sprinting, lol thats what he does across the octagon before a fight. He’s got some sick talent, he just better hope that sports shrink pays off. Serra TKO

by kevin on Apr 17, 2008 3:04 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

mentally everything is going good in his life..last time injury, cousin, dad…c’mon, people get hurt and/or die every day…guess what life goes on. Brett Farve had his dad die on a fri. and won on sun…GSP’s dad was sick. That is weak!! REAL athletes have the mental strength to persevere for 5 5min rounds. He can’t put things behind him for 25 min????

by kevin on Apr 17, 2008 3:06 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Fighters make excuses for their loses all the time. And keep in mind most make their excuses right away and some even tell Rogan right after the fight. It is only natural to try and figure out the reason you lost, especially when you are a huge favorite like GSP. Like GSP said, people would’t stop asking him why he lost, so he started giving a different answer than Serra was the better fighter that night. And I think throwing a football is a little different than getting punched in the face.

by bnf on Apr 17, 2008 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

People get hurt and die everyday? You’re obviously a guy who has neither trained seriously nor fought.

LOL, that’s brilliant. Fighters are affected by injuries and family problems. We’ve heard the same thing from Couture, Franklin, Liddell, etc. Fighting is a bit different than playing QB, both in preparation and actual competition.

and real people who car more about family than sports are real humanbings he could of pulled out of the fight but didnt or fake a bullshit injury like serra did i had the same injury and it dont heal that fast so real athlets play hurt

Hey Kevin, until someone CLOSE to you dies you don’t have a CLUE what you are talking about. If you think you will just put things behind you, you are in for a rude awakening. You would be lucky to concentrate on tying your shoes, let alone a championship fight. Maybe Farve hated his dad and if he didn’t it is only 1 poor example, because most people are DEVISTATED when they lose a family member. I suppose Vitor Belfort was weak when his sister was raped and murdered and he lost or Joe Riggs when his daughter died and he lost. It really is something that you can’t understand until it happens to YOU.

blah blah blah, enuff clips. lets get the fite on so Frenchie can either lose again or win and be put on his pedestal again buy the ufc and fans only to eventually get knocked off later on!!!

His pyschologist had him write Matt Serra on a brick and through it in a river. St. Pierre probably cries himself to sleep at night. I wouldn’t dare piss the guy off. But I bet you he’s one of those guys that gets a little drunk and cries to his buddies about how depressed he is.

Holy shit. That’s amazing. How much do you figure his shrink charges for that kind of shit?

This guy should Shut Up already, he has all the talent in the world, all the weapons to take this fight but
he’s still making excuses about something that happened a year ago.
In DANA’s own word flow Throw your stupid F*ucking brick and shut the F*ck up.
I wonder if Greg Jackson knew that GSP was such a fruit cake when he signed him.
SERRA BY BEAT DOWN.. AGAIN AND AGAIN !

ok, does anyone else besides me thing GSP is seriously suspect??? i mean just the way he talks and acts… guys either just crazy or too messed up in the head b/c he hasnt come out of the closet, LOL. maybe those r the personal problems he had when the first fite happened, he was fighting with his “partner”, HAHA!!! Serra all the way, i hope

hey did you have permission to use my lines??lol, you’re good Bobby!! I agree, this guy has such a skill set, and the mental toughness that is less than my 6 year old son (who incidently has no problem grounding and pounding his elbow through my face evry time we fight).

Living in the stone age, sports psychologist are more educated in understanding the mind of an athlete than you could ever hope to understand… welcome to the modern day athlete… GSP will go on to dominate the welter weight division, and you’ll still be commenting on how mentally weak he is..lol

by THORAZINE on Apr 17, 2008 4:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

thorazine… sure i hear what you’re saying. sports psych dr.s are educated, and statisticly proven to improve performance. its a FACT. but seriously, a brick?!?! u think iceman, rampage, spider, randy, bj need a brick?! i’m with ktown on this 1. serra’s gonna expose him and bust his head wide open AGAIN. i used to kindof like GSP but i just can’t relate to this sensitive fighter BS.

by kama kaze on Apr 17, 2008 5:04 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Lets crucify the most talented welter weight in the world because he went to see a sports shrink! Come on, its not that big of a deal. Chuck Liddell used that Big Dummy from Shallow hal and no one says he is weak. GSP is 25 years old and comes from a different culture than most of us do so half the stuff he does wont make sense to us, but this in no way should take away from what a warrior he is in the Octagon. This kid has brought it in every single fight he has ever had in the UFC, they have always been exciting and its extremely rare that he looses.

He is obviously doing something right. I think all this crap about him being mentally weak is just hate from all the other fighters under him who cant find any flaws in his game to talk trash about so they attak is mental strength.

Fighters need to stop worrying about where his heads at and start finding a way to beat him, or they will all start sounding like a bunch of trash talking Phil Baroni’s!

by john on Apr 17, 2008 5:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

i agree. i’ll bet every nfl,nba and mlb lockeroom has a sports psychatrist. also is it just me or have you noticed alot of the bloggers who usually support gsp are all of a sudden hating on him for the same reason. i think they are just trying to play both sides just in case gsp loses and they can jump on the serra bandwagon and say they knew it all along!

by b.w. on Apr 17, 2008 5:51 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

this response was to john. this new set-up is alittle confusing at times.

by b.w. on Apr 17, 2008 6:07 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

we’re in agreement about sports psychologists. they’re common and proven useful. but THE BRICK IS LAME! and the fact that he gains satisfaction from writing Serra’s name on it and throwing it into a river IS WEIRD! LOL.. ok, you can’t change my mind on that. Serra by Staredown! OH BOY!

by kama kaze on Apr 17, 2008 6:46 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree with john. People should shut up about his “mental weakness” and worry about how badly he is going to pound them out. GSP is awesome, you people make me sick talking down on him for this.

by Toms Bombs on Apr 17, 2008 11:24 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

come on guys… even if you’re not gsp fans… why would you want serra to win… wouldn’t you rather see gsp vs fitch, karo, bj, kos rematch, alves… anyone for that matter than serra… gsp winning creates much better matchups than serra… even if serra does have his number… does anyone truly believe serra can beat hughes or fitch? i’m a huge gsp fan… but even in terms of entertainment… i think gsp winning creates much better future matchups… my personal opinion anyway.

by haemophiliac on Apr 17, 2008 3:41 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

be careful or some will start calling you a nuthugger. not me of course. i said it once and i’ll say it again. if gsp lose to serra again all will not be right with the mma world. and this isn’t a knock against serra, just props to gsp.

Kevin, I have to wonder how well you would perform at your job (whatever it may be) if the 6 yr. old son you speak of was in the hospital. You may be a dead-beat dad and it wouldn’t affect you, but I am going to give you some credit and say you would be distracted, maybe even miss a day of work or two.

Point being, to say he is mentally weak for his dad being in the hospital and cousin dying and it affecting him in even a small way is ridiculous for anyone to say, especially when he is going to be locked in a cage with another highly trained athlete trying to hurt him.

Favre was in his upper 30’s and had a whole team alongside him to support him. You can bet each teammate was a sports pyschologist that weekend, telling him they were gonna give him everything on that field so he could win for his dad. If anything, the comparison between Favre and GSP makes Georges look even stronger for getting in the octogon. (IMO)

I’ll admit that ill be alittle nervous the first minute of the fight – if GSP survives that – he’ll realize that Serra’s standup is several knotches below his and itll look like a Pros vs Joes matchup

GSP will embarrass Serra the longer the fight goes, then Serra will realize he actually isnt a top 10 ww and all the rankings can finally erase his name off their lists.

^mma fighters should live by the same rule of thumb we have for supermodels. they should just be seen and not heard, LOL. with the exception of a few people like serra and rampage. u know guys who actually have a personality. its funny b/c this fite is like rocky 4 b/c gsp is start to sound and act more and more like a roboti like the russian guy in rocky was!!! remember the russian guy said I MUST BREAK YOU, and gsp says in the promos MY JOB WILL BE TO DESTORY MATT SERRA, haha too much of a coincidenc

GSP is a dork. I’ll bet that even if he does win this weekend, he will lose the belt in his first title defense AGAIN. and thus he will never successfully defend the belt. Fitch will likely beat him via G and P

by BLOodyMEss on Apr 17, 2008 4:14 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

if u look at the fighters on this card its more like a freak show instead of a mma event. gsp- probably suspect and reason he’s so messed up is b/c his management tells him not to come out of the closet. rich franklin-former school teacher who pulled out of a fite to spend the holiday with his family. Danzig-idiot vegan who talked and acted like a robitic douche while on tuf. nate quarry-former jahovis witness who acted like some kind of elitest motha theresa on tuf 1. the card looks good but some of these guys need to just STFU. Mcdonald-complaining about facing a guy he beat a few years back after he just got dominated by okami in his last fite and destroyed by franklin before that. This is the tito effect. He knew by running his mouth it could increase ppv buyrates and he would get paid more, which is what all these fighters are trying to do now.

am i the only one that thinks this way???

by Bobby O'shea on Apr 17, 2008 4:24 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I’ll bet the idiot vegan could beat you to the ground without breaking a sweat O shea. but your just trolling and looking for people to get upset about your post. you should come out of the closet yourself

Bobby is totally right. all these fighters talk to much. Bloodymess, look at ur statement above, first u trash gsp then u defend him. danzig portrayed himself as an idiot on tuf 6 and even he admits it. hell neva be in the elite in the ufc lw division.

uh…not really sure why any of y’all give two sh*ts about a fighter’s sexual, personal, religious or culinary preferences. if the dude’s weak, for whatever reason, it’ll for sure come out in the octagon. all the bs talk is just that- bs. chalk most of it up to the UFC’s way of promoting fights.

by SeeRed on Apr 17, 2008 4:43 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

wow… its a trip how a guy with these kinds of ‘issues’ is at the top of a STACKED UFC WW division. he’s very blessed that he’s atheletic cuz thats the only thing thats keeping him up there.

by kama kaze on Apr 17, 2008 4:40 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

For 1 more day. GSP is still the #1 WW in the world, thus his ranking there in the MMA world rankings.

And nothing from your elementary, self-answered question addresses the multitude of incredible traits GSP exhibits, with athleticism being one of them.

Ya,and if you believe that ,you have a thing or two to learn about what it takes to be at the top, at an elite level, such as the UFC. GSP’s biggest weapon is his brains. He is well read, very intelligent and alway looking for cutting edge ways to improving his game in ALL areas. It’s easy to assume someone isn’t very bright when they aren’t speaking their native language, but only a fool would do that.

by shamo84 on Apr 17, 2008 5:16 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

didn’t michael jordan and brian lara also use sports psychology techniques to improve their performances??? its commonly used… people think gsp is mentally weak but i think a lot of that was put on him by everyone… after he lost to serra people were continuously all up in his face asking why he lost cause they couldn’t accept what he said after the fight “serra was the better fighter on the night”… i feel that gsp was kinda pushed into giving other reasons for his loss and everyone started weighing in with mental issues which then played out in his mind… kind of like self fulfilling prophecy… everyone said it so much he started doubting it himself… people couldnt just accept that he got caught… like anyone in this game can do… people needed a reason… when they got one they started to make him seem like the bad guy for giving in to it… he’s a young guy and everyone makes mistakes… where was his mental weakness when he ran through kos and hughes? i hope he beats serra and casts out any of these demons… so that he can just go back to putting on great shows like he did before…

by haemophiliac on Apr 17, 2008 5:28 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yes, MJ had a sports psychologist. I’ve brought this up many times, but kevin has always skirted the issue. Again I ask, what is wrong with working on your weakness?

by Pat on Apr 17, 2008 5:42 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

MJ’s weaknesses were/are women and gambling and balancing those two thing with basketball. I’m not skirting anything. GSP’s faults are getting caught up in the moment and making excuses, excuses and more excuses and then saying it’s the best thing that ever happened to him. LOL which one this one or Hughes?? cause he used the same line then. I’ve brought up the fact that he blamed it on his age (26) because other guys are in their 30’s, but you skirted this issue! Maybe we need a 26 and under division just for GSP!!

by kevin on Apr 17, 2008 5:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Don’t expect a legit answer, Pat.

Most other fighters aren’t as forthright as GSP. Hughes and Penn have a history of not training enough for big fights, and not taking MMA seriously enough. That’s just another form of mental weakness, when guys like Penn rely on natural talent so much they can’t push themselves to get in top shape.

GSP working on every aspect of his game shows how thorough he is. Just like how his BJJ game has gone from blue belt level to brown (close to black promotin) level, just as how his wrestling went from good to incredible, GSP’s mental game is also getting refined and improved. I wouldn’t want a champion to be any other way.

by Hardcharger on Apr 17, 2008 5:50 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I think some people have a hard time differentiating whether somebody is giving a reason or an excuse for a failure. If somebody asks me, “Why did you fail that test, are you dumb?” and I say “No, I didn’t prepare well enough”, I’m not making excuses. I’m explaining a cause for the result.

BJ Penn has a sports psychologist?
No

Randy Couture has a sports psychologist?
No

Rampage has has a sport psychologist?
No

Anderson Silva has a sport psycholigst?
No

Now I’m not 100% sure of those above remarks I just typed, but, I don’t ever hear about sports psychology from these champion fighters. GSP is gonna crack on Saturday under all the pressure. It seems he over thinks EVERYTHING. Its that constant buzz he creates in his own head that’s going to be his downfall.

by TABASCOsauce on Apr 18, 2008 5:23 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

by Gord on Apr 19, 2008 12:36 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

So you’re saying GSP is weak because he sees a shrink. I say he is SMART and this is just one of the cutting edge things GSP does to perfect his game. Do you realize that GSP has pretty much ran through the most stacked division in the UFC and only has 2 loses that he has avenged in such DOMINANT fashion that the 2 Matts looked like AMATEURS. The way he RAPED those guys it’s like he is undefeated. If that is mentally weak, ALL FIGHTERS SHOULD BE SO LUCKY. He is the most dominant pound for pound fighter out there, HANDS DOWN. The thing is he hasn’t even reached his potential, he’s only 26 and constantly improving. I can understand if people don’t like him ,but I am baffled that People doubt him.

I dont think GSP is mentally weak at all..I cant wait until he gets back his gold strap, and defends it like he was Anderson “the spider” Silva…Which(imo) he will do.
Even though I think it is really lame that he saw a shrink, I dont believe he is weak, he is just the type of guy to try anything to prepare himself for a fight…Alot of Athletes take advice from Shrink(which i think is stupid) It is not always for mentally weak related talk..

by Stagger-Lee on Apr 18, 2008 9:11 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I really hope this win ends the “GSP is weak” BULLSHIT. Name one other fighter who has avenged ALL his loses (in complete OWNAGE to boot). The guy has 2 belts and 1 interim belt at 26 years old. He lost a fight he shouldn’t have, due to personal problems and he showed us how it would have went down if he was himself. Don’t expect that to EVER happen again. He learns from his mistakes and he said, he would NEVER again take a fight if he was messed up like he was when he fought Serra the first time. Why can’t people realize that a mental injury, (a family member dieing) is more debilitating than a physical one. I guess those are the people who never been through the loss of a loved one. The only thing weak about GSP not showing up in 1 fight out of 18, is the argument that he is weak because of it.
