Gray Maynard broken hand, out 4 to 6 weeks

Gray Maynard

Gray Maynard is on the shelf for four to six weeks because of a broken hand sustained during his lightweight bout against Frank Edgar at UFC Fight Night 13 at the Broomfield Event Center in Broomfield, Colo., on April 2.

"The Bully" used a distinct size advantage to dominate the undefeated New Jersey native en route to an impressive unanimous decision win.

It's an achievement that raised the stock significantly for the former contestant on The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) 5 in the deep 155-pound class. In fact, it's possible that he will next lock horns with Nate Diaz sometime in 2008.

Diaz submitted Maynard in the semifinals of the 16-man tournament, going on to claim the championship with a technical knockout win over Manny Gamburyan in the finals. Both fighters have shined since their stints in the mixed martial arts reality series.

Let's hope Gray gets well soon and we see the rematch. If not, Tyson Griffin has been discussed as possible next opponent for Diaz.

Either way ... win-win. Both are solid match ups.

After Diaz’s last performance I am looking forward to any match up…but Gray or Griffin would surely be a great fight.

Thats to bad to hear well at least he is not out to long im sure we will see him fight again in 3 or 4 months

by Canadian Nemisis on Apr 9, 2008 11:45 AM EDT reply actions

I think Gray would be a step down for Nate. he already beat him on Tuff and would have zero to gain by fighting him again. Not that I think Gray is weak or Nate is amazing. I just don’t think the fight makes sense.

Broken Hands only take about a month and a half to heal?

by john on Apr 9, 2008 11:57 AM EDT reply actions

My hand took about 6 weeks to heal…. (it didn’t heal right)but the the recovery & rehabilitation took about another 6 weeks

Who would have guessed that he would outbox edgar? He was throwing some sick combos, crisp hooks and had really good footwork.

its too soon for Diaz Maynard rematch. we kind of just saw it recently plus the division is stacked so it won’t be a problem finding him another good fight. how about manny?

What?? Manny cheap shot Gamburyan?

by ToeLock on Apr 9, 2008 12:10 PM EDT up reply actions

sure. they’re both short, stocky, hard hitters, and beastly grapplers. pretty evenly matched IMO.

and about the cheapshot.. lol.. he was fighting during the fight. pretty funny how it went down though.

by kama kaze on Apr 9, 2008 12:33 PM EDT up reply actions

Maynard and Manny are not both “short, stocky, hard hitters, and beastly grapplers”. Manny is short and stocky. Maynard is a BIG 155er. Gray is 5’10". Frankie Edgar is 5’6" and the height advantage looked huge. Manny is even shorter than Frankie. Gray and Manny are no where near the same height.

Also, Manny is not a “hard hitter”

by ViolentMike on Apr 9, 2008 3:08 PM EDT up reply actions

ok ok mike, i was talking out of my a$$ saying Manny was a hard hitter.

sherdog & ufc has Manny @ 5’5", Maynard @ 5’8" which is short in contrast to a 5’10" Florian or 6’ Diaz. i was using diaz as par, and frankly they both looked like midgets fighting Diaz.

how about contributing to the point of it being a good or bad fight instead of JUST dissecting? alrighty then

by kama kaze on Apr 9, 2008 6:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Ahh, Most sites say that Gray is 5’10". That’s interesting… What does UFC.com say?

As far as the fights go and me contributing, why don’t you look around this page for my other post.

“Absolutely. Nate beat Gray. Sure, both fighters are climbing the LW ladder, but Nate started out higher than Gray. I’ve been saying it for just as long as Nate Diaz, book Nate vs Tyson Griffin immediately.”

So I guess that you’re still looking for a next opponent for Gray. I sugges Thiago Tavarez.

Happy?

by ViolentMike on Apr 10, 2008 9:48 AM EDT up reply actions

VM, we’re good. you bring good stuff. just trying to have a discussion thats all. ufc.com has Gray @ 5’8" .. get this: lol@sherdog has nate diaz @ 5’8". tavares makes sense after an edgar win. theres so many guys out there, it’d be hard to mess up matching up the LWs.

by kama kaze on Apr 10, 2008 4:08 PM EDT up reply actions

I wrestled with Gray at MSU. We are the same height, 5’8’’.

Am I the only 1 who finds this picture of gray disturbing? Looks like they are about to make out. Gray is gazing into his eyes while the other dude, is holding him ever so gently..lol

I don’t know….but i was thinking the other guy kinda looks like a Meth head rent boy!

This could be MMA first Civil Partnership.

what a disturbing picture.

“Grey let me rub your sore nipple while I gaze into your eyes, honey”
Who is that guy? He looks familiar.

I would love to see Grey break that tooth pick of a human being Nate Diaz.

other guy is miguel torres fools

by LongIslandguy on Apr 9, 2008 12:30 PM EDT reply actions

Tyson would be a great fighter for Diaz. I don’t think Nate has fought anyone as strong as Tyson yet. It will be interesting to see how he deals with it.

The meth head is the wec bantam champ miguel torres lol. He does look like a meth head though

Just seen on another site Alves is next in line for title shot at WW after Fitch? Any truth in this?

by UKmmaBOY on Apr 9, 2008 12:49 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah its true. He has just been informed by Joe Silva, that he is next in line for a title shot after Ficth, and deservingly so!

by john on Apr 9, 2008 1:11 PM EDT up reply actions

REALLY??? I wish that Marcus Davis wasn’t booked to fight. Alvez vs Davis for a #1 contender fight at the same event as Fitch vs GSP/Serra would have been better. I wonder if Alvez plans on sitting out the rest of the year and wait for his shot?

by ViolentMike on Apr 9, 2008 3:10 PM EDT up reply actions

Marcus vs. Alves cant be booked because Davis is already booked to fight Swick in June (that fight has been confirmed). So to say Alves will fight Davis for the next #1 contender slot, would be like the UFC saying that the swick fight is pointless. they cant start planning too far ahead like that. They probably do, but they cant release that kind of info to the public. If Davis gets by Swick (which I assume he will) I would be surprised if they do have Davis and Alves duke it out for #1 contender because Alves is a real fighter and will not want to sit around until 2009!

by john on Apr 9, 2008 3:51 PM EDT up reply actions

I know, I can’t stand the fact that Marcus Davis is fighting Mike Swick. Marcus Davis should be fighting guys much higher on the ladder than Mike Swick.

by ViolentMike on Apr 9, 2008 4:06 PM EDT up reply actions

Yeah I cant stand Swick and I too think davis is above him, but at least stylistically Swick will make for a good opponent. not too many guys like to stand and Trade with Marcus, at least Swick’s dumb enough to try it, so we should get a nice Highlight courtesy of the Irish Hand Grenade!

by john on Apr 9, 2008 4:41 PM EDT up reply actions

yeah I recognized miguel torres right away apparenttly that guy is abeast and proved it in his last fight…
Although I didnt think Gray outboxed Frankie it seemed Edgar had much more crisp boxing and better timing and accuracy in his combos, Gray was just slugging for the most part and in a few exchanges you can tell Gray didnt want to keep trading with Edgar cuz Edgar was winning the blows, hence the Wrestling clinic on the smaller man

Mania, when your looking for pics of fighters, do you look for the funniest pics. I am not complaining at all…I think some of the pics that u upload to this site are funny as hell.

My question is, do you do it on purpose, or does it just happen?

by john on Apr 9, 2008 1:57 PM EDT reply actions

Is this a coming out of the closet pic?

by the_mexicutioner on Apr 9, 2008 2:20 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t think Diaz should fight him again, he needs to keep fighting higher rank fighters, he already beat Gray Maynard, I don’t think that would be a good match now, maybe in the future.

by Diego on Apr 9, 2008 2:34 PM EDT reply actions

Absolutely. Nate beat Gray. Sure, both fighters are climbing the LW ladder, but Nate started out higher than Gray. I’ve been saying it for just as long as Nate Diaz, book Nate vs Tyson Griffin immediately.

by ViolentMike on Apr 9, 2008 3:12 PM EDT up reply actions

Even though Gray is making some real improvement to his game, I don’t want to see him fight Diaz yet. Gray should tangle with Aurelio. That would really be a good litmus test for Gray. Diaz is one step above Gray right now.

by RealDrew on Apr 9, 2008 6:17 PM EDT up reply actions

Manny G. should get to fight Diaz soon, way before Maynard does.

by THORAZINE on Apr 9, 2008 3:03 PM EDT reply actions

If they had a child together it would be the most beautiful baby in all the world..

by Nokimono on Apr 9, 2008 3:07 PM EDT reply actions

Diaz should fight Joe Lauzon and Maynard should fight tyson griffin. Daiz and Lauzon are games it would be a action packed fight and the winner would be very high on the L.W ladder. the Maynard griffin fight is two good wrestlers and both are improving strikers, the fight could be one of the best L.W fights of the year.

by ckrump on Apr 9, 2008 3:43 PM EDT reply actions

Manny shouldn’t fight diaz because diaz has beat better fights then Manny. Manny should fight Kurt “batman” Pellegrino that would see how good manny is and to see if he can handle a good wrestler, striker, and batman is a Black belt in JJ. That fight would be full of takedowns and crazy strikes.

by ckrump on Apr 9, 2008 3:48 PM EDT reply actions

Feeding manny to pellegrino would be a great way to get BATMAN back on track. If anyone thinks that Manny could have defeated Batman like Diaz did, they are just kidding themselves. Kurt is a very tough and skilled guy, Manny isnt!

by john on Apr 9, 2008 4:43 PM EDT up reply actions

Looks like the guy in that picture is about to kiss Gray!

by bigkat on Apr 9, 2008 4:44 PM EDT reply actions

I would say its just a weird picture… if it wasn’t for Maynard’s back Tattoo. I’m covered and I would never get a Tat that pointed at my ass.

by sycboi on Apr 9, 2008 9:09 PM EDT reply actions

i dont think gray the butt ugly jaw line gi joe toy lookin motherf**ker should get a crack at diaz , diaz won that show looked impressive doin it and he didnt even get put on a main event yet , lauzon lost that shit and got to fight florian , it just shows that ufc favors fighters
