UFC Quick Quote: Vitor Belfort won't help train Tito Ortiz for Lyoto Machida UFC 84 fight

vitor belfort

"Lyoto has the skills to win, but is a tough fight. Two famous athletes, but I believe that Lyoto has more chances, he is at fight rhythm and Tito is star ... Tito wanted to hire me with a lot of money, but I said no. I said that money can't buy everything. I respect Lyoto a lot, we trained together and he is Brazilian. I thank and said that maybe in another opportunity, but not now. Lyoto is Brazilian and that is his time."

-- Former UFC light heavyweight champion, Vitor Belfort, tells Tatame.com that he turned down a lucrative offer from Tito Ortiz to help him prepare for Lyoto Machida at UFC 84: "Ill Will" on May 24 in Las Vegas, Nevada. "The Phenom" and "The Huntington Beach Bad Boy" locked horns back at UFC 51: "Super Saturday" in 2005. Ortiz won the bout via split-decision and Belfort has not competed inside the Octagon since that time.

Not a huge Tito fan as of late, but I think he should win this fight, if he does it in old tito fashion he might even stay in the ufc

by kevin on Apr 17, 2008 1:22 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Even if he wins I dont think he’ll be back. Too much of an ego battle with Dana I’ve never really been a Fan of Tito so I’ll be rooting against him.

by RiverHorror on Apr 17, 2008 1:50 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

don’t be naive, he’ll go where the money is, and if he puts on a “show” they’ll pay him. He’s a big name who can make you talk about his fight no matter who he fights. Half his problem is that his “male reproductive organ dumpster” of a girlfriend is in his ear telling him Dana sucks. If he’d shut her up, and look at the big picture-he’s a fighter not an actor or tv star- he’d be fine, until then, he’ll just be a pissing and moaning has been who beat ken shamrock 3 times (woohoo)lol

Not helping Tito because Vitor and Machida are both Brazilian is retarded.

by GoColts on Apr 17, 2008 1:22 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Actually, Machida and Vitor have trained together for some time. I would be bashing him if he agreed to train Tito, not for refusing.

Tito is in trouble. He does not like to get hit and Machida is going to use his footwork to tag him up from all kinds of angles. I can not imagine Tito winning that fight and I am not even a big machida fan. I just think his skills will be too much for Tito to keep up with and if Tito can manage to take the fight to the ground, staying in Machida’s guard, which is all tito does will be very dangerous.

by john on Apr 17, 2008 1:29 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

well put..I agree 100%
This is a bad match-up for Tito, and I aswell would be “bashing” Vitor if he had agreed…

machita and belfort are both on team blackhouse….tito is an idiot for even asking….its like hughes asking loiseau to help him prepare for gsp….tito and his money/ariticial mma fame are no match to a real mma team

I Think Tito will be leaving the UFC on a down note after this fight. Machida by UD.

RACISM!

by ajadoniz on Apr 17, 2008 1:43 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Word! Let a white American be in that same scenario. They would never live it down.

by jimmy_dean on Apr 17, 2008 1:58 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yet both Machida and Belfort are white! Stupid comment, they are both good friends, train for the same team and theres nothing wrong with national pride. Its like when fans at a UFC event support the american fighters over the foreigners, is that being racist or just being proud of being american? When Franklin faced Silva and everyone in the event pretty much cheered for Franklin, were they being racist?

by JJ on Apr 17, 2008 2:13 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

JJ, machida isn’t white, he’s asian decent. but you’re right with everything else you’ve said. although brazilians have a tremendeous national pride, I think the main reason for vitor not training with tito is because vitor and machida are on the same team.

Also, for everyone else, one can’t be RACIST when talking about NATIONALITY… Racism has to do with ethnicality not nationality.

by linx on Apr 17, 2008 3:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, I guess now we know that Vitor is not a whore.

Quote from Paulo Filho: “I would never train with an American to fight with a Brazilian. I am not a slut or a prostitute.”

by ViolentMike on Apr 17, 2008 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

you mean like Tito’s girlfriend? lol I couldn’t resist, didn’t you find my analogy funny mike??

by kevin on Apr 17, 2008 3:48 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well Randy help Wanderlei train for his fight with Chuck and still trains with him. He didn’t say no Wandy, I can’t help you train since your going to fight an American. He could have just said no because they were on the same team he didn’t have to mention nationality. Anyway, I said let a white American say what Vitor is saying and they would be called a racist. I didn’t say that Vitor and Lyoto weren’t white Brazilians genius.

by jimmy_dean on Apr 17, 2008 4:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Your implying that an american would be called a racist for saying that? Not a chance. Im not saying all Brazilians would reject a chance to train an america when fighting another Brazilian, but being Brazilian I know that we are very proud of our nationality and athletes. We like to help them out.
By the way, Wandy only started training with Randy after the Chuck fight, genius!!! And Machida is also white considereing his mothers side.

by JJ on Apr 17, 2008 4:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with you, all this bullshit about being brazilian is played out. I would like to see Wanderlei vs Machida or Wandy at MW vs Anderson Silva. What are they gona say then they can’t fight each other cause there brazilian? And it’s true that if a guy like Chuck or Randy would say something like that, people would never let them live it down. With that said I hope Tito smashes overrated Lyoto ( the butterfly ) Machida.

by JV on Apr 17, 2008 4:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

JV, ajadoniz and jimmy_dean, you guys are playing the double standard victim card. Picture chuck or randy saying the same thing “I won’t train him to fight with another american”, that doesn’t sound racist, may sound a little ignorant but not racist. I’m not defending vitor for what he said, he should have just said that he wouldn’t train with him because they are on the same team, period, but there is no racism here. Paulo filho is another person who made the same type of remarks, they should have just said no without going into explaining why. Understand the meaning of racism, open a dictionary, there is no room for debate in this topic. Also, they were talking to the brazilian media, and as JJ has already mentioned here, we Brazilians are very patriotic when it comes to sport, any sport. Think of a sport not well known, put a brazilian that does well in it and you’ll have a stadium filled with ppl wearing yellow and green (ppl that may not even know much about the sport). He was being patriotic when he added that another reason aside from being in the same camp as machida is that he won’t help someone who isn’t brazilian beat a brazilian. Again, I’m not defending what he said, but I understand.

BTW, JJ, machida is asian, you can say mix also but he is more asian than he is white. The predominant gene is the one that is used to describe a person’s race. For example, you wouldn’t call obama a white person would you? He’s half black half white, but he is black.

by linx on Apr 17, 2008 5:18 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, what if Randy said to Wanderlei:

“Hey man, I would help you train for your fight with Chuck but… I’m white, and Chuck is white… and we are both American too, so no, I can’t help you. If your fighting rampage or some other black guy then I will help you.”

by Brandon on Apr 17, 2008 5:31 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Brandon, I still don’t get where you guys are getting this race stuff from? Is brazilian a race or nationality? Did vitor say he wasn’t going to train with tito because he’s white or because he’s american? Vitor was being ignorant for the remarks he made, but some ppl here are being just as ignorant for comparing apples to oranges (or race to nationality)…

by linx on Apr 17, 2008 6:03 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

LINX nowhere in my statement says the word racist. Your bringing that word into this conversation. Wouldnt you like to see Wandy vs Machida or Wandy at MW vs Anderson? What would you say if they didn’t want to, because of there race. And regardless of what you say people would be very offended if Chuck or Randy would make statements like that. I don’t care where a fighters from I just want to see some good fights.

by JV on Apr 17, 2008 6:19 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually jimmy_dean is the one who brought the racist example if a white american had said the same thing, you were just agreeing with him. There are two things wrong with what you are saying.

1-Vitor said he’s not training an american to fight a brazilian, not that a brazilian wouldn’t fight another brazilian. Brazilians fight other brazilians all the time, and I’d love to see wandy vs machida or wandy vs the spider. This could happen in the near future but I hope he won’t drop to MW cause he’d get demolished by the spider. I actually want wandy to stay at LHW more than dropping to MW, there are just better fights at LHW.

2-You seem to think that I agree with what vitor said, when I actually don’t. I think what he said is very ignorant, but not racist (therefore the example of an american saying the same thing would also not fall under the “racist” ticket, making jimmy_dean’s big “IF” point not valid).

by linx on Apr 17, 2008 6:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

This country is freaking RETARDED. We cant even leave out the “Race Issue” on an mma Blog? Dude Vitor was not being racists. It might sound that way due to his poor english or the translation, but why are we even talking about Race on this site?

by john on Apr 18, 2008 8:02 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

The fact of the matter is, above all, alot of these Brazilian fighters would not face each other because they have trained with each other and know each other for a long time. Some Brazilian fighters may face one another because they have no real connection, Machida vs Wanderlei Silva for example, and in the past Belfort vs Wandi, Arona vs the Ruas, Babalu vs Shogun and there are more examples. But there are some fighters that just wont fight each other because they are good friends and just happen to be Brazilian. You would never see Rampage and Tito fight each other for pretty much the same reasons, why doesnt everyone berrate them about that friendship.

by JJ on Apr 18, 2008 8:40 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

so im not racist if i say i hate Germans? what am i then?

by Egads on Apr 17, 2008 11:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Egads, you wouldn’t be a racist if you hated germans, you’d be a bigot. there is a difference. racists are bigots, but bigots are not necessarily racists.

by linx on Apr 18, 2008 6:55 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

just to clarify, vitor is not being a bigot here either, he’s being patriotic. He doesn’t hate Americans, he just won’t help someone train against:

1-his teammate
2-against another brazilian (which can be considered as being a bit ignorant)

Im gonna go ahead and call BS on this on. I dont think Tito would call Vitor for help, first Vitor always talks shit about Tito and says that he wants to fight him again for revenge, 2nd how will Vitor help him with Lyoto..they fight way different…I think Vitor is making stuff up to keep his name out there, since he isnt fighting to do it

I heard Belfort is a really dickhead to the fans, so I could care less about his career. I like Tito but he’s not going to beat Machida. Tito’s more like nearing the end of his career than getting better. His cardio will never be what it once was and neither will his injury plagued body, along with that plague girlfriend yapping in his ear, he’s more like on his way down even though I think he’s got about 3 more competitive years maybe 5 if he only fights once a year.

Tito could have Frank Dux, Dalton and Walker Texas Ranger train him, and he still won’t beat Machida. Machida by TKO in the second, then it’s on to EliteXC.

Machida is going to win this fight. Since day one when we all heard that this fight was inked in for his event. Tito has taken this very lightly, he wants out of the ufc and thinks he is going to go right through machida. Fat chance dumb ass! Machida is no laughing matter, maybe tito will look like ken shamrock did after there tilte fight with tito.

As for tito leaving the ufc, sure sure he says he is going to be leaving but honestly where is going to go? I know he is a big name and he has done a lot for the sport however people are not going to stop watching UFC because titos dumb ass isnt there. And as for the bad blood with the UFC and Jenna, she just needs to realize that it was the UNITED STATES AIR FORCE that didnt want her there at that show not the UFC. What’s Dana going to do pull an entire show for our troops just because some beat up porn star can show i dont think so.

Vitor and Tito had a good fight but I guess he doesn’t like Tito. which is kinda strange I mean I’ve never heard of anyone not liking Tito.some people really need to lighten up about whats prejudice and just a different point of view. It’s not like people here are saying to burn crosses on someones lawns.lighten up already.

by Getrawbc on Apr 18, 2008 6:54 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I still think it should have been Machida vs Jardine, I would have loved to see how Machida dealt with jardines leg strikes. And also Tito should have fought Silva, they have some history as Tito has beaten him once before so they could have made it revenge thing. I would have really looked forward to that. I think they realise that Jardines style doesn’t match up to well with Silva, and they are hoping that Silva will push Jardine away from any hopes of a title shot, because as they did with Matt Lindland they do not see him as marketable. I hope Jardine does win, he may lack the personality of Forrest, but he is definately a better fighter and is more skilfull. Please do not mention Forrests victory over a gassed, 50% out of shape Shogun. That fight only proved how bad Shogun was that night, not how good Forrest was.

by Ade on Apr 18, 2008 8:05 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Hey, I usually defend the 50% shogun when talking about how forrest shouldn’t be in line for a title shot, but I have to agree with you. That fight only proves how unprepared shogun came to fight that night. He really shouldn’t have taken the fight given the circumstances.

I also would have rather seen wandy vs tito, but thiago silva vs jardine instead of lyoto would have been better for me. I think lyoto is already deserving of a title shot.
