MMA on FoxNews: Fair and balanced?

I'm not a firm believer in children competing in mixed martial arts fights, but Sean Hannity takes it way too far:

what do you expect from the most conservative news channel in the nation?

by Chadx23 on Apr 7, 2008 2:02 PM EDT reply actions

Sean Hannity is one of the dumbest human beings i have ever heard speak. Every topic he covers involves him speaking over whomever he is debating. Quality, not quantity, of words said wins a debate, Sean.

Dammit, no sound on my computer at work. Can’t wait to get home and see what this blowhard has to say. I’m prejudging this, but from your intro Mania it looks like another person completely uneducated in MMA talking out of the side of their neck.

by chefdaddy on Apr 7, 2008 2:03 PM EDT reply actions

Hannity is trippin a little too hard. He doesn’t know alot about mma obviously. If you take the cage away the story changes. He sees the cage and automatically is taken back to the 90’s when in was bare knuckle. (which they should do again for adults) He does take it to far.

by protecdvs.com on Apr 7, 2008 2:03 PM EDT reply actions

I caught my 10 year old in an armbar yesterday. I could have pounded him out but he looked like had enough. Seriously though, I think throwing young kids in the cage is a little too much. I’m not opposed to young kids training but I don’t think they should start fighting until around 15 or so.

by Iss-man on Apr 7, 2008 2:05 PM EDT reply actions

No! They should be in a ring so they can fall out while grappling and break their necks.
People like Hannity are too stupid to see the cage as a safety feature. Just like they are too stupid to judge this sport.
Anyway, McCain already changed his tune on MMA after he learned of the new rules.
Faux News is a joke.

by Landowner on Apr 7, 2008 2:16 PM EDT reply actions

are you f’ing kidding me…. first of all, that one boxing commission guy comes in and just talks complete BS, then hanity gets OWNED and has no response when the trainer claims it poses less injuries than boxing… this is rediculous

by vv7 on Apr 7, 2008 2:17 PM EDT reply actions

Hannity definitely takes it overboard, even refers to it as “bare knuckle fighting.” However, I agree that those kids are too young for MMA. They need to master single forms of martial arts and the discipline that is usually taught in that format. These kids aren’t ready to use the things they learn responsibly.

by cmon on Apr 7, 2008 2:17 PM EDT reply actions

Well, that’s Sean Hannity for you. He is notorious for not only have a lack of fact checking, but of pretty much making of ‘facts’ as he goes along. He also takes non correlating data, uses fuzzy math on it, and comes out with ‘proof liberals are the devil’ or some such. Just remember that most FOX viewers will be dead of old age in the next 5-10 years anyway!

by xocgx on Apr 7, 2008 2:28 PM EDT reply actions

I think uneducated MMA people always say its brutal or barbaric. It is lack of knowledge. I do think that kids shouldnt fight in bouts yet, they should just train.

by thetuf75 on Apr 7, 2008 2:36 PM EDT reply actions

I completely agree that this sport is not for kids, but Fox just gets it wrong from the start. Sheesh, and the way they he says at the end, “you’re rationalizing.” ridiculous.

I agree with Iss-man. I don’t believe kids under 15 should be involved
Hannity’s a tool!!! He’s trying to make the cage sound brutal

First off, the kids haven’t even mastered 1 martial art, much less mma. Kids should train for mma, not particpate. And as for the news coverage, eeeewwww. I watch fox news more than any other news channel, but good grief, there so stupid some times. Better than the clinton news channel.

by Toms Bombs on Apr 7, 2008 3:34 PM EDT reply actions

I think it’s stupid having children compete in MMA. As much as any of us would like to deny it, MMA has a component of brutality to it. There are also components of skill and technique. If we are teaching children MMA, we need to focus on the skill and technique aspects of MMA. Children should wait till they are older to compete.

by Andy on Apr 7, 2008 3:40 PM EDT reply actions

Uneducated MMA people like Hannity shouldn’t comment on MMA it really just perpetuates other uneducated MMA people to past judgement without understanding the sport.

I for one, so far think it’s ok for kids to compete in MMA. I like what I hear about the rules n protective gear and would like to find out more before giving my stamp of approval.

by THORAZINE on Apr 7, 2008 3:47 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t dislike Sean Hannity but he’s just not educated on the subject. I honestly think he views it as the “old” UFC with basically no rules, weight classes, etc. He absulutely doesn’t understand the “A” in MMA. I’m not real sure what to think about young children competing…but I see nothing wrong in training.

by Greggo on Apr 7, 2008 3:48 PM EDT reply actions

I don’t see why people would be so offended by this. There are kids already fighting in kickboxing, boxing, and other various frms of martial artist fighting. This kids in this mma video are doing the exact same thing only they can take thier opponent down (wrestling). They can’t punch to the face on the ground. Also as noted the gloves they are wearing are bigger then the standard mma gloves.

I think you’re more prone to get serious injuries with almost any other sport more than what these kids will be recieving. I watched this video for 45 seconds and was excited to see these kids getting to do something I would have loved to do when I was that age.

by protecdvs.com on Apr 7, 2008 3:52 PM EDT reply actions

Looked alot more to me like organized sparring, MMA is becoming mainstream and it is very easy for the blind to lead blind in ignorant attacks that have no merit, the trainer there said it had less injuries then bowling… I guess there is no need today for reporters to have any facts, just an uneducated opinion

of course it’s brutal. should kids be competing in a sport where the oject is to pound the other kid out in submission? no. but on another note, kids break bones, die, lose fingers, with shit like skateboarding and hockey as well.

by cageFightingKip on Apr 7, 2008 4:51 PM EDT reply actions

My 8 year old brother spars with 13 year olds in his karate class and gets punched in the face wearing head gear and gloves…occaisionally he has had his nose busted and bleeding…not broken, and so have many of the other kids. Sparring teaches smaller kids how to effectively defend themselves against much larger attackers…sometimes their insructor will even have a 3 on 1 sparring. Sean Hannity would get owned by any of these little kids. This Kid MMA is just adding all apsects (instead of just the striking like in my brother’s class) of the sport.

The media always blows everything out of proportion….how about all the child molesters and kid rapists out there? What kid do you give the better odds of escaping a pervert or “kidnapper” out there in the REAL WORLD…one that knows some sort of self defense? Or one who watches Barney all day and can’t wait for the next “(cr)Happy” meal at McDonalds!

This is a prime example of some uneducated person taking little bits and pieces of knowledge and running with it to create a story. MMA is not what it was. Do I think 6 is a little young sure. But seriously they have thicker gloves, head gear, shin guards, and a cup. With all that it makes it no dangerous than football. People like this are really just a bunch of conservative morons who would rather see there kid get his ass beat on a football field.

I think the reporter dude is a douche, I’ll start with that. However, I don’t for a second think kids that young should actually be in a cage fighting. When those kids turn 16, and they are legally old enough to drive, then they can fight. Let kids learn MMA at whatever age, 3 years old, 6 years old, whatever. But, dont let them fight until they are older.

you need someone articulate like joe rogan to be defending MMA when its being attacked… DW will throw in too many f bombs and start challenging people to a fight

and this guy struggled getting his point across while that juackass repeatedly interupted him and talked across him

in all seriousness with the headgear and pads on it didnt look that dangerous a sport

kids boxing is very dangerous but the match shown looked a lot like you would see in a BJJ gym

the cage gives the illusion of danger but its far safer than a ring which can be fallen out of

american football, rugby ice hockey boxing wrestling are way more dangerous than this for kids

by nate diaz on Apr 7, 2008 5:25 PM EDT reply actions

i actually cant wait until my son is old enough for the sport. I will have no problem putting my own child in there to fight, and it is safer than boxing. How many boxers are walking around shaking and cant even dress themselves because of getting pounded over the years? Sean Hannity should have to fight Dana White before he has the right to down-talk mma

by sean hannity is a dirt bag on Apr 7, 2008 6:00 PM EDT reply actions

Why are people saying people shouldn’t train until they are 15. It seems like a rather arbertrary age to pick. Is a 15 year old really that much more prepared than a 14 year old? That being said I don’t believe that young kids should compete in MMA, or boxing for that matter, but they should be allowed to train. As for this report, if you can call it that, it is totally biased and completely uneducated. It had a guy talking about how brutal a sport is with no knowledge of the rules and safety regulations and precausions. Then he refuted fact after fact while continuing to contend that it was brutal and not safe when evidence to the contrary was presented to him. Fox is news for idiots by idiots.

by DB on Apr 7, 2008 6:18 PM EDT reply actions

Hannity’s reporting was terrible. We can all agree on that.

Everybody seems to be OK with Martial arts including sparring sessions and point scoring competitions. I am.

But the debatable topic is: is it ok for young kids fighting in mma competition @ 100% goal being submit the other kid? It might not be what you would chose for your kid but is it ok to have? The line has to be drawn somewhere. Safety is top issue among others.

IMO: Its definitely not for my kids and not worth finding out what we all might have guessed, that its too dangerous.

Hannity is a douche. Does anyone know of a way to contact him specifically, like “fan mail” or something. He needs to get his facts straight instead of just speaking as loud as he can to win an argument.

by Luke64 on Apr 7, 2008 7:29 PM EDT reply actions

You know what, watching this makes me want to write a letter to the network. That was the most unbelievable monstrosity of an “interview” I’ve ever witnessed with regard to MMA. The man that was brought on to defend the sport wasn’t even granted the opportunity to talk. The poor guy wasn’t “rationalizing” anything – he was trying to state the proven facts about this sport and Hannity wasn’t having any of it. He completely wasted that guy’s time.

Kids are perfectly capable of training MMA in the same way they’re perfectly capable of boxing, or wrestling, or playing hockey, or playing rugby, or taking Tae Kwon Do/karate/kung fu. The same risk of injury and long-term effects are present in each one of those sports in much the same as they are in MMA. The kids shown in the tape were fully geared with gloves, headgear and shin pads. Worst that’s gonna happen is a kid gets the wind knocked out of him or maybe twists an ankle or breaks a rib or something – all of this can happen in other contact sports, or even in the HOME – which is where most child accidents occur ANYWAY.

I’m appalled and I feel very badly for the gentleman who was interviewed. This is a disgrace. Sure, the object might be to knock a guy out, but isn’t it the same in full contact boxing matches or karate tournaments? Why don’t people have problems with kids signing up for that?

Fuck you, Sean Hannity. Maybe they should ban douches taking up airwaves too.

by djmatt on Apr 7, 2008 7:51 PM EDT reply actions

Whoever came up with this kids mma thing is a dumbass. It’s one thing to allow your kids to train MMA, but to compete in a fully fledged mma match is insane.

Those parents that allow their kids to fight in the cage are horrible parents and should be seen to by social services. They should be ashamed of themselves. Let your kids train without competing, as they get older, let them compete in amateurs.

Why the heck is anybody surprised that this was covered in this manner? Hannity is a complete prat, but kids mma fights is just plain stupid.

by Xad on Apr 7, 2008 8:43 PM EDT reply actions

I have been a fan and a defender of the UFC and MMA since it started back in the early 90es. I’m not a fan of adult mma for children. I don’t see it as kids being exploited but the doctor that speaks has a point that kids are still developing and shouldn’t be in full mma fights. I would be all for a version of mma, maybe just outlaw ground and pound for kids. If the fight goes to the ground kids have to wrestle or use submission and the ref should have the responsibility to stop the fight if a kid gets caught in a submission not when they tap.

by Jigga4713 on Apr 7, 2008 8:44 PM EDT reply actions

Yeah the one thing i will agree with what miller says is that kids arent capable of mastering one discipline let alone all of them. It is not right, sign your kids up for one of the individual disciplines, arguably they will be a better fighter in the end anyways. This type of stuff is what gives the sport a negative public image, especially when the dad’s defending are slightly sub-par in the intellect department.

they make it sound like the kids havn’t been fed in 2 weeks and they throw them in the cage and lock them in.

also he says, shouldn’t we as adults look out for the welfare of children?? thank you captain obvious, who would disagree with that?? heres a thought let the PARENTS decide what their children should or shouldn’t do. this isn’t russia.

Although I feel 6 years old is a bit young, maybe when they get into middle school years.. But if its controlled, and like the trainer said, no strikes above the shoulders while on the ground, I think its alright, and maybe even grow in a few years. Just wonder if there are any Muay Thai knees or elbow strikes allowed?? That would cause serious damage. If they maintained it as a discipline, and promote it as such, I think its fine.

And yeah it’s violent. All sports are violent and are based on some type of violent means. Think of all the people that have been brutalized in football! Injuries in boxing. I joined wrestling when i was in Kindergarten and it was a good recreational sport that teaches kids to keep it in the ring and off the streets.
