MMA Quick Quote: Doug Rhino Marshall on Brian Stann fight

"Brian's got a lot of publicity and media following and stuff and I'm looking to take that away from him and put the spotlight back on me, back where the spotlight should be, on the champion. Everybody thinks he's the one that's going to beat the Rhino, I'm not thinking so. I just don't think it's his time. I think he's had enough spotlight and I'm looking forward to taking that spotlight away.... I don't think in the fights that Brian has had, he has had to persevere through any kind of serious damage or even an onslaught like I'm planning to put on him. I think that will definitely tell me right away where he's at.... I'm not looking at giving up my big gold belt, my strap, anytime soon."
-- WEC Light Heavyweight Champion Doug "Rhino" Marshall talks with MMAWeekly.com about his upcoming title defense against Brian Stann this Wednesday (March 26) at "The Joint" at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada. The show will air LIVE on the Versus network at 9 p.m. ET. For the rest of the fight card click here.

Anderson Silva and Roy Jones, are involved in preliminary negotiations for a boxing match that wont be an exhibition match.
Both Roy and Anderson really want this fight!
This was reported by NBCsports but there is a complete article on it on mmajunkie

Pretty old picture of The Rhino there. Its strange because he actually looks younger now than he used to look…
Going into this fight, all the talk is about Brian Stann. I actually think that this is The Rhino’s fight to lose. I wish that BetUs offered odds on WEC events. Does anyone know what the Vegas odds are for this fight?

I also have to go with the Rhino on this one. He’s already shown that he’s well rounded enough to pull submissions and not just go out and brawl. Stann while exciting to watch, seems a little one dimensional. We’ll see who’s the real deal with this one because I believe somebody’s holes are gonna get exposed.

Say what you want about Rhino, but he usually produces entertaining fights. He’d be mediocre at best if he fought in the UFC, but I’ll be pulling for him since he’s from my old stomping grounds in Visalia, CA.

Veteran Boxing Writer —"Anderson Silva Would Outbox Roy Jones."
For the past 23 years, Pedro Fernandez has hosted a Boxing radio show and is also the owner/editor/head-writer for ringtalk.com . Pedro also covers MMA.
Pedro Fernandez is a 4 time Golden Gloves champion.
“For Roy (Jones) to take this fight in my mind would be virtual suicide. (Anderson) Silva is bigger, stronger, knows how to put leverage on his punches, and would be willing to fight Roy at or around 180 lbs. Were he to connect on Jones’ fragile chin, it would be “lights out” for Mr. Jones. As the above subtitle says, “Betcha’ Roy won’t answer the phone!”

“UFC Ratings Beat Every Sport But NFL…Boxing May Never Recover!
Here is another factually based article on the impact of the Ultimate Fighting Championships that will rankle some boxing fans simply because they can’t believe their sport is circling the drain, while the UFC is breaking records time and again…. But who could have envisioned that in 2007, boxing would be fighting for its life?”

I doubt it will happen but if it did Silva wouldn’t make it out of more than a few rounds.

No its a lot closer to happening than you think. I posted some facts regarding the discussion, but mania is still moderating them, which most likely means that there will be a thread made about it, on this site, at some point today
Stay tuned

I read the story too.
Hope the UFC allow Silva to do it. Don’t think its a problem from Jones’ end.
Difficult fight to call

I’m not a fan of Rhino, but i’m pulling for him because all we here from stann is the typical jarhead “I R Marine, I R awesummmm!!!!” BS. yeah you are marine, hoorah, we get it. now shut the F up and fight.

I think it will be Stann standing but i’ve been wrong a bunch lately. How do you all think Rhino would do in the UFC. I can’t see him doing well. He kind of reminds me of the Chris Leben of the WEC, except he’s the champ. And I hate that KD shit he says.

Thanks for the link.
Pedro must be a big MMA fan lol.
I still think it is a hard fight to call.
Silva is such a prolific fighter with excellent striking. However, I feel his striking is so good because he either follows up or sets up punches with kicks.
Roy Jones, I used to be and still am a great fan of his. I used to love his fighting because of his style. Some successful british fighters have copied his style a la ‘Prince Naseem’. Pedro refers to his glass chin but his record says it all. He is good at avoiding punches which was due to his style.
Under boxing rules, I think Silva could struggle with just punching whereas this is Jones’ forte. Then there is the weight factor…..Silva being the bigger man has got to carry more weight behind the punch.
As I said, I’m on the fence, really don’t know which way it is going.
If I was a betting man, I would have to say Jones (only under boxing rules)
Whats your thoughts John??

This fight could be potentially disasterous for MMA. Anderson Silva is regarded by most as the top p4p guy in MMA. If he were to lose to a past his prime RJ Jr. it would invalidate MMA in a lot of people’s eyes. It’s not worth the risk unless someone from MMA is fighting the best that boxing has to offer. Anyone outside of Floyd Mayweather, Jr. wouldn’t be beneficial to MMA.

I’d probably change my mind who might win.
Silva could hold Jones in a clinch, without kneeing, and frustrate Jones and protect himself if the heat is getting too much.
He might just get away with that under boxing rules.
If Silva were to lose, a rubber match could ensue under MMA rules and restore what damage was done to the MMA world lol.
Thats a grey area Andy…..I’ve never eally thought about the repercussions.
Whats everyone elses thoughts on the repercussions…..win or lose????

Pedro has great ‘Boxing’ credentials but MMA fighter vs Boxer under boxing rules is ‘Virgin’ ground.
As a avid MMA follower, you must have varying opinion

I think it is definatly a lose lose situation. Who cares anyways. I don’t want to watch boxing even if it is Anderson boxing. Not to mention how long it would hold up his next title defense. I would much rather watch him kill Okami than this bs.
I know how the fight would go anyways. They start off throwing some jabs and dancing around. After RJJ connects with one Anderson throws a kick out of instinct and it lands right on the button. RJJ is out cold. Anderson is disqualified so RJJ wins. RJJ wins the boxing match but we all know MMA is better. LOL!

If I hear this over-rated piece of Rhino dung say that stupid “K-D” shit anymore, I think my head will implode.
Doug Marshall wouldn’t even qualify as a gatekeeper in the UFC. He couldn’t hold Thiago Silva’s jockstrap, let alone any of the Top 3 fighters in the division.
K-D….Knocked Dead?
Give me a break. He’s like a walking “West Coast Chopper” T-Shirt, only he’s a bigger douche bag then the guys who usually wear that shit.
I hope Marshall is KD’d…literally.

Realistically, I have no idea who would win, but its a double edged sword. On one end I would like to see Silva beat a boxing Legend at his own game to shut all the mma hating boxers up. On the other hand, Jones could beat Silva, damaging his credentials.
Now that I think about it, and read other peoples intelligent posts. I think its better to stay away from this fight. win/loose, I would still rather see Silva destroying dudes in mma with his tai clinch, and him accepting a boxing match, would take him out of play in the UFC for at least 7 months.
Its probably a bad idea. He is regarded as the best P4P fighter right now, no need to differentiate from the NORM!

which makes him that much more of a jack@ss. in his first WEC fight, his opponent said something and Stann’s response “rarrr you aren’t a marine, you don’t have the right to say that! now i’m gonna kick your ass for saying that.”
yeah buddy.. uhh you were a marine to preserve his right to say what he did.. but then again they still like to claim they aren’t part of the navy.
