Kalib Starnes can run like the wind blows!

A great night of fights took place last night at UFC 83: "Serra vs. St. Pierre 2;" however, Kalib Starnes apparently didn't get the memo.

Watched the event live at home in Plymouth (England) (at a shocking time of day) and was disgusted by this muppets antics! This guy has no pride, if he came to Plymouth and asked for a fight and ran away, everyone would chase him down and beat the crap out of the pussy!!!! If i see his name on a fight card again, I’ll be sure not purchase the ppv…shocking!!!

I didn’t get a chance to watch the event but from the short clip its apparent that Kalib is SCARED of fighting, that performance should never allow him back into the octagon.

Starns got his strategy from Mark Hominick (vs George Gurgel at UFN 5). Also its a given there is always at least one sucky fight every PPV.
by The_Mexicutioner on Apr 20, 2008 2:46 PM EDT reply actions
Big difference – Hominick was avoiding take downs and swept Gurgel several times. He used his Muay Thai against a BJJ black belt and beat him fair and square. Get serious, nobody is going to be afraid of Gurgel. Especially after his performance on TUF when he got destroyed by Jason VF and he revealed his serious man crush on Rich Franklin?!?!?!?!?!?

yup, Kalib brought it all on himself…Canadians apreciate true fighters, thats why he got booed, and the American(Quarry) got cheered.
Also, Danzig got cheered and he beat a Canadaian, but the difference is, the fans still cheered Bocek, because he fought a tuff fight, and never quit, until it was over…Kalib quit before the fight started..What a bitch..

I completely agree that it was an extremely poor showing by Kalib. I’m surprised, though, that there isn’t more talk of Quarry’s actions. He displayed a complete lack of class when he taunted Starnes with the running man and the aforementioned “Screech” manuever. I bet if Rogan would have been there, he would have commented on it; certainly not in keeping with the idea of Budo. And then for Quarry to preface some of his comments in the after-fight interview with "no disrespect to Kalib. . . " Left a bad taste in my mouth. I say feed Quarry to Silva; that will teach him some respect.

by D Dub on Apr 20, 2008 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions
I don’t think you can fault Quarry at all for his actions. He’s a professional and came to fight. Kalib Starnes should probably have his purse withheld and read the riot act by Dana White. I’d put him on warning that if he’d pull that crap one more time, his UFC career would be over. Thank you, Nate, for at least making the end of the fight entertaining.
by Wayne on Apr 20, 2008 4:30 PM EDT up reply actions
Why should he have respect for kalib? All he did was run away and Nate was just pointing that out. If Kalib didnt like it then he should of punched him in the head while he was doing the screech or the running man. Nate was trying to put on a show and if Kalib wasnt willing to fight then I say mock all you want.
by BigDaddyDahl on Apr 20, 2008 5:05 PM EDT up reply actions
Lack of class?? You’re not serious. Quarry was trying to bait Starnes into actually fighting. Instead, when he got pissed he still had had the opportunity to punch his opponent but instead he kept running and gives him the finger.
If Starnes goes on to win 100 fights in a row and impresses endlessly, he should still not be allowed back in the octogon.
It was not a lack of class by Quarry but frustration and an attempt to coax action to get people what they paid for. That is why he did it then in retrospect apologized for his actions. And the Rocky speech at the end made it the best post-fight interview of all time.

Look, quarry had ample reason to pull those antics in the first round, but he chose to try and FIGHT. After 3 rounds of not being able to fight, he resorted to the only tactic that might have worked…..belittle the other fighter into putting his purse down, dropping his balls out finally, forgetting his gushing head vag, and fighting back. But Kalib was ‘protesting’ low fighter pay……sure.
“Low class kalib”. It was insulting to see such bull, and even more insulting to hear him come up with some some ‘on-the-fly, think-something-up-so-I-don’t-look-so-bad" excuse. I have not interest in seeing him fight, and since I live in Vancouver, I hope I never runn into him in person, I’m a pretty honest person, but also pretty small. I can definitely right off training at Revolution, Kalib really represented for them poorly. He alienates ATT, then makes his Surrey ifhgt team look soft.

Anyone who faults Quarry in any way shape or form needs to watch that fight again. What do you want him to do? It was like watching Rocky chase the Chicken and he just couldn’t catch him. With a performance like this, at least we know Starnes will be fighting for a title in EliteXC soon.

Great clip! Starnes basically disrespect the sport by that performance…turning his back away from his opponent for taking a jab, wtf…. That home country advantage back fired on him…Got to be more professional than that. That’s what Serra thought Rush would be, overwhelmed of the pressure in front of his home crowd.
Funny though how Nate has the nerve to taunt and talk trash, but he’s the posterboy of getting KTFO..ala Rich Franklin. He’s 36 years old and acted like a 16 year old..frustration I guess for dealing with a puss like Starnes????

I think Quarry looked absolutly incredible last night, and I think a Michael Bisping vs. Nate Quarry match-up really needs to happen, considering they are both in the top 8 middleweights.
Kalib Starnes, had to be hurt, sick, or completely scared, because that was not the Kalib Starnes that I have seen since TUF 3 where he quit in his fight. He did not look confident, and he looked completely shell shocked.

I have to admit, I laughed out loud, but looking back, I think Nate may have taken it a little too far. He seemed a little regretful of his antics after he saw how upset Starnes and his corner were. Funny stuff though. I think there may be more to this story that will come out later. At any rate, expect the UFC to release Starnes from his contract.
by Bob on Apr 20, 2008 3:37 PM EDT reply actions
Neither Starnes nor his corner has any right to be upset at anything Quarry did. The guy was running for his life for 15 minutes, and Quarry called him on it. I credit Quarry for doing everything in his power to entertain the viewers. Unfortunately, it takes two people to have a fight. If Starnes doesn’t like being mocked he can always choose to stand and fight.

This was a great card, and nate quarry wasn’t classless in his actions with the running man and screech. That was pretty funny, and running away is all Kalib frickin’ did for THE WHOLE THREE ROUNDS!!! I don’t blame Quarry a bit.
Another good matchup for Quarry would be Jason MacDonald, who has finished any fighter in the UFC who was NOT a title contender (franklin and okami, two contender worthy fighters, have beat him, while “The Athlete” has FINISHED Herman, Leben, Singer, and now Doerkson). I’d pay to see that interesting fight.

Kalib Starnes needs to be cut from the UFC today! Someone on here says he has no heart, that is a complete understatement, this guy has no spine! To come into a fight and not fight, this guy is here simply to collect a paycheck. Dana cut this coward now and let some hungry real fighter come in. If this were a real world job this slacker would have been fired long ago. I like the fact that he was talking trash to Nate Quarry’s cornerman after the fight and calling him out. Dude, where was that fight the last fifteen minutes?! What a chump, no what a Bitch!
Congratulations to Nate “Rock” Quarry on a great fight and also showing this “wannabe” up and exposing the world, especially his home country, to what a home grown coward really looks like!

Wow…lol…never liked this arrogant piece of sh—t since TUF. The only thing he’s good at is taking a beating, getting injured, and making his opponents look good. Nate is one of my favorite fighters, and for those puss-es out there to take Kalib’s side, you should have your heads checked. Kalib’s is just a jerk who is hated by so many people for his rotten, egotisitical attitude. I remember his last fight where he even cursed out his own corner crew for wanting him to keep fighting when he wanted to quit. The guy hasn’t proven squat in the UFC and is/ hopefully was apparently a top guy on Joe Silva’s list that earned the right to fight Quarry. A pathetic joke this guy is who had the nerve to call out Nate’s corner. Yes Kalib, not everyone has the guts to get in there and fight but apparently, you don’t either, but you seem to get paid for it, so do your f—ing job and entertain us, otherwise…go do some other sh-t with your life.

MMA is has arrived for sure, and now it’s time to weed out fighters like Starnes, Lutter and McCarthy — or at least not put them at the top of a card.
If Dana and other orgs want to continue growing, cards need to be topped with fighters who bring it and don’t gas after one round.

Blame the ufc? Idiot. How are they supposed to know that a fighter is going to perform like that? They are just as perturbed as all the viewers. More so. We could at least get a laugh from Quarry’s taunts. They have to pay Starnes (presumably).
Lutter is an even bigger disappointment though IMO. How could he gas like that after not doing enough cardio last time to make weight? If he had been in shape that would have been a really good fight. Hell, he almost hit the armbar. Too bad he couldn’t make it a fight after the 1st.

I think its discusting, i’m in better shape than him and i do a lot of hours at work and drink a hell of lot of beer!

For anyone saying Quarry was being a fool or disrespectful are idiots. He was merely trying to get Starnes fired up to do something!!! He got a 30-24 ffs! He walked around the ring urkel style and Starnes still ran!! What else could Quarry do?? He pretty much gave Starnes free-will the last ten seconds to do what he wanted to him, and he still ran away. What a fucking joke. He literally looked like he was someone that was pulled out of the crowd and was trying to survive the clock. He knew he was losing that fight in the second round, and still did nothing to change that. Starnes can give me 1/5th of what I paid for the PPV back. 2/5ths if you throw in Charles Mccarthy. I can’t believe Kalib. I would have gained back some small respect for him if he had one timed Quarry while he was doing the Skreech move. It would have been great if the first 14 minutes had led up to a devastating knock out in the last moments, but it still was a crap fight.
He should never fight in the UFC again.
by M on Apr 20, 2008 8:17 PM EDT reply actions
I’m surprised anyone here thinks we’ll ever see Starnes again in the Octagon. If you’ve seen enough TUF and interviews with Dana White, you have to know that he won’t stand for that kind of embarrassment. His running during the fight was bad enough, but his post-fight immaturity sealed the deal. As far as Quarry, can you blame him? More importantly, do you think White would? I couldn’t help but thinking “Quarry just made himself a star, and Starnes is finished” right after the fight. The only slim chance I could see Starnes staying around is because everyone is going to boo him mercilessly now, and Joe Silva could match him up with somebody else the UFC wants to help build up as a star.

He was a joke on TUFgiving up the op. for a six figure contract-And he has been a joke against real competition. The only sad part is he holds wins over Jason Macdonald and Chris Leban. He had the nerve to flick off his home crowd and Quarrys corner man. I thnk only one person of these 80 comments or so think Quarry was disrespectful. I think Starnes was more disrespectful by not engaging and taking $11.23 of our $44.95, especially now that the economy is so crappy. With all the nungry fighters out there we were graced with Kaleb Starnes spineless 15 minutes. I wish we had gotten to see Ed Herman and Demian Meia instead…

I can only sum up how I feel in my article. If you would like, head over to Madness and read it. And of course I lead right out with Starnes :)

I’m a bit surprised that know one has even thought that the fight may have been fixed. Yeah I know it sounds a bit crazy at first but if you watch the fight for a second time it was almost like kalib gave him the fight on purpose. I pray that the ufc doesn’t turn out to be like boxing but kalib might have really needed some money or thought he was going to lose anyway.
Something to think about at least.
by MDR on Apr 21, 2008 8:42 AM EDT reply actions
A “fixed fight” would have ended in a KO, just like 99.999% of all fixed fights do. Why have a decision and run away from the guy – this will bring about questions. However, getting dropped by a punch that lands wouldn’t.

i told my buddy that night that there are probably 2 guys out of the ufc now. Starnes and Lutter. Starnes will obviously be gone, but i think after the layoff he got for not making weight and then gassing like he did i don’t know how many more chances they will give Lutter.

Wow! alot of hate for Kalib…Can’t say I blame anyone, because that was just pathetic of him to backpedal the whole fight…
by Stagger-Lee on Apr 21, 2008 9:31 AM EDT reply actions
LOL. Kalib got the UFC record for 1st time a judge has ever given a 10-8 every round…haha
by Stagger-Lee on Apr 21, 2008 9:32 AM EDT reply actions
And that judge was still being generous after that pathetic showing.
by SeeRed on Apr 21, 2008 11:57 AM EDT up reply actions
AND he wasn’t even dropped in the fight. He got 8’s for no effort – not getting beat up. Amazing. PUSSY
by ViolentMike on Apr 21, 2008 12:20 PM EDT up reply actions
I know this is a non-factor but the reason Kalib was running was because his left leg was torn up from all the leg kicks that he took from Nate. Period. He was immobilized, he did not tap, and Nate could not knock him out so he just backed away at every exchange.
Believe me, a lot of people would react the same way if you were in his shoes because essentially your options are extremely limited after you take one too many leg kicks. When you’re the a hole like Kalib was, its either back away and pray for the bell, switch stances, or move forward and risk being knocked out, or tap.

I hope that Kalib comes out to say that he had just broke his hand 3 days before the fight, or his arm or SOMETHING! I can’t think of any other reason that a pro fighter would run away like that.

this is form sherdog not me
Just heard Starnes on the radio station from Montreal.
Basically he sets the record straight and backs it up with proof. As many of you know this was his last fight of the UFC contract and he has always voiced his dissatisfaction with his salary. Basically after the Kendall Grove fight where his rib was broken, UFC did NOT cover any medical bills even though it happened on the “work site”.
He said that he is one of the many fighters who get injured and never compensated by the UFC. He was well aware that he was on the main card because it was Canada, and this being his last fight he decided to protest in the names of all underpaid fighters and screw over the UFC.
This is NO joke because he claimed that the only reason Dana White officially released the fight bonuses was in order to counter-act the public statement that Starnes is about to make or would have made. However, since the 75k fight bonuses were disclosed Kalib’s martyr actions may not be as significant.
Nevertheless, expect an official statement later this week as his gym is holding a official press conference on Wednesday. We all know that the “real” Kalib Starnes would have never fought the way he did and luckily there IS an explanation.

This is BS. He’s Canadian and gets free healthcare. Plus the guy who posted that to Sherdog can’t even say which radio station he heard it on. There’s also the fact that Kalib did try to mount an offense a couple of times. If it was a protest, why would he have done even that much?
Until a source is cited and verified, this is BS!

I’m going to make a fight suggestion.
Quarry vs Bisping.
ViolentMike what do you think?
I’m a Canadian and I have to say that after that performance I would let Kalib out of his contract. That was just shit.

Kalib Starnes did comment about his in his last fight. He said that he lost $1000.

As a Canadian i would have him deported. You listening Stephen Harper? I said it before as well… Nate Quarry is the toughest Jehova’s Witness on the planet. Kalib was pissed that the UFC refused to help him with the massive gash he got in the last fight. I can see why he is pissed considering they gave Shogun an orthopedic surgeon for his knee as well as other medical help. So fight your last fight on your contract and move to another organization if you think the grass is greener. If you want greener gas go join Elite and see Nick Diaz

Kalib sucks but Nate has to learn how to cut off the Ring, you ant going to catchno one following them around.
by Seconds Out on Apr 21, 2008 5:00 PM EDT reply actions
Kalib should never be allowed to fight in UFC again.
Nate made the fight and showed real class and in the third showed what the fight was.
Great aggression and technique for what he had to chase to get.

No one listen to Kalib (I can’t stand him, personally)for 2 months before the fight? He consistently undermined the UFC for the same reasons Randy Couture did. I agree that if he felt as Mr. Couture then he should’ve retired. He didnt want to retire and Dana White, going back to his boxing days, will not void a fighters’ contract . Dana is notorious for signing fighters to exclusive multi-fight contracts without expiration then never giving them their last fight. So they’re under contract, but unable to fight, without him. Re: IBF vs Dana White 1999 Superior Court State of Nevada. Durng Kalib’s radio interview before the fight he dogged the UFC for not having health coverage or assisting him with medical bills and dropping the hint this would be his last UFC fight and why not CBS demands liabilty and fight night health coverage from EliteXC along with fighter friendly contracts. Unless the UFC steps up headlining fighters will continue to move to EliteXC. Sean McCanus, head of CBS sports, mention that its partnership with EliteXC was attractive because EliteXC is working diligently to secure a New Years Eve MMA match between the two most recognized fighters in MMA,. I think he meant Fedor Vs. Couture. If you ever wonder why Fedor wont fight in the UFC its because he refuses to sign a 3 fight deal.

I am not defending Kalib at all, but what Quarry did was not in keeping with the Budo and sportsman like spirit of the sport. I am training as a fighter and I don’t care what anyone says, antics like that do not belong in the UFC or the sport for that matter. I used to like Kalib before this fight, I was extremely dissapointed with this fight. I hope for his sake that he was hurt or trying to make some sort of statement, because that is not the type of fighter that Starnes actually is, he is normally very good, I have seen him fight in other venues than the UFC and he has always fought very hard. Just my .02

I watched the fight again… and I now see what Kalib Starnes was trying to do. He was trying to be like Jesus. Although he may have not openly admited this, post fight, his actions have brought to light the “poor” conditions that fighters incur with UFC contracts ie. lack of medical coverage. He so whole heartedly believes in this that he is willing to Martyr his career in MMA. His complete lack of offense during the fight furthers this theory… he didn’t want to hurt Nate Quarry. I was pissed off about his performance on UFC83 but you have to give him credit for willingly ruining his carrer on live television. The truth is he shouldn’t fight anymore. He should work for an insurance company working with fighters, promotion companies and Athletic commissions so that fighters can have a better medical coverage. There are so many people out there right now crucifying Starnes without realizing that he may be the Messiah of Fighters.

Dont want to say anything bad about the fighters, im sure he trained very hard for this fight and sacrificed alot, however he didnt show up to fight that night, in fact that is how i would have fought if I was suddenly yanked from the crowd and thrusted in the octagon against a UFC fighter and told “FIGHT!”. Id be like “get fucked man, im not tradin with this fella!” Im not gonna rip on him like all you guys are, im sure he feels bad enough as it is, at the end of the day, i couldnt live with myself if i wasted an opportunity to put it all on the line in the octagon in front of the biggest crowd in UFC history, but then again, im not gonna say anything bad at all about Kalib because a) it is not my position to and b) im sure he is beating himself up about it anyway.

if you want bushido crap for karate kid movie night and kata practice. These guys are paid to bludgeon faces, break limbs, and deny oxygen. If Kalib didn’t like the ufc contract well now he’s out, let’s see what type of healthcare the barnyard mma event in no where canada is gonna give him. The truth is the UFC is the highest paying mma org out there now. Bodog is gone, IFL is dying and if Elite doesn’t pull huge numbers on may 31 the rumor is they’re done. In an interview Kalib says he hurt his foot rnd 1 and the leg strikes didn’t help. he runs well with a broken foot. Silvia shattered his forarm and didnt want to stop fighting. looks like Kalib has to get a real job now hope he likes minimum wage.
