Strikeforce: "Shamrock vs Cung Le" main event results and live commentary:
Round one: Villasenor jabs. Jensen answers. Jensen misses a kick. Villasenor ties him up. Jensen falls to the mat and pulls guard. Lots of squirming but no action. Villasenor grabs the cage. No action. Crowd rains down boos. Yamasaki just standing and staring. Villasenor postures up and lands a punch. Jensen gets to his feet. Stinging left drops Jensen who quickly recovers and answers with a combo that backs Villasenor up. Both fighters going for broke. Crushing right from Villasenor KO's Jensen into a lifeless heap.
Final result: Joey Villasenor defeats Ryan Jensen via KO (4:45 R1)
-end-
Round one: They meet in the center and briefly exchange but Cole quickly tosses Kyle to the mat. Cole in side control and leaps into an armbar. Kyle has nowhere to go and taps.
Final result: Wayne Cole defeats Mike Kyle via submission/armbar (0:42 R1)
-end-
Kimbo Slice makes a guest appearance in the center of the ring to a standing ovation. That ovation quickly goes to uncomfortable silence when Kimbo mistakenly thinks he's in San Francisco. Goldberg gives a tepid interview and sends him on his way. No announcement from Kimbo about his next opponent just a quick cameo for a cheap pop (as Mick Foley would say).
Round one: Lemley stalks and lands a jab. Melendez answers with a hook that stuns him. Melendez with a huge takedown. Lemley tries for the guillotine but Melendez escapes. Melendez postures up and Lemley tries to triangle him so Melendez plops down into guard. Lemley again looks for the triangle and Melendez goes north south and back again. Lemley avoiding the mount.  Melendez gets some room and does some punching. Back into guard. Hammer fists score for Melendez. Back into guard and Melendez again lands with strikes from the top. Lemley is cut. Melendez is pouring it on. Herb Dean letting it go. Lemley seconds away from being stopped and gets saved by the bell.
Round two: They trade on their feet and Lemley eats a HUGE right. And another. Melendez takes him down. Lemley in guard. Lemley taking punishment. Melendez to side control and fires at will. Lemley's face looks like corned beef hash. Herb Dean takes his time but eventually stops the punishment.ÂÂ
Final result: Gilbert Melendez defeats Gabe Lemley via TKO/strikes (2:18 R2) to retain the Strikeforce lightweight championship.
-end-
Round one: Fickett charges and they tie up. Lim grabs Fickett's crank. Center of the cage and Lim eats a left but answers with an uppercut. Fickett with a big takedown. Lim stands straight up into a guillotine. Fickett straddles him and sinks it DEEP. Lim tries for the slam but is too far gone. He falls to the mat and taps.
Final result: Drew Fickett defeats Jae Suk Lim via submission/guillotine choke (1:14 R1)
-end-
After the fight Jake Shields gets called into the ring by a zealous Goldberg and they announce the Drew Fickett/Jake Shields fight for June 14. Both fighters talk tough about the contest but Fickett goes a little too far and predicts it will end in death by rear naked choke. To be sure everyone takes him seriously he then screams "ONE OF US WILL DIE!" Good stuff.
Round one: An exchange of kicks opens the bout. Frank catches a spinning back kick and grabs Le's waist. Cung escapes and lands a combo. Stinging jab by Frank.  More kicks and a Le combo lands. Frank looks to shoot but decides against it. Punches and kicks are flying! Both fighters look crisp. Frank brings the heat and Le answers. Le's speed is unbelievable. A spinning roundhouse by Le gets caught by Frank who dumps him to the cage. Le is bleeding from the mouth courtesy of a Shamrock knee. More exchanges and Frank looks like he's getting the better of them. Round ends with Shamrock taunting Le.
Round two: A Le kick sends Shammy's mouthpiece flying. The pace slows but Le is starting to get the better of the striking. Le lands a right hook. Frank answers with a combo. Le finding his range with the kicks. Frank is taking punishment. Every exchange sees Le get sharper. Frank refuses to shoot. A Le kick deadens Shamrock's leg. Round ends with Le pushing the pace.
Round three: Le stiffens Shamrock with a liver kick. Then a combo for Le. Frank is getting owned on his feet. Le sweeps Frank off his feet who crashes to the mat. Frank is in trouble. Out of nowhere Shammy lands a huge right. Le is staggered. Frank attacks with a flurry. Shammy pouring it on. Le is in danger but fights back and lands a devastating body kick. Then a tremendous kick to the jaw. Frank is rocked. Le on the verge of ending it as time expires.
Round four: Frank Shamrock is unable to answer the bell. Cung Le is declared the winner by TKO.
Final result: Cung Le defeats Frank Shamrock via TKO/Doctor Stoppage to win the Strikeforce middleweight championship.
-end-
Shammy reports to the crowd of 16,326 that he suffered a broken arm and could not continue.

The closer we get, the more I can see Frank Shamrock’s point of view on this fight. However, I still think Cung Le is going to take this one. It’s certainly his biggest test, and his success in this fight is going to hinge on either Frank Shamrock committing to a stand-up bout, or Cung Le’s ability to avoid the takedown via strikes and throws. Either way, I expect that it will be good.
Cung Le via decision.

I had a dream that Frank Shamrock won the fight via submission in the 2nd round. Well, I thought it said TKO (strikes) in the 2nd rnd but I remember thinking oh he must have had trouble with Cung Lees stand up so he submitted him. So I am pretty sure it was submission. I am just posting this now just i case I am right and no one beleives that i had the dream. Well, heres to hoping!

wow last minute of the jensen fight was nuts great ko
It was an entertaining fight, but I really didn’t like the look of that second knee Villasenor landed when Jensen was trying to get up after they went to the ground. At the very least, it was an attempt at an illegal knee to the head. One of those “Oh, no, of course I wasn’t aiming at his head, I was aiming at his shoulder!” deals… No action from the ref, not a word from the commentators, naturally.
Still, it was a highlight reel KO. “Here, let me do my Nate Quarry impression…”

CUng Le took his arm out , and those head kicks were pretty hard … Frank was bleeding from both ears it looked like hah … He had nothing left in that arm and the kick at the buzzer put him on queer street , he wanted too lay down in the corner even before the stoppage … What a beat down , even tho Frank had him rocked a little bit that next kick from Le took what little bit Frank had left out of him ..
Good Fight , I loved it when all his smiles and smartass gestures stopped when he started getting frustrated with Le , classic .. He didnt have a answer too his adomen kicks and couldnt get in close at all ..

Well, think about it. If you try to force too much power to your punch or kicks, your speed will be a lot slower. With an opponent like Frank, you’re get your arms and leg twisted and broken if you’re slow. I think that’s why Cung tries to punch quick and bring his arms back. One is for defense, two, he doesn’t want to have his arm hanging out there with frank on the opposite side.

Stupid, stupid thing to say. “Pussies out”? None of us know the severity of the break. Also, Frank was obviously depending a lot on strikes here, and losing your dominant arm can, um, sorta hurt you in that department.

Rounds 1 and 2 definitely went to Cung, round three was probably Cungs as well. Frank was constantly on defense. Round three a little better for Frank in that he rocked Cung but Cung recovered and landed 2 more devastating kings to Franks head at the bell.
Frank collapsed on the way to the stool and had to be helped up. He was mentally rocked from repeated kicks and his arm was obviously swollen from trying to block what had to be at least 20 kicks.
Franks made a huge error in that he tried to stand with Cung the entire fight and Cung made him look like a rookie on his feet. Franks pride lost him this fight IMO.
No slam on Frank…I’m a fan but toe to toe Frank was badly outclassed by Cung. The best word I could use to describe Cung after seeing this fight is “PRECISE”.

Ben & Rob, obviously you guys are die hard fans of Frank Shamrock and I’m sorry to reign on your parade but he fought a stupid fight. This is mixed martial arts, not ultimate kick boxing. He chose to stand with a superior striker and refused to take Cung Le down because in his pre-fight interviews, he said that Cung would be the one to wimp out and try to take the fight to the ground.
Face it. Frank’s ego got the best of him. His ground skills are superior to Cung’s yet he chose to stand and bang and suffered the consequences.
The best pound for pound fighters are well rounded in all areas. Frank will never be one until he puts his ego aside and decides to exploit his opponent’s weaknesses.
I don’t know the extent of the damages to his arm but I can tell you this: Randy sustained a broken arm when kicked by Gonzaga. Frank Mir broke Tim Sylvia’s arm and Tim was still ready, willing, and able to continue. Herb Dean had to stop that fight! On the other hand, Frank Shamrock breaks his arm and suddenly can’t continue.
The guy doesn’t belong in the UFC FOR A REASON. His ego was hurt because he was in a losing battle. Instead of risking a KO loss to Cung Le, he pussed out by claiming that his arm hurt.
I know it hurts your feelings but sometimes the truth is hard to swallow.
by Jake on Mar 30, 2008 12:09 AM EDT reply actions
It sounds to me that Shamrock was trying to keep the fight going by not taking Le down and paid the price by letting himself get kicked too much. Every time Ranallo commentates he exaggerates the significance of the round, fight and the event on the whole.

From what I read it sounds like Frank cann’t block a kick to the face to save his life or jaw.

I’m far from a huge Shamrock fan, and was thrilled to see Cung get the win (despite my original prediction being that Cung would be destroyed in short order).
The point is, your basing your ideas on conjecture. The facts are that, in the replay, you can clearly see Frank’s arm “give” where Cung’s kick landed. It didn’t look pretty. And he immediately reacted by shaking his arm out, which should put to rest any theories that he made the injury up to duck out (not that you’re implying it was).
Tim Sylvia is a mongoloid who probably feels no pain, so he shouldn’t even be mentioned here. As for Couture, well, I said it earlier — none of us can speculate on the severity of the break. The only thing that’s clear is that Frank took repeated kicks to his right arm, which was visibly welted and swollen.
Actually, I don’t even know how any of what I said can be construed as sympathetic to Shamrock. He lost the fight, for whatever reason (I’m still not sure whether it was due to his ego in not going for takedowns or simply because he was outclassed), and that’s that.

Great fight. MMA fans gotta give Le all the credit. His style completely baffled Frank in this fight. Many people are saying that Frank should have taken him to the ground, but I think Le’s takedown defense is way underestimated. He has great balance, a low center of gravity and lots of strength. He is already one of the top ten or fifteen 185lb fighters in MMA already after only 6 fights. I have seen him fight 15-20 times now, and in virtually every fight his opponets lose their will to compete at some point in the fight. Tonight was no different, Shamrock was mentally defeated by Le’s non-stop attacks and confusing style. Heres to watching the next MMA superstar; I for one will not be missing any Cung Le fights in the future. WAR LE!

Well said.
You guys are right. After re-watching the fight, Frank did look like he had a serious injury. I jumped the gun considering how he quit on the Renzo fight when he was losing.

A superstar with no ground game? It’s kinda funny. After almost every card people have kneejerk reactions to the quality of the card etc.

He screamed when Mir had him in a heel hook.

Point of note, even when Couture’s arm broke, he was clearly winning the fight. Couture took the tough road and gutted out the pain and finished his match.
Frank, this fight was a see saw battle and Frank was clearly not in the same dominant position Couture was in. If anything, Frank can be blamed for not being better prepared and his poor choice in standing with a superior striker. Cung Le is not like Baroni as he has better striking technique, endurance, and ring tactics than Baroni.
In any case, its entertaining to see frank lose again. Lets see what his excuse will be this time.

I actually agree with everything you say about his ego and I’m very happy for Cung Le, I mean you can see that from my previous posts. I am a fan of Frank, for what he has done for the sport and for how he wants to see the fighters paid accordingly. Yeah his ego is huge, overinflated even, but he’s a pioneer in the sport.
No question he fought a silly fight by not playing to his strengths and he deserved to lose. However you can’t call him a pussy if his arm happens to be shattered. That’s my only disagreeance, I don’t mean to argue purely for the sake of it.
If FJS doesn’t have a broken arm, well then fair enough, a pussy he is. I just respect those guys for what they do, no one has the right to fighter bash unless they are one. You can’t begin to understand what the game is actually all about unless you do it for real.

I think it’s a bit of both. He lost because of his HUGE ego and he was outclassed. When do you suppose fighters will realize that a win, is a win, is a win? As long as the fight is exciting, I don’t care if the fight ends via decision, submission, KO, or TKO.
Frank could’ve won that fight but instead he was content with blocking Cung Le’s kicks which cost him the fight.

Gilbert Melendez was actually kinda boring for me. content to sit in guard and hammerfist. effective, hes a bad ass and all…but at least sean sherk attempts to improve his position and shows some bjj top control. that was a mini-Kerr.

Well you know Gary Shaw is or was a boxing promoter and we all know what happens in boxing. Both fighters have big followings and a rematch would give them another good card.

It is not a knee jerk reaction. Cung Le has been a professional fighter for over 15 years, (San Shou has MMA elements, and he was the best in the world there) has an MMA record now of 6-0 w/all 6 wins by KO/TKO. He just beat one of the top 10 or 15 guys in a weight division one over where he should be fighting. Absolutely not knee jerk reaction.
