CBS & EliteXC's 'Saturday Night Fights' to begin May 31

Saturday Night Fights CBS EliteXC

Props: ProElite.com

Quoteworthy:

"Keep an eye out for the first airing of advertisements for CBS & EliteXC's "Saturday Night Fights" during the opening round of the NCAA Tournament. The rumored event date is May 31st!"

Not the big announcement EliteXC Live Events President Gary Shaw promised yesterday but VERY interesting nonetheless. Hopefully, there is more to follow real soon.

That’s the big announcement? Tomorrow Shaw will announce something even bigger: he eats a lot.

it will be interesting to see how well it does, since its going to be on saturdays, the night that their target audience doesn’t usually stay home to watch tv.

All the UFC PPVs are on Saturday nights too. Since they presumably will try to make it a rare and special event instead of like a regular Saturday night prime time TV show they should only lose viewers because their product sucks instead of because their target demo is out drinking and/or fornicating.

And the most common day for UFC events . . . To me, the more the the better ya know. But to Dana, probably plans on putting the most packed cards of the year on the same saturdays as EliteXC’s events, just give em no ratings whatsoever ya know. If Danas smart thats what he’ll do.

Except that national prime time coverage on broadcast television is far better for the sport than White’s attempts to monopolize it. SpikeTV hits a lot of cable HHs, but CBS reaches every TV in America. If he cares about MMA at all, he should let CBS attract more people to the sport. It’s not like EliteXC is going to hurt UFC’s credibility.

EliteXC… elite… um, can u even call kimbo slice elite? yeah i didn’t think so.

and ur right adam. dana would do something like that. he would probably move a Fight Night card from the usual wed. to sat. just to steal ratings from shaw, i’m sure if a UFC event was free it would do better than a free elite event. dana is tricky like that!

Anybody else really expecting the fat son of a… Gary Shaw was going to announce a Ricco Rodriquez vs. Andrei fight?

Im sad by this announcement.. I mean its good, but I thought of something bigger.. thats all.

by "Mr. NC-17" on Mar 19, 2008 5:58 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

i’m most interested in the fight card under kimbo vs tba. shields.noons, diaz and bigfoot should all be on it, but probably wont. my odds on favorite to fight kimbo are butterbean or tyson. i think both would do it for the money and butterbean would have the best chance to win between the two. i would be shocked if they paired kimbo w/ silva or any other true mmaer. whoever it is i hope they dont take a dive like bo cantrell.

Aren’t you guys used to this by now? Guys like Dana, Shaw, Don King, Vince McMahon are all masters at suckering people in. That’s why they’re called promoters, and that’s why they’re all rich as hell.

Um Ok…

This is the huge earth shattering announcement? That there are going to be Elite XC commercials during the NCAA tourney???

i’m just staying. statistically saturday nights are the worst for ratings in general as people don’t watch tv then. regardless EliteXC is going to have an uphill battle.

honestly based on their shows so far, there is a reason people will stay home to watch a UFC PPV and not stay home to watch a free EliteXC event.

granted i’ll probably watch it because its MMA.

most people commenting here don’t seem to be interested in MMA as a sport. Comments like EliteXC is crack. Kimbo is not proven.
This is all meaningless why people are wasting their telling others that kimbo and elitexc are useless.
Obviously kimbo is on his way to being a superstar in MMA. Only haters want him to fight a tough opponent so they are always laugh their lungs. Forgetting than EVERY top mma superstar has lost some fights(couture, anderson silva, nogriega, gracie).

What can i say: i’m happy the UFC IS finally getting competition. It is good for MMA not be Dana White private possession like Vince owns Wrestling.

As for Kimbo fighting easy opponents. It’s fairly OK. He needs to build his experience slowly. No need to take a top 10 heavyweight at this stage. Look at what happed to Lesnar. It was a dumb move from Dana to place him on hard fight when he was so new. Vince from WWE would not have made such a mistake. Of course i know WWE is not real fighting, but the same principles of building fighters and matches applies to MMA. The result of all this: Lesnar lost the match, diminishing his invincible status. Now Dana learned from his mistake and is giving Lesnar an easy opponent just like EliteXC is doing with Kimbo.

Let’s not have theoretical, unintelligent discussions like my mom would beat up Kimbo. Or Lesnar will defeat Fedor – when 2 fighters are to 99.999% never to meet.

In the both will be superstars. So that will good for MMA.

How exciting. I think gary shaw should take his promotion of ufc wannabes and street fighters and shove it up his butt. This guy is a bum who does not care about the sport of mma he only cares about the money and right now all he is doing is losing money. He says his goal is to get a $1,000,000 gate which is nothing compared to the ufc and if he put on a ppv event he would be lucky to get 50,000 buys which is nowhere near the ufc. Shaw is a bum and is not in it for the love of the sport or the fighters he is in it for himself and himself only.

It’s just a TUF event. The last one was amazing, and it wasn’t a #1 contender fight or anything.

2 guys who lost to J.Fitch dont deserve main event status even on a fight night on spiketv.the real main event will be the guys fighting for a contract.if it was a rematch with koscheck then yeah that would have been worthy of main event.i hope that Diegio and Kos have a rematch down the road.

as for luigi hes been in a couple of decent fights but i dont see him being able to win this fight. the NIGHTMARE will win by GnP.

ShamrockFan i believe u just contradicted urself…
correct me if im wrong but like u stated earlier all top mma fighters have lost, ie Anderson Silva, WHO is lookin pretty damn INVINCIBLE right now wouldn’t u say??

im tired of hearin bout how Lesnar fightin Mir was a BAD choice… i give Lesner tons of respect just for steppin in and fightin a former champ. win or loose Lesner only gained respect in that fight..

by Canadian Fighter on Mar 19, 2008 10:10 PM EDT reply actions   0 recs

and if Lesnar would have won the write ups about “Frank Mir is washed up, Its because of the motorcycle accident, Lesnar is the future of the HW Division!” would have been pouring in… respect the guys who actually get in the cage

Diego only lost by split decision due to lay ‘n pray. He’s going to tear Luigi to pieces.

Good for EliteXC. Hopefully the show’s production value is up to par, and they bring some quality fights and don’t just rely on the hype of Kimbo Slice.

Can’t wait to see the card.

Kimbo would get tore apart by a real BJJ artist. Stop putting him in there with cans and put him against a real threat!!! He just reminds me of another Bob Sapp, but from the “streets”.

Regardless of there status in the welterweight division, this will be an exciting fight, and I dont have a problem with it headlining a free event. I actually like the fact that this fight makes sense. Diego lost 2 in a row, then he had to fight Beilkheden, and now he has to fight Luigi, andf then he can work his way back up the division. This is how it should be as a fighter, you loose, you start all over, starting from the bottom of the division!

This is being made into a bigger deal than it actually is. Anyone who is a fan of MMA has cable television and has been able to watch fights on Spike TV for several years. CBS putting these shows on Saturday night is great for the sport but they will not see the numbers they may expect to.

ONLY the UFC brings the numbers.

WHAT?!!!!?!!! Luigi Fioravanti in a Main Event?? Get the hell out of here! That dude does not deserve to be in a main event of a TUF finale or UFN or even televised on a PPV. That matchup is a disgrace. Luigi is not a well rounded fighter and is known for his standup. Diego is just going to take him down to the ground and pound him out. Luigi looked good against a waaaaay past his prime Dave Menne and then Luigi lost to Fitch, lost to Forrest PETZ and is now coming off of a decision win against Luke Cummo on the undercard of the last PPV. Is that what it takes to headline a TUF Finale? Last season’s headliner was Roger Huerta vs Clay Guida. Now THAT was a fight.

U may be right. This fight may not be main event worthy. At first I liked it because they are 2 scrappy guys, but thinking about the way their styles will match up, Diego is basically being fed a tailor made opponent for his style. In Diego last couple of fights, as soon as the fight starts he shoots for the takedown, if he doe this to luigi, the fight will be over quick, because Diego may have the best ground game in the division.

The fights were awesome and alot better than I thought they would be. I’m a huge UFC fan and if Kimbo wouldn’t had that fight in the UFC it wouldn’t been fixed. Thompson, did get hit alot but he was still fighting when the ref stopped the fight. The fight should of been stopped when Thompson had Kimbo down for almost 2:00 in the 2nd round and Kimbo did knothing. Their should be a rematch!!!!!!!!!!!!That is bull@#$%!!!!
