Ultimate Fighter 7 'brutal' knockout of Dan Simmler

The Ultimate Fighter 7 Video

"I've never seen somebody moan on the ground like that. It was, like, one of the gruesomest knockouts I've ever seen. Matt got ‘Knockout of the Century.'"

-- UFC Light Heavyweight Champion and coach on this season of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 7, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, comments on the brutal knockout of Dan Simmler in episode two of the mixed martial arts reality series. The video above captures the fuzzy aftermath of the carnage. Simmler made a full recovery ... just probably had a real bad headache in addition to a sore jaw. Ouch.

he was really asking for it. he had some of the worst standup i’ve seen. i might even go as far as to say that he didn’t even belong in the tryouts.

by Clayton on Apr 10, 2008 10:10 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I know this guy I’ve trained with him. You are right he’s always been like that, good on the ground terrified to get hit in the face. Also… the arrogance to step into the octagon with 0 fight experience, against the best undiscovered talent in the country, smells like somebody pulled some strings. Stick to jiu jitsu pal.

If you train with Simmler why would you be talking crap? I thought all Matt’s guys were close. Guess not.

I have a question Mania, since he had to go to the hospital, does UFCtake care of his health bills or does it have to come out of his pocket, how does it work out for these fighters???

by Shaolins Finest on Apr 10, 2008 10:19 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Of course his medical bills are taken care of, when someone is on TV (anyone) there is a minimum amount of money they HAVE TO GET PAID (because of the actors union, so don’t be so naive to think these guys go and leave their families behind for 13 weeks and don’t get any sort of compensation…

Brutal knockout of a guy that had zero stand up…"

by kevin on Apr 10, 2008 10:39 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Anything that happens in the ring is covered by insurance. The fighters don’t have to pay anything. Training is another story though.

The guys on the show might be covered for training during the show. I’m not sure.

Do you remember the guy in like season 3 or 4 who had a bad ligament going into his fight and complained a lot about it? He finished the tear off during the fight and got the free surgery.

rampage where am I? that was funny.

by alexguy on Apr 10, 2008 10:34 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

A guy sustains a head injury severe enough to cause him to have no recollection of the last half hour of his life, yeah hilarious.

by PW on Apr 10, 2008 10:38 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Chill out. He had a concussion, he was fine 2 days later, i’m sure. Besides, it was pretty funny. Especially the way Rampage just stared at him with his head half turned and didn’t say a word.

by Clayton on Apr 10, 2008 10:45 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Yeah, thats why its not so funny, if you’ve ever had 4 ounce gloves on to any extent, you might realize this.

by BlackSunshine on Apr 10, 2008 2:44 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Actually Simmler broke his jaw in three places. He had to have a few surgeries and was not well two days later.

by Noon on Jan 5, 2009 9:48 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

That was a nasty, nasty knockout. The moaning should show everyone why Refs jump in as fast as they do. Those 2 extra shots after he was KO’d definately added to the damage.

by Alex P on Apr 10, 2008 10:39 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

yeah, it was certainly the punch that landed when his head was on the canvas that gave him the concussion. the first hit his jaw.

by Clayton on Apr 10, 2008 10:48 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I know, Herb Dean was out of his game during this fight, he even allowed the illegal kick the guy received while down. In any case, this fight should really scream loudly at ppl that criticizes the referee when they stop a fight supposedly early. We shouldn’t be able to see this happen very often (which we don’t), it would be a major blow to the sport.

by linx on Apr 10, 2008 1:49 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Anyone know how refs are trained? It seemed to be he was in the wrong spot when the punch came.

by JB on Apr 10, 2008 2:33 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Dude. This serious scared the bah-jesus out of me. Its one thing when someone gets knocked out and its crazy to watch…. but this was just scary, weird, and eerie. I seriously was wide eyed staring at the screen the entire time this was going on. I didnt know what to make of it. I assumed the guy had a shattered jaw. Cant believe it didnt break.

by The Real DJ on Apr 10, 2008 10:40 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Having had a couple concussions here and there myself I was really freaked out when he started moaning and could not remember where the hell he was. Good to hear he made a full recovery.

That punch connected right on. Makes me wonder if that guy has some serious KO power or if it was just a matter of hitting him right on the button so to speak, I guess we will see.

by Steven on Apr 10, 2008 10:45 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I wonder what Matt Serra has to say about this?

by damaja on Apr 10, 2008 10:48 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I got a question (off point) who is going to enter the arena last…GSP (because he’s in Canada, or Serra (who is the true champ. The UFC already disrespected Matt by having an interim title (which usually occurs if someone can’t defend after 1 year!!), I feel it would be just another slap in the face to the man who destroyed (don’t give me the lucky punch BS) GSP once and hopefully will do it again. The true champ should enter the arena last!!

by kevin on Apr 10, 2008 10:48 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I imagine Serra would enter last similar to the second fight between Franklin and Silva. Hell, even GSP acknowledged that he’s not the champ.

by goatboy on Apr 10, 2008 12:08 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ok, Serra won. Sure. But GSP was off his game (tell me you know about the family issues or you just need to educate yourself a bit before you talk) and is now back on it. He will destroy Serra. It will be nice to see the little man with the big complex put in his place. GSP is the best fighter at 170, or otherwise. Serra may be carried out on a stretcher…a short one, anyway. Don’t like what I have to say—Stay on point next time.

by UrMom on Apr 10, 2008 11:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

that was the worst piece of refereeing ive ever seen.these guys put their health on the line every time they step in the octagon and it doesnt take a genius to see he was out after the first shot.i mean his arms were above his head.he couldve been seriously hurt.anyway why duid he keep hammering him on the floor anyway.spencer king/matt wiman flying knee the sandman/terry martin flying knee.they knew their opponent was out and just walked away.total respect to them and then this idiot is running around the octagoc whooing and smiling.i dont think hes got awesome power anyway he just caught him flush.herb dean should take a long look at himself.

by scott on Apr 10, 2008 10:51 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree, there is a difference in keep hitting someone while the guy is not 100% out so the referee can stop the action, but most fighters know when someone gets knocked out instantly and does not pursue for more shots. I remember the elbow anderson gave tony in cage rage, he knew right there he was out and did not continue to go forth but he really could have if he wanted to.

by linx on Apr 10, 2008 2:01 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t know. Nobody had any negative to say about the guy that won. I think the ref has to take charge. We often hear that the fighters are told even if the guy is out you don’t stop until the ref stops you; even on a tap.

I remember the Jason McDonald Chris Leben fight. J-Mac kept talking to the ref telling him Leben was out. In an interview afterwards, J-Mac said that in the locker room after the fight, Yamasaki (I think he was the ref) told J-Mac until the ref stops the fight, don’t release the hold. Even if you feel a tap, the ref needs to stop the fight. I think of Matt Hughes GSP 3. Hughes was clearly tapping but GSP held the hold until he was stopped by the ref.

by JB on Apr 10, 2008 2:39 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

It’s different when it’s submissions (almost), you have to wait for the ref to stop the fight when someone is tapping, because if you let go before the other fighter can just say I didn’t tap (which happened a lot). But some submissions such as RNC you can tell when someone is already asleep, and many time won’t tap because they’re already gone. Many times when they don’t tap the fighter would go to sleep and the fighter giving the RNC will eventually let go.
When it comes to knockouts it’s totally different, when someone is out, their out. Think of gonzaga vs cro cop, after that leg kick cro cop was out and gonzaga was still going for punches, but he had to know cro cop was gone. This is another example, the dude hit smmiler right on the button and he was out, but this time he hits him 3 times more. In this case the fighter shouldn’t just wait for the referee (although I do agree that dean was way late in that stoppage).

by linx on Apr 10, 2008 3:02 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

it really was the right thing to keep going because its not his job to know if the persons out its the refs job… if the refs not going to stop the fight he has to keep going hes trying to win, and if your going to fight you have to expect to get injured sometime its wasnt matt riddles fault at all its was the ref

by clooot on Apr 22, 2008 8:54 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I assumed he was moaning because he realized he lost and was off the show….which is still possible….and then when he came to more, he couldn’t recall 5 minutes earlier. If he works his stand-up, he could eb a competitor.

by xocgx on Apr 10, 2008 11:18 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Actually he was moaning because his jaw was broken in 3 places. He had to have it wired shut and then broke it again so had to have another surgery.

by Kate on Jan 5, 2009 9:51 PM EST up reply actions   0 recs

Herb Dean is the worst ref the UFC has on the payroll. The guy is slow to call a stoppage when a fighter is in trouble, and doesn’t bat an eyelash when illegal blows are being dealt.

by Zero Signal on Apr 10, 2008 11:19 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Herb Dean isnt on the UFC payroll. He and the other refs are hired by the NSAC.

by Louie on Apr 10, 2008 11:40 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

That was nasty. He was out before he hit the ground, and then to take three more solid blows on the ground…Damn. Herb jumped in fairly quickly, but the other fighter was very quick qith his follow up shots. The look on Dana’s face when the guy was on the ground moaning was priceless.

by SeeRed on Apr 10, 2008 11:49 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

How about that flying arm bar attempt? That was pretty ballsy. But as soon as his prefight interview stated that his “Standup was lacking at best” and saw that he was rocking red shorts, I knew he was the one that was going to get seriously KO’d.

That’s what you get for hanging around Joe Scarola!!!!!

by ViolentMike on Apr 10, 2008 11:50 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

At least Simmler will have a job with Serra to come home to, as opposed to a cheating girlfriend like Joey.

by PW on Apr 10, 2008 12:40 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Simmler actually has his own School in Worcester Mass where I train. (simmlerbjj.com)

The show did pay his medical bills when he got back. He was wearing a wire for about two weeks and has it off now. (He is seriously sick of Smoothies!)

He is a fantastic BJJ Competitor and has a real talent for teaching and encouraging students. As you have figured out, he spends alot more time training BJJ and Judo than Muay-Thai and Boxing.

Obviously, he plans to “Improve” his stand-up.

He also had (as I understand) an MRI or CAT scan after the fight and they found no problems. He is unmarried so do not worry about any starving kids or other such melodramatic UFC sob stories.

Stuff like that will happen, when ju jitsu guys decide to get in the Octagon with no kind of striking experience…. What did you all expect to happen? He was fighting with his head straight up in the air….Ray Longo should have told his ass to tuck his chin before ever coming on the show. You fight with your head straight up in the air, and your chin all exposed, of course you are going to get KTFO…. I was watching the fight and I knew it was just a matter of time until he got dropped, but I didnt think it would have been that devestating.

Before the fight, I believe he said his stand up was weak at best, or something like that….. Boy was he right! What the hell was Serra thinking sending him on the show with NO KIND OF STAND UP!

He must have asked what happened? a million times. “was that a fight or training”…. PRICELESS!!!!

by john on Apr 10, 2008 11:56 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I love it how many of you, are all complaining about Herb Dean: Why did it take so long to stop the fight? But most of you are the same ones complaining after UFN about the early stoppages. Last night should be a clear indication of why the UFN event was refereed the way it was….If not, stuff like that would happen more often.

If the Referee didnt save Karo, that could have been him…Bitching and moaning on the ground…. Maybe we should all stop Bitching about early stoppages and appreciate that the referees are acting in the best interest of a fighters safety!

by john on Apr 10, 2008 11:59 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree with you there John, but I don’t think there was anything funny with that KO.

by linx on Apr 10, 2008 2:06 PM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

I agree as well John.

However, I must say that it would have been the highlight of my mma life seeing Karo lying in the center of the octagon moaning like Sparta was. And you just KNOW that that Rogan interview with him would be priceless! He’d still argue the stoppage.

VM: U r so right about that! I would have pissed my self if that was Karo instead…Moaning: Ahhhhh, Ohhhh , you know who the F I am? Ahhhh! Oohhhhhhh!

PRICELESS!

Come on Linx! It wasnt all that bad. It was just a ju jitsu guy getting knocked out for the 1st time in his life, nothing to bad. Grant it his Jaw was broken, but I have seen fighters break there jaw in the 1st round of a fight and fight for another 2 rounds.

It really wasnt that bad, it was just that it was his 1st time being KO’ed and he did not know how to act.

Update on Dan simmler!
Guyz,
Dan is doing better now, He has had a broken jaw, it was wired shut for a couple of weeks. As far as his relationship with Matt Serra, for all I know it’s mostly BJJ as he his studying that under Matt and now owns his own bjj school in Worcester, MA.
According to him, he will be back.

Forrest was impressed with his killer instinct, but I would have to disagree. Like somebody already mentioned, I respect the fighters who walk away after they know they knocked out their opponent, like Spencer Fisher and James Irvin. Jumping on an unconscious guy to pound him three more times before the ref throws you off is not killer instinct… unless of course Forrest meant it literally. What I’ve always considered killer instinct is the characteristic of some fighters to finish a fight and not let it go to a decision.

Hey “Mike”

I had a student tell me about this post. Just wondering where you trained with me? I don’t generally train with disrespectful a-holes, so I am curious. Sure you have the right guy?

To say I didn’t even belong at the tryouts is ridiculous, I have great BJJ and Judo and train very hard. Yes my stand up isn’t where it could be but it’s hard to get enough training in when your plate is full. I have way more on mine than most I would imagine, I was given a great opportunity and took advantage of it. I had 4 fights under my belt at the time of the casting and I am not arrogant, I was taking advantage of a great opportunity.

Matt Riddle has horrible standup as well but has good ground work, he just got a strong solid punch to get through and landed it on the money. Everyone gets caught, just happened to be me on that night. Match those 32 different guys up 5 different ways and you have a different group in the house every time.

I was unconscious for the moaning, its common during a KO or when someone gets choked out. I had a concussion and didn’t remember anything prior to the hospital. I am going to be working and training my hands and feet full time and will have that edge on my side when I step back in the octagon.
-Simmler

by Simmler on Apr 15, 2008 5:01 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I’ll clear this up too, I see different posts. My jaw was broken in three places. I was KOed by that first shot, shot 2,3,4 broke my jaw in two other places on the right side. I was not conscious for the moaning, it was a result of the KO and is not at all uncommon from what I have been told. I have seen it when guys get choked out alos. Same thing I guess.

-Simmler

I think that people are probably giving you more grief than usual because of your ties to Matt Serra, and people who don’t like Serra are taking it out on you.

Out of curiosity, are you rooting for or against Matt Riddle now? Sounds like a dumb question, but I just wonder if you want him to win so it will make you look better? Or did his post-knockout antics just piss you off?

by beelz on Apr 18, 2008 10:52 AM EDT up reply actions   0 recs

Matt has a lot of potential to be good if he starts training with a good camp. I already know how everyone does so I cant comment on that, but I wish him the best in the future.
