UFC Quick Quote: Georges St. Pierre is scared

"I'm scared. I'm very nervous. I have butterflies, but I have to make my butterflies fly in formation."
-- An open and honest Georges St. Pierre reveals his emotions (common for just about every other fighter) during the final prefight press conference for UFC 83: "Serra vs. St. Pierre 2," which takes place later on this evening from the Bell Centre in Montreal, Quebec. "Rush" is a hometown MMA hero and is widely considered one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the sport. However, his mental toughness has often been questioned. That will all change with a win tonight -- the pressure on him right now must be insane.

Canada booed him NOT THE UNITED STATES, SO believe me when I tell you HE DOES NOT GIVE A F*CK#! He knows HIS NATION is behind him! Surely he can care less about those pepe lemiue speaking motherf*#kers!

Unbelievable amount of racism…. Why speak the way you do? Were you left alone as a child, or just weren’t brought up right… I bet you’re parents are to blame. What the F*** is this world (or the US I should say) coming to?
WAR GSP & FEDOR!

His nation is behind him?? OK, so when they showed him on the big screen at UFC 82 and the entire arena booed him, thats being behind him?? Quite frankly not a lot of people like this guy, and the nation has nothing to do with it. He brought it on himself.

I have a had time understanding how a guy that trains as hard as Georges does and dedicates his life to this sport gets nervous. The mental toughness it takes to train and excel in multiple disciplines, as well as, the sheer force of will it takes to live and dedicate one’s self to the lifestyle is staggering (is anybody in better shape?). How then, does he become such a head case when it’s time to fight?
BTW, I surely didn’t see any mental butterflies when he took on Matt Hughes last…

Listen, you think GSP is the only one who get nervous? Get real….He is the only one man enough to admit it. Dont mistake being mentally weak for keeping it real! there is a big difference. He wouldnt be human if he wasn’t nervous.
So much nitpicking its ridiculous. He will be all right! Believe me!
by john on Apr 19, 2008 10:43 AM EDT up reply actions
I know, everybody gets nervous before a fight, for the exception of fedor (but he isn’t human anyways) :P
by linx on Apr 19, 2008 1:21 PM EDT up reply actions
true! MIKE TYSON once that he was afraid before every fight. he said if a fighter says hes not afraid before a fight he’s either lying or crazy!

Chuck Liddell usually looks calm but you could tell he was nervous when he stood toe to toe with Rampage in the octagon.

Why wouldn’t he be shittin bricks?! There’s probably all kids of doubt running through his mind right about now. Should be interesting to see how he handles the presssssuuuuuuurrrrre!!

I think the fact that he is willing to admit he has butterflies proves his mental stability will be a problem.

I’ve bashed GSP all week, but of course he’s nervous. Every fighter gets nervous, he’s human. Go Seera and everyone have a good week end, talk to you monday

Haha see you then. You better be back once GSP smashes Serra :).

Ah, here come all the GSP haters, He admitted that he was nervous. Every fighter gets nervous, and if you say that you dont then you are full of shit. This guy has a ton of heart and his training is resentless, especially since he is now is Greg Jackson’s camp. He has a ton of pressure on him right now, fighting in front of the home crowd imo doesnt benefit you, yes your people are there, but its a huge disadvantage in mma, you want to preform for the ppl and not let them down. You need to preform to win and not worry about what your hometown thinks, because winning is all that matters. It doesnt matter if its a TKO, SUB, or DEC, Thanks GSP for maning up and telling us that your nervous, I SURE AS HELL WOULD BE….. and all you haters would be as well

GSP is going to have a BIG climb back to the top when he get embarrassed by Serra again tonight.
Matt Serra is not getting the credit he deserves.
He is the most underrated & under appreciated fighter in MMA. His record is deceiving…he’s fought the best & the toughest fighters. There’s no doubt he in my mind, he can kick GSP’s butt again.
SERRA BY TKO IN THE 1st ROUND!
After this fight, GSP will have to go to the end of the long line of pretenders to the welterweight throne.
He’ll probably bail for one of the other MMA shows where he can again dominate.

Hes fought the best and toughest? Give me a list at least 4 names long.

I guess he’s talking about his losses to BJ Penn and Karo, Din thomas…maybe Shonie Carter?
Can’t wait till serra gets his face smashed in and GSP tosses him over to hughes

Either you are A)Matt Serra’s immediate family or B)delusional or C)Trying to irritate the sane fans on this site.
I think you’re a combination of B & C.

The difference in the two fighters fighting the best (and I’m not sure who you think Serra has fought who is so great), is Serra has lost and GSP has destroyed his opponents. Just like tonight.
by darlyn on Apr 19, 2008 1:46 PM EDT up reply actions
Everybody is scared/nervous, but I really think Serra is so confident, and I think Serra regardless of this statement, is going to win. I am a huge Serra fan, and I have been ever since his fight against Shonie Carter at UFC 31. So I am a little biased when I say Serra is going to win, but yet I also believe that.

man oh man. i’ve never heard people make such a mountain out of a mole hill (not talking abt the commenters, more the media in general). know what i think? i don’t think gsp’s EVER been mentally weak? what real evidence for that do we have? he treated hughes with too much respect in their first fight, and could’ve done better than he did. that’s fairly common, many young fighters have done that (look at rashad evans against tito, or thiago alves against parisyan). in two rematches, he DESTROYED hughes, so i don’t see mental weakness there. he did look nervous going out to fight serra the first time. but does anyone REALLY think he was nervous because of the “big moment”? he’d just destroyed hughes in a much bigger moment against a better fighter? i’m guessing he was nervous because he realized he hadn’t prepared himself as much as he should’ve, a realization that would make most people nervous. not preparing the way u should’ve is more an example of youth and inexperience, not “mental weakness”. y haven’t more people made that distinction? abt him admitting he’s nervous, how do u think he felt against hughes the last two times, or sherk, or trigg? he was probably nervous heading into all of them, many great fighters feel that sensation, and u see how he performed against them. sometimes people do some of their best work when they’re somewhat nervous; it gives them a focused edge. btw, i think he’ll wreck serra tonight. he’ll feel the same way he felt against hughes last time, somewhat nervous and also excited and anticipating, and he’ll wreck him. then he can be honest and later admit something else which fighters “aren’t supposed to admit”, and this whole silly cycle can start again, except on a different topic. come on guys, we should know better than this…

GSP just gave Matt Serra more fuel for this fight. I hate Matt Serra but I’m sure he thinks , no, knows he can win this fight. If I was GSP I woulda never said those things.
by GodannarJunkie on Apr 19, 2008 12:30 PM EDT reply actions
No No no not at all. Honesty is always a sign of strength, not weakness. If anything, it will give Serra false confidence thinking GSP is scared. Nervousness and fear is only energy in the body. How you use that energy is what dictates outcome. That’s why he mentioned getting his butterflies in formation—channeling the nervous energy into focus and belief. Trust me, a little bit of self honesty is a trademark of all great athletes who succeed. GSP is mostly just an honest dude. He doesn’t feel the need to throw out false bravado like Serra does.
Serra totally has a chance at this. Really good BJJ guys always do. I like GSP by destruction is my prediction. GSP always seems to take his lessons and turn them into positive experiences.
by dave on Apr 19, 2008 7:13 PM EDT up reply actions
GSP got KO’d last time, he’s going to be hesitant of getting knocked out and won’t fight to the level he did with Hughes because he hasn’t beaten Serra..and that WILL have a big impact on his mental state, regardless if his fans say it won’t or not.
by BK on Apr 19, 2008 12:32 PM EDT reply actions
GSP is going to go in pick Serra up slam him down and reign down punches! TKO 1st round! But if he does get lucky looks like another title for HUGHES!
by HughesFanInILL on Apr 19, 2008 1:04 PM EDT reply actions
Seems like Serra’s mental toughness is also in question because all he talks about is nobody gives him respect, or is looking past him. If a person is mentally tough those things wouldn’t matter would they? He’s also like a little kid wanting people to join him in not likeing Matt Hughes. Every interview he throws Hughes name in there, and says he’s getting no respect for the GSP fight. Thats also being weak minded in my book.

MIKE TYSON once said he was afraid before a fight everytime he fought, even in his prime. he said that fighters who claimed they weren’t afraid were either crazy or lying. war gsp!

One mistake Serra might make is trying too hard to KO him again. I think he might load up on his punches and leave himself more open to GSP’s takedowns. It could be the night of 1000 takedowns, with Serra just getting worn out by the pace. Don’t think GSP will risk banging with him until later rounds, when Serra starts to gas.
by Revjames13 on Apr 19, 2008 1:56 PM EDT reply actions
in my opinion, i think serra is way more skilled. i think serra is a further greater jiu jitsu fighter and apparantly a better stand up fighter then GSP. But that set aside, I hope GSP kicks his ass
by adam on Apr 19, 2008 2:37 PM EDT reply actions
You can’t be serious. GSP is better at everything with the possible exception of jiujitsu.
It will all be clear a few hours from now.

Hilarious…. but so delirious. GSP will GnP a TKO in the 2nd round.
by DL on Apr 19, 2008 9:54 PM EDT up reply actions
I will bet on Serra. Only because of two things: 1.He has done it before, and 2.Have you seen the freakin odds?!?!
I agree with everyone saying its no big deal to be scared. Fear can be a powerful tool, and may work to GSP’s favor. He should be commended for admitting it. I would have kept that whole brick in the water thing to myself though.

I’m watching the Serra vs GSP fight before the live event right now, and Serra is kinda winning me over. After he wins he says nothing bad about GSP he even said that he knew GSP was still dangerous even though he was hurt, GSP was the future of the division. Maybe I didn’t hear that cause I’m a GSP fan and I was stunned that he lost. But yea Serra is alright I guess
