UFC 83 card set for Serra vs. St. Pierre 2 fights in Montreal

UFC 83 fight card

Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) today confirmed what we have known for some time now:

The 11 fights booked for the UFC 83: "Serra vs. St. Pierre 2" pay-per-view (PPV) event from the Bell Centre in Montreal, Canada, on Saturday, April 19, are now all official -- we can remove the "rumor" tag from those that were up until recently unconfirmed.

Here's the complete line up:

Main Event:

UFC Welterweight Champion Matt Serra vs. Interim UFC Welterweight Champion Georges St. Pierre

Main card (televised):

185 lbs.: Rich Franklin (22-3) vs. Travis Lutter (9-4)
185 lbs.: Kalib Starnes (8-2-1) vs. Nate Quarry (9-2)
185 lbs.: Michael Bisping (15-1) vs. Charles McCarthy (10-4)
155 lbs.: Mac Danzig (17-4-1) vs. Mark Bocek (5-1)

Under card (may not be broadcast):

185 lbs.: Jason MacDonald (19-9) vs. Joe Doerksen (39-11)
185 lbs.: Alan Belcher (12-4) vs. Jason Day (15-5)
185 lbs.: Ed Herman (14-5) vs. Demian Maia (6-0)
155 lbs.: Sam Stout (13-3-1) vs. Rich Clementi (30-12-1)
265 lbs.: Cain Velasquez (2-0) vs. Brad Morris (10-2)
170 lbs.: Jonathan Goulet (21-9) vs. Kuniyoshi Hironaka (11-4)

This marks the first UFC foray into Canada, which has unsurprisingly created quite a buzz north of the United States border. In fact, tickets to the event were essentially sold out to the 20,000-seat arena during the exclusive presale.

That has a lot to do with the participation of local favorite and one of the top mixed martial artists on the planet, Georges St. Pierre. "Rush" will look to reclaim his 170-pound strap when he rematches reigning welterweight champion, Matt Serra, in the marquee match of the evening.

Important middleweight bouts round out the entire main card for the most part, including an intriguing showdown between former 185-pound titleholder, Rich Franklin, and Brazilian jiu-jitsu stylist, Travis Lutter. That's going to be a great fight and an interesting contrast in styles -- Rich prefers to bang, while Travis prefers to roll.

Season three winner of The Ultimate Fighter (TUF), Michael Bisping, will also make his highly anticipated middleweight debut when he takes on "Captain Miserable" himself, Charles McCarthy.

From the opening to closing bell, the atmosphere inside the Bell Centre is going to be absolutely electric for UFC 83. Let's hope the fights live up to the lofty expectations ... if that's even possible.

Kind of unfortunate that Starnes and Tupperware both found their way onto the main card. BTW, screw whoever was planning on writing 1st.

the televised fights should be pretty good, you have the Mac fight which I want to see, to get to watch his talent, then bisping fight is BS, Quarry and Starnes should be a nice scrapp, Lutter and Franklin will be a good style vs style matchup and then the mother of all MOG cant wait for GSP!!!!

OMG not MOG

2nd

I have said it a million times, that the quality of this card could have been better by matching up Bisping vs. belcher, put that on the main card and match up there opponents Day vs. Tuppaware on the undercard!

Also Danzig should be fighting someone a lot better than Bocek.
Danzig is a true mma veteran with over 20 wins, No need to baby him, he can handle better quailty opponents than Bocek!

With all the hype around the Canadian card when it was first announced, I seriously thought that the card would have ended up looking better than this.

Mania, do you know If Sylvia still has that announcement planned for noon today? if so, please cover it. he better have something better to say than promoting his new hunting DVD.

I’m pretty sure he’ll confirm all of the rumors tonight on InsideMMA.

I agree.

I thought that the UFC would send a couple more top name fighters here.
And I was really hoping they would of sent some ex-PrideFC fighters..

Oh well I guess Bisping .vs. Tupperware makes up for the weak card.lol.

I cant wait for GSP/Serra..I am also looking forward to Franklin .vs. Lutter.
I know Rich will never be champ again, but he is still a Top fighter and is worthy of fighting on main cards(not main event). He is still a big threat to the weak MW division, and always puts on a good show(win or lose)…

Would like to see Bisping on the undercard and watch Stout v Clementi fight.

 Totally agree
I’d love to see the Stout fight

And I also agree that Bisping and Belcher woulda been a much better televised bout

This card is really lacking Heavyweight and light-heavyweight bouts too

With all the hype around the Canadian card when it was first announced, I seriously thought that the card would have ended up looking better than this.

I think it had to do with the event selling out as quick as it did. They are making max gate $ on the fight card so why not add the fighters to the fight night card which is pretty much what they did.

Also, I don’t know why they keep putting Kaleb on T.V. He’s never looked good and always gasses like a 350lb man running a marathon.

I still don’t get why Mccarthy is in there what would it prove for Bisping to win this fight?
and I feel the Stout-Clementi fight should be on the main card.
but…
St Pierre 1st rd KO

I’m really surprised that nobody seems to care about the herman v Maia fight, I’m thinking it’ll be one of the better fights of the night.

I hate watching Kaleb fight. If he loses, and i thibk he will, I never want to see him televised again.

Weak ass card. I’ll probably stop by a bar to catch the first round of St.-Pierre DESTROYING Serra and then peace out after seeing GSP with his hand raised and the belt around his waist.

Definitely going to be one of the weakest PPV this year.

Well this being the 1st UFC event in Canada I guess they decided to stack it with Canadian fighters. Some of these fighters may be worth watching like GSP and Stout. Others are kinda just filler or on the fringe of things.

Also Danzig should be fighting someone a lot better than Bocek.
Danzig is a true mma veteran with over 20 wins, No need to baby him, he can handle better quailty opponents than Bocek!

Well we shall have to see how this one goes. If Danzig tries to take this fight to the ground he may be in for a surprise. Bocek is supposed to be a ground wizard cant say I have seen it though. I think this fight will be closer then you think and wouldnt be shocked if Bocek won.

For all the P4P talk going on lately, here’s a thought I know hasn’t gone thru anyone’s mind (except my sick twisted head):

Matt Serra is overwhelmingly being picked to get destroyed in this fight. The first fight is largely being written off. But let’s say he beats GSP again. Will he get any credit yet? What if then, in looking to avenge defeat, he calls out BJ Penn for after his fight with Sherk and says he also wants to fight in two divisions like so many others. He already went to a close decision with him so he has shown he can hang. He goes down & gets the lightweight title. For everyone else being talked about as P4P, if he were to become only the third person to hold titles in two weight classes and the first to hold them consecutively, he would become legendary!! What if?!

That said, GSP in 4. Serra’s tougher than most give him credit for but at the end of the day I gotta come back to reality. But…??

by PJJ on Mar 28, 2008 1:44 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

BTW, I am not trolling here. I just had said to myself one day, “Geez, he already beat GSP once convincingly. What does this guy have to do to get any respect?” And then came up with that theory of what it will take.

i cant wait to see gsp smash serra then 6 months or so from now matt hughes will beat down serra then serra can go bak to where he belongs on undercards of ppvs…and why are sum of u people hateing on this ppv its not great but its pretty damm solid,,if u dont like it the dont watch it but quit crying about it

If you feel that way, maybe you should think about laying some money down on Bocek. He is a 600 point underdog, which is about has 1 sided of a fight as it gets. I know all about Bocek’s ground game, but Mac’s ground game is phenominal as well. In MMA Bocek hasn’t faced the level of competition that Danzig has faced. Mac is a seasoned veteran who has been in wars, paid his dues, and is ready to fight top guys. He is one of the TUF winners that dont need there careers babied (Cough Bisping *Cough**

The last thing the UFC wants to see is its TUF winner loose there 1st UFC fight, but my point is that they dont have to worry as much about that with Mac, he is ready NOW. He has fought in the Big shows before and I really believe he is ready to make an impact at lightweight.

Nate Diaz, gray Maynard, Joe Lauzon who came from the TUF season before Mac’s all are being thrown to the wolves and getting very tough and quality opponents like: Pellegrino, Edgar, and Florian….All I am trying to say is that the UFC doesnt need to waste time building Mac up…He is ready and he is on the same level as Diaz,Maynard, and Lauzon….I hope that after the Bocek fight, he starts getting some better match ups.

For starters after he beats Bocek, I would like to see him fight and defeat Manny Gamburyan, after that give him Din Thomas and if he can get passed those 2 guys, then he will only be a fight or 2 away from a #1 contender match

I am not a big fan of Danzig, but I think very highly of him as a fighter.

Crying about something and stating the obvious are two different things. Seriously, you can’t say this is going to be a great PPV. Its decent, and fans (including myself) are still going to watch, but UFC matchmakers could have done better.

Would have rather seen Bisping fight someone who is going to bring the fight to him. I don’t see why they don’t put him in the ring against David Loiseau…it being in Montreal and all. Would definitely be a little more of an entertaining fight. Given the fact that Loiseau handed McCarty an butt whooping a while ago.

Should still be an entertaining card…but like so many of you I would have rather seen some of the non-televised fights as opposed to the televised ones.

What is evetryone’s obsession with Loiseau? He is done! He was a good fighter a few years back, but never recovered mentally from the Rich Franklin fight. Forget about the Crow, he is DONE!

Looks like Georges’ pubes went wild. That shit is almost up to his chest!

Once again, I’d rather see the undercard fights than the main card fights (with the exception of the main event). I really hope Demaia destroys Herman so we can see the fight after the the main card snoozers. Sam Stout vs. Rich Clementi is going to be sick as well. Hope they end up on the broadcast.

LOL! I don’t think those are his pubes, bro, but if they are, they’ve already spread onto Matt Serra’s left arm!
