Randy Couture: Fedor Emelianenko vs. Tim Sylvia to be 'an interesting fight'

Props: FightHype.com
Quoteworthy:
"... we'll see what happens. I think it's going to be an interesting fight. Fedor just fought a pretty tall opponent in Hong Man Choi, so obviously he's been in that mode of dealing with a guy that size, but I think Tim is a little more seasoned fighter than Hong Man has proved to be. But Hong Man wasn't easy so it will be interesting to see how Emelianenko deals with him and a pretty good indicator for me, having just fought Tim this last year, as to where I stand and how things might go if I finally get the chance to fight Fedor."
Randy Couture -- who resigned as UFC heavyweight champion in late 2007 because of his desire to fight Fedor Emelianenko (and other reasons) -- comments for the first time on the potential showdown between the Russian and Tim Sylvia. There appears to be no sour grapes. Couture is mired in a legal quagmire while the UFC granted "The Maine-iac" a release from his contract to pursue other opportunities. It's important to note that the July fight between Emelianenko and Sylvia has not been signed, according to Vadim Finkelstein. Let the charades begin.

I’m suprised he can talk with those sour grapes in his mouth.

I know Randy should not be happy.I wonder if he will fight Tim again if he wins since this one will be the best.

This will not be a good fight! This will be a dominant performance by Fedor. He is going to get the takedown easily, and Tim will never get the fight back to its feet, so Sylvia will get demolished.
Fedor is going to be much more impressive against Sylvia, than Randy and Nogueira were. The fight wont make it into the 2nd round.
Please dont start telling me that Tim has such a great takedown defense.. I already know that, and also hisw takedown defense will mean nothing against Fedor, because Fedor doesnt use the traditional wrestling takedowns. He body locks, twists his hips, and gets the takedown. Fedor’s takedown will not be able to be defended by the classic “sprawl”
Fedor will end it really fast, by submission….Hopefully b4 Fedor decides to take Sylvia’s arm back to Russia, I would like to see him G n P his face a little first. Tim needs to catch a good beatdown…He has had Fedor’s name in his mouth for years now, come July Fedor will make him pay!

lol @ gnp his face. you’re right about Fedor’s takedowns. I could see it going down that way, but not 1st round. Give the maniac some respect. Timmy is a big boy, plus he’s tall. I didn’t see the Hong Man fight but could imagine Fedor breaking a sweat trying to tip over Tim again and again, especially if he got serious about take down defense. Once Tim is on his back, its a done deal. I’ll be rooting for Tim to rain punches (cabbage style), wiping the smile off Fedor’s face and after that telling him “GO EAT SOME ICECREAM”..

Seriously, what does Sylvia have in his arsenal that Semmy Shilt doesn’t have? Sylvia and Shilts skill set are basically the same, only Tim has a better sprawl, but that will be useless against Fedor’s Sambo/Judo takedowns.
I actually think Shilt is the better striker.
My point is Fedor handled Shilt with ease in his 1st ever PRIDE fight, I really dont see Tim winning this fight.
This fight is going to take place in a cage right? If so, Tim will stupidly get tired, try to dry hump Fedor against the cage, which will fall right into Fedor’s gameplan….Body Lock, twist the hips, takedown, G n P, finishing it off with an arm bar!
Thats the whole fight right there!!! I assume they will be fighting three 5 minute rounds, and if thats the case, I promise you all Tim doesnt make it to round 3!
by john on Apr 9, 2008 1:18 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
i agree w/ youre prediction on how the fight will end, but i do think it will go 3 rnds cause tim always comes in shape and has went 5 rnds before, unless all that money goes to his head. the bodylock, twist the hips, takedown, gnp and finish w/ the armbar will probably be precisely accurate, but tim will land his share of blows and is a better mma fighter than shilt. i will give props to fedor if he wins no matter how he wins. tim is a former 2 time hw champ and is a real mma fighter.

You can compare Schilt with Tim however you want but Tim is the better fighter. If Schilt took it to the judges, Tim can take it there too. I’m not saying Tim will beat Fedor but… Can you see Fedor still standing after taking the shot Timmy ROCKED NOG with?! LOL!! THAT was the one of the hardest shots to the face (that didn’t drop the guy), I’ve ever seen in my life!! His nose was all bending. Maniac could easily follow up by pounding out Fedor after landing that MONSTER?
I want it to happen mainly so we don’t have to put up with all the hype and mgmt demands that comes with a Fedor win. Fedor + ALLL that baggage = kills me quick.
by kama kaze on Apr 9, 2008 5:24 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Sylvia has PROVEN to be a better fighter than Schilt (24-4 vs 25-14). Syvia has faced just as tough of competition, but he has actually beat some of the top guys and won 2 belts. The fact that Fedor was unable to finish Schilt with a sub like Nog and Barnett easily did, only suggests that Fedor has a harder time with very tall fighters. If Fedor takes the bombs Nog did, he won’t last long. If Sylvia can tag AA, he can tag Fedor. Just like Fedor’s management team said before, Tim is a bad matchup for Fedor. Either guy could win and it is certainly not in the bag already for Fedor.

The UFC Heavyweight division has been terrible. Look at the fighters that pride had that UFC didn’t and look at all the other organizations that have tough heavyweights caompared to the UFC. I dont need to put any names out there. Tim Sylvia sucks!

I agree. Fedor will beat Tim easier than Couture did because he is so good at submissions. I predict he will win in the first or second round by submission, probably an armbar. But I do think this is good for Randy. He can evaluate Fedor against a decent foe and a common opponent.
by brac on Apr 9, 2008 5:48 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Isn’t that pretty much how Randy gets the takedown? body locks, twists his hips, and gets the takedown. What is so different? I will agree that Fedor is very quick on his feet for his size. I don’t see him finishing Tim unless it’s by submission. Big Deal, who hasn’t submitted Tim. Fedor will either win by submission or grind out a boring decision, that’s my prediction and I am really leaning towards the submission. One thing about Randy is that he can submit his opponent but choses not to, he would rather try for the KO or TKO.

I agree! Fedor will make quick work of Tim…Like you said he will probably take his arm home with him..

Well said.
Fedor will smash Timmy if this fight happens!
And yes Couture will watch and study.
And if Timmy wins it would be kinda funny but it is a pipe dream, nothing more. Fedor would beat this Vera-humping clown 99/100 times.
I love crocop not fedor but to deny fedor’s complete skill set is just F’n stupid.

Well, Tim is not a can. He is seasoned fighter and he is really tall and heavy. He can be a problem for any fighter and despite being Fedor fan, I am worried how he will solve problems with Tim. Tim has got huge reach advantage, weight advantage, his take down defense is good and he is of course top 5 fighter. Fedor is rather short and he is natural light heavy weight, not real heavy weight. The fact that Tim once lost to Couture means nothing. I have no doubt he would beat Couture second time. He is dangerous fighter and his mind is strong. It would be really interesting fight but I cannot say I am 100% sure in this fight oputcome. Everything is possible.I would put it 80% for Fedor 20% for Tim. Had this fight happen in 2005, I would not have any doubt about Fedor win, but after few 2 years of rather relaxed time ring rust could accumulate. On the bright side, Fedor just fought Hong Man Choi who is even bigger than Tim. So, we will see how things will work. I am all for Fedor!!!!!!

Finally, someone with supposedly good skills is going to have so much pain. He will regret this fight, but if he survives, he can say he was the first to secure a fight with the mighty Fedor. Americans will be so surprised to see such ferociousness front Fedor. It’s gonna be great and Tim will be out.
Long live Fedor !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

by john on Apr 9, 2008 11:39 AM EDT reply actions 0 recs
I thought that at first, but look how it groups conversations together without the same quote repeated everytime there is a response. They just need to make the user name more prominent.
by bnf on Apr 9, 2008 11:48 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree this is better as far as organization. Make the name more promenant and the text more scanable. There is something about this text style that makes this harder to read easier to scan through it..
by grembone on Apr 9, 2008 11:59 AM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
It looks better now the names are in bold….I like the way it groups conversations. Before the names went bold i thought my MMAMANIA days were numbered as my eyes couldn’t cope with reading the small text looking for the regular posters comments. I was really as excited about posting today because it is just hard work now…but text looks better in this thread!

i mean….I really wasn’t as excited about posting…..
by ToeLock on Apr 9, 2008 12:06 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
The new format will take some getting used to for sure. I do like how the conversations are “GROUPED” together rather than tabbed and repeated over and over.
However, like a couple of people had said, the poster’s name should be a bit more prominent. Either a little larger font, or bold. Or how about, once a poster reaches 1000 comments, their name becomes bold. Or have some kind of a color scheme for the number of posts someone has.
Black = less than 1000
Blue – 1001-2000
Red = 2001 – 3000
THANK you for implementing the BOLD idea.
When I scroll thru the page, I can’t see them names of the posters. I used to be able to read the names as I scrolled because the font of the name was much bigger.
ALSO, I do not like how we can’t type paragraphs, as in skipping a line.
Also, with this new “conversation” feature, it is VERY easy to skip over new responses when re-visiting a thread. I know that I always would scroll down to my last post and continue reading from there. However, people can be responding to comments made long before that and I would never see. Now, everytime someone re-visits a thread, if they want to see every response, they need to scroll thru the WHOLE page, instead of just going to the bottom.
AND, I’m not digging this military time format either.
Other than that — I LOVE IT!!!!!!!!!!
by ViolentMike on Apr 9, 2008 12:24 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
Not happy with the suggestion that the more posts made changes the colour of the name of the writer.
Thats basically saying that the more you post the more worthwhile your view. I’m gonna say no names but some people post for the sake of posting just to get another number… sometimes 3-4 times in a row on the same topic when all that was said could be covered in one addition.
Anyway Big Tim will cause Fedor some problems with the standup for the first half of the first round then Fedor secures the take down and its all she wrote.
by Nick J on Apr 9, 2008 1:16 PM EDT up reply actions 0 recs
If you want to make 1000 posts to get to the “next color”, then feel free. I sure ain’t stopping ya.
It would save some people the time of reading
“Fedor rules”
“Take Timmy arm home”
It’s like people sometimes type retarded drunk slurs that they would shout out if they were sitting in the nose bleed section at the actual llive event.

Is Randy seriously comparing Tim Sylvia to Hong Man Choi??? I’m hardly the biggest Tim Sylvia fan, but the fact is that he’s a two-time UFC HW champion, while I feel like I should be giving some carnival barker four tickets to go into a tent and look at Choi.

He’s just compairing the sizes of the two really. A huge fighter is complicated for almost anyone, that said, Fedor will tear off Tim’s arm and beat him with it, as I’ve said before.

hong man choi is a very hard oponent to deal with. he has a wrestling background and was a good k1 competitor!
fedor couldnt take hong man down!
tim would have a hard time with hong man trust me!
fedor has also fought schilt who is a tall striker!
however schilt hasnt the takedown defense tim has!
fedor also has his big bro alecks who stikes just as good as tim and is just as well round and is 6ft6
if you want to pick a fighter for fedor to simulate big tim then hong man is the best guy alecks being second best. that is not to say they are just as good as tim is but they are both pretty good.

I believe the reason he has no sour grapes about this match is because all Randy cares about is Randy. Yoko has him so screwed in the head he doesn’t care about the fans anymore. If he cared he would STFU and fight Nog. Regardless of the outcome of Fedor/Silvia, Randy wants to fight Fedor so that’s what Randy is going to do.
I understand that Randy is old and his only interest is the Fedor fight, but come on. Instead of going down as a great UFC champion he will go down as the biggest a-hole in UFC history who lost his last fight to Fedor in some BS show.

I dont even care about Randy vs. Fedor anymore. I just want to see Fedor fight some new opponents that he didnt destroy in PRIDE already, and Tim Sylvia is with out a doubt top 5 in the world….Not a fan favorite thats for sure, but a very tough guy to beat.
Its got to a point where I hope Randy never gets to fight Fedor, u spit on the UFC and spit on all us fans, who treated him like a god after that comeback performance over Tim…..

I don’t think Fedor can win this one. He beat HMC (who???), mark Coleman (who will beat Brock) and mark hunt. Not to mention the middleweight thrown in there. Everyone will say he beat Cro Cop (who I’m a huge fan of), but look what he did in the States.
This puts a wrench in Randy’s plan, I wouldn’t be surprised if he comes in and beats NOG in august, he just better pray Fedor pulls this out (which he won’t) or that “superfight” will lose its luster

The whole point of a takedown is to go below the centre of gravity. It’ll be very hard to take down someone at the upper torso who’s that tall. Plus UFC fighters are on another level to those outside of it, as shown by the 205 guys who’ve come in with big reputations and lost. Fedor not in Randy’s league, may struggle against Tim.

Fedor by submission in the 1st round.
As for the Semmy and Hong Man Choi comparisons:
When Fedor fought Semmy, he was a mostly ground-n-pound fighter. In the years following that fight he has evolved to one of the best submission HWs.
Hong Man Choi is a true giant and Ssireum wrestler. He is 2.18m / 7ft 2, and 360lb. Tim is nowhere near that big or strong at 2.03, 260lb. Choi´s arm was nearly the size of Fedor´s leg. I am not surprised Fedor couldn´t take him down.
Also, contrary to Nogueira who stood and exchanged with Silvia, Fedor sticks and moves and is alot more active and aggressive. Silvia can lower his arms to prevent the body lock but then exposes his chin which is quite questionable. Overall though I think Fedor will opt for the submission.
by Veni on Apr 15, 2008 4:56 PM EDT reply actions 0 recs
hong man is way bigger than tim (hard to believe – his b oxing isnt as good and neither is his takedown fdefense – but that matters not – fact is he has his own takedown defense. sylvia’s is more a typical mma style (leaning weight fwd on opponent. hong man is a giant and cant (and didnt have to do that.
apples and oranges guys.
schilt has way better striking skills than either but timmy still has the best KO punnch. shilt has the best knees of the 3. they are all great at using what they have..
gotta mention after watching the schilt choi fight three times carefully each time it was clear that schilt deserved the decision – not to take away from choi for not giving schilt an easy fight but everyone who has watched carefully said schilt deservwed the W.
if the 3 fought round robin i’m not sure who would do the best. my guess is schilt cause he’s the best striker. is almost immposible to KO and fedor couldnt submit him (lthough i agree with the above point that that was an early prototype version of fedor
