UFC Fight Night 13: 'Protect yourself at all times'

While most of the talk from UFC Fight Night 13 revolves around Steve Mazzagatti's stoppage of the Karo Parisyan/Thiago Alves fight, there was another controversy involving Karo's cousin on the untelevised portion of the undercard.

Some friendly advice to future opponents of Manny "Pitbull" Gamburyan: Listen to the referee's instructions and protect yourself at all times!

first – and what a cheap shot – lost a ton of respect for manny

If thats’ what you have to resort to then you must have no confidence in yourself. He should have just punched him at the weigh ins if he wanted to get the drop on him.

Things happen fast in the ring, but that’s stupid.

Dana should give BJ a few minutes with Manny “British Prostitute” Gamburyan just to rip his girly shoulder apart again.

by PW on Apr 7, 2008 9:54 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

You’d think he’d be confident enough in his own abilities to beat Jeff Cox without resorting to that. I heard that Manny had a cheap shot at UFN, but hadn’t seen it. What a little punk. If Jeff Cox ever gets to fight in the UFC again, backstage, he should be allowed to run up on Manny from behind and just hit him in the back of the head with all he got.

Karo or Manny being disrespectful or taking cheap shot? Who would have ever guessed? Oh yeah, all of us.

WHATS GOING ON HERE? ARE WE LOSING THE “QUOTE” FEATURE??? Or is the site experiencing some techinical difficulties? I really hope that its the latter of the two, because losing the “quote” button would be a mistake in my opinion, its used to keep conversations going and to point out exactly what we are referring to.

by ViolentMike on Apr 7, 2008 9:55 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree with Tiger Mike. Fuck the sportsmanship, this is a fight. The ref does not say “you ready…..you ready….tap gloves…..and fight”.

Save the love for the weigh in or the end of the fight.

by kavedaddy on Apr 7, 2008 9:55 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I agree with violentmike I would quote him but there is no button. Anyways, about manny the guy is just a cheater. I bet he is on steroids too.

To feign the touch and then throw a kick is a dirty cheap trick.

I know its not illegal but if he didn’t want to touch he should run out like GSP and take the centre of the ring.

Small things like this set MMA back so far to people who don’t follow the sport than any free fight card will promote it.

by UKmmaBOY on Apr 7, 2008 10:00 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

That is lame and it was a crappy kick. Congrats.

by Jason on Apr 7, 2008 10:00 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Man that was cheap. What a dick. Who fakes touching gloves. If your not going to touch gloves at least come out with your hands up to show your ready to fight not be buddy buddy.

Never have been a fan of the opening glove tap at the beginning of fights. Kinda’ lame that he faked it though.

by jess on Apr 7, 2008 10:10 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I dislike it only because he went out and faked that he was going to touch gloves. That’s disrespectful to show a sign of respect and then take advantage of it.

by Shadyone33 on Apr 7, 2008 10:13 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

that’s BS. the glove tap or whatever at the beginning of a fight is a good gesture and a show of respect. If he had any skill, he’d be able to throw that kick without it being a cheap shot after faking the glove tap. If you don’t want to tap gloves, fine, but don’t fake it to take a cheap shot.

You’re right…however there are certain things in life that go un-written, and that is one of them.

A cheap shot is a cheap shot….and THAT WAS a cheap shot!

If i was the next person to fight Manny… Id wait for him to extend his glove out then just kick him straight in the head and attack. What a punk!

by ToeLock on Apr 7, 2008 10:23 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I can’t stand Manny or even to a bigger extent, Karo, but with that said, some fighters want to tap gloves after the bell, after any good shot, after the round and at the begining of every round. The only appropriate time to touch gloves is when the ref says “ok touch gloves.” It was a big time cheap shot, but be ready!!!

by kevin on Apr 7, 2008 10:23 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Is everyone sure Cox hadn’t done something to another opponent that would make Manny think thats a good idea. Hitting someone after the bell or holding a move after a stoppage?

I never saw any hint of him being a cheap shot artist like that before. As a matter of fact I would have expected Manny to be a stickler for respect.

by J on Apr 7, 2008 10:25 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I’m aware that the fight starts when the ref starts it. If you choose not to touch gloves then that’s fine but don’t fake it. Manny was a dirty, boring, lay and pray fighter on TUF5, and it’s obviously he’s still dirty. I can’t wait until he fights someone decent and gets owned.

haha…that’s pretty lame, but it’s nothin’ that gets the underwear cranked way up my crack like some of you. it’s a fight, the ref says fight, you fight. it’s not like that was a super serious kick anyways…still a little lame on manny’s part though..

by Phil Baloni on Apr 7, 2008 10:37 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Cheap shot, bottom line.

That’s like putting your hand out, pulling it back at the last second, and then taking a free swing at a guy.

by R-Dizzle on Apr 7, 2008 10:43 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

You people really think it was that bad? lol It really wasn’t. I mean it would be different if he through a big punch of kick to the head. That kick looked like it didn’t do much more than push Cox away from him. I do agree it was a cheap shot, but it’s nothing to get upset about.

They should just have to touch gloves when the ref is telling them the rules and what not.

During Silva/Hendo, Hendo extended his hand but Silva did not. When Hendo pulled his arm back, Silva moved to begin. That’s the way it’s done. Touch.. or not, but faking to touch gloves is not an MMA move. It is cheap, backyard and cowardly.

by DJ on Apr 7, 2008 10:51 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I understand the instructions to “Protect Yourself at ALL Times”, but to put your hand out to tap gloves then drop it to take a kick…..I can only think of one word……BUSH! I would like to think a guy as talented as Manny wouldn’t need to resort to this childish action to get the upperhand in the fight. Truth be told, he would have won the fight regardless. And the people out there saying that “This is a Fight” and “you don’t have to tap glove, then fight”, that is BULLS**T and you know it. You don’t wanna tap up, FINE, but don’t pretend to then take a cheap shot because any PRO fighter knows, that is BUSH!!!!!!!!!!!

by XeroKool_v1 on Apr 7, 2008 11:04 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

What a cheap shot. I realize fighters need to “protect yourself at all times”, but there is a common respect that if a fighter reaches out to touch gloves, you either touch gloves or wave it off. Manny is a punk.

I must say I completely disagree with toms bombs on this one. Just because manny can’t throw a kick any better than stephen hawking doesnt mean the intention wasn’t there. I do definitely agree with DJ about the hendo/silva fight, if you are a fighter that saves the show of respect for after the fight (which i can totally understand) just walk in with your hands up and showing that you are going to bring it. I think after manny’s show of cowardice joey silva should give him a shot at a top contender, i.e. feed that little girl to the wolves. Someone like Thiago Tavares, Spencer Fisher, or Roger Huerta would do just fine.

by MMAsubb on Apr 7, 2008 11:46 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

I had mad respect for Manny but after that incident, it’s completely gone, he’s a piece a shit no doubt about it…If you don’t wana touch gloves before the fight then don’t stick your hand out and then go after the guy..just go after him straight so he knows you aint putting your hand up and he can defend himself…that was extremely disrespectful and embarrassing..

by XxXFactor on Apr 7, 2008 11:54 AM EDT reply actions   0 recs

It was obviously a cheap shot that pretty much any respectable fighter wouldn’t do, but all I’m trying to say is it’s not like it was an illegal blow or anything. fighters fight for different reasons, some for the money, some for glory, some to go have fun in a battle, and some just want to win by any means. Do I agree with the kick? No, and I see why it should be frowned upon. But I also don’t think it was that big of a deal, just unsportsman like.

by Toms Bombs on Apr 7, 2008 12:12 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

Wouldnt have bothered me at all if Manny hadnt done the whole juke glove tap. If he just came out and threw a spinning back kick first off, then thats good in my book.

Manny showed no class, guess it runs in the family with him and Karo. Not a good nite for Armenia as there countryman Roman got dominated by serra-trained George Sotiropoulis. While it’s not as bad as Babulu’s keeping the choke on david heath, im sure the ufc will say something to manny. As long as we get to see him have a rematch with nate diaz so diaz can either rear naked or triangle choke his @$$ i’ll be fine.

Manny truely showed himself to be a low class fighter with that move. sad to see

by Bobby O'shea on Apr 7, 2008 12:47 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

NOTHING wrong with what he did. The fight is on when its on. Plenty of time to tap glove, shake hands, hug, bow, grab a$$, light up insence, after the fight. too bad he didn’t KO Cox with that kick. That would’ve been funny as hell.

by kama kaze on Apr 7, 2008 12:55 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

It was a poor display of sportsmanship. Another example of Manny being just like his cousin – full of himself and not paying attention to the big picture.

WAKE UP DUMBFUCK. You’re on display trying to sell this sport to the public as a SPORT. Faking a display of sportsmanship and throwing a kick when the guy reaches out to tap up is as WEAK as it GETS. If you want to just scrap and be a retard, why don’t you go bare-knucks with Kimbo on YouTube and stop taking airwaves away from people who give a shit about MMA.

by djmatt on Apr 7, 2008 12:59 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

everyone keeps saying “its a fight..” but its more of a sporting event than a fight which means that you respect your opponent. Don’t act like your going to touch gloves and then kick him in the chest… Anderson Silva the classiest guy, didn’t touch gloves with Dan Henderson before they fought but he made it known to Dan that he made no intention of doing so (HE DID NOT KICK HIM IN THE CHEST..LOL)

When you’re going to do a cheap shot, you might as well make it count. That crappy kick hardly landed and the dude wasn’t even defending himself. He’s not only a low-life, but he’s not even good at it. That dude needs to do a self-inventory.

So what you are saying is that cheap shots are okay…unless you knock out your opponent. Manny should just be a dirty fighter until something really bad happens, like hurting someone who is trying to show you sportsmanship, and then Manny should stop those types of antics. Nice logic.

Whether it knocked him out or missed him completely isn’t the point. But you can be sure it wasn’t meant to tickle him. (On second thought, maybe Manny does want to tickle cox.) Cox’s hand was up and Manny clearly tried to take an open shot at that exposed side.

Another point is this was an early undercard. These guys weren’t brought into the center prior and this was their chance to shake hands.

by PJJ on Apr 7, 2008 2:27 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

They should feel Manny to Anderson Silva for that. better yet, right after Herb dean tells them it’s on he goes for a coffee & lets Anderon finish that arm for good.

That was pathetic. Someone needs to tell Manny to stop calling out Nate Diaz. At this point in their careers Diaz is on a meteoric rise, Manny is still fighting cans, and hitting them with cheap shots. Manny does not deserve to fight Nate again. He was running his mouth about how he took Nate down and was going to pound him out…. I call BS!!! Everyone takes Nate down, pounds on him for a little and then they get CHOCKED!!! Which is exactly what would have happened to manny if his shoulder didnt pop out the socket.

Diaz needs to fight Griffin next, manny would be lucky if he could beat Alvin Robinson!

I believe that fighters should tap gloves when they are talking to the refs, not once the time starts. Tapping gloves started out back when two friends had to fight to show their love for one another.

It is almost cliche now, everyone does it. They talk smack for two months and than touch gloves like they are close friends.

But Manny on the other hand, that was just a flat out PUSSY move, coming out with your hand out and then throwing a cheap ass kick that doesnt even connect.

If your gona do something like that, take a note from Herring and knock the guy out, dont flash, knock the guy out.

People at the Sherdog forums were really complaining about this. Uncontrollably. I came on here expecting that some reasonable people would believe that Gamburyan’s “cheap shot” wasn’t worth the attention it was getting. I’m disappointed to find out that this place is just as furious about it as the Sherdog forum is. Funny thing is, Evan Tanner did the same thing. How often do you hear about his “cheap shot” on David Loiseau? He touched gloves and bum-rushed Loiseau. I think you all will forget about Gamburyan’s “antics” in a month or two. If you carry it past that, well, you’re probably more so a fan of drama and controversy than you are a fan of mixed martial arts. Get over it, people.

This is the same ass clown who ripped Babalu on interviews, and he pulls a stunt like this. I really don’t have that big of a problem with what he did, because the fight starts as soon as the ref says fight. But if you’re going to rip other fighters for cheap shots and take one yourself that pretty much makes you a five star asshole in my opinion.
