 3:20 PM EDT reply actions
great choice IMO..would have been better if UFC showed it to us!

by UKmmaBOY on Apr 21, 2008 3:29 PM EDT up reply actions
This is the SECOND time Ed “Step child” Herman has been choked into unconsciousness…Joe Macdonald laid him out and RNC him until it was nighty night.
This guy needs to learn to tap – id rather walk away from a loss than to wake up surrounded by medical personel with sniffing salt
Going to sleep or getting KTFO is way more embarassing than tapping – at least you have some control
by jerrolds on Apr 21, 2008 3:28 PM EDT reply actions
WHAT!!!! getting ko-ed or put to sleep is more embarassing than tapping? no it’s not. fighters…..REAL fighters fight til the end.

Like Marlon Sims?! Bwahahahah
REAL Fighters tap to fight another day. This is a professional sport and getting SEVERLY injured due to pride is retarded at best.
Passing out due to lack of oxygen to the brain is lethal – and a triangle choke is a blood choke and profesionals have died from this.

anyone besides me impressed with how bisping looked. Yes, tupperware sucks, but he looked crisp and quick as well as in great shape. Put him against Frankliin. As far as ACE goes, how did he get out of that arm bar? Even my wife (who has trained bjj for years) was amazed. should Lutter have broke it instead of holding it??? I give props to franklin for that!
by kevin on Apr 21, 2008 3:35 PM EDT reply actions
Franlin would be TOO big of a test for Bisping. Bisping is well on his way to winning some fans back with his performance over the weekend, but it doesn’t deem him worthy of Ace just yet in my opinion. Rich and Dan Henderson MUST fight each other. This was a known fact for years, back when Hendo was Pride 183lb champ and Rich was UFC 185lb champ. Chuck needed to fight Wanderlei. Hendo vs Franklin needs to happen. And Fedor vs Randy, DON’T GET ME STARTED! And I’ll settle for BJ’s 2003 submission win over Gomi. Don’t need to see that one again to believe that it will happen 99 times out of 100.
by ViolentMike on Apr 21, 2008 4:06 PM EDT up reply actions
Yeah, rich/henderson, give bisping leben winner takes winner then the winner gets killed by the spider
by kevin on Apr 21, 2008 4:11 PM EDT up reply actions
Sounds good. Now we just need to work the winner of Cote and Almeida into the mix.
by ViolentMike on Apr 21, 2008 5:10 PM EDT up reply actions
I am a Leites fan as well, but his 3 UFC wins are against Ryan Jensen, Floyd Sword, and Pete Sell. Are any of the scrubs still in the UFC????
Leites is no where near the title picture at 185.
by ViolentMike on Apr 22, 2008 10:06 AM EDT up reply actions
That was sweet BJJ work by Rich. It was similar to how Matt Serra got out of a Karo Parisyan armbar attempt.
by Pat on Apr 21, 2008 5:20 PM EDT up reply actions
GSP has a pre-fight ritual that he’s discussed in the past. When in the cage before the fight he takes a sip of water and then spits it out into the air like a geyser basically covering him in a thick mist. At UFC 83 he even rubbed his legs to make sure he got full coverage.
I know any form of lubrication (i.e.: vaseline) is illegal….but is water? Serra even said in post fight interviews that he tried to work subs early but GSP was too slippery (“I wanted to work submissions, he was just too slippery.”). IMO GSP gets a huge advantage from this. I’m not saying the fight would have gone differently though.
___________
by kevin on Apr 21, 2008 3:37 PM EDT reply actions
A “thick mist”? I don’t know about that. After 1 minute of working in a fight I’m pretty sure that any water you might have spat on yourself is completely overcome by the sweat. Slipperiness is something that bjj artists need to deal with. It doesn’t take long to get sweaty out there.
by dave on Apr 21, 2008 3:46 PM EDT up reply actions
that wasn’t me saying it, read an article, cut and pasted it
by kevin on Apr 21, 2008 3:52 PM EDT up reply actions
AFAIK putting water on yourself is not illegal. I always see fighters pour water on themselves. I also don’t think there is a rule that says you have to towel off after you warm-up. I think water and sweat are fair game.
And actually, water (or any lubrication) can work against you if it’s on your head and neck because it makes it easier for someone to slip in a guillotine or other chokes against you. BJ Penn and Randy Couture have stated this before. BJ Penn especially loves working in a RNC on a bloodied opponent.
by Pat on Apr 21, 2008 5:27 PM EDT up reply actions
I’d be seeing that in my nightmares for a long time if I were Herman.
It almost seemed unfair. How do you even tap? You can’t even verbally tap because you’re being choked. And even if you weren’t being choked, you’re eating some other guys’ fists.
by dave on Apr 21, 2008 3:43 PM EDT reply actions
You can tap out of this sub because the triangle only immobilizes one arm. Also you can tap with the trapped arm, both legs, verbal …
by bostonmmajunkie on Apr 21, 2008 3:49 PM EDT up reply actions
Tap with a leg? Wouldn’t that be kicking? LOL
“OH, but wouldn’t tapping with a hand be punching?” Well, not really. I know I have much better “tapping control” over my hands than I do my feet. For example, tap your hand on the desk. Now tap the floor with your foot. Hand is easier. LOL

well congrads to Maia for beating a very tough Ed Herman…was a huge risk for Short Fuse to take on such an accomplished bjj mma fighter and he knew it…but felt he could win the fight…no shame in loosing to such an accomplished fighter and great gains if he pulled out the win…to comment by jerrolds (above) you are pussy…a real fighter like Ed would not risk a potential career ending injury and probably would tap to avoid it…but…he will fight until he cant..i.e…passed out …unconscious…because he has the heart and will of a true Fighter…give props where they’re due dude…just hope the UFC appreciates a true competitor…who brings his best effort to every fight…

Maia, as I have been saying since he was called to face Jensen in the UFC 77 event, that this kid was the real deal. He has good stand-up and incredible BJJ. Nobody can beat this guy on the ground, NOBODY.
I would love to see a Henderson vs. Maia match-up.

That choke was great.
I love when a fighter is beating on his opponant even when the submission hold is in tight…Kind of like Anderson with the triangle’ while elbowing the head on Lutter…
Shows how dominant of a fighter you are..How you are always working and trying to finish no matter what..

Maia is a crazy motherfucker.
by Stagger-Lee on Apr 22, 2008 11:32 AM EDT up reply actions
Also if someone could inform Mike Goldberg that not tapping does not show great courage, that would be good
by Bungs Tavern on Apr 22, 2008 11:22 AM EDT reply actions
If you watch the fight, Herman was doing well, pounding Maia, and Maia looked like he was starting to gas. He then caught Herman in a beautiful triangle when Herman was on top. Herman tried to roll out of it but ended up on the bottom in mount, and the rest is history. The way Maia slipped the triangle on though was very very slick!
Having said that, seeing how he was in a bit of trouble before the submission, makes me think he’s not ready to own the division like some people are suggesting just yet. If Herman had better sub defensive, or just not been caught right there, it would have been too late for Maia, he would be out of gas.
by Mad A on Apr 22, 2008 12:09 PM EDT reply actions
I agree Herman was doing decent, However, Herman does not have good submission defense, check out his other fights, but Maia is on another level with submissions, just like Frank Mir and Big Nog, it doesn’t matter if you take a pounding if you can submit someone thats all that matters. I agree with what you said in that he isn’t ready for top level, but give him time
by Bungs Tavern on Apr 22, 2008 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions
how much do you suppose the ufc organization profited in the fight…and how much do you think the fighters shared in these profits %age wise…I hope the UFC takes care of the young men who are largely responsible for their income…I think thats why some of the older wiser fighters ie. Catoure, Ortiz, Lindland….protest the compensation to the fighters…the UFC has the opportunity to be the frontrunner of MMA organizations and I hope they don’t blow it by starving the participants that attract their gate….you know the old saying…“you’re only as good as the people you employ”…keep the best fighters in the UFC ….take good care of your fighters and they will take good care of you! Dontcha THINK !
